Santa Claus visited our school last week! Thank you to Mr. Reynolds for taking our photos with Santa.

Our second Advent candle was lit by Mme. Ryan’s class. They did an excellent job.

Our school float for the Santa Claus parade was awesome! We would like to say thank you to all the students and teachers who worked on the float. We would like to send a special thank you to Mrs. Bruce-Robertson who helped with painting and Mr. King and Mr. McCarthy who helped with constructing the float on Friday evening. Also, thank you to Jim Conway of Conway’s Towing who provided the flatbed and Humber Valley Paving who provided the space to prepare the float.

On Saturday we held our annual tree trimming social. Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class organized a fun afternoon at school. Thank you to all the families who celebrated with us.

The grade six girls’ basketball team represented our school at the Tiny Titans basketball tournament at Corner Brook Regional High last weekend. Thank you to their coach Lilana Williams and the girls for doing an amazing job.

Our Christmas concert was last night. Everyone looked and sounded great. Thank you to Mrs. Michael’s and Mr. Graham for helping us be so awesome.

The Chamber Choir is singing today at the Senior’s Complex at 1:00 pm.

We are still collecting items for the food bank, stockings for seniors and the firefighter’s toy drive. Thank you for all your donations.

Stars of The Week

Congratulations to basketball players Makenzy Bishop, Emma Doman and Telicia Young who won Player of the game awards last weekend. Also, Makenzy Bishop won Most Valuable Player of the tournament for our school.

Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class who were winners of the Winter Carnival Slogan contest!

Congratulations to Craig Bishop who received a medal for Karate a few weeks ago.

Congratulations to Fares Azouni who received an award for sparring in Stephenville this past weekend at a Tae Kwon Do competition.

Congratulations to hockey players Samuel Blackwood, Carter Bromley, Natalie Caines, Jakson Ganz, Alister MacDonnell, Samuel Michael, and Saleem Obeid who received medals in a tournament last weekend.

Congratulations to our winners in the Legion’s Remembrance Day poster and essay contests.

The winners for the poster contest were: Sarah Skinner for third place in the kindergarten colour poster contest, Natalie Parsons, third place in the junior colour poster contest, Ava Ignor for fourth place in the junior colour poster, and Maria Reynolds for fourth place in the intermediate colour poster contest.

The winners for the essay contest were: Bridgett Sparkes for third place in the junior essay, Makenzy Bishop for fourth place in the junior essay, Gina Spencer for first place in the junior essay, Juan Ramirez for fourth place in the intermediate essay and Hajra Ahmad for third place in the intermediate essay.

Gina Spencer also won third place in the junior poetry category.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are saying goodbye to Georgia Hancock this week. She is moving o Saskatchewan. The class had a small party for her on Thursday. Ms. Crocker’s afterschool children made a wonderful display of the true meaning of Christmas. Miriam and Noah Conte are very exicted about their new baby brother Leo.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has been very busy practicing for the Christmas concert. All of their hard work paid off. It was a big success. They have finished off the week with snowman building and hot chocolate. They learned that a marshmallow in French is called “une guimauve”.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is very busy preparing for Christmas. They had a great time at the Christmas concert! They loved singing with all the other kindergarten classes.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is busy getting ready for Christmas. They have been doing all sorts of Christmas crafts and activities. Their Elf, Chippy, has been hiding in lots of new places.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is working hard on mental math. They are also doing a lot of Christmas vocabulary and they are learning to read a book about Christmas. They are excited to be painting their own window sticks.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing subtraction stories in math. In social studies they are learning about needs and wants. They were super excited to do the welcome poem at the concert last night.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is having fun making reindeer portraits in art. They had a lot of fun practicing for the Christmas concert. They are making movie scripts in science class about hunting and helping the environment.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class were busy this week practicing for the Christmas concert. They are very proud that they have learned two Christmas songs: Noel Russe (Russian Christmas) and Meilleurs Voeux (Best Wishes). They were on stage with all the French Immersion classes. It was an awesome moment. Mme. LaChance is very proud of them!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class are excited about Christmas. They made beautiful angel ornaments out of different types of pasta. Congratulations to Heather Cooper, Clare Coleman, Amna Ahmad and Emily Murley who represented our school at the grade 6 basketball tournament. They held their own the court with the grade 5 and six students.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great time planning the tree trimming social last weekend. The grade 5 students are working on Christmas demand writing this week. They are using their imaginations! They would like to thank Mrs. Jane Bruce-Robertson who visited their class on Monday to make luminaries with them. They loved it! All the students are looking forward to the Christmas break.

