Congratulations to the kindergarten English and French Immersion students who had their kindergarten graduation on Tuesday evening!

Our school musical was a huge success. Thank you to everyone for all of their hard work and dedication. We would like to thank Roger’s Cable for use of their lighting, Andrea Barrett for costumes, CBRH for risers, All Hallows for chairs, Bailey Jordan-Neil for performing, Mr. Graham for directing the musical, our staff, and all of our families for making the show a success.

On Monday our classes celebrated World Ocean’s Day with lots of activities and art work about the importance of the oceans in our world.

Happy birthday from the prayer group to Mrs. Coleman who celebrated her birthday on Monday.

First Reconciliation was held at All Hallows on Monday night with Father Terry. Celebrating their first reconciliation was grade three students Jenna Cammie, Keira Clarke, Cole Boyd-Martyn, Kira McCarthy, and Natalie Parsons. Thank you to Mrs. George who organized the event and to Ms. Horner, Mrs. English, and Mrs. Dicks who facilitated some of the stations with the students.

Congratulations to the kindergarten English and French Immersion students who had their kindergarten graduation on Tuesday evening. Thank you to Mrs. Hodder, Mme. Brett and Mr. Graham for a beautiful night of song and celebration.


 
Last night there was a meeting for parents of students who are interested in the Germany-Paris trip planned for next year during Easter. The trip is open to students in grades five and up for the 2015-2016 school year.
 
 
 
Also on Thursday evening, Mrs. Coleman hosted a pre-First Holy Communion celebration in Chapel.

Today our school is hosting Jump Rope for Heart and Stroke activities today.
Our school community would like to congratulate Deacon Mr. Andrew White who was ordained as a Deacon during a mass at Most Holy Redeemer on Sunday.

STARS OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to our students who participated in the Arthur James Sun Run last Saturday. Kaitlyn Coade, James Coade, Teresa Coleman, Luke Coleman, and Hala Parsons ran the kids 1 km event. Clare Coleman, Max Chrappa, Caleb Rashleigh, Ella Rashleigh, and Natalie Parsons ran the kids 2.5 km run.

Congratulations to Ben Griffin, Clare Coleman, Luke Coleman, and Lily Smallwood who participated in the second Mudslide Mountain Bike Series race for the junior course. Teresa Coleman also participated in the Squirt Division.

Congratulations to our students who have been taking part in their yearend music recitals. Grace Brake-Higgins, Reegan Curtis, Ava Hodder, Molly George, and Isabelle Mercier had their final piano recital for the year. Alister MacDonnell had his final recital for the year playing the drums.
CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are really enjoying talking about their dads and doing some Father’s Day activities. They also enjoyed doing activities for World Oceans Day on Monday.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has been busy learning how to tell time. They had a great time at their kindergarten graduation on Tuesday evening. After the celebration they enjoyed a cake with all their names on it!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class really enjoyed their graduation celebration in the gym with their friends and family. This week they were learning about sinking, floating, transportation and graphing.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a very busy week finishing up all their projects. They are really excited to be going to Mrs. George’s house tonight for their yearend party!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class made crayon resist tropical fish for World Ocean’s Day. They are doing writing projects to highlight a classmate’s positive character traits. They are studying and sorting 2D and 3D figures.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class picked their lettuce from the greenhouse on Thursday. They were very excited to taste the lettuce they grew. The students are looking forward to their First Holy Communion on Sunday morning at Holy Redeemer. The student of the week is Emily.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has been analyzing different versions of Les Trois Petits Cochons, they are studying the points of view from the pigs perspective as well as the wolf's perspective. The students also wrote their own version of the story.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class has been working hard on a time lapse video of their marigolds growing. It was broadcasted over the whole school. The grade three students are working hard to publish their books.

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class had a lot of fun at the Erosion tour last Friday. It was very interesting and they learned a lot about erosion. They have been working very hard to finish their curriculum in grade three and four!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on making a yearend yearbook to share with their classmates. The book will include facts and information about them, their favourite memories from this year and their photo.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is busy preparing for final exams.

 
COMING UP...
On Sunday our students will celebrate their First Holy Communion at 10:30 am at Most Holy Redeemer Parish.

