On Monday, Ms. Park’s class lit the third candle on the Advent wreath. The candle this week represents Joy.  

Grade six student, Kori-Lee Noel, was our school representative for the RNC Christmas Food Drive. Kori visited locations around the city on Monday to pick up food bank donations with the RNC.

The stocking for the seniors, fire fighters’ toy drive and food bank collections ended this week. Thank you to our families for your support of these fundraisers.

We would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for sponsoring a school skating party on Tuesday on both ice surfaces and for providing a snack for all the students. Everyone had a great time at the Pepsi Centre. Thank you to the parents who came to the skating party.

Last Saturday, Mrs. McCarthy’s class hosted the annual Tree Trimming Family Social. It was a lot of fun! Thank you to Mr. Graham for playing piano for the sing-a-long and to Mr. Bryan McCarthy for providing the music for the event.

We are once again having an Apple-A -Day fundraiser. The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program. Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The five days of draws will begin in January 11 and conclude on January 15th. Prizes include: a 16GB IPod touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB  IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad Air and Apple TV, and an 11inch MacBook Air 2.

 
Congratulations to Jennifer Keough who won $250 last week at “Chase the Ace”. Thank you to Emma Peckford, Bailey Jordan-Neil and Jesse Hackett for hosting the open mic ngiht. Our school is proud to partner with the SPCA in a fundraiser called “Chase the Ace”. There will be no Chase the Ace this week. It will resume after Christmas.



Congratulations to our winners in the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Poster and Essay Contest. In the junior essay contest Jenna Cammie received first place and Trinity Rouse received second place; in the intermediate essay contest Makenzy Bishop received first place and Cameron Peddle received third place; in the senior essay contest Maria Dias received second place and Maria Reynolds received third place; in the intermediate colour poster contest Paige Walsh received second place and Rebekah Calbert received third place.; in the senior colour poster contest Thiago Pereira received third place; and in the senior black and white poster Maria Reynolds received third place.

Congratulations to Nikola Verbiski who received her first Holy Communion last Friday morning during the school mass at All Hallows Church.

Congratulations to Daniel Osmond and Bryant Osmond who received medals at a hockey tournament last weekend.

Congratulations to Israela Ngania who received her yellow stripe belt in Tae Kwon Do last week.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are getting very excited for Santa and Christmas holidays. This week all the students received a letter from Santa. Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
  

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great time on Tuesday at the skating party hosted by the Knights of Columbus. On Thursday they were cozy in their pyjamas. They are excited for their Christmas party today. Joyeux Noël!

   

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was very excited to take a bus ride to the Pepsi Centre for ice skating on Tuesday. They enjoyed the pancake breakfast  and pyjama day on Thursday.

  

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had a great time at the skating party this week. The students made cards for the Knights of Columbus as a thank you for being so generous and hosting the party and snacks.

  

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a fun week doing special Christmas crafts and making cards for their families. They are excited about the variety show and Christmas party later today. They would like to wish all our readers a wonderful Christmas.

  

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing a lot of Christmas writing in language arts. In science they are learning about mixing liquids and solids and are experimenting with making Christmas cookies! They would like to wish a Merry Christmas to all their friends and family.

  

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is busy this week doing Christmas activities in all subjects. The class is looking forward to the Christmas vacation.

   

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class are applying for jobs at the North Pole. Some of the jobs they are applying for include: travel expert, reindeer trainer and cookie tester. They wish everyone a wonderful Christmas!

  

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class have been learning about the layers of soil in science class. The students had a lot of fun doing Christmas word activities in language arts. The grade four students made funny Christmas “Mad Libs”.

  

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class welcomed Jack Richardson, a grade six student, to their class this week. The grade five students enjoyed reading their short stories to the grade one students this week. They had a lot of fun writing and illustrating stories for their young audience. The students are excited about the variety show today and their class party.

      
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class had a fun afternoon on Wednesday learning about mummering and visiting classrooms dressed in costume. The class is finishing off their units this week and getting ready for Christmas vacation.

COMING UP...

School closes for junior kindergarten on December 23 at 5 pm.
 
School will re-open for all students on January 4, 2016.

Santa Claus visited our school on Monday for class photos and family photos. Everyone enjoyed seeing him during this busy time of year.

Mme. Ryan and Mme. O’Dells’ classes lit the second candle on the Advent wreath this week in chapel.

  

On Monday, our school hosted the IHMS Scripps Spelling Bee. We had thirteen students participate in the bee representing grades four to seven.  In grade four Isabelle Mercier, Caleb Rashleigh, and Reyd Ward; in grade five Simon Boitsefskii, Clare Coleman, Carly Johannesen, Aria Kazerouni, Alessandra LeBlanc, and Colin Spencer;  in grade six Isaac Buckingham and Aaron White; and in grade seven Myles Calbert and William Bennett represented their classes. The overall winner was Isaac Buckingham with runner- up Isabelle Mercier. Both students are invited to attend the Telegram Scripps Spelling Bee in St. John’s to be held in February.

