Jaabili Kollipara and Charlie Hynes made a log cabin and wood pile out of foam shapes in Kindergarten French Immersion class this week as part of a lesson on patterning and building in math.

On Monday we celebrated Pi Day in our classes. Some of our students are memorizing the digits of Pi for our upcoming Pi Day contest.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class hosted a bake sale on Monday to raise money for their humanitarian project to buy livestock for a village in need.

On Thursday we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a green theme day. Many of our classes were busy trying to catch the leprechaun. The Student Leadership Council sold gold coins and hosted a guessing contest for classes to win a pot of leprechaun treasure. Mr. Drew’s homeroom is organizing our annual St. Patrick’s Day Family Potluck and social this Sunday from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. Families and extended family members are welcome!

Today we are hosting our Term 1 Awards assembly. We are honouring perfect attendance, perfect spelling, improved reading awards, academic excellence and provincial contest winners. Congratulations to everyone on their achievements in Term 1.

Congratulations to our school choir, chamber choir, primary choir, junior kindergarten and kindergarten choir  grade five and six band and junior and senior high bands who performed in the Corner Brook Rotary Festival last week. Everyone performed exceptionally well.

We would like to wish a happy birthday to Ms. Cora Ochoa!

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to all our students who performed in the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival, including: Simon Boitsefski, Isaac Buckingham, Sarah Buckingham, Clare Coleman, Luke Coleman, Noah Evans, Ava Hodder, Aria Kazerouni, Ani Kennedy, Alessandra LeBlanc, Arabella LeBlanc, Alister MacDonnell, Charlotte Mercier, Isabelle Mercier, Israela Ngania, Ella Rashleigh, Gabriel Rowsell, Lily Smallwood, and Colin Spencer.

Congratulations to Stars of the Festival winners. Simon Boitsefski received $50 for Theatre Newfoundland Labrador musical theatre scholarship and a $50 scholarship in memory of Rob Michael for junior piano. Clare Coleman received a $50 scholarship from Academy Canada for musical mheatre, a $50 scholarship from Carlson Wagonlit & Harvey’s Travel for junior piano and junior voice.  Luke Coleman received a $25 Ida Lundrigan Scholarship for musical theatre, and $25 Ida Lundrigan Scholarship for piano. Aria Kazerouni received $50 scholarship in memory of Rob Michael for junior piano. Alister MacDonnell received a $50 Beta Sigma Phi scholarship for percussion. Lily Smallwood received a $25 Ida Lundrigan scholarship for piano and a $25 scholarship for musical theatre. Colin Spencer received a $50 Academy Canada scholarship for musical theatre, a $50 scholarship in memory of Rob Michael for junior voice, and a $50 Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship for piano.

Congratulations to Emma Cook who received her level one swimming badge and Ivor Cook who received his level four badge this week.

Congratulations to carter Bromley, Noah Colbourne, and Noah Evans who participated in a novice tournament in St. John’s this past weekend. Carter received a trophy for being the Player of the Game.

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie and Rebecca Janes who participated in the synchronized Figure Skating Competition this past weekend. Jenna’s team won gold!

Congratulations to Kara Blanchard, Wes Cleveland, Emma Cook, Ivor Cook Gabriel Rowsell, Carter Hickey, Logan George, Rotém Phillips Grobelaar,  Shane Matthews, Fabian Ryan, Liam Stride, Brooke Watton, and Jack Watton who received medals from the Marble Mountain Ski Program.

Congratulations to Charlotte Mercier, Isabelle Mercier, and Trinity Rouse who cut off their hair to donate for cancer patients!

Congratulations to Jacob Bursey, Max Chrappa, Uriah Cull, James Lao and Alister MacDonnell who participated in the Provincial Chess Tournament in St. John’s this past weekend. Alister MacDonnell received a Most Sportsmanship Award, an award that was presented for the first time in thirteen years. Uriah cull placed second in the grade one category. Congratulations to all participants.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes learned about St. Patrick’s Day this week. The students were happy to see the sunshine and go outside to play in the snow this week. Everyone is looking forward to Easter vacation.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is studying the letter “v” this week. They had a lot of fun on their hospital field trip on Wednesday. A leprechaun left footprints and coins all over their classroom on St. Patrick’s Day.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed their visit to the Western Regional Memorial Hospital to attend the kindergarten orientation.  The class set a trap for the leprechaun on Thursday, but did not catch him!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class learned about St. Patrick this week. They had a lot of fun making leprechaun traps. They didn’t manage to catch one, but did receive a note and some treats. In science they learned about living things. They enjoyed Pi Day on Monday too!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class held a bake sale on Monday in aid of their humanitarian project. They raised 115.00! The class is also planning a used kid’s book sale. They had a lot of fun this week celebrating St. Patrick’s Day!

