Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (10/4/19)

On Monday the prayer group led a special service for the May Crowing. Thank you to Mrs. Coleman and the members of the prayer group for a job well done.  We will wear blue ribbons for Mary throughout the month of May.
Golf Professional, Mr. Wayne Allen, visited our gym classes this week to introduce golf and provide lessons to our classes.
Jacob Cull won the City of Corner Brook Mayor For A Day Contest. Leah Lainey, Kate Murphy, and Brooke Watton were selected as councillors to represent our school. Jacob was officially declared Mayor in a special assembly in our school on Wednesday morning. Following the assembly he was escorted to City Hall in a fire truck. Mayor Cull and our councillors participated in a mock city council meeting that evening.
Congratulations to our grade six boys indoor soccer team who went undefeated last weekend and won gold! Thank you to our coaches Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Ryley Nadon for their dedication to the team. Thank you to our many parents and volunteers who worked so hard during the tournament.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class participated in a calendar poster contest for the Epilepsy Association. Heidi Payne’s poster was selected to be features in the 2019-2020 calendar.
We would like to wish good luck to the grade six girls’ soccer team who are participating in a tournament this weekend.
We would like to thank everyone who supported our Apple A Day fundraiser! The last draw took place on Friday.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are enjoying some outside play this week. They are making special gifts for their moms for Mother’s Day.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class has begun a new theme on weather. The children have new words this week as well. The words they are studying a getting longer and longer.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is busy making Mother’s Day surprises this week. They are enjoying learning different strategies when adding and subtracting. They would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all their moms.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is working on Mother’s Day surprises...shh! They have also been working on a class book about the things that make them unique.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They are working on a special Robert Munsh creative writing project. In math they are working on geometry.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is working on a cinquain, a non traditional poetry style. They are also learning the future proche and adverbs of time that require future tense. In math, the students are finishing their units on multiplication and division.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned vocabulary for family members in French. In social studies, students discussed ways to be a good citizen. Students also had fun completing posters for a salmon conservation contest.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class is soon beginning division in math. They are working hard on their novel studies. They would like to congratulate the members of the grade six boys soccer team on their win this weekend!
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is very proud of the work they did on their Kids in Charge Energy Contest. In language arts they are reading a book about spiders and discovering many new things they did not already know.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is reading a book called “Caring for Cheetahs”. They finished their Friends for Life Program this week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is continuing to work on literature circles in language arts. They competed their Kids In Charge Energy Savings projects this week.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class had an awesome trip to the MATE ROV Underwater Robotics Competition in St. John’s last week.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (3/5/19)

The official cast for the school musical of the Lion King has been selected. Rehearsals started this week. It is going to be a great show!
The grade six to eight students took part in the annual Let’s Talk Science Challenge at Grenfell Campus on Thursday. We would like to congratulate Mohamed Al-Zubaidy, Fatima Alkahlil,Carly Johannesen, and Reyd Ward who placed first overall in the competition.  
This week we held our annual Heritage Fair. We would like to congratulate all the students on their wonderful projects. We would like to thank Mr. Ryley Nadon, Mr. Drew Nadon, Mrs. Marie Ryan, Mme. Erin Ryan, Mrs. Hinks, Mr. Adam Kennedy, and Mrs. McCarthy who judged the competition.  Medals were awarded to Jack Watton, James Lao, Ava Hodder, Luke Coleman, Lily Smallwood, Kate Murphy, Noah Colbourne, Erica Kennedy, Candace Johannesen, Brooke Watton, Gabriel Rowsell, Fatima Alkahalil, Carly Johannesen, and Rebecca Janes. Honourable mentions were also awarded to Grace Brake Higgins, Sommer Lawrence, Oscar George, Leah Lainey, Molly George, and Reyd Ward.
The senior high students travelled to St. John’s on Thursday for the MATE ROV Underwater Robotics competition.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes really enjoyed the Easter break, but are glad to be back with their classmates.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class really enjoyed the Talk With Our Kids About Money Day activities before Easter.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about tools and simple machines in science class. They are using adding and subtracting in math. They are also learning about aboriginal people and their past and present in social studies.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class really enjoyed seeing the school heritage fair projects on Tuesday afternoon.  The students were excited to be back from Easter break and see their classmates again.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about similarities and differences between animals.  They are looking at natural and physical changes in science class. In math they are working on missing numbers in addition and subtraction.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class was very excited to participate in the Heritage Fair. It was the grade four student’s first time completing a Heritage Fair Project. They did a great job! The class was excited to celebrate Robert’s birthday on Wednesday. In French, all classes did activities on money and finances. They also wrote cinquain poems about spring. All classes are preparing for their unit test.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned about the ways we can protect the oceans and completed posters for a “Keep Oceans Blue” poster contest. In language arts class they finished their novel study on Pippi Longstocking. They then compared the book to the movie.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class is preparing for a multiplication test. They began a new novel study in language class. They learned a lot from the heritage fair projects and are working on group posters in social studies class.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class really enjoyed taking part in the school heritage fair. It was interesting to see all the different projects their classmates were working on.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is working hard on preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and writing essays about what they would do if they were mayor of the city of Corner Brook for one day.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is taking part in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge this week. They are also  working in small literature circle groups in language arts.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is working on research writing papers in language arts. The senior high students are travelling to St. John’s for the MATE ROV Underwater Robotics Competition on Friday.

