Tomorrow our school is hosting the Western Region Invitational Robotics Competition. We are hosting schools in the Western Region to learn about First Lego League Robotics and compete in team work and robot challenges.

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success again this year. We sold $3,390.00 in books. This will bring new books into our classrooms. Thank you to all of our school families for their support. Thank you also to Mrs. George and her team of teachers for helping with the fair.

Last Friday evening we had Clare Coleman, Carly Johannesen, Aria Kazerouni, Arabella LeBlanc, Alessandra LeBlanc, and Colin Spencer represent our school at the fourth annual AgriFoods and Garden Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all of our spellers! Aria placed second overall and Arabella placed third.

Our school hosted a “Make the Cut” fundraiser on Sunday for the Canadian Cancer Society. Grade one student, Meteghan Kane, and level one student, Maria Jessica De Almeida, collected donations and cut off their hair to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society. Mallory Chambers was unable to attend on Sunday, but donated her hair to Ms. Tarragh Shannahan in chapel on Monday morning.

This week we celebrated Waste Reduction Week. The week started with a blue theme day for water conservation and the launch of the Recycle My Cell Campaign. On Tuesday we went paper free, Wednesday we brought litterless lunches, on Thursday we upcycled unwanted items, and today we are conserving water.

Our cross country running team participated in the Regional Cross Country Running race in Stephenville on Wednesday afternoon.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School will be collecting used and broken cell phones until November 19. Please help us by bringing in your used or broken cell phones or calling the school to make your donation.

The Student Leadership Council is busy preparing a spooky haunted house for Halloween next week. Don’t forget to wear your costumes to school. We will be hosting our annual Halloween costume parade.

Congratulations to Jemma Butler, Keira Clarke, Ethan Lahey and Emily Hindy who won the candy guessing game at the book fair. Congratulations to Lauren Green who was the closest guess for the number of pages contest at the book fair. Congratulations to Claire Patey who won the $25 family door prize and to her class who also won $25!

Congratulations to Carter Bromley who won third place in the grade four boys race hosted by St. Gerard’s Elementary School last week. Our team was represented at the race by 26 runners. Good work everyone!

Congratulations to Rebeakah Calbert who won a silver medal in a provincial orienteering, map and compass competition with the Royal Canadian Army Cadets last weekend in St. John’s.

Congratulations to grade eight students, Madison Noel and Anna MacKenzie who won first prize for their pumpkin in the junior high category at the AgriFoods and Garden Show on Sunday.

CLASS NEWS


The junior kindergarten classes are talking about Halloween. The children are getting very excited to celebrate with their friends. They are enjoying talking about ghosts, bats, pumpkins, and jack o’lanterns. They cannot wait until next week!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class celebrated les fêtes de bleu et vert this week. They made haunted houses out of milk and juice cartons for the upcycling day on Thursday. They were very pleased and proud to lead in chapel this week for the very first time.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is starting a new unit in science on plants. The students are working on the letter “e” and making Halloween crafts this week.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning to represent numbers that are larger than ten. They are working on a new Halloween song and doing a lot of activities based on the song. They are going to make monsters using recycled cereal boxes.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing Halloween alliteration and illustrating their pieces. They really enjoyed their guided imagery in religion where they imaged they were back in Israel during Jesus’ time. The star of the week is Heidi.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making spooky silhouettes in art for Halloween. They are learning how to count money in math. They are also learning what happens to water in the air. For a fun activity they are making clouds.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class continued their unit in social studies talking about the past and how it has affected our future. They realize that there are many people in our past that have influenced our lives in a positive way.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is working on spooky Halloween themes in art. They are revising stories in French and writing acrostic poems with adjectives. The grade four students teamed up with the grade four English class for a fun science experiment.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class had a great time at the AgriFoods and Garden Show last. The students are working on Halloween themed writing. The class welcomed Ms. Susanna Appelin  who is working with the class through an Access partnership with Grenfell College.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class have been working on homonyms in language arts class. The grade five students are finishing off biographies on Canadian and international heroes. The grade six students are busy writing descriptive paragraphs for Halloween. In health, the grade five students are writing comics about the respiratory system. The grade six students are excited to start work on their First Lego League Robotics missions for the Intermediate Skills Challenge.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class had an excellent field trip to the Chrappa’s property on Friday. The students picked apples from the orchard and enjoyed a marshmallow and wiener roast. The students have been busy this week preparing for the Western Region Invitational Robotics Competition we are hosting tomorrow.

The grade six to level 2 students will be having a leaf raking fundraiser on Saturday, November 7 (weather permitting). Please call the office to book your lawn today.

