Grade 5 girls' basketball team who won silver medals last weekend in the Western Provincial Tournament. Last Friday we had a pep rally for our grade 5 girls’ basketball team for the Western Provincials. The tournament was hosted by hour school. Thank you to Mr. Gillard who set up the sound system, and the Claire Reynolds and Jenna Yetman for emceeing. Also on Friday, the school choir sang at the opening of the Winter Carnival. This was led by Mr. Graham.
Also last week on Thursday we had our annual Winter Carnival fun day. Thank you to Mr. Gillard and the grade 7 to level 1 students for organizing the activities. We also worked on a snow sculpture of Mickey Mouse for the snow sculpture contest.
On Monday we had a holiday for Winter Carnival.
On Tuesday we had a pancake breakfast for Shrove Tuesday. Thank you to the teachers for making and serving the pancakes. They were yummy!
On Wednesday we went to a special mass for Ash Wednesday and in the afternoon we had our mid-year awards assembly for perfect attendance, perfect green team attendance and honours and distinction for grade 7 to level 1.
Some of our students took part in the Winter Carnival spelling bee on Thursday night at St. Gerard’s School. Congratulations to Front: Clara Ryan, Gina Spence, Alex Williams, Olivia Park, Back: Hannah Sparkes and Maria Reynolds with Mrs. McCarthy.

Today our grade 6 girls’ basketball team will be playing in the Grade 6 Western Provincial Tournament at St. Gerard’s.  The tournament officially started on Wednesday.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to the grade 5 girls’ basketball team who won silver medals in the western provincial tournament last weekend. They lost 22-19 against Sacred Heart School in the championship game.  Also, Olivia Park, Alex Williams and Brooklynn Companion all received player of the game awards. Olivia Park and Brooklynn Companion won the Skills Competition and Alex Williams received the award for Most Sportsmanlike. Thank you to Mr. Whelan who coached the team and to all the parents and students who helped with the tournament.

Congratulations to Jenna Yetman who took part in a speak off last week at the Lion’s club.

Congratulations to Abigail Woodford and her family who won the trip with Marine Atlantic at the Winter Carnival opening at the park.

Congratulations to Olivia Park, Caylie Blake, Brooklynn Companion and Anna Brake who received silver medals in the elementary category at the Provincial Synchro Skating Championship last weekend.  Kennedi Boland, Abigail Companion, and Bethany Whelan performed an exhibition skate as members of the Silver Blades Silver Shadows Novice Team.
Over the weekend Patrick Davis and Syndee Hynes took part in the Provincial Cross Country Skiing Championships.  Sydnee placed third in Atom girls 1 km race and Patrick placed second in the Juvenile Boys 7.5 km and third place in the Juvenile Boys 8 km sprint.
 

From The Classrooms
  

The junior kindergarten classes are learning all about me, doing finger painting and self portraits.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed the long weekend. They are working on addition in math.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about the letter “q”. They are also talking about families. They are making Lenten promises.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “q”. They are also learning about lent and discussing their families.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about different shapes in art. They are learning how to skip count by 2, 5, and 10 up to 100. They are doing lots of story re-telling in simple sentences.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class are learning about Lent. They are learning about grouping sets in math. They are very excited about Arabella and Alessandra’s mom who is coming in to read to them today.


Ms. Park’s grade two class is starting measuring in math. In science they are learning about changing direction.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is very busy working on challenges for the classroom energy diet challenge. They are doing things like making green tips, eco-friendly posters and so much more!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is learning how to convert fractions and decimals in math and made a birthday card for the Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Club. The grade 5 and 6 class is skiing at Marble Mountain today with Mr. Gillard and Mr. Hiscock.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is working hard on their bridges. Mr. Carl King visited them on Wednesday afternoon to office some advice and guidance on their designs. This week they began rehearsals for the drama festival. They welcome Sarah Keeping to their class this week.  The grade 7 class prepared rants and performed them for the class.
 

Coming Up

Tuesday night is our Book Fair Family event from 6:30-8:30 pm.  Students will visit the fair with their classes on Wednesday.

Wednesday is “Leap Day” with a healthy living commotion at lunch. It is also a casual day in aid of the Laubach Literacy.

