Lion's Roar - Friday, December 17, 2010

Last Friday we had our very first Dog Show and More Show. Thank you to Ms. Dutton and the grade 3 and 4 class. The show was a huge success. They raised over $400 for their SMARTboard. Thank you to Dr. Michael Tipple and Ms. Park for being judges and to all the students and families for supporting the show.

This past Saturday students participated in a fundraiser at Dominion. Students helped customers by putting their groceries in their cart. We raised $1,601.61 for our playground project. Thank you to Dominion for offering us this fundraiser and to the parents and students who participated.

This week Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten class did the third week of Advent celebration in chapel. They did a great job. Many of their parents came to watch.





Our Christmas concert on Tuesday was a great success. Thank you to all the students and teachers for all your hard work. Thank you to Mr. Graham and Mrs. McHugh for leading the choirs and bands, Claire Reynolds and Mrs. McCarthy for filming the entire concert, Mr. Danny Piercey for doing the sound and Mr. Kennedy and the staff for decorating the gym. Also, we would like to thank Santa for the early gift of a new sound system.

Also on Tuesday we had a Christmas Character Theme day. Our theme day was in aid of Multiple Sclerosis.

On Wednesday night our school choir sang for the annual Tree Lighting at Remembrance Square.

Stars of the Week

Students, staff and families have collected items for the food bank, stockings for seniors and the fire fighter’s toy drive. Thank you everyone!

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes are enjoying their Christmas party today. They are doing Christmas activities and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Their intern Sara Rozee finished her internship on Thursday.

The French Immersion Kindergarten class are learning more Christmas vocabulary. Joyeux Noel!

The English Kindergarten class is talking about sharing and making Christmas decorations.

The grade one class is making Christmas cards for their parents and making surprise crafts. Some students in their class are participating in the variety show on Monday.

The grade two class is learning how to add big numbers. They are also making Christmas crafts.

The grade three and four class are brainstorming about their next fundraiser for their SMARTboard. They are having their Christmas party today.

The grade five and six class is busy preparing for their class Christmas party. On Monday Bethany Whelan will be helping Constable Edwards with the Christmas Food Drive.

The junior high class is working very hard. They have mid-term exams coming up in January. They helped to edit the Christmas concert video this week.

Coming Up

Monday is IHMS T-Shirt day, variety show, and Christmas parties.

Tree trimming social: Rebecca Janes, the youngest Junior Kindergarten student, lights the tree with help from Mrs. Madonna English.

On Monday we celebrated the second week of Advent with the Kindergarten French Immersion class. We have now lit the second Advent candle on our wreath.

Santa Claus visited our school last week. His special helping elf took class photos and individual photos with students.

Students and staff had a great time at the Christmas parade this year! Afterwards we had our annual tree trimming and family social. Thank you to all the families, students and staff who helped with the float and the social. Rebecca Janes, the youngest junior kindergarten student, lit our Christmas tree.

On Wednesday we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at All Hallows with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group. Every student got a prayer rock to keep.

Tonight the grade 3 and 4 class is hosting a “Dog Show and More Show” at 6 pm. All pets are welcome! You can register your pet at the door for $5. There will be lots of prizes for different categories.

We are still collecting items for stockings for seniors, the firefighter’s toy drive and items for the food bank.

Our school has been chosen to pilot the Tennis for Schools Program. Thank you to Mrs. Dutton for applying for this program for our students.

We have raised over $3,000 for our IHMS Community Playground project. Thank you to our families who have donated.

Stars of the Week

Darcy Brake, Clare Coleman, Aaron Gillard, Sydnee Hynes, Clara Ryan, and Charlotte Sweetapple were interviewed by CBC Radio this week about Special Christmas Memories.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes are preparing for the Christmas concert and are making Christmas crafts.

The Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “w” and are getting ready for the concert.

The Kindergarten French Immersion class is preparing a song and a poem for the Christmas concert called “Ce Soin C’est Noel” and “Gentil Pere Noel”. They are sad to say good-bye to Madame Robertson the intern who has been working with their class this term. Everyone will miss her a lot.

The grade one class is preparing for the Christmas concert. Also they are learning to subtract and learning about needs and wants in social studies.

The grade two class is making wink streamers, number stories in math, and snowmen decorations. They are excited about Christmas Character Day.