  

On Tuesday, Father Chris celebrated a mass with the grades seven to level two students in our school chapel. In the afternoon, Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group held a celebration for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at All Hallows Church with kindergarten to grade six students. It was a quiet time for prayer and song to celebrate Mary.

  

Last night we held our annual Christmas concert. The theme for this year was “The Bells of Christmas”. Thank you to Mr. Graham, Ms. Lewis, Mr. Reynolds and all of our teachers and students for all of their hard work in preparing the beautiful concert.

  

Congratulations to the grade six boys’ basketball team who played in the Tiny Titans Tournament last weekend. They finished first in their division, winning all four games, but lost the battle in the semi-finals. Thank you to their coaches Mr. Ryley, Mr. Drew, Ms. Bishop and Ms. Wamboldt.

  

Last Sunday was our third week of Chase the Ace. This fundraiser is in conjunction with the SPCA. Mr. Greg Johannesen won $250. This event featured a “Dog Show and More Show”. It was a wonderful success with more than 25 pets taking part. Thank you to our two judges for this event. Ms. Angela Boyd-Martyn, owner of the Animal Health Care Centre judged this event along with French Immersion teacher, Heather Moss.  Ms. Jessica Couture won the Dog Show and More Show door prize of a $50 gift certificate from the Humber Valley Vet Clinic. We would also like to thank the Animal Health Care Centre for the many prizes they donated.

  

We will continue to “Chase the Ace” this Sunday night from 6:30-8:30 pm. Tickets are 3 for $5. In conjunction with this project, we are hosting an open mic night featuring Emma Peckford and friends. Student admission is $2 and adult admission is $5. There will be prizes awarded.

  

The chamber choir, accompanied by Mr. Graham, is singing this afternoon at the Seniors’ Complex Bungalows.

  

The Student Leadership Council has finished their collection for Stocking for Seniors. They are still collecting items for the Fire Fighters’ Toy Drive and the Food Bank Christmas Food Drive. The deadline for these items is Monday

 



Congratulations to Cole Boyd-Martyn who won gold medal at the Tae Kwon Do Tournament last weekend.

Congratulations to our figure skaters, Jenna Cammie, Kaitlyn Coade, Rebecca Janes, Rotém Phillips-Grobbelaar, and Ella Rashleigh, who participated in a competition this past week.

Congratulations to Natalie Parsons who participated in the 2015 Body Quest Heats and Finals Invitational that took place in St. John’s last weekend. Natalie participated in five separate categories for under swimmers 12.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes really enjoyed singing in the Christmas concert. They were all so happy to see Santa on Monday. This week they are making Christmas crafts and learning about the true meaning of Christmas.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class are working on their reindeer pastels in art. They were excited to sing “Gentil Père Noël” in the Christmas concert for their family on Thursday night.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a great time at the Christmas concert. The students are doing more, fewer and the same as in math. They are also making Christmas crafts. They transplanted some of their seedlings from the Little Green Thumbs Program.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been working on addition and subtraction in math. They have been exploring with manipulatives and games.  They have been talking about the sense of touch.  The students are thinking about Christmas and the difference between needs and wants.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed their Christmas concert last night. They are doing subtraction stories in math this week and made some lovely Christmas crafts. The star of the week is Logan.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing Christmas crafts this week. They are doing a fun little writing activity called “If Santa was stuck in my chimney...”. The class enjoyed taking part in the Christmas concert last night.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is working on the rough drafts for their original Clifford stories. They are working on addition and subtraction in math. They were very excited to showcase their hard work on Thursday night at the concert.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is writing twelve days of Christmas notes to each other. The class will share their notes before Christmas vacation.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class finished their units on addition and subtraction. They are writing Christmas stories and can’t wait to share them with each other. The grade four students have finished their read aloud book “To the Top of Everest” and are discussing the dreams they have for their future.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a lot of fun in language class this week reviewing the parts of speech with “Mad Libs” activities. The stories were so funny they almost fell out of their seats. The students are looking forward to all the fun activities leading up to Christmas vacation. They boys played in the Tiny Titans Tournament last weekend. The team won their first four games and lost in the semi-finals.  The class is busy planning the Tree Trimming social taking place this Saturday.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class was busy this week preparing for the Christmas concert. The grades seven to nine students are busy working on novel studies in language arts. The English 1201 and 2201 students are focusing on different types of media and visuals.

COMING UP...

The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a skating party on December 15^th.

Our school will host a pancake breakfast and pyjama day on December 17^th.

School closes for kindergarten to level two on December 18^th at 2:50 pm with after school program running until 5 pm.

Our students from kindergarten to level two were off school on Monday for a teacher professional development day. The teachers took part in sessions on Mindfulness with Dr. Kate Laferty, Dr. Erin Smallwood, Family Physicians with Western Health; and Dr. Michael Newton, Professor with Memorial University, Grenfell Campus.  In the afternoon teachers explored educational applications for Ipad with Mme. Foley and took part in departmental meetings.