On Monday we had the 100th day of school. We had a theme day and lots of fun hundredth day activities.
On Tuesday the Student Leadership Council delivered their chocolate hearts and carnations for Valentine’s Day. We had a red and pink theme day and many classes had parties and special activities.
On Thursday we celebrated National Flag Day. Each class celebrated a different province or territory. In the afternoon we had Winter Carnival fun activities and made our annual snow sculpture. Thank you to Mr. Gillard for organizing the day’s activities.
Mr. Kevin Pearce has been working hard in our school this week volunteering to refurbish our religious statues. Thank you, they look awesome!
Today our school is hosting the grade 5 Western Provincial Girls’ Basketball Championships. This afternoon we are having a special pep rally to celebrate the team. The first game is at 3:30 pm.
The school choir is signing at the opening of the winter carnival at the old town hall tonight. Happy Winter Carnival everyone!
Our school Avon Fundraiser organized by Ms. Jennifer Park raised $840 for the playground project. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to our students, staff and families on winning the Recycle My Cell Challenge again this year. We collected over 1,300 used cell phones. As a school we collected the most cell phones across Canada. We had a special awards ceremony in our school gym for the big announcement. Special guests included Mr. Terry French, Minister of Environment, Mr. Leigh Puddister CEO of MMSB, Mayor Neville Greely, and special messages from Mr. Bernard Lord CEO of Canadian Wireless Telecommunication Association.  Thank you to Abigail Companion for filming, Mr. Graham and the choir for singing and for Mr. Gillard for looking after setting up the sound system. Congratulations to Keely Brothers who competed in gymnastics last weekend in Mount Pearl. She placed second on bars and third on vault.

Congratulations to Sam Antle whose team won gold last weekend in Port Aux Basques and Wesley Torraville whose team won a silver medal in Deer Lake.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great time on the 100th day and Valentine’s Day this week.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is having a wonderful week. They celebrated Valentine’s Day, Flag Day and the 100th day. They are learning about the letter “u”. Ryan will be having a visit from the tooth fairy this week as he lost his first tooth on Wednesday.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is doing the letter “u”. They did some Valentine’s Day crafts and they had a great time on Flag day. Their class represented Nova Scotia on Flag Day.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class made Valentine’s Day crafts and had a fun 100th day of school. They shared their favourite parts in their books.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a great week. They were very busy counting their 100th day collections and celebrating Valentine’s Day and Flag Day.


Ms. Park’s grade two class had fun celebrating the 100th day of school. They made cool Valentine’s Day valentine holders in the shape of cars. They are doing student of the week writing and learning about simple machines in science.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class finished their cross country skiing program this week. They skied down “Cartoon Alley” which was very cool. They would like to thank the awesome staff at Blow Me Down for a great four weeks. They celebrated the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day. They are looking forward to Carnival Day. They welcome a new student named Clarissa Patey to their class.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class has a new grade 5 student this week named Bruce Patey. In Math the grade 5’s are learning about measurement and the grade 6’s are learning about improper fractions. In language they are writing paragraphs about favourite pictures.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is working on a play for the Regional Drama Festival called “The Monsters Under the Bed”.  They grade 8 and 9 students are writing research papers and the grade 7’s are reading about Amelia Earhart in language class.

Coming Up
Winter Carnival day is Monday, February 20th. School will be closed.



On Tuesday we will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with pancakes. Mass this week will be on Wednesday instead of Friday for Ash Wednesday.

The Winter Carnival Spelling Bee is being hosted at St. Gerard’s on Wednesday night at 7pm. Good luck to all our s-p-e-l-l-e-r-s!

All our homeroom classes are working on the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge. There are many activities to do to help our environment.
Last Friday our students in grades 3-level 1 attended an exposition of the holy Eucharist with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group at All Hallows.
On Tuesday the grade 5 and 6 class had a bake sale. They raised $115.00.
On Wednesday the grade 7 to Level 1 students received their report cards. We hope you all did well!
On our last casual day we raised $225 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Joshua King.
The Student Leadership Council is selling chocolate hearts for Valentine’s Day. Chocolates are $0.25 each and will be delivered with the carnations on Tuesday. The money raised will be donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
 
Stars of the Week

Congratulations to the members of the grade 6 girls’ basketball team who played at the RNC tournament last weekend at St. Gerards. Thank you to Mr. Whelan for coaching the team. Maria Reynolds received a medal for Most Valuable Player. Way to go!


