Our students from kindergarten to level two were off school on Monday for a teacher professional development day. The teachers took part in sessions on Mindfulness with Dr. Kate Laferty, Dr. Erin Smallwood, Family Physicians with Western Health; and Dr. Michael Newton, Professor with Memorial University, Grenfell Campus.  In the afternoon teachers explored educational applications for Ipad with Mme. Foley and took part in departmental meetings.

On Tuesday, Mrs. George’s grade one class lit the first candle on the Advent Wreath to begin our season of Advent. Also, on Tuesday, in observance of a day of remembrance for veterans, Simon Boitsefski sang “O’Canada” in our two official languages.

Congratulations to our Intermediate Skills Challenge Team on a great performance last weekend! We would like to thank all the community and businesses that supported our team and made donations of their money, time and talents. We would like to thank Mr. Jason King, Chief Administrative Officer of Western Regional Waste Management, who met with our robotics team to discuss their project and to Mr. Scott Reynolds who worked with our graphic design team.

Congratulations to our LEGO Robotics team consisting of Makenzy Bishop, Myles Calbert, Rebekah Calbert, Jose Garcia, Max Chrappa, Ryan Bennett, Cole Dumaresque, Emily Murley, Kori Noel, and Ryan Miller who won third place in the Trash Trek Project category.

Congratulations to our LEGO Robotics Demonstration team consisting of Maria Luisa Dias, Maria Reynolds, Genesio DeLima, Lucas Lisboa, Emily O’Bryan, Nico Hermillio, Maria Jessica DeAlmeida, Maria Roseli DeLima, Thiago Pereira who received  the award “Against All Odds” which was for the team who had the greatest challenge in attending the competition.

Congratulations to Anna MacKenzie and Madison Noel who won gold medals in the Wind Turbine Challenge.

Last Sunday was our second week of Chase the Ace. This fundraiser is in conjunction with the SPCA. Mrs. Marjorie Deckert won $250. Thank you to Angela Brown, Lisa and Alma Clarke for providing the entertainment for this event. We will continue to “Chase the Ace” this Sunday night from 6:30-8:30 pm. Tickets are 3 for $5. This event will feature a “Dog Show and More Show”. Pet registration begins at 6 pm with a cost of $5 per pet.

 

The Student Leadership Council is collecting items for Stockings for Seniors, the Fire Fighter’s Toy Drive and the Food Bank Christmas Food Drive..  



Congratulations to Colin Spencer who received a gold medal in the Royal Conservatory Level 2 for 2014-2015. Colin travelled to Nova Scotia last week to receive his award.

Congratulations to Caleb Rashleigh’s team who won medals in the Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Atom House League Hockey Tournament in Corner Brook over the weekend.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are doing some Christmas crafts and decorating the classroom. All the children are excited and looking forward to the Christmas concert. One of the students had a birthday party over the weekend where the parents donated money to the Ronald MacDonald house in lieu of presents. The total raised was $500.00.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning new sight words for December. They are learning the letter “t” in language and about the numbers that come before and after in math. They have an elf visiting their classroom. They named their elf “Neige”. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about more, fewer and same in math. In language arts they are working on the letter “x”.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is practicing the song “O Come Divine Messiah” in French to prepare for the lighting of the third Advent candle. The class is looking forward to the skating party on December 15^th. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class was very excited to light the first candle on the Advent wreath on Monday. This week they are writing friendly letters to Santa. They read the story stone soup, a beautiful story about cooperation and trust. They made their own stone soup yesterday. It was delicious!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is conducting mini research on a Canadian animal in language arts. They are starting Christmas crafts this week. They are looking forward to visiting and giving their Christmas cards to seniors at the Long Term Care Centre today!

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has been busy practicing for the Christmas concert and making props. They are doing a lot of drills to learn addition and subtraction facts. They are learning about place value and the relationship between addition and subtraction. They are getting very excited for Christmas!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class are doing some Christmas writing activities in French. They will be choosing their own elf names to base their writing on! Congratulations to grade four students, Caleb Rashleigh and Isabelle Mercier, and grade five students, Simon Boitsefksi and Carly Johannesen, who were chosen for the school Scripps Spelling Bee next week.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is going to the Long Term Care Centre today to deliver Christmas cards with Ms. Park’s grade two class. They are very excited to deliver their handmade cards. The grade three and four students have started subtraction in Math. The class would like to congratulate Reyd Ward and Natalie Parsons who were chosen for the school Scipps Spelling Bee next Monday afternoon.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class would like to congratulate Isaac Buckingham, Clare Coleman, Aria Kazerouni , Arabella LeBlanc, Colin Spencer, and Aaron White and who were chosen for the school Scipps Spelling Bee on Monday.  The grade six students are continuing their reading of the novel “Raven Quest”. It is very suspenseful! The students are working on making and checking predictions.

