Reyd Ward, Jenna Cammie and Caleb Rashleigh enjoy a cold glass of apple juice in cups made of ice. The students had a cool outdoor class reading about Canada's ice hotel and drinking apple juice as part of their language arts program on Monday. 

 

Students in grade five and six visited City Hall to have lunch with Mayor Pender and Councillor Mary Ann Murphy n Wednesday. After their lunch, they took a seat in Council Chambers and listened to Mayor Pender speak about the City Council. Our junior kindergarten to grade four students participated in hand washing sessions with local pharmacist, Janice Coleman, this week.

The grade seven to level two students have continued writing their midterm exams this week. The last exam, Chemistry 2202, is being written on Monday.

Mr. Ryley is happy to announce that the school’s climbing wall is being installed in the gymnasium. Classes will begin lessons using this new feature very soon.

The elementary cross country skiing lessons continued this week. The students are enjoying the fresh outdoors and learning a new skill.

This week we say goodbye to our Brazilian exchange students. They have been wonderful additions to our school and we will miss them very much. This afternoon classes will celebrate with them and students will have an opportunity to say goodbye.

Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will participate in the J.J. Curling Invitational Basketball Tournament this weekend.

This Sunday is the Regional Chess Competition at St. Gerard’s. Registration begins at 9 am and is $20. We wish our chess players good luck at this competition.

Our school family would like to send our condolences to the family of Father Aiden Divine who passed suddenly last Thursday. He was a wonderful priest and will be truly missed.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who won a silver medal at the Western Divisional Figure Skating Competition held in Deer Lake this past weekend. Jenna has earned the right to compete at the Provincials.

Congratulations to Alister MacDonnell, Teresa Coleman, Luke Coleman and Clare Coleman who participated in a cross country skiing race this past weekend. Clare, Teresa and Luke all received medals in the races.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes enjoyed talking about penguins and the letter “F”. The children really enjoyed their hand washing session on Wednesday.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class learned about the letter “G” this week. They made sparkly art with watercolour paint and salt.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about bears in science class. They created a book about energy efficiency in language class.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class and Mme. O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class are working on a new unit on measurement in math. They are learning how to read maps in social studies this week and exploring an awesome new French spelling app on the school Ipads. They are sad to say goodbye to the Brazilian students who are leaving this weekend.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the natural features of each Atlantic province in social studies.  In religion class, they are learning about some of Jesus’s miracles. The star of the week is Ryder.

Ms. Park’s grade two class started a new chapter in math called “Data Analysis”. They are currently learning about concrete graphs. This week the students are doing student of the week writing. The student of the week is Rachael. The stars of the week so far have been Brady, Daniel, Jake, and Rachael.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is learning to conjugate French verbs in the present tense and using games to practice. The group is enjoying the skiing lessons at Blow Me Down.

Ms. Crockers’ grade three and four class are finishing their multiplication unit in math. They also finished their class video about saving energy. The grad four students are reading about Canada’s ice hotel. To get a feel for the real experience they took their reading outside to our outdoor classroom. After they finished reading, they enjoyed some apple juice in cups made of real ice!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class visited City Hall on Wednesday to have lunch with the Mayor Charles Pender and Councillor Mary Ann Murphy. The class, along with the grade five French Immersion students enjoyed a pizza lunch and an information session in council chambers. The students were invited to City Hall as the winners of the City of Corner Brook 60th anniversary slogan contest.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class are saying goodbye to their Brazilian classmates. The Brazilian students had a lot of fun cross country skiing at Blow Me Down trails on Tuesday afternoon. The students’ exchange is ending and the group will be returning home on Saturday. The class has been busy with exams for the past week and half, but will have their final midterm exam on Monday.

Last Friday our students were treated to a special concert by the Atlantic String Quartet in our school gym. The violinist and cello players were wonderful. At the end students had the opportunity to ask questions about the group.

On the weekend our grade six girls’ basketball team played in the Tiny Titans Tournament. Thank you to the girls and coaches, Ms. Bishop and Mme. Moss. Players of the game for our school included Clare Coleman and Trinity Rouse.

Dr. Mark Smallwood visited the grade seven to level two class last Friday afternoon to discuss medicine as a career option.

Dr. Jose Lam, chess expert, visited our school chess club on Tuesday to prepare students for the upcoming Regional Chess Tournament on January 31.

We would like to thank the Rotary Club for their donation to our school Breakfast Program.

Our Apple-A-Day Fundraiser has now concluded. We would like to thank everyone for their support. Our fundraiser raised $22,000!

