With Halloween just around the corner, the students and
staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are getting excited. This week has
been a busy one with, special guests and fun activities.
This week is Foster Family Week and we would like to
acknowledge all the guardians out there that give kids a safe and loving
environment.
We would like to extend congratulations to our Cross Country
Running Team who participated in the Fun Run at Humber Elementary.
Ms. Neary would like to thank all of the Grade 3/4 students
who have been helping her so generously with the Green Team Composting. Thank
you; Darcy Brake, Amna Ahmad, Charlotte Sweetapple, Ryan Murphy, Derek Attwood,
Ryan Bennett, Samuel Michael, McKenna Batstone, Liam Dawe, Chenoah Park, and
Megan Williams, for all of your hard work over the past month.
We are still looking for more cell phones. Recycle My Cell
Challenge will continue until November 15th. Last year our school collected the most cell
phones in the country and we would like to collect that and more this year! So
if you or anyone you know has used cell phones, please pass them along to us!
This week we celebrated Reading Rocks NL week. We hosted an
art contest for students from Junior Kindergarten to Level 1. Our school has
been awarded a $1440.00 grant from the Raise-A-Reader Foundation for the
purpose of revitalizing our Newfoundland collection, engaging students in
reading books written by Newfoundlanders about our culture, history and people.
Newfoundland authors have visited our school to read. We would like to thank
Nellie Strowbridge for coming and reading to our Grade7-Level1 students on
Monday. Today, Don Downer is presenting to our Grade 3-6 students.
Our Enrichment students are busy preparing for the Skills
Challenge. They will be participating in Lego Robotics, Prepared Speech, Wind
Turbine, Job Skills Demonstration and Videography. This involves Grade6-9
students. Another new robotics table was built this week by volunteer, Mr.
David Gillard. Many Thanks! This new addition is a great help as robotics was
introduced to our students in Grade 3 in September.
Our Student Council is planning a scary surprise for next
week!
Class News
Junior Kindergarten: The J.K’s are preparing for Halloween
by creating Halloween decorations. The students would like to thank Cole
Lyver’s family for donating a small refrigerator to the J.K. program. There
will be firefighters visiting J.K. on Wednesday.
Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: The children are having lots of fun colouring for Halloween and listening to Halloween stories.
Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: The
students in this class are preparing for Halloween by learning spooky songs and
scary spelling.
Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class:
Everyone is learning how to write French Halloween stories!
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Science the students
are learning about the seasons. They are listening to stories from the Bible
and learning about Halloween alliteration.
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students are looking for
ghosts and creating spooky spiders for their classroom.
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class: The students are studying times tables. Math
tests have been sent home to be signed this week. They are working on Halloween
decorations.
Ms. Neary’s grade Five and Six class: The Grade 5’s and 6’s
are getting excited about Halloween. This week in Language Arts they have been
learning about the interview process.
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: They are also
excited to announce they are bringing in cell phones in aid of Recycle My Cell
Challenge and is encouraging everyone to do the same. They are working hard on their
skills challenge project.

We are slowly moving into winter, though the cold has not stopped all of the exciting activities taking place at Immaculate Heart of Mary School. We have been busy learning about the world around us and busy helping others.
Last Friday, students from K-6 participated and enjoyed the
Agricultural Fair at the Pepsi Center.
During the Agricultural Fair, two of our students took part
in the spelling bee. We would like to congratulate Clara Ryan and Gina Spencer
on their involvement and for doing such a great job! We would like to thank Ms.
Neary for organizing the participation of our school in this activity.
The Cross Country Running Team participated in the J.J.
Curling Fun Run last week and all participants had excellent runs! Their next
meet is Tuesday, October 23rd at
Humber Elementary. We would like to thank Miss Payne and the drivers; Mrs. Sam
Meade, Mr. Alex Peddle and Mrs. Nancy Sweetappple.
On Tuesday and Wednesday this week our school had our Annual
Scholastic Book Fair. This was a tremendous success exceeding our goal of $
2,250. We had $ 3,350 in sales. We would like to thank all of our students,
family and staff for their support of the book fair. We would like to extend a
special thank you to Mrs. Jackie George and her great team of teachers who
organized the fair this year.
Thank you to the Junior High Students for all of their
promotion of the Book Fair from the Media Center. They did an outstanding job.
Congratulations are extended to Clara Ryan who won a poster
for the caramel “Candy Guessing” game. We would also like to congratulate Matt
De Souza who won the “Guessing the number of pages in the book” game. Matt won
a book.
We would like to welcome College of the North Atlantic
student Charlene Edmunds to our school. She is doing a 6 week placement in the
Junior Kindergarten program.
Thank you to our school’s Public Health Nurse, Denise Graham,
who did a hand washing session with our Kindergarten Class and a Needs
Assessment with all of our students.
The grade 5’s would like to extend a thank you to the
representatives from Gideon, Ross and Debbie Rowsell, who presented the grade
5’s with their New Testaments.
Girls’ basketball practice, Grade 3- Level 1, is taking
place every Saturday from 10:00a.m.-12:00. All are welcome!
Next Week’s Special Announcements

