Operation Christmas Child officially ended
this week. Thank you to everyone who donated items for this cause. The grade one English and grade one French
Immersion classes are busy packing the boxes. They will give us a grand total
next week.
Report Cards went home Wednesday and parent
teacher interviews were held from seven to eight thirty pm.
Grade six students, Emily Murley and Isaac
Buckingham, presented their speeches at the annual YMCA Peace Week Speak off on
Thursday evening. Both students did very well.
Last week the grade four English and French
Immersion students went on a field Trip to Port Aux Port mine as part of their
science curriculum. The students toured the mine, learned about mine safety and
identified some fossils!
We are once again having an Apple-A -Day
fundraiser. The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program.
Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The five days of draws will begin in
January 11 and conclude on January 15th. Prizes include: a 16GB IPod
touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad
Air and Apple TV, and an 11inch MacBook Air 2.
Our school is proud to partner with the SPCA in a fundraiser called “Chase the Ace”. Tickets will be available in our school gym every Sunday from 6:30-8:30 pm with the draw taking place at 8:50 pm. The minimum prize each week is $250. The event continues every Sunday until the “ace” is caught. Every week the jackpot increases! Tickets are $3 for $5. The first draw is this Sunday!
Congratulations to Natalie Parsons who attended a swim meet in Gander last weekend.
Congratulations to Rebekah Calbert who
competed at the regional cadet biathlon competition last weekend. Rebekah’s
team placed third overall and she received third place in the junior girls
category.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Dillman who won
student of the month at Tae Kwon Do.
Congratulations to Ivor Cook who won a gold
medal at the NL and Labrador Amateur Tae kwon Do Championships in Stephenville
on Saturday in Junior Boys White Belt.
Congratulations to Noah Wall and Nicholas
Mauger who won medals in Kickboxing.
Congratulations to Dru Kennedy and Candace
Cunning, volunteers at our school, who were married last week. Dru is the son
of staff member, Dianne Kennedy.
CLASS NEWS |
The junior kindergarten classes are learning
about the letter “a”. They are enjoying doing activities with the letter. They
are enjoying spending time with the new early childhood education students from
the College of the North Atlantic.
Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion
class is learning about the letter “m”. They celebrated Mickey Mouse’s birthday
on Wednesday. In math, they are looking at the numbers before and after.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was
excited to start preparing their graden for the Little Green Thumbs Program
this week. On Wednesday they celebrated Mickey’s birthday by making theme day
Mickey ears to wear.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class had fun
filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child! They will have an update for next
week. They are learning about their senses in science class and addition and
subtraction up to 12 in math. The star of the week is Liam Couture.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is
very proud to have helped pack many boxes for Operation Christmas Child. They
had a great time choosing the items for each child. They made 3D pictures of
children catching snowflakes in art. In math they are working on writing
addition stories.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about
decisions in social studies. They are having fun using balance scales in math
and learning about equal and unequal sets.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion
class has started their math unit on
addition and subtraction. They are continuing their author study and have begun
writing and illustrating their Clifford stories.They had fun
constructing a gigantic red Clifford for their bulletin board.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class has
started new units in math on addition and subtraction. In grade three science
they have started a new unit on soil. They had a lot of fun on Mickey Mouse
Theme Day!
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French
Immersion class was busy using toothbrushes to remove Pepsi stains off eggs in
health class this week. The students
wrote math tests this week and are reading, writing and speaking about bullying
in French.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had
a great week. The grade six students presented speeches about building
community and acting for peace. Isaac Buckingham and Emily Murley represented
the class on Thursday night at the YMCA Peace Week Speak Off. The grade five
students are learning about the cardiovascular system in science.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class
is doing their last afternoon of leaf raking today. The group also held a bake
sale on Wednesday to raise money for their trip next week. The English 1201
students have finished their novel study on “The Giver” and the English 2201
students have finished studying “Night”. The grade seven to nine students are
attending Ursla Johnsons’ exhibit on basket weaving at Grenfell today.
Next Wednesday we will be wearing “Moustaches
“for Movember and collecting money for cancer. Also, on November 25 the grade
three English and French students are presenting their poetry and artwork at
the Corner Brook Public Library at 6:30 pm. This event is open to the public.
Our primary students will be taking part in
some “Learn Not to Burn” sessions next week.

