On Monday we had a casual day in support of the Mexico team in the FIFA World Cup. Everyone wore, red, green and white.

Monday evening was our annual musical. This year we celebrated the past eight school musicals with a musical revue. It was a wonderful night! We would like to thank Mr. Graham for all his hard work in preparing the choirs and soloists and to all our families who supported the show.

On Tuesday the grades 1-3 French Immersion classes visited the Insectarium in Deer Lake. This was part of their study of butterflies.

On Wednesday Grades kindergarten to grade 6 had their end of year field trips. It was a beautiful day! The grades 1-3 students went to Prince Edward Park for fun and games and a picnic, while Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class went bowling at centre bowl and had a Ducks Unlimited Presentation in the afternoon. Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class spent the morning at Margaret Bowater Park followed by lunch on the city hall rooftop garden and a visit to the public library.

The Junior high students continued their exams this week. On Wednesday they wrote their social studies exam and today they are writing their math exam.

This is the last week for the grade 1 and 2 boys’ and girls’ basketball practices.

Today we are having a celebration in our outdoor classroom area. Our school is being presented the National FedEx award for environmental initiatives. This will begin at 2 pm. All are welcome!

We would like to thank Mrs. Deckert and the parents and grandparents who helped with the gardening, weeding and raking of our school yard. This was completed by Blair Ward, Steve MacDonnell, Terry Janes and Michael Walsh.

We are still accepting registrations for junior kindergarten and our full day kindergarten and English and French Immersion for September 2014. In addition, we are offering a grade 7 late French Immersion program in September. Please call the school for more information.
 

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate our track and field athletes who travelled to St. John’s last weekend for the annual Hersey’s Track and Field event in Mount Peal. We would like to thank Ms. Scott who travelled with the students to this competition. Juan Ramirez placed tenth place in Boys Standing Long Jump 13 and 14, fourth place in Boys Softball Throw 13 and under, and third place in Boys 100 Metre Dash 13 and 14; Jayden Lempriere placed 31st in Girls 100 Metre Dash 11 and 12 and 32nd in Girls Standing Long Jump 11 and 12; Telicia Young placed 27th in Girls 400 Metre Dash 11 and 12, 28th in Girls 800 Metre Dash 11 and 12, and 43rd in Girls Softball Throw 11 and 12. Congratulations to all our athletes!
Congratulations to Yazan Ismail on his green stripe in Tae kwon Do this week.

Congratulations to Rachel Griffin the Provincial Winner in the World’s Ocean Day poster contest for the kindergarten category.

We would like to thank Colemans, a loyal sponsor of the Kids eat Smart program, who donated $400 to our breakfast program this week. Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy for accepting the donation for our school.
 
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are busy doing outdoor science experiments and enjoying the sunshine. Mrs. English and Mrs. Vincent’s class would like to thank Keith Watton for the donation of a rocking chair for their story corner.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great class trip to the park. They love to have fun. Mme. Brake says the students all sang beautifully at the musical. The students would like to say thank you to Chase’s Uncle Joe for teaching them about fire safety. This week they celebrated three classroom birthdays. Happy birthday to Noah, Ewan and Ella!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was excited to celebrate the completion of their Little Green Thumbs program by serving a salad for the lunch. They all tried at least one vegetable. They all really enjoyed their trip to the park on Tuesday.

Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class were busy bees this week! The concert was a huge success and all the students did very well. Everyone enjoyed the trip to the park. They said goodbye to Mallory this week who left early for summer vacation. Have a great summer break, Mallory.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had an awesome trip to the Insectarium on Tuesday. The students learned a lot and had a nice picnic lunch outside. They were so lucky to have two field trips this week. It was so much fun!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is practicing their addition and subtraction facts up to 20. They had an awesome field trip on Wednesday.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is happy to announce that their baby chicks have hatched! So far nine baby chicks have hatched. They are all doing well and enjoying their many visitors. They all had an awesome time at Prince Edward Park on Wednesday.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class was very excited to visit the Newfoundland Insectarium in Deer Lake. They were very courageous and held the live insects in their hands. This week the school public health nurse, Denise Graham visited to teach them a little about first aid. This summer the students will be prepared to help if someone hurts themselves.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class is very excited that the year is coming to an end. This week they celebrated by going on a field trip to Centre Bowl. After bowling they walked to Luis Gees for lunch and then carried on to the Corner Brook Marsh for a wetlands workshop with Ducks Unlimited. They were very happy to enjoy the beautiful sunny day outdoors and learned a lot about the importance of our wetlands. It was a great way to celebrate a great year!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class finished their school yearbook print making project this week. Each student made a template and printed it 25 times to make a book for each student with all their pictures. It was a great project. The students would like to thank Mrs. Jane Bruce-Robertson for all her work with them this year! The students enjoyed their field trip on Wednesday. The best part was getting to have their lunch on the rooftop garden!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy studying and writing exams this week. The students will write their last final exam on Monday. This will be their science exam. The students are also busy planning the year end sports day for the whole school.