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Ella Rashleigh and Trinity Rouse who cut their hair this week to donate to cancer patients.

Congratulations to Noah Colbourne, Luke Coleman, Alister MacDonnell, and Noah Evans who participated in a hockey tournament in Corner Brook this past weekend.

Congratulations to Ella Rashleigh who participated in a hockey tournament in Stephenville this past weekend.

Congratulations to Caleb Rashleigh who participated in an Atom C Tournament in Rocky Harbour. His team received a silver medal.

Congratulations to Natalie Parsons who was featured in the Western Star sports section as a member of the Corner Brook Rapids Swim Team.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about polar bears and the letter “E”. They are enjoying getting outside to play in the snow.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class celebrated beach day on Wednesday. They are enjoying playing in the snow and describe their feelings in French. They are getting very interested in weather like “true Newfoundlanders”.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “O” and studying ocean animals and habitats in science.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class and Mme. O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class are finishing up their math units on addition and subtraction. They are studying the five senses and learning about maps and directions. In art they made pastel snowmen.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about how materials are used in science class. They are really enjoying their measurement unit in math. With Hala’s wonderful Gift of Hope, the class made a food donation of $125 to an underprivileged school. The star of the week is Meteghan!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is having lots of fun building windmills and solar panels for the KIC conserving energy contest. They are learning about technology and different ways we use it.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class had a great time at Bow Me Down trails on Tuesday. The class is practicing their multiplication times tables. The grade four students are reading a book about a Korean kite festival.

Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four class had a busy week. The grade three students are working on the six times in math. In social studies they are discovering the difference between laws and rules. The grade four students had their first cross country ski lesson at Blow Me Down Trails on Tuesday. They really enjoyed being outside and learning to ski.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class has been having lots of fun wrestling in gym class this week. The grade five students are writing radio commercials for the Corner Brook Winter Carnival and the grade six students are finishing off their fairy tale news stories.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class begin their exams today. They have been busy preparing for midterms this week.  They are preparing to say goodbye to the Brazilian exchange students who will be leaving next weekend.

Isaac Alexander showing the bag of bread tags he donated to our school. The bread tags are sent to South Africa where they are recycled. The proceeds from the plastic tags purchase wheel chairs for those who need them.

Last Friday we celebrated Mass with Father Roache. After Mass he visited our classes to perform some of his famous magic tricks.
This Monday was the first draw for the Apple-A-Day Fundraiser. The winner on Monday of the 16 GB iPod was Cyril Lockyer with ticket number 523. The ticket seller was Mrs. Marjorie Deckert. The winner on Tuesday of the 16 GB iPod Touch and $25 iTunes card was Mrs. Karen Rashleigh. The ticket sellers were Lydia, Ella and Caleb Rashleigh.
Grade five student, Clare Coleman, has begun an initiative within our school to collect eye glasses for Haiti. There is a box in the main lobby for eye glass donations.  
Information regarding the leifling gala went home this past week.
Winter Carnival buttons went home this week. The buttons are $5 each. Our school will receive a portion of the button sales.
Mr. Pat Gambin and Mr. Gerard Neville visited our school this week to teach square dancing and line dancing to some of our classes in gym. The students really enjoyed these lessons.
The grade six girls’ basketball team will participate in the Tiny Titans Tournament this weekend at Corner Brook Regional High. We wish the girls good luck!
The Atlantic String Quartet will be performing at our school this morning at 11 am. This is their second consecutive visit. The students very much enjoyed their show last year.
Mary’s Kitchen is taking place every Friday evening in our school cafeteria from 5:30-6:30 pm. Chilli and rolls are served for those in need. Please come join us.
 
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Carter Bromley, Luke Coleman, Noah Evans, Alister MacDonnell, and Ella Rashleigh who participated in a Novice II hockey tournament this past weekend and received medals.
Congratulations to Caleb Rashleigh whose team won a gold medal in an Atom C tournament this past weekend.
 