Ms. Jones’s junior high and level 1 class is helping to bring in items for the Food Drive, Toys for the firefighters and stocking items for seniors. In language class they are finishing up their novel studies before the Christmas break.

Coming Up

On Tuesday we are going ice skating at 9:30 am at the Pepsi Centre.

On Wednesday we are having a school pancake breakfast. The Christmas variety show will be Thursday afternoon. School will be dismissed for Christmas break on Friday at noon!

It’s been a busy week at Immaculate Heart of Mary School! To start off, last Friday, the grade six to level one students who participated in the Intermediate Skills Challenge showed off their skills in the gymnasium for the whole school. It was a great hit. They did awesome!

Also on Friday were the photo re-takes for people who wanted to get their pictures re-done.

Mrs. George, Mrs. Foley and Mrs. Hodder recently returned from St. John’s where they were learning about the Little Green Thumbs program. They are all very excited to bring this program to our school!

On Monday, the first Advent candle was lit by Mrs. George’s grade one class. They explained the meaning of Advent and we sang a song. Great job, everyone!

Everybody is busy preparing for the Christmas parade and Christmas concert. We are all very excited!

We would like to thank Mr. Rodney Antle who donated a Foosball table to our school this week.

The grade 6 girls’ basketball team will be participating in the Tiny Titans basketball tournament at Corner brook High! We hope they do well.

The Junior High students would like to thank Barb and Bart Anderson who helped with driving students in the Intermediate Skills Challenge.

Stars of The Week

Congratulations to Bridgett Sparkes who participated in the Provincial heats and Finals Invitiational meet in Gander last weekend. Bridgett placed 6^th in the 50 m back and 100 m back, 10^th in the 100 m free, 14^th in the 50 m free and 16^th in the 200 m free.

McKenna Batstone and Anna Brake travelled to Stephenville last weekend for a figure skating test day. McKenna passed her test in Canesta Dance and Anna passed her senior bronze test. Congratulations, girls! Also, Jenna Cammie passed her Dutch Waltz in figure skating.

Congratulations to Gabriel Rowsell who received his badge from swimming.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are busy getting ready for Christmas and doing lots of Christmas crafts.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is very excited that their elf on the shelf showed up this week. He’s been doing lots of silly things. They are busy preparing for the Christmas concert.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on five frame grids in math. They are hard at work learning their Christmas concert piece. They are also practicing a special Christmas dance for the Christmas variety show.

Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class is working on a wall of fame and doing all kinds of Christmas decorating. They are also learning about each other.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has started making some Christmas crafts. They are learning the difference between needs and desires. They are finishing their discussions about the seasons, changes in the weather and nature during each season.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing friendly letters to Santa this week. They are learning all about Advent in religion class and are starting some Christmas crafts.

Ms. Park’s grade two class had fun making pita break pizza’s for a fun science activity. They would like to thank Mr. Peter Antle of Greenwood Inn and Suites for bringing in materials and the milk, as well as Mrs. Nadine Perrett for helping them out. They are having fun making Christmas crafts and practicing for the Christmas concert.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class worked hard to make 3D snowflakes to decorate their classroom. There is a real snowstorm in the class! For social studies they did a survey about where people were born. The results are 74 per cent were born in Newfoundland, 15 per cent were born in another province, and 11 per cent were born in another country. In IHMS 8 different countries are represented!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class are writing stories about being stuck in a snow globe. They are creating snow globes in art to go with their writing. In French they are learning about their school and enjoyed the scavenger hunt to find Mr. Ryley. All four teams found him in record time.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are making grid drawings in art class and having fun doing it. In religion class they made ornaments for the Jessie tree. In gym they are excited about starting floor hockey and in French they are making friendship cubes.

Ms. Jones’ junior high and level 1 class is busy preparing for the Christmas parade. They helped to prepare the signs to go up on the float and planned some of the ideas. They are also busy practicing their band pieces for the Christmas concert next week.

Coming Up

This Saturday is the Annual Lion’s Club Christmas Parade. Students wishing to ride on the float should meet at the Pepsi Centre at 4:30 pm.

Our annual Tree Trimming Social is being organized by the grade five and six class. It will be this Sunday beginning at 2 pm.

IHMS’s Christmas concert is on December 12 at 7 pm. Students have to be at school in full uniform for 6:30 pm. All classes are very excited!

Last week at IHMS on Wednesday we had a parent-teacher night. Loads of parents came and received a lot of good news about their kids.

At our bake sale for the Shepherd’s Fund we raised $320. Special thanks to Mrs. Foley and our student leadership council.