On Tuesday we will have our end of year sports day. It will be a casual day.
Wednesday is our end of year mass at All Hallows and final assembly. Students will be dismissed at noon.

Students Claire Brake, Brooklynn Colbourne, Kira McCarthy and Myles Young from Ms. Park's grade 2 class with the chick incubator from the Department of Agriculture. The students are anxiously awaiting the hatching of the baby chicks.

 

On Monday, Mme Ryan’s grade one French Immersion students released their butterflies. They set 30 butterflies free in our outdoor classroom. The whole school came to watch. Some of the butterflies were still in the area on Tuesday enjoying the milkweed that was planted for them.

We are happy to report that our school raised $950 for the Janeway telethon this year. Thank you to everyone who supported the different fundraisers.

Mrs. Hodder, Mrs. George and Mrs. Foley’s classes visited Rideout’s Farm in Cormack on Monday as part of their Little Green Thumbs program. The students were very excited to learn all about the farm and get to visit with many of the animals.

Many of our grade two students celebrated the sacrament of First Holy Communion this past Sunday at All Hallows. They would like to thank Mrs. George and Father Terry for the beautiful service and family gathering afterwards.  As well, several students in grade 3 received their sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Monday evening.

This week the grade 1 and 2 boys’ basketball team has started practicing and working on a variety of basketball skills. 

The junior high exams begin today with the language arts exam.

Our school has been very busy this week preparing for our annual musical. This year we are doing a musical revue of the favourite songs from our past musicals. The show will be on Monday night at 7 pm in our school gym.

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate Madison Noel who was the elementary winner in the ACAP art contest about invasive species in our oceans. Madison was presented with a new bike and a helmet. Runner up in the contest was Gina Spencer. In the primary category runners’ up were Clare Coleman and Caleb Rashleigh. Congratulations to everyone!

Rachel Griffin was the provincial winner in the World’s Ocean Day contest sponsored by the Department of Fishers and Aquaculture.
We would like to congratulate the winners of the Janeway Baskets. The winner of the reading and relaxation basket was Alex King, winner of the movie night basket was Keegan White, winner of the pets, pets, pets basket was Reegan Curtis, winner of the sweet tooth basket was Sadie MacDonnell, winner of the kitchen and gourmet basket was Renah Flynn, winner of the fun and games basket was Cameron Peddle, and winner of the crafty goodness basket was Owen Kelly. To celebrate the wonderful effort of our students there was also a draw for a free ice cream party for the class. The winner was Grace Brake Higgins in Ms. Parsons class.
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes have been busy writing all about their dads. The students brought in pictures of them and their dad to post on the wall. They are planning a special Father’s Day surprise for Sunday.
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great time watching he butterfly release on Monday. They made popsicles on Tuesday to further explore freezing and melting in science. They celebrated three classroom birthdays this week - Sam, Kaitlin and Kyah.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a great trip to Rideout’s farm as part of their little green thumbs project. They got to see many of the animals and learn about the dairy farm. They had a lot of fun. They are busy this week getting ready for our school musical next week.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is doing lot of activities for Father’s Day. They are also learning about the environment and how important composting is for our soil. They would like to wish a happy sixth birthday to Jacob Saunter who celebrated on Sunday.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is was both sad and excited to release their butterflies on Monday. They really enjoyed watching them transform. They are creating beautiful sea creatures with tissue paper to celebrate World Ocean Day. They are looking forward to finishing their Father’s Day surprise today.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a fantastic time at Rideout’s Farm on Monday. The best part was seeing a one day old calf and some three week old kittens. They are working hard on their Father’s Day surprises. They would like to wish all their dad’s a great day on Sunday!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about 3-D shapes in math. They are also making shapely critters in art. The student of the week is Myles! They would like to congratulate Abigail Woodford, Coen Mackey, Cole Boyd-Martyn, Gavin Staples, Gordon Staples, Jenna Cammie, Jorja Perrett, Keira Clarke, Kira McCarthy, Maxwell Antle, Sadie MacDonnell and Will Brothers on celebrating their First Holy Communion on Sunday!

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class were very busy this week. The grade two students made surprises for their dads. The grade three students were very busy writing their math CRT exams this week. They all did their very best. They would like to congratulate Natalie Parsons on her First Holy Communion on Sunday!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class really enjoyed see the calf barn at Rideout’s farm in Cormac. The grade 3’s had their math CRTs this week. Everyone did an awesome job. The students are looking forward to the end of school year activities. They would like to congratulate Jacob Bursey, Clare Coleman, Heather Cooper, Aria Kazerouni,  and Colin Spencer on their first reconciliation on Monday evening.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are looking forward to the end of the school year. They are finishing up their units in each subject. The grade 5 students finished their book “Ticket to Curlew”. They really enjoyed learning about the early settlers in Alberta. The grade 6 students wrote their grade 6 math CRTs this week. .

