Our Christmas concert was a huge success. Thank you to all our students and families for another wonderful concert. Mr. Dave Smallwood won the ticket draw. Thank you to Mrs. Deckert and all the volunteers for the bake sale and homemade knit items.
Mr.
Graham and members of the Chamber Choir preformed at the Seniors’ Complex last
week. Thank you to Ms. Rumbolt and Mme. Lachance for accompanying the group.
Mr.
Drew Nadon along with students Hajra Ahmad, Nathan Anderson and Douglas
MacKenzie visited Mr. Frank Diamond’s cooking class at Academy Canada last week
to present them with a card and token of thanks for preparing our Thanksgiving
dinner this year.
The
grade 6 Boys’ Basketball team played last weekend at the Tiny Titans Tournament.
Makenzy Bishop, Isaac Buckingham, Aria Kazerouni and Jordan Park were chosen
for Player of the game awards. Thank you to the coaches and parents for
supporting the teams.
On
Tuesday, the Knights of Columbus sponsored a skating party for our school at
the Pepsi Centre. Everyone had a great time! Thank you for the skating and the
delicious snack afterwards. Makenzy
Bishop was involved with the RNC Food Drive on Tuesday. Makenzy visited the
schools in Corner Brook to collect items that were donated for the Christmas
Food Drive.
On
Wednesday our school hosted a pancake breakfast for our students and staff.
Special thanks to Mrs. George, Ms. Park, Mme. Lachance, Mrs. Vincent, Ms.
Crocker Mme. Ryan and Mrs. Anderson for preparing the pancakes! Also, on
Wednesday the kindergarten to grade 4 French Immersion classes attended a movie
at Grenfell Campus. The students had a wonderful time.
Today
we are having our Christmas variety show. The show begins at 10:45 and is open
to all our families. School will dismiss for Christmas vacation at noon. We
would like to thank all of our students, staff and families for their generous
contributions to the firefighters toy drive, food drive and stockings for
seniors.
School
will re-open on Monday, January 5, 2015. Happy Holidays!
The
junior kindergarten classes made reindeer food this week! The early childhood
education students from the College of the North Atlantic finish their
placement today. The students and staff would like to thank Rebecca Butler,
Wanda-Lee Bowles and Bobbi-Marie Clarke for their work with the class.
Mme.
Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class really enjoyed the week’s
activities leading up to Christmas break. The students have also been busy
doing language centres in class. They would like to wish everyone a wonderful
holiday season!
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a lot of fun skating on Tuesday. They
really enjoyed the yummy pancakes served at the breakfast on Wednesday and are
looking forward to the variety show today.
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class was busy making a special surprise for their
parents for Christmas. They have been enjoying their Christmas activity sheets
and are really looking forward to the variety show today. They would like to
wish all the readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had so much fun skating on Tuesday. We
would like to say thank you to the Knights of Columbus for the fantastic
morning skating and the snacks afterward. They have been busy completing
activities this week to clue up things before Christmas. They are very excited
to begin their Christmas break today. The class would like to congratulate
Sarah Connolly and her family on the birth of her baby sister this week!
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class is having a very busy and exciting week. They
are making special gifts for their parents this week. In language arts they are
doing some writing for Christmas about what they would do if Santa got stuck in
their chimney and what they would give baby Jesus as a gift if they could.
Today they are having popcorn, hot chocolate and a movie.
Mme.
O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class is writing
Christmas stories and have been busy in math studying data. They would like to
wish everyone a most joyous holiday season!!
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class had
a blast at skating this week! They will be putting the finishing touches on
their Christmas craft (shhh...it's a secret) and the Grade 3's have been
preparing for their skit in the variety show.
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class had a really fun week!
They made presents for their parents. On Wednesday they went to Grenfell Campus
to watch a movie in French. They also went skating at the Pepsi centre and participated
in the variety show. At last, they are ready to enjoy their Christmas holidays.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class finished making their printed cards in art
just in time for Christmas. The students really enjoyed the skating and pancake
breakfast this week. On Thursday, they had a pizza party for lunch compliments
of Emma’s mom and step-dad, Kara Maloney and Joe Kemp.
