Last Friday, Father Raymond De Souza visited our school. Father Raymond is the chaplain for Newman House, the Catholic chaplaincy at Queen's University. He toured our school and met with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group after school.

To celebrate Earth Day on Friday all classes posted a pledge to protect the Earth. Classes had “lights out” from 9:30-10:30 am to remind us the importance of conserving energy. Many classes all created recycled artwork to show that items can have multiple uses.

Mrs. Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for The Long Range Mountains, visited our school on Monday as part of School Rep Day. Mrs. Hutchings met with students in grades four to level 2. She spoke about our system of government and her role as MP for our riding. Mrs. Hutchings also answered students’ questions and posed for a group photo.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class hosted a very successful used book sale last week. The class raised $115 for their humanitarian project. They are very excited to be able to purchase necessary supplies for a community in need.

On Monday evening, our school hosted a parent information session for parents for our full day Junior Kindergarten and full day English and French Kindergarten students for September 2016.  Parents had the opportunity to visit the classrooms and talk to the teachers about the program and daily routines.

The Eco Kids Battery Busters contest officially ends today. Thank you to our families for their support of this initiative. We will continue to recycle batteries as part of our regular recycling program. 

IHMS is hosting the Grade Six Boys’ Soccer Tournament this weekend. The first game is on Friday at 3:15 pm. The Grade Six Girls’ Soccer Tournament is being hosted at Sacred Heart.

Our school is hosting skating for our families on Saturday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the Kinsmen Arena. All are welcome!

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club who hosted its annual year end ice show with guest performer Patrick Chan. Congratulations to our IHMS skaters:  Brooklyn Collins, Emma Cook, Jenna Cammie,  Emma Gaudett, Rebecca Janes, Ella Rashleigh, and Leah Lainey.

Congratulations to Mark Janes who received his yellow stripe certification by breaking two pieces of board in Tae Kwon Do.

Congratulations to Nikola Verbiski who caught the largest fish (90 pound) tarpon at a fishing competition in Islamorada, Florida!

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “p” and talking about Mother’s Day. They would like to congratulate Rylan Andrews whose family welcomed a new baby, Isaac!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has finished their alphabet books. They are talking about migratory birds and are finishing their recycled bird feeders. The class is excited to see The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe today!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about capacity in math. In science, they are learning about which items float and which items sink.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been learning about the different kinds of penguins. They picked their favourite penguin to do some thorough research on. They are loving it! They are very excited to be going to the Arts and Culture Centre today to see The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. They would like to wish Meteghan a very Happy Birthday. The star of the week is Uriah.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is excited to see The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe today. The class has just begun a unit on living things in science class. They are excited to report that some of the vegetables they started in the greenhouse are sprouting.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is excited to go see The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at the Arts and Culture Centre today. They would like to congratulate Lily who is in the show! This week they are making cool recycled crafts out of juice boxes.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class worked very hard this week on posters about climate change. The students were very excited to plant in the greenhouse this week.

Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four classes are excited about going to see the play today at the Arts and Culture Centre. The grade three students are working on a unit on media in language arts. This week they are focusing on advertisement, helpful signs, and nonsense signs. In math, they are finishing their unit on measurement. The grade four students visited the outdoor classroom this week and are finishing their unit on fractions and decimals in math.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class has been very busy. The grade five’s are conducting experiments in science and reading about the Legend of King Arthur. The grade six students are studying for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and reviewing their math units for the provincial assessment in June.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class is getting ready for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and Underwater Robotics. The grades seven to nine students are beginning speeches for the Junior High Speak-Off.

The Spring Photo Shoot is on Monday. This is a full uniform day for all classes.

The Underwater Robotics team will travel to St. John’s next week for their challenge.

Students in grades six, seven, and eight will compete at Grenfell Campus for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge on Friday.

On Monday we held our annual school Heritage Fair. The theme was “Service and Sacrifice”. Our school winners include: Simon Boitsefski, Isaac Buckingham, Myles Calbert, Marcus Gallant, Carly Johannesen, Madison Noel, Natalie Parsons, Caleb Rashleigh, Colin Spencer, and Reyd Ward. We would like to thank our judges: Ms. Marie Claude Renard, Mr. Rick Solo, Mrs. Marie Ryan and Mme. Moss.

We are continuing to collect used batteries for Eco Kids Battery Busters Contest. Our goal is to recycle 1,000 pounds of batteries before April 29. We have over 400 pounds so far!

Today is Earth Day. Our classes are celebrating with Earth Day activities and our junior kindergarten students are singing a special song in mass at All Halllows. We will celebrate Lights out Canada at 9:30 am.

The Underwater Robotics Team went to the Greenwood Inn and Suites on Wednesday to practice with their robots in the pool. The team will travel to St. John’s the first weekend in May.