Ms. Park’s grade two class was excited to try catching a leprechaun. On Monday they wrote instructions on how to catch one and on Wednesday they built traps. In science they are learning about friction.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class have been very busy this week. The grade three students are learning about soil health and global importance of preserving soil. The grade four students are using what they learned in their sound unit to orchestrate songs for their ears. The grade five students presented their speeches in language arts class.

Ms. Crockers’ grade three and four class were really excited to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday. The grade three students have started a new unit on fractions in math, while the grade four students are learning about reducing and comparing fractions. The grade four students celebrated Pi Day by writing Pi-kus. A Pi-ku is a poem similar to a Haiku except it has three lines of 3-1-4 syllables and is written about math.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class presented their speeches in class this week. The grade five students had a chocolate tasting on Monday. The class favourite was Lindt chocolate closely followed by Cadbury Dairy Milk and Hersey. The grade six students wrote creative Pi-Kus for Pi Day on Monday. In health class the students are creating a recipe book.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class had a great time at the National Geoscience and Engineering Month Bridge Building competition on Saturday. Jordan Park and Myles Calbert’s bridge held 160 kg! The class visited the public library on Tuesday for an orientation to begin their Heritage Fair and Enterprise Olympics projects.

Coming Up

The annual Elementary Speak Off will be held in our school cafeteria this Monday evening at 7 pm.

Jacob Cull, Matthew Kemp and Noah Colbourne practice their Japanese character writing during a presentation by some Japanese students from Grenfell Campus. The students visited the school as part of the Culture to Community Program. 



Last Friday afternoon we had an afternoon of Special Olympic games in the gym. Students played floor hockey, speed skating, snow shoe races, ice skating and more. Thank you to Mr. Ryley and the junior high and senior high students who organized the events.

This week our choirs and bands performed at the Rotary Music Festival. On Monday the primary choir took part in a workshop, on Tuesday the school choir and chamber choir performed, on Thursday morning the junior kindergarten and kindergarten choirs performed, and today the grade five and six band will perform, as well as the junior and senior high band.

On Tuesday we welcomed Special Olympic athletes Philip Beales, Nikki King, and Brandon Park to our school to talk about their experience in the winter games, how they prepared, and their special equipment.

Report cards went home on Wednesday for students in kindergarten to grade six. Parent teacher interviews took place on Thursday evening.

On Wednesday we welcomed four Japanese students to our school as part of the Culture to Community Program through Grenfell Campus. The students gave a presentation on Japanese culture, season, and language. Afterwards, the students did individual sessions with small groups on origami and Japanese character writing. Thank you to Mr. Thomas Young who organized the Culture to Community Program for our school.

Lily Smallwood collected donations for our school greenhouse at her birthday party instead of receiving gifts. Lily donated over $350 to our school greenhouse.

Clare Coleman has reached her goal of collecting 500 pairs of used eye glasses for Haiti. We are continuing to collect donations of eye glasses until the end of March.

Our school is also collecting bread tags, used batteries, pens and markers, and ink cartridges for recycling.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Jordan Park who participated in a provincial bowling competition in St. John’s. His team won bronze.

Congratulations to our students who took part in the music festival this week. Lily Smallwood placed first and Ella Rashleigh placed third in Class 661-A Piano - Preparatory (A/B) not over 9; Alessandra LebBlanc placed third in Class 210-A Concert Group Any voice – 10 and under; and Simon Boitsefski placed first and Colin Spencer placed second in Class 210-B Concert Group – Any voice – 10 and under. Congratulations in the Rotary Music Festival.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are talking about St. Patrick’s Day. They enjoyed singing in the music festival. They would like to welcome two College of the North Atlantic students to their class this week: Ms. Jacqueline Bennett and Caitlyn Simms.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the letter “r” this week. They researched megalodon sharks and mapped out their 20 m length in the hallway. The students were very excited to sing at the Arts and Culture Centre as part of the Rotary Music Festival. It was also exciting to get to ride a school bus!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed the Special Olympian visit on Tuesday. The students had fun performing at the Rotary Music Festival. They were very excited to ride the bus to the Arts and Culture Centre on Thursday. The class is very excited to announce that they won two iPads in the HotShots contest!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed meeting our amazing Olympians on Tuesday! This week they also enjoyed some Japanese culture in their classroom. They learned about life in Japan, origami and how to write their name with Japanese characters.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class were excited to greet the Special Olympians. They are so proud of their hard work. They are fabulous role models. The students also took part in a Culture to Culture presentation with Japanese students who are attending Grenfell Campus.

Ms. Park’s grade two class have been learning about simple machines in science. They are excited to build their own. The students learned how to write their names in Japanese and make some cool origami on Wednesday with some visiting Japanese students.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is working on St. Patrick’s Day writing activities in French, as well as St. Patrick’s Day data in math. They will be using plenty of games to practice their St. Patrick’s Day vocabulary.

Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four class had a busy week. The students loved performing in the Rotary Music Festival on Tuesday morning at the Arts and Culture Centre.  The grade four students are almost finished writing their speeches for the Elementary Speak Off. The grade three students are finishing up their novel study in language arts.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class made St. Patrick’s Day leprechauns in art on Monday. The students are practicing their speeches for the upcoming Elementary Speak Off.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class will compete on Saturday in the National Geosciences and Engineering Month Bridge Building Competition at the Corner Brook Plaza. The judging for the competition begins at 10 am and the bridge testing will begin at 11. All bridges are tested until they break. The students are looking forward to see how much weight their bridges will hold.

Last week we had another successful Scholastic Book Fair. Liam Gaulton was the winner of the candy guessing game, and Nicholas Mauger won the guess for the number of pages in the book game. The family draw was won by Cassie Hoskins. She received $25 for her family and $25 for her classroom.  Family literacy night winners were Lily Smallwood, Ryder Borden, and Ethan Hicks.

We would like to thank our families for their support of the Corner Brook Winter Carnival. IHMS sold 710 buttons this year.

This month is Mathletics March Madness. Our students will be competing in math contests with students worldwide.

Currently we are collected old single use batteries as part of an environmental initiative through MMSB.

We would like to congratulate our participants in the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee last week. Representing grade four Natalie Parsons and Caleb Rashleigh, representing grade five  Clare Coleman and Colin Spencer, and representing grade six Isaac Buckingham and Aaron White. Isaac Buckingham was the overall winner in grade six. Congratulations to all our spellers!

Over the weekend Isaac Buckingham and Isabelle Mercier travelled to St. John’s to compete in the Fourth Annual Scripps Spelling Bee. The students studied over 1100 words in preparation for the event. We would like to congratulate them on their performance! Mme. Moss and Mrs. McCarthy also attended the spelling bee to support our spellers.

The girls’ and boys’ grade six basketball teams participated in the West Coast Provincials over the weekend. Congratulations to our teams on their performances.

Mr. Nadon’s grade four and five science classes were the provincial winners in the K-I-C contest sponsored by Newfoundland Light and Power. As a result of the provincial win our school will receive five new iPads! As well, Mrs. Hodder’s kindergarten class was a runner up in the same contest and will receive two new iPads.

Our school is the provincial winner in the Recylce My Cell Campaign. We are the recipients of a $500 environmental grant and we will receive $1 for every cell phone we recycled.

We would like to congratulate all the Special Olympic athletes visiting Corner Brook and competing in a variety of sports. We are looking forward to meeting with local athletes next week.  

Colin Spencer, along with his mom Janice Spencer, sang “O’Canada” and “The Ode to Newfoundland” at the opening of the Special Olympics on Tuesday evening.

Congratulations to Carter Bromley, Noah Colbourne, and Mark Janes who participated in a novice tournament in Twin Towns on Saturday. Their team won a gold medal.

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who participated in a figure skating competition in Botwood this past weekend. Jenna earned the right to participate in the Atlantic Championships.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the special Olympic sports. They talked about the letter “j” and did activities with the letter.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by painting cat in the hat mosaic paintings. The students were busy learning the letter “q” this week.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed tasting cucumber from their Little Green Thumbs Garden. They are thrilled to have won iPads for the school through the Hotshots contest. This week they have been learning about Special Olympic Sports.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been learning about the Special Olympics. They are really looking forward to meeting some of the athletes when they visit our school next week. They would like to wish them the best of luck! In science class they have been learning about our similarities and differences. In math, the students are working on different ways to make groupings.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class have been talking about ways that we can include everyone in our activities this week. The students are very excited about the Special Olympics and the athletes visiting our school next week. They are also working on a humanitarian project that will purchase animals and seeds for a village in another country.

Ms. Park’s grade two class learned about how water can change form by doing a fun experiment with melting a mini snowman. They discussed the Special Olympics and completed a craft. In math, they are having lots of fun measuring things in their classroom. Last week they were delighted to have Leif the Lucky visit their class with our Leifling, Alister MacDonnell

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class would like to congratulate Isabelle Mercier for her performance in the Telegram Scripps Spelling Bee last weekend. This week the students are being parts of speech detectives in French and writing about their daily routines using present tense conjugation.

Ms. Crockers’ grade three and four class having been thinking about the special Olympians this week and supporting our athletes by attending the opening ceremonies. The grade three students have been learning how to interpret bar graphs and compare them in venn diagrams. The grade four’s are creating their own pictographs in math. Both classes are working on novel studies in language arts. The grade fours are preparing speeches for the upcoming Elementary Speak Off.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class created business ideas and logos for the YMCA Create A Logo Contest this week.  The grade five students learned how chocolate is made from coco beans in Gahana. The video made everyone hungry! The grade six class is continuing their novel study on “Holes”.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class is looking forward to organizing the school’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Potluck Dinner. The grade seven and eight students are working on a novel study. The grade nine to level two students are beginning their Shakespearean study by learning about Shakespeare and making him a Facebook page.