 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class had an excellent trip to St. John’s for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The students participated in a workshop at the MUN Mineral Lab, toured the Basilica, visited Signal Hill, rock climbed at Axtion and went swimming at the MUN Aqua Arena.

Santa Claus is visiting our school for photos on Monday.

The IHMS Scripps Spelling Bee is being held on Monday at 1:00 pm for selected students in grades four to eight. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.

The IHMS annual Christmas concert “The Bells of Christmas” is on December 10^th at 7 pm..

The Student Leadership Council hosted a “Moustaches for Movember” fundraiser on Monday. Students wore mustaches and donated one dollar for men’s cancer.

Grade three student, Katherine Noel, working on her artwork for the class project "Leaves of Fall". The students presented their poetry and artwork at the Corner Brook public library on Wednesday evening. 

 

The grade one English and French Immersion classes are happy to announce that they filled 119 boxes for Operation Christmas Child with the help from all the wonderful IHMS families. Thank you for your generous donations!

On Wednesday, our grade three students presented their artwork and poetry “Leaves of Fall” at a public reading at the Corner Brook Public Library. The students learned about tree identification and types of leaves in science. Next, they went on a field trip to Margret Bowater Park where the children, lead by artist Jane Reagh, used water colour pencils and square crayons to make leaf and bark drawings. To incorporate language arts into the project, the students wrote poems about fall trees.  These activities culminated in the creation of a book of autumn art and poetry. This project was funded by ArtsSmarts NL as part of a larger school project called “Experiencing the Ecosystem”.

In physical education the students are going to be starting a mini unit on hockey. Mr. Ryley is happy to report that plans are underway for our rock climbing wall in the gym!

The grade kindergarten to grade four students participated in “Learn Not to Burn” sessions on Wednesday with retired Firefighter, Mr. Tom Yetman, a fire safety education officer on Wednesday.

The Apple A Day fundraiser is underway. Don’t foget to buy your tickers! The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program. Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The five days of draws will begin in January 11 and conclude on January 15^th. Prizes include: a 16GB IPod touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB  IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad Air and Apple TV, and an 11inch MacBook Air 2.

Our school hosted the first “Chase the Ace” fundraiser on Sunday evening. We would like to thank the band, Second Wind, for providing the entertainment. This week’s winner of $250 was Mr. Greg Barnes. He pulled the ten of clubs. Our “Chase the Ace” runs every Sunday night from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  



Congratulations to Mme. Corinne Brett and her husband, Brian, who welcomed their son, Finley Orson Brett, on November 7.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are really enjoying learning Christmas songs in music class. Next week they are starting Christmas crafts. The children are getting very excited!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class really enjoyed the Learn not to Burn session on Wednesday. The students are busy learning the French song for the Christmas Concert.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is excited to announce that some of their seeds from their Little Green Thumbs garden have begun to sprout. They have started a new unit on exploring numbers in math.  

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is busy learning their French selections for the Christmas concert this week. They are starting subtraction and having fun playing math games. In art they made snowy houses, even though wintery weather is not here yet. In science, they are learning about their sense of touch and how it helps them in their daily lives.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing addition stories in math and learning about needs and wants in social studies. The star of the week is Liam Gaulton.

Ms. Park’s grade two class has started a new chapter in math this week. The students are learning to add and subtract up to 18. In language arts, they are having fun practicing their spelling on the school’s Ipads.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has been busy learning math facts to 18. They have been writing their own “Bertrand” stories based on Norma Bridwell’s Clifford books.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class is learning about soil in science. They are learning about bullying this week and different ways we can help stop bullying.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class planted their “Little Green Thumbs” garden this week. They are excited to watch their veggies grow. The grade four students would like to congratulate the grade three students on their poetry and art show at the Corner Brook Public Library on Wednesday night.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class participated in the classroom spelling bee for the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday. The grade five students are writing Christmas stories to read to the younger students. The grade six students are attending the Intermediate Skills Challenge this weekend as part of the First Lego League Robotics team. Good luck!
 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class is in St. John’s today! The students are doing a workshop at the MUN Biology lab, taking a tour of the Basilica and going rock climbing at Axtion. Tomorrow is the Intermediate Skills Challenge at the College of the North Atlantic.

COMING UP...