On Friday, we held our annual Thanksgiving Day dinner. Our meal was prepared by the Quality Inn and served by parent volunteers. Thank you for the delicious feast. The Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten choir sang “Hello” and “The Thanksgiving Song”. We welcomed members of the community, clergy and volunteers to our dinner.
Our Student Leadership Council organized a food drive for the Corner Brook Food Bank. Thank you to the many families that donated.
On Wednesday, our school hosted our fall Scholastic Book Fair Family Event. Thank you to Mrs. George, our teacher volunteers and Mr. Bryan McCarthy for giving their time to this event.
This year our annual vegetable fundraiser was a huge success. Our families sold 740 bags of vegetables! Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser.
Today our students in grades three to six are attending the Agrifoods and Garden Show at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. The Agrifoods and Garden Show also sponsored a pumpkin decorating contest. Our classes each decorated pumpkins for the contest. The pumpkins are now on display at the show!
We are collecting children’s winter clothing for the Humber Rotary. Clothing donations are being accepted until October 15.
 



Congratulations to Clare Coleman, Carly Johannesen, Aria Kazerouni, Alessandra LeBlanc, and Colin Spencer who were chosen to represent our school at the Agrifoods and Garden Show Agriculture Spelling Bee at the Corner Brook Civic Centre tonight. Arabella LeBlanc is also attending as an alternate speller.
 
Congratulations to our cross country runners who participated in a running meet at C.C. Louglin School last Wednesday. Congratulations to the members of the running team who participated. In the grade four boys’ race we had Carter Bromley, Jacob Blackwood, Noah Evans, Garbiel Rowsell, Matthew Kemp, Caleb Rashleigh, Cole Boyd-Martyn, and Ty Dumaresque. In the grade four girls’ race we had Molly George, Jemma Butler, Brooke Watton, Kate Murphy, Candace Johannesen, Katerine Noel, Alyssa Power, Charlotte Mercier, Jaidyn Prosper, Isabelle Mercier, Trinity Rouse, Reyd Ward and Natalie Parsons.  In the grade five races we had Clare Coleman, Carly Johannesen, Aria Kazerouni, and Jacob Bursey. In the grade six race we had Cole Dumaresque.
 

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about fall. They went on a nature walk around the school, and made crafts with their findings. The children are enjoying the fall colours.
Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a very busy week. The students really enjoyed the delicious Thanksgiving meal last week. One of their favourite activities this week was decorating the pumpkins!
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had lots of fun painting and decorating pumpkins this week. They are working on the letter “L” in language arts. The students enjoyed visiting the book fair this week!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing some spooky Halloween writing this week. They are learning about natural features and their attributes in social studies. Their star of the week is Hala.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class removed the old tomato plants that were no longer producing tomatoes. The class have composted the old plants. The lettuce they planted is really sprouting! This week they had fun decorating the pumpkins that were donated from the AgriFoods and Garden Show. They also learned how to represent numbers with a fun math game.
Ms. Park’s grade two English class is making bird feeders this week in science. They are learning odd and even numbers in math and are going to make an “odd” and “’even” spooky street to go with it.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class have been patiently observing their plants growing in the greenhouse. The class really enjoyed decorating the pumpkins from the AgriFoods and Garden Show.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is really looking forward to the Agrifoods and Garden Show fair today! The grade four students have been busy learning about the different political parties in Canada. They all cast their vote for their Member of Parliament on Thursday afternoon.  They can’t wait to see who wins!
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, and five French Immersion class is looking forward to the Agrifoods and Garden Show today at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. They are learning about the fall leaves and tree identification in science. The grade four and five students loved learning about the upcoming Federal Election as part of the Student Vote Program.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is looking forward to the Agrifoods and Garden Show today. Last week the grade five students really dug the archaeology dig set up in the school yard for social studies class. They had to use maps and grids to locate buried treasure outside just like real archaeologists. The grade six students wrote essays about good governance for Provincial Good Governance Week. The students were excited to have a say in the Student Vote Program. They are encouraging everyone to get out and vote on October 19.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class have been busy this week. On Tuesday, the 1201 English students had their first quiz on their novel study for “The Giver”. On Wednesday, the whole class took part in decorating Halloween Pumpkins. For the Brazilian students, this will be their first celebration of Halloween. The class has been buzzing all week about the election platforms for the Federal Election next week.

IHMS 2015 Thanksgiving Food Drive Donation


 
Students and staff at Immaculate Heart of Mary School collected food items to donate to the local Food Bank as part of their annual Thanksgiving Day celebration. Grade five students, Arabella LeBlanc, Colin Spencer, Aria Kazerouni, Clare Coleman, Emily Payne and Alessandra LeBlanc show some of the items collected for the food bank.

Today we are enjoying our annual Thanksgiving Day dinner as a school family. Thank you to The Quality Inn for preparing our meal today. In addition to dinner, some of our classes are performing a song. The Student Leadership Council is also making a special presentation to Mrs. Agnes McCarthy of the Salvation Army Food Bank.