Last week our students enjoyed an awesome
concert with ECMA winners Donna and Andy. The interactive show was a hit with
all the students.
Maria Reynolds and Emily O’Bryan attended a
leadership conference in St. John’s last weekend.
The grade six to level two students held a
leaf raking fundraiser for their trip to the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The
students have been busy preparing for First Lego League Robotics, Wind Turbine,
TV Video Production and Graphic Design. The team would like to thank Mr. Scott
Reynolds who volunteered last week to work with the Graphics Design team.
Mr. Drew’s grade seven to level two class
organized our annual Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday. The assembly featured the school band and
chamber choir, with the each class presenting a poem, song, or presentation
about remembrance. We would like to thank Sergeant Katie Thistle who played
“The Last Post” and Chief Warrant Officer Emily McLeod who paraded the Canadian
Flag during the assembly. Our school was visited by Legionnaires Mr. Sam Greene
and Mr. Paul Gillingham and veterans Master Corporal Jason Cull (retired) and
Lieutenant (Navy) Cheryl Cull (retired). The Cull family laid a wreath in
Remembrance during the ceremony.
Our school will be hosting the provincial
chess tournament this year. On Tuesday, our chess club was visited by Mr.
Cameron Locke, chess master.
We would like to thank Ms. Kayla Park for the
work she did with our junior kindergarten students. Ms. Park finished her
placement this week.
We would like to thank Ms.
Charlene Lovell who volunteered at the Breakfast Program this past week.
The Recycle My Cell Campaign continues this
week. We are collecting used and broken cell phones.
We are once again having an Apple-A -Day
fundraiser. The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program.
Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The five days of draws will begin in
January 11 and conclude on January 15th. Prizes include: a 16GB IPod
touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad Air and Apple TV,
and an 11inch MacBook Air 2.

year. Last year they filled 66 show boxes for children in developing countries.
This year they hope to fill even more. They are looking for donations of small
toys, pencils, sharpeners, tooth brushes, face cloths and other items to pack
in the shoe boxes for this program.
The junior kindergarten classes are learning
about the letter “A”. The children enjoyed singing in the Remembrance Day
assembly on Tuesday.
Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion
class performed the poem "Coquelicot" at the school Remembrance Day
assembly on Tuesday. They made poppies to accompany their poem. This week they
learned the letter “L” and are now able to read three French words! In science
they are continuing to learn about living things, and what they need to grow.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is
working on needs and wants in social studies class. They are practicing the
letter “F”. The class was excited to take part in the Remembrance Day assembly
on Tuesday morning.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has
started a new unit in math on adding and subtracting up to 12. They have also
started a new science unit and are studying the five senses. They made
beautiful paintings in honor of Remembrance Day.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class learned
more about the importance of Remembrance Day this week when Uriah’s mom and
dad, who are veterans, came to speak with the class! This week in social
studies they learned about rights and responsibilities. In math they learned
about one and two more; and one and two less. The star of the week is Katie.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is observing air
conditions in science. They have
been practicing for the Remembrance Day poem for the school assembly and are also learning about least
and greatest in math.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion
class have busy with an author study on Norman Bridwell. They were busy
preparing for the Remembrance Day ceremony this week.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French
Immersion class presented the poem “In Flanders Fields” in French at the
Remembrance Day assembly on Tuesday. On Thursday the grade four students teamed
up with the grade four English students for a field trip to Atlantic Minerals
on the Port Aux Port peninsula to investigate the mining process.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class both finished
their numeration units in math. They read the poem “In Flanders Fields” at the
Remembrance Day assembly. They had a guest speaker join their class to talk
about his experience as a member of the Canadian Military and his family’s history
with the military. They all learned a lot of information and got to see some
interesting memorabilia!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was
excited to play with the older students as part of the school band for the
assembly. The grade five students lit candles for peace at the school’s annual
Remembrance Day Assembly. The students are finishing up their math units this
week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class
enjoyed organizing the Remembrance Day assembly. For many students it was their
first Remembrance Day service. The level one and two students finished up their
language arts novel studies this week. In religion, the class has been
reviewing the celebration of Mass in the Catholic faith.