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class are organizing the year end sports day for the whole school. They have also been busy painting scenes for the musical.
 


Our school musical will be performed this Monday evening in the school gym at 7 pm. The show will feature songs from past musicals the school has performed.

School will close for summer vacation on Wednesday, June 25th at noon. There will be a morning Mass at All Hallows followed by a school closing assembly and report card distribution.

Last Friday afternoon we had a spectacular annual science fair. There were a lot of great projects. We would like to thank our judges Mr. Hancock, Mr. Mark Fitzpatrick and Mr. Cec Lake.

This week is Provincial Environment Week. All of our classes participated in activities focusing on helping and preserving our environment. Mrs. King and Mrs. McCarthy travelled to St. John’s to receive the Provincial Environmental Award for the category of youth, school or group. Way to go, IHMS.

On Monday night we had an in school art show. There was lots of beautiful artwork on display. On Monday night we also began a silent auction for a lithograph of Gerald Squire’s portrait called “Ash-Wednesday – A Portrait of Al Pittman”. The piece is on display in our main entrance and bidding ballots are available at the main office. The portrait is valued at $1,050. The auction will continue until the last day of school on June 25th.

The photographer visited our school on Monday and Tuesday to take class and group photos for the yearbook. The yearbook order forms went home on Tuesday. The cost of the yearbook is  $21.

On Tuesday our grades 3-9 students participated in the Hersey Track and Field events. Everyone was outside participating in running and jumping events. It was a lot of fun. Thank you to Mr. Ryley Nadon, Mr. Drew Nadon, and Mrs. Foley for organizing this event.

The kindergarten graduation was Thursday evening. The children performed songs and poems for their parents.

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate our winners in the annual science fair on Friday afternoon. The winners were Ana Brake, William Bruce Robertson, Max Chrappa, Jayden Lempriere, Ryan Murphy, Lucas Neville, Madison Noel, Jack Ryan, Colin Spencer, and Maria Reynolds.

Congratulations to Reegan Curtis and Leah Lainey who won ribbons for Can Skate 1 and 2 for balance, agility and control.

Congratulations to Natalie Caines who won ribbons for Can Skate 5 for balance, agility and control.

Lucas Kennedy broke a board with his foot in Tae Kwon Do!

Congratulations to Abigail Tiller who cut off her hair to donate to Locks of Love for cancer patients.
 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes would like to thank Gordon and Judy Penney for the pizza, garlic fingers and juice on Thursday, as well as Jehane White for cupcakes and Sandie Penney and Dania Obeid for the ice cream for all the classes. The students were so excited to see their art work on display at the art show. They even displayed special trees with recycled crafts. They have started doing their Father’s Day crafts.
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about the water cycle in science class. But even more exciting that that…they all graduated kindergarten on Thursday evening! It was a beautiful celebration. Mme Brake is so proud of them.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was happy to show their families their artwork at the annual art show on Monday night. They were very excited about their graduation and are looking forward to grade one next year.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class had so much fun at their kindergarten graduation on Thursday. They are very much looking forward to grade one next year.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is very excited to see that some of their caterpillars have emerged from their cocoons as beautiful butterflies. They will be planting their peas out in the greenhouse this week.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed the art show on Monday night. They are excited to see that the butterflies in Mme. Ryan’s class that she let them name are beginning to emerge from their cocoons. They are learning about animals in science. They really enjoyed doing math in the outdoor classroom this week.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making three dimensional structures and an underwater scene in art class. They are anxiously awaiting the hatching of their baby chicks. They would like to thank Sabrina Brock from the Department of Agriculture for educating and preparing their chick incubator. While they are waiting, they are learning about the embryology of a chick. They are also researching animals of Australia for their thematic unit. Coen is the student of the week!

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class read a book called “Aboie, Georges! (Bark, George!). It’s about a little dog who does not bark like other dogs. He uses noises like pigs, cows, cats and ducks. During the week, students rewrote the book with the other sounds that George can do.  It was a lot of fun for all!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class enjoyed a salad made with salad greens and beans from their classroom garden. With the warmer weather they will soon be planting some milkweed seedlings out in the school garden for the monarch butterflies to enjoy. On Thursday they went to the Corner Brook marsh on a field trip to learn about erosion.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class really enjoyed painting fun games out on the sidewalk last week. They hope all the students are enjoying the hopscotch, four square and calculator games. The grade five students are learning about the history of transportation in language arts and the grade 6 students are finishing off their short stories.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had some wonderful pieces of artwork in the art show on Monday. They really enjoyed the track and field meet on Tuesday. It gave them an opportunity to challenge each other.
 



First Holy Communion will be at All HallowsParish on Sunday at 10:30 am. A reception will follow in the school gym.

First reconciliation is on Monday evening at 6:30 pm at All Hallows Parish.