Mr.
Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had an old fashion Newfoundland
Kitchen party on Wednesday. They enjoyed some Newfoundland treats, practiced
some Newfoundland phrases and dressed up to go mummering in the school. They
would like to congratulate the students on their English/Portugese song “So
This Is Christmas” at the concert last week.

Father
Terry celebrated mass last Thursday with the grade two students in our chapel.
This
Monday we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with Mrs. Coleman
and the prayer group with an hour of prayer and song at All Hallows Parish.
The
grade three to six boys’ basketball team played a game at Templeton collegiate
on Tuesday afterschool. The team is being coached by Danielle Wamboldt with Mr.
Ryley Nadon. The boys had a great game! They will play in the Tiny Titans
tournament afterschool today at 5 pm and 7 pm and again on Saturday at Corner
Brook Regional High school.
Our
skills challenge team had an excellent trip to St. John’s last week and really
enjoyed the skills challenge. Our
students took part in First Lego League robotics, wind turbine design, graphic
design and TV video production. The team
would like to thank all their sponsors and individuals who helped with their
projects and fundraising. They would like to send special thank you to Mr.
Scott Reynolds and Mrs. Janet Joyce. As well as the members of the community
who supported their fundraisers.
On
Thursday evening we held our annual Christmas concert. We would like to thank
Mr. Graham, Ms. Joffred and all the teachers and students for a great concert.
Also thank you to Mr. McCarthy for filming the concert. Thursday was also a Christmas theme day.
Students wore red, white and green clothing.
This
week the Student Leadership Council is collecting items for stockings for
seniors, the firefighter’s toy drive and food for the food bank. Donation boxes
are located in each classroom.
We
are happy to report that we were able to collect another 5,000 bread tags for
the campaign to purchase a wheelchair for an elderly person in South Africa. We
will continue to collect bread tags throughout the year.
We
would like to thank Mr. Todd Doman for donating a water cooler to our school
cafeteria.
Last
week the Rotary Clubs of Corner Brook announced a donation of $3,000 for the
kids Eat Smart Program. This money will given out to school breakfast programs
in the Corner Brook area. Thank you for your support!
The
chamber choir will sing this afternoon at the Senior’s Complex.
The
grade 6 girls’ basketball team will play an exhibition game at Templeton
afterschool.
We
would like to send our condolences to Father Leonard on the passing of his
father.
STARS OF THE WEEK |
Congratulations to the skills challenge robotics team consisting of Makenzy Bishop, Max Chrappa, Emma Doman, Douglas MacKenzie, Samuel Michael, Jordan Park, Maria Reynolds, Paige Walsh, and Telicia Young who received an award for the research on the topic of learning solutions. Congratulations to Nathan Anderson who received a silver medal in graphic design and the wind turbine team consisting of Jayden Lempriere and Anna MacKenzie received silver medals. Great work, everyone!

French song for the concert this week. They have been doing some special
Christmas activities and working on their Christmas vocabulary.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is busy practicing for the Christmas
concert this week. They are learning the letter “m” and are studying more and
fewer in math.
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class had a wonderful time at the Christmas concert
last night. They are doing a special craft for their parents for Christmas
today. The star of the week is Lily Smallwood.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class have finished their Christmas carolers
art work. The students were very excited to sing in both English and French in
the Christmas concert. They hope everyone enjoyed the show.
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class has been working very hard to prepare for the
Christmas concert this week. They were very excited to welcome everyone to the
concert and be part of the play with the grade one students. They are also busy
doing many Christmas writings and crafts.
Mme.
O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class is finishing up their research on
reindeer (renne). They have learned that
the caribou is Canada’s first reindeer.
The Eskimo would use caribou for pulling sleds, food, clothing, and milk
for their babies. Caribou raise their
tails when they recognize danger. They are very good swimmers and can travel up
to 2,600 km a year.
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class enjoyed the Christmas concert this week.
The students are looking forward to the Christmas break next week. This week
the students completed their project for the energy challenge and their
paintings on warm and cool colours.