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about winter and hibernation this week. They learned a lot about animals and hibernation. They really had a lot of fun playing in the snow and painting the snow.
Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has been discussing feelings and how to answer the questions “comment ça va?”. In math they are starting their inquiry about 3D figures. In art class they made colour mittens. Katy had big news to share this week – her baby cousin was born!
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class has been busy learning about co-operation, the numbers one to four and the letter “k”.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is clueing up their math unit on addition and subtraction. In science they are learning about the sense of taste.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is finishing their math unit on adding and subtracting to twelve. They are learning how God takes care of us in religion class this week. The star of the week is Mark.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is making beautiful artwork of penguins in the sunset this week. They read a funny story “Coyote Sings to the Moon” and learned about legends. They are learning about solids in science class.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is discussing states of matter in science. They have begun a new unit on mapping in social studies.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is using math games to practice their multiplication. The grade five students are doing a jigsaw reading assignment to learn about different roles in a medieval hierarchy.  
Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four class has been working on their multiplication this week. The grade three students are working very hard on their five times multiplication and are making a video for science on saving energy. The grade four students are working on their seven times tables in math. In language arts they are learning about marketing techniques on cereal boxes.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class really enjoyed the wrestling class they had last week with Mr. Pat Gambin. The grade five students are learning about electricity in science. The grade five students are writing a news article for the “Ever After Times”. It is a newspaper about fairy tales.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class is preparing for their upcoming midterm exams next week. On Wednesday the class had a session on special study tips, how to manage their time, and deal with test anxiety.

Junior Kindergarten student, Isaac Alexander, who make a large donation of bread tags to our school. Bread tags are sent to South Africa to be recycled. For every 5,000 bread tags a wheelchair is give to a person in need. Our school has recycled over 43,000 bread tags. 




We would like to welcome everyone back from Christmas holidays and wish everyone a happy New Year!

On our last day of school before the Christmas break the Student Leadership Council hosted a variety show. It was a lot of fun. Thank you to the students, Mr. Drew and Mrs. McCarthy for putting this show together.

We would like to thank Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group who presented a beautiful Christmas pageant at All Hallows Church on Christmas Eve.

Our Apple-A-Day Fundraiser draws will begin next Monday. Tickets are $20. There are a limited number of tickets available at the office. The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program. Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The prizes include: a 16GB IPod touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB  IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad Air and Apple TV, and an 11inch MacBook Air 2. All tickets are entered in all five draws.

The elementary school cross country skiing program will begin on Tuesday, January 12 and will run for four consecutive weeks.

Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy’s class who won the City of Corner Brook’s 60th anniversary slogan contest. Their slogan “Celebrating 60 years: Rooted in the Past, Branching into the Future”, will be featured during the celebration events.
Congratulations to our primary winners in the Knights of Columbus “Keep Christ in Christmas” Colouring Contest.  Our winners included: Katy Hancock, Elizabeth Barry and Audria Peddle In kindergarten; Robert Morrissey, Hala Parsons and Kara Blanchard in grade one; Kaitlyn Coade, Israela Ngania, and Ella Rashleigh in grade two; and Gabriel Rowsell, Kate Murphy and Nikola Verbiski in grade three.

 


Congratulations to Brooke Watton who cut her hair for cancer earlier this week. Brooke’s hair will be used to make a wig for a person undergoing cancer treatment.

CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are talking about winter and doing lots of crafts and science activities. The children really enjoyed their Christmas holiday. The classes welcome Ms. Shannon Butt who is replacing Ms. Brittany Randell during her maternity leave.  The class also welcomes a new student, Emily Tucker, to the program.


Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is wishing everyone a happy New Year. The class discussed how they celebrated their holiday with their families. They are learning about the weather in science and how to dress properly for outdoor activities.


Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was very excited to see the huge growth in their plants over the Christmas holidays. They participated in a Christmas Show and Tell this week and are working on the letter “k”.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion and class is working on mental math and making fireworks projects in art. In science class they are learning about the eye.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is happy to be back after the Christmas holiday. The students welcome Isaiah Coleman to their class.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is writing New Year’s goals for 2016. They are making a fireworks craft in art. In science they made a see-saw lever with a simple machine gift they were given at Christmas. They would like to wish everyone a happy New Year!

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is learning about solids, liquids, and gases in science class. The students had a wonderful Christmas holiday.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class has begun units in math on multiplication. They are working on interrogative questions in French.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class said goodbye to Ms. Horner on Monday. Ms. Horner has left IHMS to have a baby. The students welcome their new teacher Ms. Kimberley Crocker. The students are learning about multiplication in math and are building structures in science.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great holiday, but were eager to get back to school and see their friends. The grade five students have begun a new unit on evaluating as they read in language arts. They reading a book called “A Dog’s Life”. The grade six students are finishing off their book “Raven Quest”. The students are making posters of Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Sites in social studies and art class.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class went sliding on Wednesday at Margaret Bowater Park. The students had a lot of fun. The students are working on Newfoundland heritage projects in social studies class.
