Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (20/4/18)

Our school celebrated National Talk With Our Kids About Money Day on Wednesday with classroom activities around balancing budgets, credit VS debit discussions, and talking about money values. The grade six class organized a school wide Talk With Our Kids About Money Expo on Thursday with stations in the gym for classes to take part in activities about money.

Mr. Adam Kennedy presented a session on Search and Rescue for the grade five and six students last Friday afternoon.

Our grades 5-7 students took part in a Junior Achievement program with Mr. Kevin Young last week.  

Our School greenhouse is coming to life! Our classes have been busy planting and preparing for another season on growing.

IHMS is hosting the Grade Five Boys’ Soccer Tournament this weekend. The first game is Friday at 3 pm.

The Junior High and Senior High students are performing their drama production in Springdale on Saturday. The first performance for the group is 2 pm at Indian River High School.

Our students in kindergarten to grade six submitted their Kids In Charge (K-I-C) energy project submissions this week.

We are still collecting plastic bags for the Grab Bag Challenge. This will conclude on April 26th. The Recycle My Cell Campaign will conclude on April 30th.

Apple A Day Tickets are now on sale! Tickets are $20 each. There are five days of prize draws and each ticket is entered in all five draws. Prizes include: an apple TV, apple watch, an iphone 8, an ipad, and a 13inch Macbook air. There are also prizes for the seller of each winning ticket, and there will be an ipad draw for students selling more than 20 tickets. For every 20 tickets sold, the student will have his or her name entered in the draw. The draws begin on May 7th.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Carter Bromley who was awarded the Atom Hockey Player of the Year Award at their year end banquet.

Congratulations to Brooke Watton who cut off her hair last week to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Congratulations to Keira Clarke and Max Pittman who performed with the Jorgën Ballet on Wednesday night in their performance of Anastasia.

Congratulations to Daley Merrigan and Graham Zilkowsky who competed in the NL Provincial Ski Races in St. Anthony. Daley was first place in the 5 km classic and first place in the 5 km free technique. He was also the second fastest overall across all age groups.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are exploring their five senses and doing fun activities. They are enjoying the outdoor play space.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about money. They really enjoyed the money expo on Thursday. They had a lot of fun in the greenhouse this week with Ms. Galliott.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is really enjoying their research unit on penguins. They are learning about symbols, legends, and directions on maps in social studies. Rhylan is the star of the week!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class has been having a lot of fun exploring measurement. The grade two students are estimating and finding measurements of various objects using non-standard units of measurement. The grade one students are exploring mass by comparing and weighing items in the classroom.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is very excited about their new unit on matter in science class. They really enjoyed the money expo and love counting coins using skip counting in math.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is learning about balancing budgets as part of the Talk With Our Kids About Money initiative. They are excited to start their fundraiser for their aquaponics project.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has created their own class museum to display artifacts from the past to compare them to their modern day equivalent.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is working hard on their heritage fair projects. They are finishing their fraction and decimal unit in math.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class enjoyed their presentation with Mr. Kennedy last week on Search and Rescue. They have been busy all week preparing for the Heritage Fair.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is preparing for the Heritage Fair. The class was really excited to host the Talk with Our Kids About Money Day Expo in our school gym on Thursday.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is putting the finishing touches on their drama production for this weekend. The group will present their play in Springdale on Saturday. The grade seven and eight students are working on a NHL probability unit in math.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is continuing their construction of the Remote Operated Vehicles and beginning to develop their company profile. The Biology 2201 students had a test this week on the respiratory system.

Coming Up

Our school Heritage Fair is Wednesday, April 25.

Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten Orientation Sessions is on Thursday, April 26th at 7:00 pm in our school cafeteria.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (13/4/18)

We would like to welcome everyone back from the Easter holidays. The Prayer Group held a special celebration of the Divine Mercy on Sunday in our school chapel.

April is a big month for recycling at IHMS. We are continuing or Plastic Grab Bag Challenge and working on the Recycle My Cell Campaign. We are asking our families to collect plastic bags, old cell phones, pdas, and pagers for these initiatives.

The school greenhouse has been cleaned and prepared for the upcoming season by Ms. Jessica Galliot. Ms. Galliot will be working with classes throughout the spring in the greenhouse.