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class worked very hard on a
creative idea for the Kids in Charge Contest. To promote energy conservation
they created a Lego book. They built scenes showing energy conservation. They
took photos of the scenes they built to illustrate their tips. One of the
examples was to heat food up in the microwave rather than the oven to save
energy.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class are making hand printed Christmas cards
this week. Each student made six copies of their design for their families. The
students are looking forward to the Christmas vacation.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had
a great time on their trip last week. The students were especially excited to
visit Signal Hill and Fort Amherst. The exchange students performed a song in
Portuguese and English on Thursday evening at our school Christmas
Concert. The students are also busy
finishing their novel studies and assignments before the Christmas break.COMING UP... |
Our
school will be skating on Tuesday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
On
Wednesday we will have a school pancake breakfast.School will close on Friday, December 19 at noon. There will be a school variety show after recess on Friday.

The
intermediate skills challenge team held a drop and shop fundraiser at our
school on Saturday. Thank you to the families that supported this fundraiser.
Everyone had a great time. The students are also selling tickets within the
school on a five pound chocolate bar. Tickets are available through homeroom
classes. They are $1 each or three tickets for $2. The draw will be on December
19th.
On
Sunday our school held the annual tree trimming social. We would like to thank
all the families for their support. We
would also like to thank Ms. Cindy Kawaja for the Christmas sing-along.
The
student leadership council hosted “Moustaches for Movember” on Tuesday.
Students came to school with moustaches on or could get one painted at recess.
All donations are in aid of cancer research.
Our
school collected 1,046 used and broken cell phones! Great job everyone!
We
are still collecting bread tags until December 11.
Santa
visited our school this week on Wednesday for class photos.
The
grade six to level 1 students are competing in the Intermediate Skills
Challenge tomorrow in St. John’s. We would like to wish them the best of luck!!

Congratulations to Charlotte and Isabelle Mercier on their performances in Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador’s production of “A Christmas Carol” last week.
The
junior kindergarten classes are working on the number “6” and the letter “f”.
In religion class they are doing Christmas activities. The students welcome
Danté Pennell to their class this week.
Mme.
Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class really enjoyed the moustache day.
Today is Mme. Brake’s last day, the students would like to wish her “Bonne
Chance”. On Monday, Mme. Brett will begin as their new teacher.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class started decorating their classroom tree for
Christmas. In social studies they are learning about needs and wants. They are writing the letter “w”.
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class is writing friendly letters to Santa this
week. They were so happy that he dropped in to see them! They are using doubles
to add in math. They lit the first candle of the Advent wreath on Monday in
chapel. They performed a short play about the birth of Jesus. Lily Smallwood
was Mary, Daniel Osmond was Joseph, Sarah Buckingham lit the candle and Jake
Morey held the star. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch the
lighting of the first candle for Advent.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning some Christmas vocabulary
and learning about Advent. They are also talking about the digestive system and
the Canada’s food guide. This has been a fun and informative topic.
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class is making reindeer portraits. They are learning
about different graphs in math. They are having lots of fun doing a unit on
Robert Munsch.
Mme.
O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class is finishing their work on their
gingerbread man and will be starting their study on reindeer. The caribou are
Canada’s reindeer. They hope to learn more interesting things about the
caribou.
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class was very excited to meet with Santa on
Wednesday for class photos. The grade three’s are putting the finishing touches
on their book “T’was the Day Before Christmas Vacation” and the grade four’s
are working on a simulation of the Canadian government in social studies.
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class was very excited to
receive their first letter from Québec. Their pen pals enjoyed the same things
as them – sports, theatre, pokémon and animals. This week they wrote a
Christmas card for each of their pen pals in St-Malo, Québec. Soon, they will
talk to them through skype.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class is continuing to read “A Dog’s Life”. They
are learning a lot about evaluating their reading and supporting their opinions
with evidence. The grade six students are in St. John’s for the Intermediate
Skills Challenge. The grade five students would like to say good luck to the
grade six to level 1 students!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is
in St. John’s today visiting the Basilica, St. John the Baptist, the Geoscience
Centre and going rock climbing at Axtion. Tomorrow they are competing in the
intermediate skills challenge at the College of the North Atlantic in St.