On Monday, Mrs. Gudie Hutchings, Liberal Member of Parliament, will visit our school as part of the Student Elections Program. This program supports the Student Vote and bringing elected officials into schools to promote an interest government and politics.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are working on the letter “o” this week. They have completed Earth Day activities to celebrate our amazing planet. They are excited to sing their Earth Day song at mass today! They would like to thank their CONA students for the last five weeks in their classrooms.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is working on the letter “z” this week. They are excited to celebrate Earth Day today. In art they learned about creating things from recycled materials. They made flowers from egg cartons and bird feeders from milk cartons.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class learned about Earth Day this week and how to protect it. They are learning about length, weight and capacity in math. They are working on the letter “z” in language.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been learning about climate change and taking care of our resources. They are celebrating Earth Day today by writing pledges, poems, planting seeds and making sculptures from disposables! Don’t forget the 3 R’s- reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is working on Earth Day activities this week. They made a mobile of the Earth. They spent a whole day in the greenhouse this week prepping and planting for the next harvest season. They held a used book sale on Wednesday and Thursday to raise money for their charity project.

Ms. Park’s grade two class enjoyed their Earth Day crafts and activities this week. They are sending their Flat Stanley’s all around the world this week and they are very excited about it! They are learning about simple machines in science and made a ramp on Wednesday.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion classes are planting in the greenhouse this week to celebrate Earth Day! The grade four students have been having a lot of fun experimenting with using sequencing strategies in language arts class.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class’s Little Green Thumbs Garden is beginning to really grow! The grade three students are finishing their math unit on measurement. In science they are learning about magnetic forces. The grade four students participated in their first Heritage Fair on Monday. They are learning how decimals compare to dollars and cents in math.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class really enjoyed the school Heritage Fair on Monday. The grade five students have started a new unit in language arts on sequencing. The grade six students are reviewing previous math concepts for their provincial assessment.

Mr. Drew’s  junior high and level 2 class is preparing for the “Let’s Talk Science Challenge” and the Underwater Robotics competition in May.

There will be a Parent Information session for full day Junior Kindergarten and full day Kindergarten English and French Immersion on Monday, April 25th. The session will take place in the school cafeteria at 7:00 pm.

Our school musical “Oliver” is on May 26th at 7:00 pm.

Kindergarten graduation is on June 2nd at 6:00 pm.

The grade seven to Level II class presented their play “You’re Driving Me Crazy” at the Western Region Drama Festival on Saturday evening. The play earned a lot of laughter and applause from the audience. Congratulations to the group on a wonderful performance.

The level I girls’ basketball team played in the West Coast Provincial Basketball Tournament in Stephenville. Thank you to the coaches for supporting the team in this tournament. The girls had a great showing. Congratulations to Makenzy Bishop and Maria Reynolds who received Player of the Game Awards.

On Monday, Kindergarten graduation photos and school group photos were taken for our yearbook.

To promote our EcoKids Battery recycling program our classes made slogans about recycling batteries. Our classes presented their slogans live through the media centre. We are collected used batteries for the contest until the end of the month.

Last week we celebrated World Health Day on Thursday with healthy classroom activities.

Students, Carter Bromley and Noah Colbourne, have organized an afterschool floor hockey program for kindergarten to grade two from 4 pm to 5 pm on Monday.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to our school winners in the National Geoscience and Engineering Month Poster Contest winners. In kindergarten to grade 1 Western District, group A: Willow Boland received first place, Metegah Kane received second place, and Katy Hancock received third place. In grades 2-3 Western District, group B: Alister MacDonnell received first place, Alyssa Power received second place, and Nicholas Mauger received third place. In grades 4-6 Western District, group C: Clare Coleman received first place, Reyd Ward received second place, and Isaac Buckingham received third place.

Last week the Knights of Columbus held their annual Free Throw Competition in our school gym. In the boys’ 9 and under category Aria Kazerouni placed second, and Carter Bromley tied for third. In boys 11 and under Colin Spencer received third place.  In boys’ 12 and under James Murphy placed first and Myles Calbert and Jordan Park tied for third.  In the girls’ 9 and under category Jenna Cammie placed first and Natalie Parsons placed second. In the 10 and under category Clare Coleman placed first. In the 13 and under category Makenzy Bishop placed first and Kori Noel places second. In 14 years and under Rebekah Calbert placed first.  All first place participants were invited to attend the regional Free Throw Competition held in Grand Falls. James Murphy and Jenna Cammie represented our school. Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who placed first in the girls’ age 9 category at the Regional Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition this past Sunday in Grand Falls.

Congratulations to Carter Bromley and Mark Janes who received medals in a hockey tournament in Gander this past weekend. Their team was undefeated.

Congratulations to Natalie Parsons who performed in a swimming competition this past weekend.