Last Friday students and staff enjoyed a
Halloween costume parade, haunted house and creepy food stations prepared by
the Student Leadership Council. Thank
you to Mr. Drew Nadon, Mr. Ryley Nadon and the Student Leadership Council for
organizing this event.
Say cheese! This Monday was school photo day.
The grade three English and French Immersion
students went on a field trip on Tuesday as part of their ArtSmarts project.
The students identified trees and created artwork from bark and leaf rubbings
with artist Jane Reagh. The group will prepare their final artwork and write
poetry about fall trees. For their final project the students will create a
class book and present their poetry and artwork at the Corner Brook Public Library.
On Thursday our school once again hosted a
Donna and Andy show for all students. It was an afternoon of music and fun for
everyone.
Today our grade five and six students are
attending an art exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery by Ursula Johnson called, “Mi’Kwite’tmn (Do
You Remember)”. The students will also
participate in a basket making activity.
The grade one English and grade one and two

Egg Day prize package. Our breakfast program will receive an electric skillet,
kitchen utensils, and coupons for eggs.
Thank you to all our families for their
support of the Humber Rotary winter clothing drive for kids. We had a lot of
winter clothing donated for this cause.

Our school is participating in the Scripps
National Spelling Bee program. The grade four to eight students have begun
preparing for the classroom spelling bee to take place later in November. Our
school spelling bee is scheduled for December 7.
The junior kindergarten classes are learning
about Remembrance Day and what it means to them. They enjoyed making poppies in
class. They welcome Adam Thomas and Max Wall to their class this week.

class celebrated rainbow day on Wednesday to complete their colour theme days.
The students are preparing for the Remembrance Day assembly. They are very
excited to report that they learned to read this week!

preparing for the Remembrance Day ceremony next week. The students are busy
working on the letter “t” and learning about seeds and plant life in science.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has
been working on comparing groups of numbers. They are working on an art project
for Remembrance Day and learning the French version of O’Canada.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class has
been learning and writing about Remembrance Day this week. They are comparing
sets of objects in math. They really enjoyed the Donna and Andy performance
yesterday. The star of the week is Jack.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is working on a
beautiful painting for Remembrance Day. In math they are doing estimations. In
language arts the students read the book “Gifts” and are busy making some
plasticine artwork.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion
class has been learning O’Canada in French. They have started a research unit
on Norman Bridwell, author of the Clifford books. They have been
comparing the early editions with the more recent ones.
Mme. Moss’s grade three, four and five French
Immersion class made homemade salsa with ingredients grown in our very own
greenhouse. It was delicious! The grade four and five students are attending
the Grenfell Art Exhibition this afternoon.

port as part of their science curriculum.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class had a
very busy week! The grade three students, along with the French Immersion grade
three class had a field trip on Monday to Margaret Bowater park with local

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class have
been busy practicing their band piece of the Remembrance Day ceremony next
week. The students are also busy researching a variety of topics on remembrance
and writing essays about Remembrance Day. The grade six students are busy
working on missions for the First Lego League Robotics competition at the
Intermediate Skills Challenge at the end of the month. The students are looking
forward to their workshop at the Grenfell Art Gallery today.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two
class has been preparing for their skills challenge trip. They will be holding
a leaf raking fundraiser this Saturday. The students have begun writing their
Remembrance Day essays in language arts.