John’s. Last Friday evening the English
1201 students went to see TNL’s production of “A Christmas Carol” as part of
their novel study.COMING UP... |

The
grade one classes were very happy to report that they filled 84 shoe boxes for
Operation Christmas Child. Last year they packaged 60 boxes. A special thank
you goes out to all our students and families for their support of the
fundraiser.
Our
school will continue to collect bread tags until December 11. We reached our
goal of 5,000 bread tags and have collected another 2,200 bread tags. For every
5,000 bread tags collected a wheelchair will be purchased for an elderly person
in South Africa.
This
week students in kindergarten to grade six took part in presentations on Monday
and Tuesday with representatives from Newfoundland Light and Power. The theme
was “Take Charge”. Sessions were given by Ashleigh Halliday and Carl Bishop.
All the classes really enjoyed the presentations.
On
Thursday our students and staff wore special moustaches to support Movember.
Students donated $1 for men’s health initiatives. Student Leadership council
students were collecting donations and painting moustaches for students throughout
the day.
The
grade 6 girls’ basketball team is playing in a tournament this weekend at
Grenfell Campus. The first game is today at 5:30 pm.
This
Saturday our grade 6 to level 1 students are hosting a Drop and Shop
Fundraiser. Families are invited to drop their child at the school between 10
am and 4 pm while they Christmas shop. Children aged three and over are welcome
to attend for a minimum donation of $20.
Sunday
is our annual Tree Trimming Social. New families are invited to bring an
ornament to hang on the school Christmas tree. Join us for prizes, snacks and
singing from 4:00-5:30 pm.
The
gym classes will continue broomball for the next week. After this, Mr. Ryley
Nadon will be starting the first annual Christmas mini-hockey tournament.
CLASS NEWS |
The

have begun practicing for the Christmas concert. They welcomed Shane Matthews
to their classroom this week.
Mme.
Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class are busy learning their French song
for the Christmas concert. They were very excited to wear their moustaches on
Thursday.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is excited that their plants have started
to grow. They have tomatoes, peas and basil. They made moustaches for Movember
to wear on Thursday. The class would like to wish Katie McCarthy a happy
birthday!
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class read a beautiful story this week called “Stone
Soup” and made their very own delicious soup! They are learning about
volunteers in social studies. They were filled to have filled 84 boxes for
Operation Christmas Child this year. They would like to send a huge thank you
to everyone who helped make this possible. The star of the week is Kate
Lombard.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has begun a new math unit on
subtraction. The students are learning about the five senses and are excited to
learn how their sense of hearing works.
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class has started a new unit in science. The students
are very excited to learn all about movement. They are reading the story “Mmm
Cookies” by Robert Munsch and baked some yummy cookies of their own. They are
also working on beautiful Christmas scenes in art.
Mme.
O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is pleased to see that their lettuce
is finally growing. It took eight days for the seeds to germinate in the green
house. They have begun a new unit on reindeer in preparation for Christmas. The
students are getting excited for Christmas as they have started practicing for
the Christmas concert.
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class is working on painting snowmen using warm
and cool colours this week. The class enjoyed a pizza party on Wednesday to
celebrate meeting and beating their goal of collecting 50 cell phones. The
grade three students are looking forward to watching the TV commercials they
produced!
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class were very busy this
week. The grade three students learned about germination. They planted and
observed a bean coming up out of the soil. Did you know that there is a tiny
plant in a bean? The grade four students read about Braille’s alphabet and
Louis Braille. He was a blind man who created an alphabet that blind people
could read. Louis Braille changed the lives of many people who wanted to read
and learn.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class were writing Remembrance Day essays this
week. They are all looking forward to seeing everyone at the Tree Trimming
Social on Sunday. The students were busy planning the different activities for
this event.
Mr.
Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is hosting a Drop and Shop
Fundraiser on Saturday. The students are one week away from their big trip to
St. John’s!