School is closed on Monday for grades kindergarten to Level two for teacher professional development. Our junior kindergarten program will operate as scheduled.

Our annual Christmas concert is on the 10^th of December at 7:00 pm. The theme this year is “The Bells of Christmas”.

On Wednesday we celebrated Mickey Mouse’s Birthday with a theme day. It was fun to see everyone dressed as their favourite Disney character.

Operation Christmas Child officially ended this week. Thank you to everyone who donated items for this cause.  The grade one English and grade one French Immersion classes are busy packing the boxes. They will give us a grand total next week.

 

Report Cards went home Wednesday and parent teacher interviews were held from seven to eight thirty pm.

Grade six students, Emily Murley and Isaac Buckingham, presented their speeches at the annual YMCA Peace Week Speak off on Thursday evening. Both students did very well.

Last week the grade four English and French Immersion students went on a field Trip to Port Aux Port mine as part of their science curriculum. The students toured the mine, learned about mine safety and identified some fossils!

We are once again having an Apple-A -Day fundraiser. The proceeds of the ticket sales are in aid of our music program. Tickets are now on sale for $20 each. The five days of draws will begin in January 11 and conclude on January 15^th. Prizes include: a 16GB IPod touch, a 16GB IPod touch and $25 ITunes card, a 16GB IPad mini 2, a 32 GB IPad Air and Apple TV, and an 11inch MacBook Air 2.

Our school is proud to partner with the SPCA in a fundraiser called “Chase the Ace”. Tickets will be available in our school gym every Sunday from 6:30-8:30 pm with the draw taking place at 8:50 pm. The minimum prize each week is $250. The event continues every Sunday until the “ace” is caught. Every week the jackpot increases! Tickets are $3 for $5. The first draw is this Sunday!

 



Congratulations to Natalie Parsons who attended a swim meet in Gander last weekend.

Congratulations to Rebekah Calbert who competed at the regional cadet biathlon competition last weekend. Rebekah’s team placed third overall and she received third place in the junior girls category.

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Dillman who won student of the month at Tae Kwon Do.

Congratulations to Ivor Cook who won a gold medal at the NL and Labrador Amateur Tae kwon Do Championships in Stephenville on Saturday in Junior Boys White Belt.

Congratulations to Noah Wall and Nicholas Mauger who won medals in Kickboxing.

Congratulations to Dru Kennedy and Candace Cunning, volunteers at our school, who were married last week. Dru is the son of staff member, Dianne Kennedy.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “a”. They are enjoying doing activities with the letter. They are enjoying spending time with the new early childhood education students from the College of the North Atlantic.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about the letter “m”. They celebrated Mickey Mouse’s birthday on Wednesday. In math, they are looking at the numbers before and after.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was excited to start preparing their graden for the Little Green Thumbs Program this week. On Wednesday they celebrated Mickey’s birthday by making theme day Mickey ears to wear.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had fun filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child! They will have an update for next week. They are learning about their senses in science class and addition and subtraction up to 12 in math. The star of the week is Liam Couture.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is very proud to have helped pack many boxes for Operation Christmas Child. They had a great time choosing the items for each child. They made 3D pictures of children catching snowflakes in art. In math they are working on writing addition stories.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about decisions in social studies. They are having fun using balance scales in math and learning about equal and unequal sets.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has started their math unit on addition and subtraction. They are continuing their author study and have begun writing and illustrating their Clifford stories.They had fun constructing a gigantic red Clifford for their bulletin board.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class has started new units in math on addition and subtraction. In grade three science they have started a new unit on soil. They had a lot of fun on Mickey Mouse Theme Day!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class was busy using toothbrushes to remove Pepsi stains off eggs in health class this week.  The students wrote math tests this week and are reading, writing and speaking about bullying in French.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great week. The grade six students presented speeches about building community and acting for peace. Isaac Buckingham and Emily Murley represented the class on Thursday night at the YMCA Peace Week Speak Off. The grade five students are learning about the cardiovascular system in science.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class is doing their last afternoon of leaf raking today. The group also held a bake sale on Wednesday to raise money for their trip next week. The English 1201 students have finished their novel study on “The Giver” and the English 2201 students have finished studying “Night”. The grade seven to nine students are attending Ursla Johnsons’ exhibit on basket weaving at Grenfell today.

COMING UP...

Next Wednesday we will be wearing “Moustaches “for Movember and collecting money for cancer. Also, on November 25 the grade three English and French students are presenting their poetry and artwork at the Corner Brook Public Library at 6:30 pm. This event is open to the public.

Our primary students will be taking part in some “Learn Not to Burn” sessions next week.
