Our junior high class travelled to Pasadena last Thursday to participate in the Western Central Region Drama Festival. They performed very well and got lots of laughs from the audience during their performance of Café Murder.
 

 
Last week Alexandra Young visited the school to give away free tickets to the Silver Blades Ice Show. The winners were Samuel Michael and Chenoah Park.

Our elementary students presented speeches last week as part of their language arts class. Students from grades 4, 5, and 6 were selected to participate in the annual Elementary Speak Off. The speak off was on Tuesday evening in our school cafeteria. Members of the local Rotary Club were present to judge the speeches and choose an overall winner. We would like to thank Mrs. Foley and Mrs. McCarthy for preparing the students.
Our girl’s grade 6 soccer team is preparing for an upcoming tournament.
On Thursday Mrs. Foley and the student leadership council prepared an Easter egg scavenger hunt. Each class was invited to take part. The hunt began with a clue dropped off to the class. The students had to answer the clue to find the next one. At the end they found a basket of Easter eggs for their class.
Our school closes on Thursday, April 17 for Easter break and will re-open on Monday, April 28. We hope everyone enjoys the Easter holiday and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate all of our students who took part in the annual Silver Blades ice show on Saturday evening. They included: Marian Ahmad, Ava Baker, Jasmine Batstone, McKenna Batstone, Samuel Blackwood, Anna Brake, Clare Brake, Natalie Caines, Jenna Cammie, Kaitlyn Coade, Ivor Cook, Reegan Curtis, Carter Hubley, Rebecca Janes, Leah Lainey, Rotem Phillips-Grobbelaar, Hala Parsons, Lydia Parsons, Natalie Parsons, Frankie Targett, Theo Thorne, Charlise Simmonds, Abigail Woodford and Lilah Walsh. Congratulations to all our students on a great show!
 


Congratulations to students who received awards at the Silver Blades annual banquet. Clare Brake received the Most Dedicated Skater Award, Jenna Cammie received the Most Advanced Skater Award and Theo Thorne received the Most Improved CanSkate Award.
Congratulations to Keely Brothers on her performance at the provincial gymnastics championship.
 
Many of our students received awards in the national Geosciences’ and Engineering month poster and essay contest. In the grade 2-3 group B Western District poster category Arabella LeBlanc received first place, Colin Spencer received second place, and Caleb Rashleigh received third place. In the grades 4-6 group C Western District poster contest Telicia Young received first place, Madison Noel received second place, and Clara Ryan received third place.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the true meaning of Easter through various activities. They are also having class parties, painting Easter eggs and hunting for Easter eggs. They have started the mind-up curriculum this week. On Wednesday Mr. Cory Conrad and Mr. Ian Tucker did a nutritional presentation with Ms. Perrett and Ms. Simms’s class.


Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a very busy week celebrating Easter. They wrote Easter stories, and made Easter baskets for the eggs they decorated on Wednesday. They are excited about the Easter egg scavenger hunt today! Joyeuses paques!


Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was very excited to complete some Easter crafts and activities this week. They are looking forward to the Easter egg hunt today and the teachers vs students basketball game!


Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is finished their sight word list. They have now learned 130 words!! They are preparing for Easter and learning all about the Easter story. They are even learning how to add and subtract tasty Jellybeans! Yummy!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is very excited this week. The children are really looking forward to their Easter art activity that Mme. Ryan has planned. They are also did a bunch of other fun learning activities this week. They are learning new Easter and spring vocabulary.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a great week. They really enjoyed their mind-up classes and now know the three main parts of the brain and the job each one does. They learned about Holy week in Religion class. They are very excited to have their Easter party and egg hunt today. They would like to wish all the Western Star readers a very happy Easter!

