Last week our students enjoyed an awesome
concert with ECMA winners Donna and Andy. The interactive show was a hit with
all the students.
Maria Reynolds and Emily O’Bryan attended a
leadership conference in St. John’s last weekend.
The grade six to level two students held a
leaf raking fundraiser for their trip to the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The
students have been busy preparing for First Lego League Robotics, Wind Turbine,
TV Video Production and Graphic Design. The team would like to thank Mr. Scott
Reynolds who volunteered last week to work with the Graphics Design team.
Mr. Drew’s grade seven to level two class
organized our annual Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday. The assembly featured the school band and
chamber choir, with the each class presenting a poem, song, or presentation
about remembrance. We would like to thank Sergeant Katie Thistle who played
“The Last Post” and Chief Warrant Officer Emily McLeod who paraded the Canadian
Flag during the assembly. Our school was visited by Legionnaires Mr. Sam Greene
and Mr. Paul Gillingham and veterans Master Corporal Jason Cull (retired) and
Lieutenant (Navy) Cheryl Cull (retired). The Cull family laid a wreath in
Remembrance during the ceremony.
Our school will be hosting the provincial
chess tournament this year. On Tuesday, our chess club was visited by Mr.
Cameron Locke, chess master.
We would like to thank Ms. Kayla Park for the
work she did with our junior kindergarten students. Ms. Park finished her
placement this week.
We would like to thank Ms.
Charlene Lovell who volunteered at the Breakfast Program this past week.
The Recycle My Cell Campaign continues this
week. We are collecting used and broken cell phones.
We are once again having an Apple-A -Day
fundraiser. The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program.
Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The five days of draws will begin in
January 11 and conclude on January 15th. Prizes include: a 16GB IPod
touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad Air and Apple TV,
and an 11inch MacBook Air 2.
The grade one English and grade one and two
French Immersion classes are organizing Operation Christmas Child again this
year. Last year they filled 66 show boxes for children in developing countries.
This year they hope to fill even more. They are looking for donations of small
toys, pencils, sharpeners, tooth brushes, face cloths and other items to pack
in the shoe boxes for this program.

The junior kindergarten classes are learning
about the letter “A”. The children enjoyed singing in the Remembrance Day
assembly on Tuesday.
Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion
class performed the poem "Coquelicot" at the school Remembrance Day
assembly on Tuesday. They made poppies to accompany their poem. This week they
learned the letter “L” and are now able to read three French words! In science
they are continuing to learn about living things, and what they need to grow.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is
working on needs and wants in social studies class. They are practicing the
letter “F”. The class was excited to take part in the Remembrance Day assembly
on Tuesday morning.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has
started a new unit in math on adding and subtracting up to 12. They have also
started a new science unit and are studying the five senses. They made
beautiful paintings in honor of Remembrance Day.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class learned
more about the importance of Remembrance Day this week when Uriah’s mom and
dad, who are veterans, came to speak with the class! This week in social
studies they learned about rights and responsibilities. In math they learned
about one and two more; and one and two less. The star of the week is Katie.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is observing air
conditions in science. They have
been practicing for the Remembrance Day poem for the school assembly and are also learning about least
and greatest in math.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion
class have busy with an author study on Norman Bridwell. They were busy
preparing for the Remembrance Day ceremony this week.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French
Immersion class presented the poem “In Flanders Fields” in French at the
Remembrance Day assembly on Tuesday. On Thursday the grade four students teamed
up with the grade four English students for a field trip to Atlantic Minerals
on the Port Aux Port peninsula to investigate the mining process.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class both finished
their numeration units in math. They read the poem “In Flanders Fields” at the
Remembrance Day assembly. They had a guest speaker join their class to talk
about his experience as a member of the Canadian Military and his family’s history
with the military. They all learned a lot of information and got to see some
interesting memorabilia!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was
excited to play with the older students as part of the school band for the
assembly. The grade five students lit candles for peace at the school’s annual
Remembrance Day Assembly. The students are finishing up their math units this
week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class
enjoyed organizing the Remembrance Day assembly. For many students it was their
first Remembrance Day service. The level one and two students finished up their
language arts novel studies this week. In religion, the class has been
reviewing the celebration of Mass in the Catholic faith.
