Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (8/12/17)

Immaculate Heart of Mary students are beginning to get excited about Christmas. This week Mrs. George’s class lit the first candle of Advent in chapel. On Thursday Santa Claus visited our school this week to take class photos!
Volleyball practice began this week in our school gym.
Our Brazilian ensemble played at a meditation retreat on Sunday evening in Pasadena. The students played contemporary songs and Christmas carols.
Our school will host a live and silent auction on Saturday night. The doors open at 6:30 with auctions starting at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5.
Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. We are celebrating with a special presentation by the prayer group at All Hallows.
The Student Leadership Council prepared a video quiz on the 12 Days of Christmas. All classes are watching a daily video clip from popular Christmas movies. The challenge is to identify all the movies for a prize at the end.
We are continuing our collections for stockings for seniors, the allergy friendly food drive, and the Firefighters’ toy drive. All donations are greatly appreciated.
We would like to extend best wishes to Luke Coleman and Max Pittman who are travelling with the Provincial Boys’ Choir to Germany this week. They will have a busy 10 days of performances. Have a great trip!

Congratulations to Allie Lovell and Lily Smallwood who performed in St. John’s last weekend with the Provincial Girls’ Choir.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the true meaning of Christmas and the birth of Jesus.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class transplanted their Little Green Thumbs Garden this week. They are working on the letter “p”. They were excited to see Santa visit their school on Thursday.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning all about Advent. They wrote friendly letters to Santa. Their classroom elf, Chippy, has come back again this year to make sure everyone is being the best they can be.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is excited to light the second candle of Advent next week. They are doing Christmas activities and are counting down the days to Christmas.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class was excited to see Santa this week. They are learning about the importance of giving during Christmas.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is excited to begin their new partnership with the NL SPCA West. As part of their French Enrichment program, they are organizing a French Shelter Buddies Program. The students visited the animals this week to read to them in French.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has begun a new science unit on invisible forces. Students have started an exploration called “hopper popper” where they explore forces all around us.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is learning about analyzing as a language arts strategy. They read an interesting book about Orca whales.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class has started their STEM activities this week. They are really enjoying their novel study on Number the Stars.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class had a race on Wednesday to see who was the “fastest kid in the sixth grade” as part of their novel study on Bridge to Terabithia. Rosemary was the winner of the race!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has started a new unit on data management. They are exploring Christmas traditions around the world.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class would like to thank the Walsh family for donating a tree to their classroom. Students learned about creating a personal budget and budgeting for the future this week. They also took part in the student budget consultation for the upcoming federal budget.
Coming Up
Next Wednesday IHMS will host the annual School Scripps Spelling Bee. The Bee will begin at 1:15 in the school gym.
Our school will go skating on Tuesday, December 19. Following skating we will have a Christmas social in the gym at 11 am.

Our last day of school before Christmas will be Wednesday, December 20. We will finish the afternoon with a variety show at 1:00 pm.
Mrs. George's grade one class lit the first candle on the Advent wreath on Monday. Jaxon Clarke dressed up as Joseph, Carrie Hoskins dressed up as Mary, and Rhylan Hodder carried the star.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (25/11/17)

Grade six students, Keira Clarke, Rebecca Janes, and Reyd Ward, participated in the YMCA’s annual David Elliott Memorial Peace Week Speak Off on Tuesday evening. The theme for peace week is “Build Community. Act for Peace”. Congratulations to all the participants on an excellent presentation.
Kate Murphy and Nikola Verbiski set up their business, K & N’s DIY Co., in the main lobby on Wednesday. The girls sold book marks, slime, notebooks, and cards. The business venture was a hit. They sold items during both recess and lunch. The girls sold $200 in products. They will donate 50% of the profit to a family in need.
The grade six to Level 3 students are in St. John’s this weekend to participate in the Provincial Intermediate Skills Challenge. We have teams participating in robotics, graphic design, 2D animation, photography, and wind turbine. Good luck, everyone!

Congratulations to Willow Boland who received a certificate for awesome respect in Tae Kwon Do this past week.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are busy preparing for the Christmas concert and beginning Christmas crafts this week.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about the needs of living things. They have been begun their Little Green Thumbs journaling.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is working hard to practice for their Christmas concert next week. They are doing addition stories in math class. With the help of the entire school, they filled 83 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Thank you, everyone!
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is working hard to learn their two French songs for the Christmas concert next week. The song “d’ou viens tu?” has been a great introduction to the Christmas season. In art they worked on snow covered trees. This project was inspired by the first snow fall.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is beginning Christmas activities and preparing for the Christmas concert.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class has officially started their Christmas writing project. The grade three and four students are writing narratives about Santa going missing, while the grade five and six students are writing an opinion essay  about the most desirable elf positions at the North Pole.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is investigating how rare types of trees local only to Hawaii are being found all over the world. The students are excited to be practicing for the Christmas concert.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is finished writing their class story. They have made a good copy and illustrated photos. The class will share their story with Mrs. George’s grade one class.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class started their STEM Lego builds this week. The students are excited to begin learning about simple machines.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class participated in the YMCA Peace Week Speak Off on Tuesday evening. Keira Clarke, Rebecca Janes, and Reyd Ward represented their class at this event. The robotics team is in St. John’s this week competing in the Provincial First Lego League Robotics Competition.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is excited to participate in the Provincial Intermediate Skills Challenge this weekend in St. John’s. Good luck to all the competitors.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is in St. John’s today for the Provincial Intermediate Skills Challenge. The students are attending Mass at St. John the Baptist Basilica and then touring the House of Assembly and learning about our provincial government.
Coming Up
Report cards will go home on Monday. Parent teacher interviews will be held on Tuesday evening from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

The IHMS Christmas concert will take place on Thursday, November 30 at 7:00 pm.