Ms. Park’s grade two class completed their World Ocean day posters this week. They are doing lots of Easter crafts. Jenna Cammie is the student of the week.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class is talking about eggs. In sciene and arts, the students made the life cycle of the chicken. They looked inside an egg to see the different parts. Today they are designing and creating a container capable of catching a flying egg!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class sampled more beans from their plants. When the purple beans were cooked they turned green! The grade 3’s have begun division in math and the grade 4’s are continuing their geometry unit.  Amna Ahmad and Cole Dumaresque represented the class in the Elementary Speak Off on Tuesday evening. They are very excited about the Easter egg scavenger egg hunt. Have a great Easter break everyone, see you on April 28th!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class have been very busy this week completing their heritage fair assignments. They had six students participate in the Elementary Speak-Off, they were: Sam Antle, Max Chrappa, Jack Ryan, Clara Ryan, Bridgett Sparkes, and Gina Spencer. As part of their art class they made Pysanka eggs. They are a traditional Ukraine Easter egg that is painted with wax and dipped in colours. At the end you melt the wax off to see the different layers of colour and pattern. The student’s eggs were beautiful.  They would like to thank Mrs. Jane Bruce-Robertson who completed this project with them.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class presented their Heritage Fair projects in language arts on Wednesday. They completed a research essay, display board and gave an oral presentation. It was a lot of work! They are now busy preparing for the “Let’s Talk Science Challenge” coming up in early May.



School re-opens on Monday, April 28th.


Our school heritage will be held on April 28th at 11 am in the school gym.


April 29th there will be a parent information session for students beginning the junior kindergarten program and full day kindergarten (English and French) in September 2014.

The Rotary Music Festival Ended last Friday. We would like to say special thanks to Mr. Graham and Mrs. Michael for all their hard work preparing the choirs and bands to perform.

This week is national volunteer week! We would like to thank all our volunteers for all they do! Our school will host our annual volunteer breakfast for volunteers in June.

The junior kindergarten staff participated in a workshop last Saturday about nutrition and outdoor play.

On Monday, the grade 6 students had a special presentation from the public health nurse, Mrs. Denise Graham.

On Tuesday the junior high class participated in a discussion and watched a movie with Mrs. Coleman as part of their preparation for Easter. Mrs. Deckert and Ms. Ochoa helped with this presentation. Mrs. Coleman also celebrated a special Easter prayer service with junior kindergarten to grade 6 students in our chapel on Wednesday.

We collected donations for the Canadian Catholic Trustees Association’s “Toonies for Tuition” campaign on Wednesday with a casual day.

The junior high class along with Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. King travelled to Pasadena on Thursday to present their play Café Murder. They did an awesome job! It was a long day, but everyone had a lot of fun. They would like to thank Mrs. Barb Anderson and Mrs. Jane-Bruce Robertson who helped transporting the students and equipment.  Also, the group would like to thank Mr. Hancock for all his technical help and Mrs. Jane-Bruce Robertson for all her help with props and costumes.

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate our students who participated in the Stars of the Festival on Tuesday evening. The students were: Simon Boitsefski, Will Brothers, Clare Coleman, and Colin Spencer. Gina Spencer participated in the Rose Bowl on Friday evening. Many of our students all received scholarship awards, including: Colin Spencer, $25 for voice and $100 for voice; Clare Coleman, $25 for voice and $25 for musical theatre; Will Brothers, $25 for voice; Simon Boitsefski, $25 for musical theatre and $25 for piano; Arabella LeBlanc, $25 for musical theatre, Sadie MacDonnell, $25 for musical theatre; Alessandra LeBlanc, $50 for musical theatre; and Gina Spencer, $50 Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship. Our Chamber choir received a $150 scholarship and out school concert band received a $100 scholarship.

Special congratulations to Gina Spencer who was chosen as the winner of the Junior Rose Bowl for the second consecutive year!

Congratulations to Bridgett Sparkes who participated in a provincial swimming meet last weekend. Bridgett performed very well, placing fourth in several categories.