IHMS was deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred resulting in the deaths of hockey players on the Humboldt Broncos team. On Thursday we joined other schools across the country to wear hockey jerseys and place sticks outside our door. We also collected money for the families and surviving players.  

Our grades 4 to 9 students have been busy preparing for the school heritage fair scheduled for the end of this month. The theme of the fair is “Lessons From Our Past, Shaping Our Future”.

We would like to welcome to our staff Ms. Chelsey Curl who is working as an assistant in the office and Ms. Ingrid Watkins who is operating the cafeteria.

Soccer season is in full swing as we prepare for the upcoming tournaments for grade five boys to be held at our school April 20-21. The girls’ grade six soccer team is preparing for their tournament on May 5-6.

We would like to wish one of our grandmothers, Mrs. Rebecca Parsons, a happy birthday on Saturday. She will be celebrating a special birthday.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Carter Bromley and Noah Colbourne, members of the Atom A hockey team, who participated in the provincial competition in St. John’s last weekend.  The team played well, but lost in the bronze medal game.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are welcoming to their class Ian Cook this week. They are having a fun week with blockplay and outside play.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about spring and new life in science. They are continuing to learn about time in math and are being introduced to money.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is very happy to see all their friends again. They all had a terrific Easter break. They are very excited to start their penguin unit this week.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class was happy to see their friends after the Easter break. They began the week by discussing sings of spring and active wild life. The students are excited to continue this into the spring in the outdoor classroom and the greenhouse.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is excited to be back to school. They have counted over 9,000 bags for the Plastic Grab Bag Challenge. Please remember to keep bringing them in! They are starting a new unit in science called, “Matter, Matter, Everywhere”. There is so much to learn!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is eagerly working on their Heritage Fair projects. They are also excited to be learning about fractions in math.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class finished off their Green Garden Reports this week. The class is actively watching their worm farm which has now moved up to the second level.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is enthusiastically working on a skit and video as a class project. They worked hard all week practicing their fractions in math.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is busy preparing for the upcoming Heritage Fair. The students are researching and collecting information to be included in a report for the fair. They are excited to be reading the Roald Dahl book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in language arts.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is continuing their novel study on the book “Holes”. They are excited to be organizing a school event for National Talk With Our Kids About Money Day next week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is looking forward to the re-scheduled drama festival on April 20-21. The students will perform on April 21. They have begun preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge in May. The class completed their poetry unit with a test today.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is preparing for the Underwater Robotics competition. The students are planning their ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) and business plan. Science 1206 students are beginning to learn about acceleration.

The Regional Drama Festival school performances are on April 21 in Springdale.

The Let’s Talk Science competition n St. John’s is on Thursday, May 3.

The Underwater Robotics Competition in St. John’s is on Friday, May 4.

This week we launched the annual Apple-A-Day fundraiser. Tickets are on sale for $20 each. There are five days of prize draws and each ticket is entered in all five draws. There are also prizes for the seller of each winning ticket, and there will be an ipad draw for students selling more than 20 tickets. This week was Canadian Agricultural Literacy Week. We had representatives from Rideout’s Farm, Robin’s Farm and the Department of Agriculture visit our classes to read books to our kindergarten to grade six students. A chicken named Mindy and a rooster named Igor also visited from Robin’s Farm.

The student leadership council organized an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt for our classes on Thursday. The treat at the end was a basket of chocolate Easter eggs.

School officially closes for Easter on Thursday, March 29 and will re-open on Monday, April 9th.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Mark Janes received two silver medals for sparring in Tae Kwon Do, Israela Ngania who received a gold medal in Sparring and in Form (Belt Category), Lsea Ngania who received a silver medal in Form (Belt Category), Madeline Murphy who received gold in Sparring (Belt Category).

