Last
week we had our jamarama day for the Janeway. Students enjoyed a movie in the
gym with popcorn, chips, juice and candy organized by the grade 7 to level 1
students.
Our
scholastic book fair officially ended on Friday. Our book fair was a record
breaker! We sold $3,465.40 in books! Thank you to everyone who supported our
school book fair.
On
Friday morning we celebrated the Divine Mercy with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer
group.
Last
week some of our students presented the remainder of our donation to the
Western Memorial Hospital Foundation. Our total donation was $694.85. Carlos
Calvalcante, Marcus Gallant, Jayden Lempriere, and Maria Reynolds presented the
cheque to Debbie Benoit and Suzanne Carey.
We
held a special assembly on Monday for the provincial winners in the Foster
Families poster and story contest. Willow Boland received an honorary mention
in the kindergarten poster contest, Kate Lombard was the provincial winner in
the grade 1 poster contest, and Cole Boyd-Martin was the provincial winner in
the grades 2-3 story contest. Congratulations to our winners!
Today
for Halloween the Student Leadership Council has organized Halloween stations
for the junior kindergarten to grade 2 students and a haunted house on the
school stage for students in grades 3 to level 1. It’s great to see everyone
dressed up in their Halloween costumes. At lunch today we will have a costume
parade in the gym!
We
would like to thank June Alteen for the many items she donated. We wish her a
happy retirement!
We
are still collecting used and broken cell phones for the MMSB Recycle My Cell
Campaign. If you would like your phones
picked up you can call Dianne in the main office.
We
are wishing everyone a spooktacular and safe Halloween! Trick or treat!

| STARS OF THE WEEK |
Congratulations
to our book fair winners Ella Rashleigh and Lucas Neville who won the “guess
the number of pages” contest at the book fair, and to Colin Spencer who
correctly guessed the number of chocolates in the jar. Congratulations to Kate
Lombard who won the family draw, winning $25 for her family and $25 for her
classroom.
Congratulations
to Mme. Lachance’s class who won the Student Leadership Council “name that
movie” game for jamarama day.

| CLASS NEWS |
The
junior kindergarten classes would like to thank the Murphy, Hancock and Carey
MacDonald families for donating pumpkins to their classrooms. The students are
learning about the letter “d” and the number “5.
Mme.
Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is wishing everyone a happy
Halloween! They carved pumpkins on Thursday and did lots of counting and
sorting with the seeds. They are very proud of Willow for winning the Foster Families
poster contest.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is making a Halloween spider web and
skeleton crafts this week. They are carving pumpkins and tasting the seeds. The
students were also excited to read some fun Halloween poems and are looking
forward to their Halloween party today!
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class is learning about estimating in math this
week. They are doing some Halloween alliteration and are so excited about the
costume party today! Daniel Osmond is the star of the week. Happy haunting,
everyone! The class would like to congratulate Kate who was the grade 1
provincial winner in the Foster Families poster contest.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been busy this week reading
Halloween stories and working on lots of Halloween activities. They have made
spiders and carved their pumpkin. They are very excited to wear their costumes
to school today.
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class is carving pumpkins this week and doing some
estimating activities. They are estimating the height of their pumpkins and how
many seeds it will have. The students are doing some spider research this week.
The students are all very excited for the Halloween party on Friday.
Mme.
O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class did a project this week with fall
leaves. They have decorated their class pumpkin as Eyeore. They are studying
words that end in “ouille. Craig brought in a “quenouille” or bulrush.
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class had a very busy week. They were carving
pumpkins, roasting seeds, sharing Halloween coloured snacks (orange, green,
black and white), and preparing for their Halloween party today. They are also
creating Halloween creatures in language arts. It’s been a very spoooooky week!
They would like to congratulate Cole Boyd-Martin for winning the Foster
Families story writing contest.
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class created a black and
white pumpkin and haunted house with monsters inside for their classroom. They
also did some activities in science and French with Ms. Rumbolt’s class. In
math, the students learned about writing numners in words and the grade 4
students learned how to write cheques. They were very generous! Happy
Halloween, everyone!
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a lot of fun decorating their pumpkins
without carving them. The students were very creative with paint, glitter and
Halloween accessories. They would like to thank Kara and Joe Maloney for
donating the pumpkins to the classroom. The students also decorated the
classroom this week as they prepared for the Halloween celebrations today. The
grade 6 students will be leaf raking tomorrow as a fundraiser for the
Intermediate Skills Challenge.
Mr.
Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class has been busy preparing for their
leaf raking fundraiser this Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. They are also
organizing the school Remembrance Day ceremony.

The skills challenge team will be leaf raking tomorrow from 9 am to 4 pm. It’s not
too late to be added to our list. Call the school office if you would like your
lawn raked.
Operation
Christmas Child begins November 4.
Our Remembrance Day ceremony is November 7.
School will be closed Monday, November 10 and Tuesday, November 11.