Congratulations to the class winners in the YMCA create a logo contest. In grade 4 they were Amna Ahmad, Emily Murley, Jericho San Jose, Ryan Murphy, Cole Dumaresque, and Ryan Bennett. In grade 5 they were Alaura Alexander, Jack Ryan, and William Bennett. In grade 6 they were Keely Brothers, William Bruce-Robertson, and Gina Spencer.

Congratulations to school winners in the YMCA Market Your Thoughts Business essay. In grade 7 they were Mira Ismail, Jarius San Jose, Juan Ramirez and Nicolas Moreno. In grade 8 they were Hajra Ahmad, Nathan Anderson, Alejandra Hernandez, Sara Ismail, Douglas MacKenize, Maria Reynolds and Iker Aguirre.  The school winner in grade 9 was Caroline Bruce-Robertson.
 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are doing lots of Easter activities. Mr. Cory Conrad did a nutrition tour with Mrs. Crocker and Mrs. Dick’s class on Wednesday. The students really enjoyed participating in the music festival last week.

Mrs. English and Mrs. Vincent’s class would like to thank Dr. Kim Gunson who bought the class a magic movers microphone for the class.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is busy preparing for Easter and learning lots of Easter vocabulary in French. They really enjoyed the Easter celebration with Mrs. Coleman on Wednesday.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about shapes in math and doing various activities involving shapes. In religion they are doing activities related to holy week. The students are getting excited about the upcoming Easter break.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is doing all sorts of Easter activities this week.  They have been creating Easter eggs, doing “write the room” activities and enjoying all the beautiful weather outside.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning a lot about feeling. They are also learning about being good decision makers. They are very excited to begin the MindUp curriculum this week. The brain is fascinating!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about structures in science and they went on a structure hunt outside. They wrote Easter acrostic poems and have started some Easter crafts.

Ms. Park’s grade two class has started a new unit in math called addition and subtraction up to 100. They are learning about the symbols of Easter and are enjoying making Easter crafts in art. Gordon is the star of the week!

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class is reading different books about the Easter holiday. They also wrote a bunny story for Easter. The story will become a booklet. They used a lot of creativity in this project. Students created cards for their parents with little cotton ball chicks on the front.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class is continuing to work on their heritage fair projects. Their classroom garden is continuing to thrive. They sampled their first purple peacock pole beans this week and are going to be able to harvest their bush beans soon. The grade 3’s are finishing their multiplication and beginning division. The grade 4’s have completed their in-class speak off.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a math test on Thursday. They are starting their new unit in math today. Also today, they are presenting their in-class speeches.  Next week selected students will participate in the school elementary speak off.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class presented their play Café Murder in Pasadena on Thursday night as part of the Regional Drama Festival. They did an excellent job! They are busy preparing their Heritage Fair projects and are looking forward to the Easter break.

On Tuesday our school will host the annual Elementary Speak Off in our school library beginning at 7 pm.

Holy Thursday will be celebrated next week on the 17th.  Easter break begins on April 18th.

Last Wednesday School nurse, Denise Graham, along with student nurses, Hilary MacIsaac and Chelsea Lowe, did a presentation with the kindergarten classes about nutrition as part of nutrition month.
Last Friday we celebrated apple day in the breakfast program with apple parfaits, apple mini muffins, apple cereal bars and a variety of tasty apples. Students also placed their own paper apple on our giant apple tree. Thank you to Mrs. George, Mme. LaChance and Ms. Park for helping out.
Also on Friday our school public health nurse Denise Graham did a session with the grade two and three students about nutrition and physical activity.
On Sunday the junior high girls’ basketball team played a game against Gander Collegiate and Exploits Valley Intermediate in Grand Falls.  The girls had two great games! Maria Reynolds was the top scorer for IHMS. Thank you to the coaches Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Ryley Nadon as well as Mrs. Reynolds and Dr. Ishmail for driving the team to Grand Falls.
Mrs. Deckert and the sewing group would like to thank Caroline Bruce-Robertson and Betty Lou LeDrew for helping with the group afterschool on Mondays.
The grade 1 and two students had a health presentation on dental hygiene with Denise Graham on Tuesday.  Also on Tuesday the grade 1 and 2 choir had a workshop for the Rotary Music Festival at the Arts and Culture Centre.
The junior high class had a presentation from members of Net Ministries. They visited our school on Tuesday to do a presentation about Net Ministries. The students really enjoyed the presentation and the games and music they played.
On Wednesday the junior kindergarten and kindergarten choir played in the festival at the Arts and Culture Centre.  On Thursday, the grade 5 band and the grades 6-9 band performed in the festival at the Arts and Culture Centre.
On Wednesday Douglas MacKenzie and Jarius San Jose attended the Winter Carnival Snow Sculpture Awards ceremony. We won first place in the school category for our ice hut.
Our school was the recipient of Three Stars from Quality Physical Education. Special thank you to Mr. Ryley Nadon and Ms. Terri-Lynn Scott for their awesome work with the physical education program.