Class News
The Junior Kindergartens: They would like to welcome Jacob
Payne to J.K. The children are excited to announce they are making creepy
crawly spiders for Halloween! They are excited Sherry Rumbolt is reading to
them in the upcoming week.
Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: This week Ms. Dwyer’s class
is learning the letter F. They too are getting ready for Halloween by creating
and decorating Jack-o-lanterns. They are talking about plants in Science.
Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: They
really enjoyed the Agricultural Fair and the bus ride there. They enjoyed
watching the chickens hatch from their eggs. They were pretty excited when a
nurse came in and talked to them about washing their hands and for reading them
a story about germs.
Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class: They are learning about clouds and how they
help predict the rain or snow.
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: They would like to
welcome their new student Fares Azzouni all the way from Dubai. In Social
Studies they are learning about rights and responsibilities. They are making
haunted houses in Art and writing about how spooky their houses are.
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: This week the Grade 2’s are
learning about odd and even numbers in Math. They are also learning about
people who made big changes. They are going
to start learning about spiders very soon.
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class: The students in Ms. Payne’s class just
finished up a unit on patterns. There will be a multiplication quiz on 8’s next
Friday.
Ms. Neary’s grade five and six class: The Grade 5’s and 6’s
are getting excited about Halloween. They are going to start decorating their
classroom today! They would like to report they had an awesome time at the
Agricultural Fair and really liked petting the animals.
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: They are
still preparing for Skills Canada. Some of the activities include prepared
speech, video production, robotics, cooking and building wind turbines.

The
exciting month of October continues to unfold for students and staff at
Immaculate Heart of Mary School. While this past week was a short one, students
and staff are continuing their hard work. Next week will lead us into, another
busy and fulfilling week at I. H.M.S.
We would
like to thank our students, families and staff for their generous donation of
food items to The Thanksgiving Day Food Drive. Thanks are extended to the parents
and grandparents who helped serve the delicious dinner prepared by Academy
Canada. We would like to thank the wonderful chefs! The Grade 1 and 2 choir and
Grade 6 band performed at the dinner and did a great job. Many thanks are
extended to Mr. Graham and Mrs. McHugh for organizing the music and Olivia Park
who was our emcee, Thanks!
Congratulations
are extended to Makayla Lanni and her family. Makayla has a new baby sister!
Last
weekend, Douglas Mackenzie participated in YC in St. John’s. We hope you had a
great time and learned a lot!
Four
figure skaters from our school travelled to Grand Falls this weekend. Anna
Brake, Claire Brake, Caylie Blake, and Olivia Park took part in a figure
skating seminar that allows the girls to further their skating skills.
Congratulations are extended to Caleb Rashleigh and Ella
Rashleigh who won a medal at a marathon for diabetes in Goose Bay.
Our Cross Country Running Team participated in the J.J. Curling Fun Run on Wednesday and had a great showing. Congratulations are extended to the team and to their Coach, Ms. Payne. The team would like to thank Mrs. Sweetapple, Mrs. Meade and Mr. Antle who provided the transportation.

On
Tuesday teachers participated in their first Professional Development Day.
Teachers focused on their particular teaching areas. Teachers also met on grade levels discussing such things as CRT
assessments. They would like to thank Mr. Hancock for his informative
presentation on Smart Board and Smart Board software.
The
I.H.M.S. community raised $911.95 for the Western Memorial Radiothon.
Congratulations and thanks are extended to students, parents and staff for
their generosity to the fundraiser.
Recycle
My Cell Phone Challenge begins on October 15th and runs until
November 15th. We are asking for our families and community to
donate any used cell phones. Last year, we recycled 1300 cell phones and we
would like to beat that number this year.
This
evening the Grade 5’s will be participating in the Annual Agriculture Spelling
Bee. The Spelling Bee will be taking place at the Pepsi Center starting at
7:00p.m.

Weeks’ Special Announcements:
Monday: Students can wear their work-out outfits to school in aid
of the Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Donation for this day is $1.
Tuesday: We are excited to announce the annual Scholastic Book Fair
will be holding its Family Night from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. in the library. We
would like to invite everyone to drop by and have a look!
Class News
The
Junior Kindergartens: The children are excited to announce they are learning
about Fire Prevention week. They are making fire trucks and fire hats. They are
also learning to stop, drop and roll, in order to help protect them from fire!
Ms.
Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: This week Ms. Dwyer’s class is learning the letter
T. Her class is very excited about visiting the Agriculture Fair. They plan to
take in the animal petting farm and the farmers’ market.
Mme.
Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: The French Immersion
Kindergarten class is excited about the Agriculture fair. They are also happy
to report they are learning about the letter D and about French words that
begin with D. In Language Arts, they are learning about seasonal changes,
colors, and how they connect with words and ideas.
Mme.
Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class: We are happy to be using our new Language Art
(French) program called AIM. We are gesturing our way to speaking French
fluently.
Mrs.
George’s Grade One English class: In Language Arts they have started Halloween
writing. In Mathematics they are learning about numbers and ten frames. They
are really excited about the book fair coming up next week.
Ms.
Park’s Grade Two class: This week the Grade 2’s are learning how to skip count
in Mathematics. They are excited to report they are starting Halloween crafts
to prepare for their favourite time of year.
Ms.
Payne’s Grade Three and Four class: Next
week there will be a Math test on patterns and numbers. We would like thank
Derek Atwood and Ryan Bennett for hosting in our media center this week.
Ms.
Neary’s grade five and six class: The Grade 5 and 6’s are excited to report
they are looking forward to the Agriculture Spelling Bee tonight. They would
like to wish all participants good luck!
Mr.
Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: They are still preparing for Skills
Canada. They would like to inform some of the areas they are preparing for
include Robotics and Public Speaking Skills.