The grade 7 to level 1 students began their final exams on Tuesday.

Hajra Ahmad and Colin Spencer received medals at the Western Regional Heritage Fair for having projects in the top twenty. Hajra also received a scholarship from the Canadian Cancer Society for her project about Sir Wilfred Grenfell. 

Lily Smallwood, Rachael Griffin and Grace Brace-Higgins demonstrate their class science experiment at our school's annual science fair last week.

Craig Bishop, Noah Evans, Mariam Ahmad, Charlotte Mercier and Katherine Noel with Mr. Neil Deluney. Mr Deluney came to school to talk to the students about our resources. He brought in a live lobster for the students to see, as well as some cooked lobster to sample. Yum!
 
This week is Environment Week. Many of our classes are celebrating with recycled art projects, nature walks and schoolyard clean up projects.
   
Our school was very busy this week performing the school musical “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream coat”. The performance featured all of our students from junior kindergarten to Level 1. As well, we had a special guest performance by Bailey Jordan-Neil.  Thank you to Dr. Gary Graham for directing the show, Mrs. Marjorie Deckert for assisting with the costumes, Mr. Wilfred Pardy for assisting with the sound, Cameron Peddle for overseeing the sound equipment, and to all the teachers and students for helping with the props and backgrounds. It was an “Amazing” show. See pictures below.

STARS OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to Mme. Ryan’s class who won $100 in free books from Scholastic this week!!

Congratulations to our science fair medalists Amna Ahmad, Hajra Ahmad, Makenzy Bishop, Simon Boitsefski, Isaac Buckingham, Kira Clarke, Max Chrappa, Clare Coleman,  Emma Doman, Rebecca Janes, Maria Reynolds, Douglas MacKenzie, Lucas Neville, Madison Noel and Caleb Rashleigh.

Congratulations to our students who received regional awards for the National Geoscience and Engineering Month Bridge Building Competition. Madison Noel, Anna Mackenzie and Jayden Lempriere placed first for their bridge which held 155 kg; Maria Reynolds, Arista White, and Hajra Ahmad who placed second for their bridge which held 116.3 kg; and Douglas MacKenzie, Nathan Anderson and Cameron Peddle placed third for their bridge which held 71.1 kg.

Congratulations to our winners in the World Ocean’s Day Poster Contest. In kindergarten, Hala Parsons received an honourable mention, in grade one Rachael Griffin received an honourable mention, and in grade three Reyd Ward received an honourable mention.  All the student's posters will be displayed in the World's Oceans Day Poster Contest.
 
Congratulations to Amna Ahmad who received their place in the ACAP Humber Arm Art Contest for elementary and to Caleb Rashleigh who came in second place in primary. All the students’ art work will be displayed at City Hall.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes really enjoyed singing in the musical. They are working on some crafts to have for the upcoming art show.
Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a very busy week getting ready for the school musical and kindergarten graduation. They are practicing very hard! They are also learning how to tell time and will be exploring outdoors and digging in some soil to see what lives in it. They have also been cleaning up litter in celebration of Environment Week.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about community helpers in social studies. They are also learning to tell time in math. The students were very excited to wear their brightly coloured shirts and perform in the musical!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is finishing up their math and social studies for the year. They really enjoyed performing in the musical this week.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion have been working very hard on the musical. It was a fantastic show. They are learning what it means to have good character. They are well on their way!! The class has received their caterpillars and are hoping to have some butterflies to release before the school year ends. They are very excited about winning $100 in classroom books from scholastic!
Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about volunteers in social studies. They are busy learning about regrouping addition and subtraction in math.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is reading different versions of the Three Little Pigs. They will do a study and analysis of similarities and differences among these. They were also very busy with the musical this week. They hope everyone enjoyed the show.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is very excited to go on their Erosion tour this afternoon. To celebrate Environment Week they made recycled art this week from old book pages painted with water colour paints. The grade four students are building a castle out of milk cartons in language class as part of their sequencing strategy. They have to pay careful attention to the King’s commands in order to build it properly.
Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class prepared a slideshow for their penpals in St. Malo, Quebec. In their presentation they talked about Newfoundland traditional food, music, and places to visit. They hope to meet their penpals one day!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is reading “Kensuke’s Kingdom” and practicing their sequencing strategies. The book is an adventure story about an 11 year old boy who goes missing! The students enjoyed performing in the musical this week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have begun preparing for exams. The Junior High Girls’ basketball team had a great tournament last weekend in St. John’s. The team lost in the semi-finals by eight points.