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes enjoyed the visit from the Department of Agriculture on Monday. The students are making Easter crafts and enjoying the spring temperatures.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class added a new try to their vermin-composting and are anxiously waiting for the worms to migrate to the new level. On Monday the students had Mrs. Karen Kennedy from the Department of Agriculture read to their class for Candian Agricultural Literacy Week.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a visit from Mrs. Crystal Baggs Anderson on behalf of the Department of Agriculture for Agricultural Literacy Week.  The students enjoyed their Easter centers and activities this week. They are learning about the true meaning of Easter in Religion class. They would like to wish our readers a happy Easter and a wonderful spring!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class had a great week. The students are excited for the Easter break. They had so much fun with their Easter centres. This week they learned a lot about bees and why the Newfoundland Bee population is so special. They also discussed worms and the important part they have in food production.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class really enjoyed meeting Igor the rooster and Mindy the chicken on Monday. They learned about agriculture, specifically about the farms we have right here in Newfoundland and Labrador. It was exciting listening to Igor “Cock-a-doodle-do”.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working hard on their KIC energy project. They are excited for the Easter break.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is excited to start the Apple A Day fundraiser. They are eager to sell their tickets and get entered for the seller’s prizes! The students are looking forward to the Easter break.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is enjoying talking about candy pizza in math. They are making felt eggs for Easter. They are excited about taping their KIC Start video.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is excited to build cardboard sleds for the Marble Mountain Cardboard box races over Easter. They are finishing off their cause and effect report writing.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is started their new novel study on the book Hole by Louis Sacher. They are looking forward to the Easter break.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class had a math test on fractions on Wednesday. The students are preparing for the Marble Mountain Cardboard Sled Races.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is beginning their ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) designs. History 1201 students are learning about WWII. Science 1206 students are studying distance / time graphs.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (24/3/18)

On Monday, IHMS celebrated St. Patrick’s Theme Day. Many of our classes came back to school to discover that the leprechaun had visited their class and narrowly escaped some of their inventive traps.

Thursday was World Water Day. This is a special day to educate and think about our impact on the world’s water source. Please remember to turn off your taps while brushing your teeth and do your part to conserve water.

We also celebrated National Poetry Day on Thursday. Classes read and shared special poems. The grade nine to twelve students reflected on their favourite poems and created new poems with lines from their favourite poems. Lauren Green read a poem for the school in chapel.

The junior and senior high classes were disappointed that the Regional Drama Festival was postponed because of poor weather in Newfoundland. The festival is rescheduled for April 19-21.

The grades 5 to 8 classes have begun a program with Junior Achievement. The students will take part in four different sessions in the coming weeks.

Our Plastic Grab Bag Challenge is now in full swing. The grade two class has collected 6,000 bags and counting. Please bring in your plastic bags. These should be recycled and not sent to our landfills.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes set traps late last week for the leprechaun, but they did not catch him. He left them a treasure hunt and they found gold. The classes welcomed three Early Childhood Education students, Alexis Taylor, Jade Raymond and Samantha Neil, to their classes this week. The students are doing a five week placement.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was happy to have a visit from the leprechaun who left them treats even though they did not catch him. They are continuing to learn parts of the clock and time to the hour. They enjoyed celebrating World Water Day this week.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had fun constructing leprechaun traps! They didn’t catch one, but he did leave them with some chocolate and lucky coins. They are doing some writing about spring this week.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class was happy to welcome spring this week. They are surprised to see that none of their leprechaun traps were successful. They drew Easter bunny pictures in their art class and began discussing Easter. They have been talking about the changes that take place in spring.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is well underway with their Plastic Grab Bag Challenge. They have counted over 6,000 bags! They are very excited about spring and are looking forward to the season changing. Please remember to collect plastic bags!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is doing word work with their spring vocabulary and are working hard on their Kids In Charge energy project.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is grooming their Little Green Thumbs Garden. Some of their plants are growing very quickly. They should see some beans sprouting very soon.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is continuing their novel “Slacker” in language arts. It is very exciting. They are learning fractions and decimals in math.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is finishing off their Kids In Charge (K-I-C) project and are very excited to share their ideas. In language arts they are writing a report on what they have learned about spiders.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is writing problem and solution reports. They are learning to multiply decimal numbers and are finishing off their country report in social studies.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is travelling to Springdale on Saturday for their drama production. Students had a fractions test on Thursday.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is preparing for the drama festival this weekend in Springdale. Biology 2201 students are learning about the respiratory system. The grade nine students are learning about solving equations in math.

Danyael Jacobs and Mark Janes received bronze medals in a Novice Hockey Tournament in St. John's. Mark also received an award for Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