The May Crowing of Mary will take place on Monday with the prayer group.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (18/4/19)

The junior and senior high school students presented their drama production of “Gossip” in Rocky Harbour last Friday evening. The cast members included: Fatima Alkhalil, Cheyenne Bursey, Jenna Cammie, Keira Clarke, I.J. Felipe, Rebecca Janes, Carly Johannesen, Kira McCarthy, Thomas Moerschell, Rosemary Owolabi, Blaire Peddle, and Reyd Ward. The show was directed by Ms. McCarthy and Ms. Alteen. With Gui Rocha operating the lights and sound for the show.
Ms. McCarthy’s grade six class organized the school’s Talk With Our Kids About Money Day activities. Students in kindergarten to grade five participated in a series of stations about earning, saving, and wisely spending money.
Ms. Coleman and the prayer group hosted the annual Easter Passion rosary and re-enactment on Tuesday afternoon at All Hallows Church.
The Vice-Principal, a teacher, and two Nalcor representatives visited our school to meet with the French Immersion classes to discuss the implementation of an intensive French program, beginning in kindergarten at their school in Churchill Falls; using our school as a model.
The Student Leadership Council hosted an Easter Egg Hunt on the last day of school for all classes.
Our elementary chess team consisting of Jacob Cull, Uriah Cull, Liam Gaulton, Candace Johannesen, and Jack Watton were bronze medalists at the team event in St. John’s this past weekend. Adam Thomas, a grade two French Immersion student, participated individually and received a medal, and to Israela Ngania who received an honourable mention.  We would like to thank Mrs. Cheryl Cull who organized the trip and all the parents for attending.
School closes on Thursday afternoon for Easter break. We will re-open again on Monday, April 29th.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to our students who participated in the annual Silver Blades Ice Show last weekend. Our students included: Imogen Ash, Katie Brake, Alexis Caines, Leah Caines, Jenna Cammie, Kaia Foley, Rebecca Janes, Sarah Ketcha, Leah Lainey, Isralea Ngania, Lysea Njinang, Lexi Pilgrim, Ryder Parsons, Anna Sheppard, and Lexi Wight.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about Easter this week. They are looking forward to the Easter break.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning about eggs and which animals lay eggs. They have learned how to weave a paper egg as well.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning all about Holy Week. They are learning about some Easter poems. They are identifying characteristics of human and animal houses in science. Happy birthday to Owen who turned 7! They would like to wish a happy Easter to all our readers.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class has completed their study of maple syrup in Québec. They have been working on some Easter writing and artwork.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is finished their study on supply and demand in social studies. The students are looking forward to their Easter break.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class would like to congratulate Candace and her chess team who won bronze last weekend in St. John’s. The grade four students are working on multiplication in math, while the grade five and six are working on long division. They would like to wish everyone a Joyeuses Pâques! The class would like to wish Candace a very happy birthday!
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned how to make their own magnetic compasses in science. They learned that a compass always points to the Earth’s magnetic North Pole. In social studies, they learned the difference between laws and rules. They also discussed the importance of having laws and how they keep us safe.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class is learning about salmon conservation and restoring our oceans. They are excited to begin their Easter break.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is excited to present their heritage fair projects when they return from the easter break. They have enjoyed learning about climate and climate change in science.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class was excited to plan the Talk With Our Kids About Money Day activities for the kindergarten to grade five students this week. They learned a lot about money management and were excited to share it with everyone.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is excited about the Easter Break and preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is preparing for the Underwater Robotics event in St. John’s in May. Canadian studies students are continuing to learn about World War 2.
Coming Up
School will re-open on Monday, April 29th.

The school Heritage fair public viewing will be Tuesday, April 30 beginning at 1:15 pm.