COMING UP...
The First Reconciliation celebration is Monday, June 8th, at 6:30 pm.

Kindergarten graduation is Tuesday, June 9th, at 6:00 pm in our school gymnasium.

The First Holy Communion will be celebrated on Sunday, June 14 at 10:30 at Holy Redeemer.

Junior high to level 1 exams begin on June 12th.

Registration is still available for our full day junior kindergarten and our English and French Immersion kindergarten program for September 2015. As well, we are accepting new registrations for kindergarten to grade five French Immersion and Grade one to level two English. Please call the office for more information.

On Thursday We Held Our Annual Science Fair

Lucas Neville, places a used battery in the school's new recycling station. Lucas, along with this fellow classmates painted the station and prepared the labels in English and French. The labels explain why it is important that we recycle bread tags, used markers, old batteries and used ink cartridges. 
 
Clare Coleman (left), the overall winner in the IHMS Elementary Speak Off, with her teacher Mrs. Angel McCarthy. Clare spoke about facing her fears. 

 
We have many budding scientists in our school! On Thursday we held our annual Science Fair. The grade three to level 1 students all prepared individual projects, while the primary classes presented group projects. We would like to thank our judges Dr. Trina Butler, Dr. Dwayne Keough, Mr. Cec Lake, and Mr. Matthew Young. The grades three and six students finished their provincial language arts assessment with their demanding writing piece on Tuesday.

The junior high girls’ basketball team is travelling to St. John’s today for the last tournament of the season. We wish them luck.
Our new technology equipment that was delivered last week is prepared and being used in our classrooms. Students and teachers are enjoying using the new ELMO document cameras, ipads and imacs for projects and presentations.

STARS OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to James Lao and Luke Coleman who won ribbons in Beavers for Kub Kar Rally.

Congratulations to our students Sarah Buckingham, Jenna Cammie, Keira Clarke, Clare Coleman, Hala Parsons, Alyssa Power, Lily Smallwood, Colin Spencer and Nevaeh Vincent on their performance in the Dance Studio West annual year end show.

Congratulations to Ben Griffen and Ivor Cook who took part in the 2015 Mudslide Series on Sunday at Prince Edward Park. Ben Griffen placed fourth in the Dirt Squirt Expert category and Ivor Cook placed first in Mud Spuds category.


CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “p”. The children enjoyed the science fair this week. They really liked getting messy with their experiments.


Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a lot of fun learning about objects that sink and float. They also really enjoyed teaching everyone about their worm compost.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had lots of fun with their walking water and solar system experiments for the science fair. The students are learning about mass and object positions in math.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed the science fair. They did experiments on “walking water”, “magnet fun”, “density” and “flubber”. They are working on their last math unit: adding and subtracting to 20. The students are really looking forward to the musical next week!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was very busy this week preparing for the science fair. The students worked alongside the grade two French Immersion students. They have started their last math unit of the year.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about goods and services in social studies. They had lots of fun testing out experiments for the science fair. The star of the week is Molly.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has been busy learning about different kinds of poems and writing. In math, they are learning about measurement and is getting ready to start a unit in Geometry! Their green house lettuce is delicious. Next week, they are hoping to have enough red tomatoes to make salsa!

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class worked very hard on their science fair projects.  The science fair was very exciting. They are very happy that warmer weather is here so they can spend more time outside.

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class worked very hard this week on their science fair projects. They were able to explain their projects in both English and French! The students would like to thank their parents for helping them with their experiments at home!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are working on their last big art project for the year. In language arts the class is completing their last strategy unit on sequencing. The students are looking forward to many of the end of year school events. They have been practicing for the upcoming musical next week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had a presentation on Wednesday about Youth Ventures with Shawna Pelly, the Youth Ventures Coordinator. The students have been helping with the sound and backgrounds for the musical next week.

 


COMING UP...
The school musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat” will be performed at our school next Wednesday and Thursday at 7 pm. The cost for admission is $8.