IHMS’s grade 1 classes were successful in Operation Christmas Child. They filled 60 boxes! IHMS thanks Mrs. George’s and Mme. Ryan’s classes for a great job.

The recycle my cell challenge finished on Friday. Thank you everyone for the cell phone donations.

The grade 6 to level 1 students had a great trip to St. John’s. They did not leave until Friday because of the bad weather on Thursday. They would like to thank the drivers and chaperons, they were: Mr. and Mrs. Brake, Mrs. Reynolds, Mr. Sparkes, Mr. and Mrs. Brothers, Mr. Spencer, Mr. Hancock, Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. and Mrs. King.

Mr. Drew Nadon visited our school this week. He taught some classes with his brother Mr. Ryley Nadon. Mr. Drew Nadon will begin teaching in our school in January.

On Thursday IHMS had a Movember fundraiser where everyone wore a mustache and donated $1 for cancer research.

IHMS is going to have fun with “The Little Green Thumbs” program. Our teachers Mrs. Foley, Ms. Park, and Mrs. Hodder are going to a special conference in St. John’s this weekend. Good luck to them!

Stars of The Week

This week the grade six to nine students attended the Intermediate Skills Challenge in Mount Pearl, NL> We participated in Lego Robotics where for the first time, we had two teams. Hajra Ahmad and Maria Reynolds participated in TV Video Production and did an amazing job. Mira Ismail and Caroline Bruce-Robertson participated in 2-D Computer Animation creating a 11 second video with a sound clip, Alejandra Hernandez and Sara Ismail participated in Wind Turbine and won bronze medals.

Our Lego Robotics team 1 consisting Iker Aguirre, Keely Brothers, Anna MacKenzie, Nicolas Morreno, William Brice-Robertson, Gina Spencer and Clara Ryan all did an amazing job. They received awards for project innovation solution and second place for robot design.

Our second team consisting of Anna Brake, Jayden Lempriere, Douglas MacKenzie, Madison Noel, Cameron Peddle, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Jarius San Jose, and Bridgett Sparkes received an award for strategy and innovation, third place for mission points, and also received bronze medals for placing third overall provincially in all four categories. And one of the most important awards are for the coaches. Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Hancock are the two best coaches you could ask for. They helped us through everything and did all the running around all day. We all would like to give a huge thank you to our coaches for everything!

Congratulations to Craig Bishop, Chase Colbourne, and Colin Spencer and who won bronze medals in Karate.

Congratulations to, Isaac Buckingham, Cohen Mackey, Jesse Racicot and Caleb Rashleigh who won bronze medals in a novice hockey tournament this weekend.

Congratulations also to Cohen on receiving karate certificates for Awesome Flying Side Kick and Awesome Respect.

Congratulations to Ava Igno who passed her gymnastics level.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are getting ready for Christmas and doing all kinds of Christmas crafts. They can’t wait for the Christmas concert.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is busy getting ready for Christmas and decorating and singing. They’ve been having lots of winter fun. On Monday they built a new student named “Frosty” . They enjoyed wearing moustaches for Movember on Thursday. They hope we raised lots of money for cancer.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working with five frames in math and also working on the concepts of more, less and same as. They are studying the letter “n” and making Christmas art.

Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class is very excited that the elf on the shelf decided to visit them until Christmas. They are very busy making Christmas crafts.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been having fun using their addition skills to solve problems and are very excited to start subtraction. They are learning about weather and the instruments to predict the weather. They are also tracking the weather this month.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about adding and doubles in math. They are starting a new unit in social studies about needs and wants.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making fun winter crafts in art class. They are also enjoying learning about measurement and measuring their partner’s arm, hand and foot to see who is the biggest.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class is reading French books about Christmas. They are also learning new words on this topic. With these words they created riddles and they also wrote a Christmas story of their own. They have lots of imagination and creativity.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class are writing letters in the great Canadian Mail Race and are very excited to hear back. They received two letters this week from St. Rita’s Catholic Elementary School in Brampton, Ontario.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class really enjoyed the moustache day! The grade five students are learning about maps in social studies. Both classes are going on a trip to the YMCA for health class. The grade six students had a great time at the skills challenge and can’t wait to do it again next year. They were also super excited that Anna MacKenzie was interviewed for Rogers Cable last week!

Ms. Jones’ junior high and level 1 class had a great time in St. John’s last weekend. The grade seven students had a math quiz on decimals, fractions, and percents. The grade eight students are learning how to calculate the volume of prisms.

Coming Up

IHMS’s Christmas concert is coming up fast. It is on December 12. All classes are very excited!

They are also very excited for Santa Claus parade and Santa’s visit to our school.