On Tuesday, Mrs. George’s grade one class lit the first candle on the Advent Wreath to begin our season of Advent. Also, on Tuesday, in observance of a day of remembrance for veterans, Simon Boitsefski sang “O’Canada” in our two official languages.

Congratulations to our Intermediate Skills Challenge Team on a great performance last weekend! We would like to thank all the community and businesses that supported our team and made donations of their money, time and talents. We would like to thank Mr. Jason King, Chief Administrative Officer of Western Regional Waste Management, who met with our robotics team to discuss their project and to Mr. Scott Reynolds who worked with our graphic design team.

Congratulations to our LEGO Robotics team consisting of Makenzy Bishop, Myles Calbert, Rebekah Calbert, Jose Garcia, Max Chrappa, Ryan Bennett, Cole Dumaresque, Emily Murley, Kori Noel, and Ryan Miller who won third place in the Trash Trek Project category.

Congratulations to our LEGO Robotics Demonstration team consisting of Maria Luisa Dias, Maria Reynolds, Genesio DeLima, Lucas Lisboa, Emily O’Bryan, Nico Hermillio, Maria Jessica DeAlmeida, Maria Roseli DeLima, Thiago Pereira who received  the award “Against All Odds” which was for the team who had the greatest challenge in attending the competition.

Congratulations to Anna MacKenzie and Madison Noel who won gold medals in the Wind Turbine Challenge.

Last Sunday was our second week of Chase the Ace. This fundraiser is in conjunction with the SPCA. Mrs. Marjorie Deckert won $250. Thank you to Angela Brown, Lisa and Alma Clarke for providing the entertainment for this event. We will continue to “Chase the Ace” this Sunday night from 6:30-8:30 pm. Tickets are 3 for $5. This event will feature a “Dog Show and More Show”. Pet registration begins at 6 pm with a cost of $5 per pet.

 

The Student Leadership Council is collecting items for Stockings for Seniors, the Fire Fighter’s Toy Drive and the Food Bank Christmas Food Drive..  



Congratulations to Colin Spencer who received a gold medal in the Royal Conservatory Level 2 for 2014-2015. Colin travelled to Nova Scotia last week to receive his award.

Congratulations to Caleb Rashleigh’s team who won medals in the Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Atom House League Hockey Tournament in Corner Brook over the weekend.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are doing some Christmas crafts and decorating the classroom. All the children are excited and looking forward to the Christmas concert. One of the students had a birthday party over the weekend where the parents donated money to the Ronald MacDonald house in lieu of presents. The total raised was $500.00.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning new sight words for December. They are learning the letter “t” in language and about the numbers that come before and after in math. They have an elf visiting their classroom. They named their elf “Neige”. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about more, fewer and same in math. In language arts they are working on the letter “x”.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is practicing the song “O Come Divine Messiah” in French to prepare for the lighting of the third Advent candle. The class is looking forward to the skating party on December 15^th. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class was very excited to light the first candle on the Advent wreath on Monday. This week they are writing friendly letters to Santa. They read the story stone soup, a beautiful story about cooperation and trust. They made their own stone soup yesterday. It was delicious!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is conducting mini research on a Canadian animal in language arts. They are starting Christmas crafts this week. They are looking forward to visiting and giving their Christmas cards to seniors at the Long Term Care Centre today!

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has been busy practicing for the Christmas concert and making props. They are doing a lot of drills to learn addition and subtraction facts. They are learning about place value and the relationship between addition and subtraction. They are getting very excited for Christmas!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class are doing some Christmas writing activities in French. They will be choosing their own elf names to base their writing on! Congratulations to grade four students, Caleb Rashleigh and Isabelle Mercier, and grade five students, Simon Boitsefksi and Carly Johannesen, who were chosen for the school Scripps Spelling Bee next week.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is going to the Long Term Care Centre today to deliver Christmas cards with Ms. Park’s grade two class. They are very excited to deliver their handmade cards. The grade three and four students have started subtraction in Math. The class would like to congratulate Reyd Ward and Natalie Parsons who were chosen for the school Scipps Spelling Bee next Monday afternoon.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class would like to congratulate Isaac Buckingham, Clare Coleman, Aria Kazerouni , Arabella LeBlanc, Colin Spencer, and Aaron White and who were chosen for the school Scipps Spelling Bee on Monday.  The grade six students are continuing their reading of the novel “Raven Quest”. It is very suspenseful! The students are working on making and checking predictions.

 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class had an excellent trip to St. John’s for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The students participated in a workshop at the MUN Mineral Lab, toured the Basilica, visited Signal Hill, rock climbed at Axtion and went swimming at the MUN Aqua Arena.

The IHMS Scripps Spelling Bee is being held on Monday at 1:00 pm for selected students in grades four to eight. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.

The IHMS annual Christmas concert “The Bells of Christmas” is on December 10^th at 7 pm..