From The Classrooms
    

The junior kindergarten classes are getting ready for Valentine’s Day and they are making crafts for their celebration. They are doing science experiments outdoors.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class coloured valentine hearts using primary colours and learned Valentine’s Day vocabulary.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is very busy planning for an exciting week next week.  They are making valentines, 100 day t-shirts and learning about Ontario for flag day. They wish Corner Brook a happy Valentine’s Day.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is doing the letter “s”. They are finished talking about measurements and are now doing valentines crafts. They are also learning about recycling.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is   doing a healthy lunch challenge and they are talking about recycling and keeping the earth clean. In math, they are learning about weights. They are participating in the scholastic book reading challenge.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is starting a new unit in math. They are learning numbers from 1 to 100. In religion they are learning about images of God.



Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing valentines messages to a friend. They are making 100 day shirts. On Monday they made marshmallow teeth.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is excited for the 100th day of school. The grade fours had a science test on Tuesday. The grade threes are almost done their novel study on “Lost and Found”. Next Tuesday is their last day of skiing.   

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge and the Healthy Lunches Challenge. They have a social studies test today.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is working on their model bridges. The grade 7’s are working on the Amalgamated Academy’s Virtual Film Festival and Photography Contest.

Coming Up

The 100th day of school is February 13th and will be a school theme day.


February 14th is Valentine’s Day. We will have a pink and red theme day.

February 16th is Flag Day. Each class is representing a different province, in the afternoon we will also winter carnival fun activities outside in the afternoon.

Next week is teacher appreciation week!

Winter Carnival day is Monday, February 20th. School will be closed.

The grade 1 classes had a presentation called “Hug A Tree” with Christine Doucet, Sean Street and Dave Nelson. Thank you to Mme. Perez-Diaz for organizing the presentation.

Ms. Stacey Thomas has finished her work placement with our Junior Kindergarten program.

Our new basketball backboards have been installed. To celebrate we had a teacher vs. student basketball game on Thursday. Thank you to Mr. Taaffe, Mr. Whelan, Mr. King, Mr. McWhirter, and Mr. George for all their work installing the new equipment.

Mr. Brian Hancock visited our grade 5 and 6 science class this week to give a presentation on “Hazard Hamlet”. The class has recently started a new unit on electricity.

On Wednesday morning we had an in-school spelling bee to choose our students for the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee on February 23. Thank you to Mr. Hiscock and Mrs. McCarthy for organizing the bee and preparing the students. The students who will represent our school are: Gina Spencer and Clara Ryan in grade 4, Olivia Park and Alex Williams in grade 5, and Hannah Sparkes and Maria Reynolds in grade 6. Congratulations to all our wonderful spellers.

The grade 7 girls’ basketball team played an exhibition game against Presentation’s grade 7 team on Wednesday night. They played a great game.

Also on Wednesday we had a praise and worship service with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group for St. Valentine’s Day.

The girls’ basketball team has the RNC tournament this weekend.
 

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Beth Arsenault in Aero at the YBC over the weekend who had a high score of 71 in bowling and a high total of 139.
Congratulations to Mr. Taaffe and Mr. Graham who performed in the Off Broadway Player’s production of “Monty Python” last weekend.
Congratulations to Keely Brothers who competed in the Atlantic Classic gymnastics competition in PEI last weekend. Keely did a great job!

From The Classrooms
  
The junior kindergarten classes are celebrating the Chinese New Year and Ground Hog Day this week.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about same and different in science. They are also doing Ground Hog Day activities.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about the letter “g” in language. In social studies they are learning about family roles and how they change.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is learning the letter “g” and playing sight word bingo.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is  learning about capacity and how much liquid different containers can hold.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about groundhogs and doing some cool groundhog crafts. They had perfect spelling tests for three weeks in a row!


Ms. Park’s grade two class made snowmen bags on Tuesday. In math they are making graphs and making their own matter.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class has started learning about multiplication. They played a game called “meteor math” and won all 6 levels of the game. The grade 4’s are preparing for the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. They went skiing on Tuesday and had a relay race with two teams. The last skiers were Mr. Gillard and Ms. Bennett and there was a tie!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed the in-school spelling bee on Wednesday. This week they had a French quiz and a math test. In art class they are working on posters about what the future will look like.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class are started building their Popsicle stick bridges this week for National Geo-Science and Engineering Month. The grade 8-10 students are working on research papers. The grade 7 class is making movie posters in language arts.

Coming Up

Next week we are starting the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge.

The grade 5 and 6 class is having a bake sale on Tuesday.

The 100th day of school is February 13th!

Winter Carnival day is Monday, February 20th. School will be closed.