during Medical Theme Day at I.H.M.S. in support of the Western Memorial
Regional Hospital Foundation Radiothon
The beginning of October has brought with it excitement and
loving gestures from the students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary. Thanksgiving has come around again and there have been signs
of Thanksgiving all over our school.
We would like to welcome our new student Corey-Leigh Seaward
to our school.
The Medical Theme Day in aid of the Western Memorial
Hospital Radiothon was an incredible success. Through the help of students, our
school was able to raise in excess of $500.00. The following students Dayana De
Lima, Gabrielli Da Silva, Matheus De Souza, Luan Marcolino Dias, Mira Ismail,
Cameron Peddle, Bruce Patey, Keely Brothers, MacKenzie Brothers, Maria Reynolds
and our four high school Brazilian students bought the cheque to the radio
station on Friday afternoon. We would like to Mrs. Reynolds who helped drive.
We would also like to thank the staff and students of I.H.M.S. for their
generosity.
We would like to thank Michelle
Hamlyn, and Melanie Murphy, from the department of forestry. We would like to
thank them for coming to our school and holding tree planting sessions with us.
Also last week, Mrs. McHugh attended a music conference in
St. John’s where she learned a lot.
On Wednesday, our Cross Country Running Team participated in
the C.C. Loughlin race. Congratulations are extended to Sam Antle, Liam Dawe,
Jayden Lempriere, Samuel Michael, Ryan Murphy, Bruce Patey, Clarissa Patey,
Jack Ryan, Gina Spencer, Charlotte Sweetapple, Alex Williams, and Megan
Williams on an excellent showing. The team would like to thank Hannah Sparkes
(Junior Coach), Mr. Gillard and Ms. Payne for all of their work.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our
Veggie Order fundraiser. Veggie orders were distributed this past week. We sold
715 bags of vegetables.
Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and we would like to
extend a special thanks to our students and staff that brought in food items
during the week. Food items were collected and made into food hampers.
Today we hosted our annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. We would
like to thank Academy Canada who prepared the delicious meals as well as our
parent volunteers who helped served.
Today Mr. Spencer’s Science classes are participating in the
ACAP Trading Boats for Books. We hope they enjoy themselves and have lots of
fun!
Today is World Teacher’s Day. We would like to thank our
teachers for the wonderful work they do not only in their classrooms but for
all they do for the spirit of our school.
We would like to welcome Mrs. Shirley Porter as a volunteer
to our Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program.
We would like to congratulate Ms. Meade on here convocation
from university today.
This past weekend Caylie Blake and Olivia Park competed in
the Rebecca Pack Friendship Figure Skating Competition in Torbay.
Congratulations are extended to both Caylie Blake who won a gold medal in the
juvenile, under11 category and to Olivia Park who had a strong skate.

The Junior Kindergartens: The J.K’s this week would like to
kindly thank Chase’s grandmother, Sherry Rumbolt for reading to them this past
week.
Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: This week Ms. Dwyer’s
Kindergarten class has been focusing on the letter H in Language Arts. They
have been preparing for Thanksgiving by creating crafts and getting excited for
our Thanksgiving Dinner.
Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: The
French Immersion Kindergarten class has been exploring different topics. In
Science they are learning about the Sun. In Mathematics they are learning
numbers 1-10 in French and are taking part in various educational physical
activities.
Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class: The
Grade One French Immersion class is happy to announce they are starting to
learn how to read. The Grade Two French Immersion children are learning their
Bonne Actions de Graces.
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The English Grade One
class is writing about things they are thankful for, making turkeys in Art
class, and in Science, learning about the weather. They would like to wish
everyone a Happy Thanksgiving weekend.
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: There are many fun educational
activities taking place in the Grade Two class this week. They planted flowers
in science so they can learn about the life cycle of plants. They also learned
about how animals survive in winter and are making bird houses. And, like other
classes, writing about what they are thankful for.
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class: This week the grade
three and four class had an excellent time at the Chrappa’s apple orchard this past Monday.
Thank-you from the grade ¾ class for your hospitality. In Science they are
exploring interactions between Earth and human nature.
Ms. Neary’s grade five and six class: In Language Arts the
Grade 5/6’s are learning about different forms of poetry and writing haikus for
the Canadian Library Month Poetry Contest. They are also excited to report they
are getting ready to elect classroom representatives for the Student Council.
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: They are
preparing for the quickly approaching Skills Canada. They are learning more in
the area of photography from Mr. Spencer and will be having another photography
session soon.