On Wednesday, Ms. Sandra Burden from the Kids Eat Smart Program visited our school to celebrate Kids Eat Smart Week and Provincial Smoothie Day. Our students and staff enjoyed fruit smoothies in the breakfast program before heading to class.  In the afternoon, we celebrated the annual Terry Fox Walk to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Our breakfast program welcomes Ms. Kim Youden as a volunteer this week.

Last Friday we held our annual Medical Theme Day in aid of the Western Memorial Hospital Foundation Radiothon. We raised $800.25 as of Friday, with more donations coming in this past week. Our donation was matched by TD Canada Trust to make is $1600.50! This week our total raised was $949.25. Some of our students visited the radio station to make the presentation and speak on the radio about our theme day. Marcus Gallant, Aria Kazerouni, Jayden Lempriere, Anna MacKenzie, Madison Noel and Jose Garcia made the official presentation on behalf of our school.

Our Apple A Day Fundraiser is underway for 2016. Our school is in the process of planning the fundraiser and acquiring the prizes for this exciting draw. The fundraiser will be in aid of our music program.

Student Leadership Council Elections took place this week. Our Student Leadership Council Prime Minister is Anna MacKenzie, Deputy Prime Minister is Madison Noel, Secretary is Cameron Peddle, Primary Representative is Rebekah Calbert. Voting for classroom representatives will take place in the next few days. Congratulations to all the candidates in the election.

The girls’ grade seven to level two basketball team and the boys’ grade seven basketball teams began practicing this week.

Congratulations to our runners who competed at the J.J. Curling Running Meet on Monday. Students representing our school included: Carter Bromley, Jacob Blackwood, Cole Boyd-Martyn, Jacob Bursey, Clare Coleman, Ty Dumaresque, Cole Dumaresque, Molly George, Carly Johannesen, Candace Johannesen, Matthew Kemp,  Charlotte Mercier, Isabelle Mercier, Kate Murphy,  Katherine Noel, Natalie Parsons, Jaidyn Prosper, Caleb Rashleigh, Reyd Ward, and Brooke Watton.

Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy who ran the Humber Valley Half Marathon last Sunday.
CLASS NEWS


The junior kindergarten classes are talking about fire safety and thanksgiving. Everyone is really excited about the turkey dinner today. Thank you, Quality Inn, for the great meal. The class welcomes Gracie Colbourne to the junior kindergarten program.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed two colour celebration days this week. Monday was le jour d'orange and Wednesday was le jour de burn et noir! They are having a blast learning their French colours. On Wednesday they participated in the Terry Fox walk. They made turkeys this week, too! But don't get the wrong idea! Les dindes ne sont pas pour le dîner! They are wishing everyone a joyeux action de grâces this weekend!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about fire safety for fire prevention week. They have also been talking about the pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. The students are enjoying their turkey dinner today.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is working on Thanksgiving activities. They did a writing activity about the things they are thankful for. They are also making turkeys in art class. The students are looking forward to the long weekend.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about all the things they are thankful for this week. They are really enjoying all the funny turkey books in their classroom library. The star of the week is Hala. They would like to wish Uriah a very happy 6th birthday, and all the readers a happy thanksgiving. Gobble, gobble!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing many activities to celebrate Thanksgiving. They are writing a book of instructions on how to cook a turkey as a class. It is a cute and funny book. They are also busy writing about things they are thankful for in their lives. They are also having fun doing Thanksgiving math games and practicing their numbers to 100.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class made salsa from their green house tomatoes, onion and garlic! It was delicious. This week they finished their math unit on patterns and will begin looking for their patterns in numbers. They wish everyone a great Thanksgiving week end!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class had a great week. The students loved the Terry Fox walk on Wednesday. The grade five students had an archaeology dig in the school yard as part of their science class. The grade three students are learning about leaves and are looking forward to their ArtSmart project with the English grade three students and local artist, Jane Reagh.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is doing some Thanksgiving writing this week. They are starting a new unit in math on place value.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a lot of fun working on writing their name in 3D in art class. The grade five students are writing biographies this week, while the grade six students are writing essays about  good governance. The students are excited to be starting basketball practice this week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class had an excellent time on Tuesday on their field trip to Bonne Bay Pond. The level one and two students are busy this week working on their novel studies on “The Giver” and “Night”. The students are gearing up to begin working on their projects for the Intermediate Skills Challenge in St. John’s at the end of November.


COMING UP...
School will be closed on Monday, October 12, in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Our Scholastic Book Fair Family Night is October 14 from 6:30-8:30 pm in the school cafeteria.

Our school is hosting a Western Regional Robotics Competition on October 24th for schools located in the Western Region of Newfoundland and Labrador. Contact the school office if you would like more information.