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate Kate Lombard who won a medal in hockey this week.

Congratulations to Ava Doman, Gordon Staples and Gavin Staples who received medals in skiing.

Congratulations to Natalie Parsons who won a medal in the Dolphin Swim meet in Deer Lake last weekend.
Congratulations to our school choir who performed in the choirs 14 and under and choirs 12 and under. Congratulations to our students who participated in events at the Rotary Music Festival Last week. Many of our students placed in their categories. Congratulations to Claire Brake, Keely Brothers, Will Brothers,  Simon Boitsefski , Isaac Buckingham, Clare Coleman,  Alessandra LeBlanc, Sadie MacDonnell , Colin Spencer, and Gina Spencer.
 
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes performed in the Rotary Music Festival on Wednesday morning. Everyone did a great job! Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a lot of fun performing at the music festival. They are learning about healthy choices and testing apples. Green apples won the class taste test by five votes.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed the bus ride to the Arts and Culture Centre to sing in the festival on Tuesday. They are doing family trees in social studies. They are working on the letter “p” and “r” in language class.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is was surprised with a pizza party and cupcakes from one of the families this week. They really enjoyed it. They were very excited to perform at the music festival on Wednesday.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class really enjoyed participating in the music festival. They were proud to show all of their hard work. They learned a lot about taking care of their teeth on Wednesday afternoon with the public health nurse. It was a very interesting session. They are learning about structures and buildings in science.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed the class on dental care with our school nurse this week. They are starting some Easter writing. They are really enjoying their geometry unit in math.

Ms. Park’s grade two class enjoyed a fun science experiment in science. They put baking soda and vinegar in a bottle and blew up a balloon. This week in math they are estimating and measuring masses. They have also started an Easter booklet. This week the student of the week is Abigail.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class celebrated April Fool’s Day. In French it is La Journeé du Poisson d’avril (translated into April Fish). There are many fish in their classroom because the tradition is to put a fish on the back of a person without being caught.  Students are also writing about a trick parents are doing to their son. They mailed a box with something inside it – but what? A spider? A dog? A boat? A clown fish? Or nothing? Students are also reading stories about fish, fishing and aquariums. They made their own fish tank with nice fish inside.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class are working on projects for the heritage fair. The class is beginning to grow vegetables. Some of their bean plants are growing beans from where they flowered. Yum! The grade 4 students are busy working on their speeches for the elementary speak off.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class have been very busy preparing their speeches for the upcoming elementary speak off.  In social studies they are working on heritage fair projects. This year’s theme is “Growing up in ‘them days’”.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy preparing for the music festival performance they had on Thursday. In addition to this they have been working to prepare for next week’s drama festival in Pasadena. They will perform their play “Café Murder” next Thursday evening at 8 pm at Pasadena Academy.
 



Next week is Volunteer Appreciation week.

We are having a casual day on Wednesday in aid of the CCSTA townies for tuition.

Next Thursday our Junior High Students will participate in the Regional Drama Festival at Pasadena Academy. The show begins at 8 pm.