Congratulations to Emily and Sophie Tucker who received medals from the Marble Mountain Ski Program.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “n”. They also talked about spring and did some spring crafts. Hopefully it will bring spring weather!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about the letter “y”. They made stained glass globes for Earth Day and continued working on making numbers up to 10 in math.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about measurement in math and machines in science. Their Little Green Thumbs tomatos are ripe and ready to sample. On Wednesday, they performed their battery slogans in a live broadcast from the media centre.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is really enjoying their unit on penguins. Did you know that there are 17 different kinds of penguins? In math they are comparing and sorting 2-D shapes according to their attributes. They are also learning about animal similarities and differences in science class.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is adding and subtracting numbers up to 100. They have finished their dragonfly art project and painted kites this week in preparation for spring. The class is busy planning what they will plant in the greenhouse.

Ms. Park’s grade two class started a novel study called “Flat Stanley” this week. They will be sending their Flat Stanley’s all around the world. They are learning about simple machines in science.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is looking at common objects to estimate measurements. They are comparing different structures in science. The grade four science class is using what they learned about habitats to build a habitat for a new class pet.

Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four class had a busy week. The grade three students are working on punctuating their descriptive writing. In math they are exploring various units of measurement. The grade four students are turning fractions into decimals. They class has finished their novel study on “Dear Mr. Henshaw”.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed comparing their book studies to the movie adaptations this week. They have started a new unit in language arts on sequencing. The class is looking forward to the Heritage Fair next week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class is preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and the upcoming Underwater Robotics Competition. The Level I girls’ basketball team had a great showing in their tournament last week in Stephenville.

Full day kindergarten and full day English and French Kindergarten registration is ongoing. There will be a parent information session on Monday, April 25th, at 7:00 pm in the school cafeteria. Please contact the main office for further information.

Our school Heritage Fair is Monday at 11:15- 12:15. Families are welcome to visit and view the projects.

We would like to welcome everyone back from Easter vacation!

Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group held the Divine Mercy at All Hallow’s Church on Sunday afternoon. It was a beautiful celebration.

The Knights of Columbus held their annual Free Throw Competition in our school gym on Wednesday evening. The competition was open to boys and girls aged 9 to 14.

The Level I Girls’ Basketball team is playing in a tournament in Stephenville this weekend. We wish the team good luck!

Girls and boys indoor soccer practices started this week.

Our school is collecting used batteries until April 29 as part of the Ecokids Battery Contest. All batteries can be placed in boxes that are located outside the office.

Our student reporters in the media centre this week are Ryan Miller, Maria Reynolds, Italo Xavier, Katherine Noel, and Jacob Cull.

We would like to thank Mr. Jim Barry for his donation of a homemade bench for our school playground.

We would like to offer our condolences to the family members of Father Grace. Father Grace passed away during the Easter holiday.

We would like to send our condolences to the George Family on the passing of Carl George, brother-in-law to Mrs. George.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Carly Johannsen who was a winner in the Corner Brook Plaza Easter Colouring Contest. Carly received a $100 Plaza gift card.

Congratulations to Brady Greene who received his level 1 swimming badge.

Congratulations to Emma and Ivor Cook on the birth of their new baby brother, Isaac.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are happy to be back in their classroom this week and see all their friends and teachers. They are learning about the letter “m”.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is excited to be back after Easter Break. They are learning the letter “x” and working on ways to make 10 in math.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is excited to be back to school and see all their friends. They created a class slogan for the Ecokids battery contest.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is excited to be back after the Easter holiday. The class is working on a unit in geometry and comparing solids.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class was excited to come back to school to find that the Easter Bunny visited their classroom! The eggs they won were used in math class before they shared them out and ate them. The class is collecting some of their old books to have a used book sale. They are raising money to help a community in a less fortunate country. This week they focused on spring activities.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is excited to be back to school after the Easter break. The students are hard at work in their classroom learning new math. They really enjoyed throwing pie’s at the teachers before Easter break to celebrate Pi Day.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is wrapping up their unit on fractions with in class learning centres. The grade three students are learning about homophones and the grade four and five students are learning about expressions of opinions in French.

Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four class is happy to be back to see their friends after their Easter vacation. The grade three students are doing a writing piece on their dream vacation. In social studies, they are working on group projects on various countries. The grade four students are beginning decimals in math class. In social studies they are beginning their heritage fair projects.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class created a slogan for a school contest about recycling batteries this week. They are also making artwork to promote recycling batteries. The grade five students imagined what it would be like to win a ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The grade six students are preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class are on stage this weekend at the Western Region Drama Festival. The group is performing a comedy about students learning how to drive. It’s called “You’re Driving Me Crazy”. The group performs on Saturday night at Elwood High School. Break a leg! The Level I Girl’s Basketball team is playing in the provincial tournament this weekend in Stephenville. Good luck, girls!
