Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had a very exciting Earth Day on Wednesday. The students made bird feeders by up-cycling old milk cartons. This was a great way to repurpose an item that would otherwise end up in a landfill. The class has been extra busy in the greenhouse too. They prepared another bed for lettuce and planted Romaine. Mmm! They also started some zucchini in pots and will be bringing them home when they are ready. This has been an exciting week of learning about plants and the environment.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is finished reading the book Flat Stanley: His Original Adventure. They made their own Stanley and will send them all over the world to their families and friends. The class really enjoyed celebrating Earth Day. They planted some flowers and did some recycled art. Congratulations to Tyler McCarthy who was a winner in the Corner Brook Plaza Easter colouring contest.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has been busy planting and will continue for Earth Day. This week they are writing in their journals, and will be recording and measuring their plants’ growth as part of their math unit on measuring. We hope that everyone celebrates each day as Earth Day!

The students were also busy painting the recycling box designed and built by Lucas’s dad, Warren Neville. The box is located in our main lobby.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class really enjoyed the school heritage fair on Tuesday. There were a lot of interesting projects displayed. The class learned about different types of spiders this week. Did you know that a spider’s brain is in its stomach? The grade six students are looking forward to the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and the Quebec City trip in the beginning of May.  The class is still collecting plastic bottle caps. They would like to thank Scotia Recycling Depot for collecting bottle caps for their recycled art project.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy preparing for the underwater robotics competition coming up next weekend as well as the Let’s Talk Science Challenge. On Wednesday the group visited the Greenwood Inn and Suites pool to test their underwater robot. The robot has propellers on both sides and a neutral buoyancy device to keep it in place in the water. The robot is also equipped with a camera that allows the driver to direct the robot to complete missions. The class would like to thank Mr. Warren Neville who helped with the electrical set-up for the robot. The class is also participating in their in class speak off today. The annual speak off will take place on Tuesday evening.