The grade three and four class is excited about their Dog Show and More Show. They are learning about Canada in social studies,

The grade five and six class is preparing for their Christmas party and painting a Christmas scene in the cafeteria window.

The junior high class is decorating their classroom for Christmas. They are making a movie from a play in religion class. They are beginning a new unit in science.

Coming Up

Tomorrow we are having a fundraiser at Dominion. Students will be placing grocery bags in customer’s carts for donations to the IHMS Community Playground project from 10 to 4 pm.

On Tuesday we are having a Christmas Character theme day in aid of a parent who is traveling to Costa Rica for Multiple Sclerosis treatment. Also, Tuesday night is the Christmas concert beginning at 7 pm. Admission is $5.

School closes for Christmas break on December 20th at 12:15 pm.

Lion's Roar Friday December 3, 2010

Grade 3 and 4 class who was one of the classes to participate in the Jump Rope for the Heart and Stroke Foundation this week. This week the grade 1 class lit the first candle on our advent wreath. Last Sunday was the beginning of the season of Advent.

Last weekend our school had a drop and shop fundraiser in aid of the Shepherds Fund. We raised $361. There were many activities like cupcake decorating, arts and crafts, board games and gym activities. Thank you to our staff and families and to Mrs. Vincent who organized the day.

Thank you to everyone who donated used cell phones. Our used cell phone collection is now over.

We are now collecting for stockings for seniors, the firefighter’s toy drive and food items for the food bank.

On Monday our students participated in Jump Rope for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Everyone had fun. Thank you to Ms. Dutton and the junior high class.

The junior high class had a great time in St. John’s at the Skills Canada Intermediate Skills Challenge last weekend. On Tuesday we had a school assembly to celebrate their projects. We watched a wind turbine demonstration, a Lego Robotics demonstration, a video created by the TV video production team and a video of a job demonstration showing how to make cupcakes. Thank you to Mrs. Du Toit, Mrs. Keeping and Mrs. Reynolds for driving the students to St. John’s and to Mr. Hancock and Mrs. McCarthy for supervising.

Wednesday was school photo re-take day. Anyone who missed picture day was able to have their photo taken.

Students have been hard at work this week preparing our annual Christmas parade float. Thank you to Mlle. Robertson, Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Kennedy for organizing the float.

Our students have designed their own Christmas cards this year. The cards can be ordered for $1. All proceeds will go to the playground project.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to the junior high class on their projects for the Skills Canada Intermediate Skills Challenge. Everyone did a great job! Our Lego Robotics team won an award from the First Lego League for Innovation and Strategy and Carla du Toit won a bronze medal for her job skill demonstration decorating cupcakes.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes are doing Christmas activities and getting ready for the Christmas concert. They welcome back Ms. Sara Rozee to their class for another internship.

The French Immersion Kindergarten class are starting their Advent wreath and learning French words about Christmas.

The English Kindergarten class is learning the letter “M”.

The grade one class is learning how to protect their senses. They did the first Advent celebration and they are writing letters to Santa.

The grade two class made pizza on Wednesday and they baked cookies after they read the book “MMM Cookies.”

The grade three and four class is planning a Dog Show and More Show on December 10th at 6 pm. They are starting grade 4-9 intramurals for basketball this week.

The grade five and six class is getting ready for some tests. They are learning how to plan a special event in language arts. They are planning their Christmas party. They are excited to announce Abigail Companion and William Goodridge were nominated for the People to People Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. this summer.

The junior high class is tired from their trip to St. John’s. They are busy working on songs in band for the Christmas concert. The grade 7’s are writing research papers and visiting the Corner Brook Public Library today.

Coming Up

Saturday is our annual Tree Trimming Social from 12 pm to 2 pm. We will enjoy some treats, decorate our tree and sing Christmas carols.

The grade 3 and 4 class is organizing a Dog Show and More Show. This will take place in the IHMS gym on Friday, December 10th at 6 pm. Registration is $5.

There will be a Christmas character day on December 14th. The money raised will be donated to one of our parents who is travelling to Costa Rica on December 6th for treatment for Multiple Sclerosis.

The Christmas concert “Follow That Star” is on December 14th at 7 pm.

The mini-reporters are jumping rope for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