This week was waste reduction week. To start of the week we began collecting used and broken cell phones for the MMSB Recycle My Cell Campaign. We will continue collecting until November 21. If any of our readers would like to donate used or broken cell phones they can drop them off the school or call the office to have them picked up. Some of the other activities we did to celebrate waste reduction was a litterless lunch day, reduced lighting day, non-microwavable lunch day and water conservation day. Classes also did activities about different ways we can waste less. This week we have also started recycling pens and markers.
This week our school held our fall Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you to Mrs. George, Mr. Bryan McCarthy and Mr. Mark Paddock, and the team of teachers for organizing an excellent book fair! Many families and students visited the book fair on family night.
This week was the last cross country running meet for the grades 3 to 6 runners. The meet was held at Templeton.
Basketball fever is about to begin at IHMS. The junior high basketball teams began practicing this week. The boys’ and girls’ soccer intermediate soccer teams have also been busy with practice at our school.
On Thursday the Student Leadership council organized our pajamarama day. They prepared a game called “Guess that Movie” for the students to play at recess and a movie in the gym during the afternoon. The junior high class organized a popcorn and candy sale for everyone to enjoy with the movie. It was a lot of fun!
Mr. Ryley Nadon is happy to report that we have some new outdoor gym equipment. Some of the new equipment includes a portable basketball net, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls and tether ball.
We would like to thank Paula Sheppard-Walsh our school health nurse who did a session on anaphylaxis with our teachers on Thursday afterschool.
We would like to thank Mr. Mark Paddock who installed new sides on the planting beds in our greenhouse this week.

| STARS OF THE WEEK |
We would like to congratulate Ben Griffin who placed second in the boys’ division at the Frost and Furious bike race over the weekend. Congratulations also to Rachael Griffin who placed first in the girls’ division and Lily Smallwood who placed second. Awesome race, everyone!

| CLASS NEWS |
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is wishing Lilah a very happy birthday. They celebrated on Monday with cake pops. They made ghosts on Tuesday and witch potion on Wednesday. The students loved pyjama day and watching the Halloween movie.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a great time on jamarama day watching a movie and having treats. They are learning about living and non-living things in science. The students are also helping the environment by recycling cell phones as a part of the Recycle My Cell Campaign.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the seasons in science class. In social studies they are learning about rights and responsibilities. They really loved pajama day. The star of the week is Cole Lyver.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning lots of Halloween vocabulary. They have begun some Halloween activities including making potion recipes!
Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning how weather effects living things in science. They are also continuing their study about spiders and other creepy, crawly things. In art they are having lots of fun getting messy making spider webs with glitter.
Mme. O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class has started a class journal for students to keep their good work. They are also doing some writing activities with their Halloween words.
Ms. Rumbolt’s grade three and four class is eagerly awaiting their pumpkin decorating session next week. The grade three students are learning about plants and soil in both science class and language arts. They have gone on a leaf hunt, classified leaves, and have completed an experiment with celery stalks and coloured water. The grade four students are enjoying making volcanoes in science with Mr. Ryley.
Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class is learning about security during trick or treating. They have also illustrated some security rules. They have also decorated a pumpkin with black and white patterns.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class really enjoyed the pajamarama day on Thursday. The students are creating Halloween scratch artwork in art class. In addition, they have been busy preparing for math unit tests and learning to play their new instruments.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class has begun their Skills Canada preparation. Students also played a large role in the packaging and selling of snacks during the school pajamarama theme day. The junior high girls and boys basketball teams began practicing this week.

This
week was Citizenship week. Classes participated in different activities about
our Canadian Citizenship.
Last
Friday we all enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving meal with the entire school.
Thank you to Academy Canada for preparing the meal and to Mrs. Janice Coleman
and the parent volunteers who served dinner. Thank you to Madison Noel and
Felipe Barros for emceeing our dinner. Also, thank you to Mr. Graham and the
primary choir for performing. In addition, our Brazilian exchange students who
sang a beautiful song. Our school presented our food bank donation to Mrs.
Agnes McCarthy of the Bay of Islands Food Bank. Thank you to our students and
families for your donations.
Our
vegetable fundraiser was a big success. We sold 620 bags of vegetables. Thank
you to our families for supporting this fundraiser and to Mr. Drew Nadon’s
class for helping with the vegetables when they arrived.
On
Wednesday afternoon we celebrated healthy commotion activities. Students are
participated in four different stations including an obstacle course and
smoothie making. Thank you to Mr. Ryley Nadon for organizing this event.
This
week our cross country running teams participated in a meet in Stephenville for
grades three to Level 1. All our runners ran great races!
We
would like to thank Dru Kennedy of Dru Kennedy Photography for donating a new
camera to our school.
This
Friday is the Janeway Pajama-rama. We will be celebrating next week with a
pajama day, some movie trivia “Name that Movie”, and an afternoon movie and
popcorn!

| IHMS WEEKLY CLASS NEWS |
The
junior kindergarten classes are doing the letter “C” and the number “4”. They
are growing corn and making splash monsters. They have three new CONA students
to their classroom this week. They are Heather Elliott, Trina Foss and Jessica
Leonard Rowsell. The junior kindergarten classes welcome Noah Cassell to JK
this week.
Mme.
Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is celebrating Citizenship week.
The students are learning to sing O’Canada in French. On Wednesday, the
students made berry smoothies as part of healthy commotion activities. Yum! The
students have started to make haunted houses to help with thie French Halloween
vocabulary.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class completed healthy commotion activities on
Wednesday afternoon. It was a lot of fun! They have been busy making Halloween
crafts and talking about Halloween. Shophie Grant and her family welcomed baby
Elinor this week. Congratulations!
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class had fun making haunted houses and writing
about them. In religion they are learning about what it was like to grow up in
Jesus’ time. They are learning facts about Canada as they celebrate Citizenship
Week. Brady Green is the star of the week.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had so much fun during the healthy
commotion. They loved the smoothies and playing FITGO. They are learning what
it means to be a good citizen. They have realized that they make positive
contributions to their community and the world.
Ms.
Park’s grade two class is learning about money in math. They have started a new
spider unit in language arts. They are learning all kinds of cool and creepy
spider facts. They are also looking at schools in the past in social studies
class. They are comparing their school to schools in the past.
Mme.
O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is starting a new unit in language
arts on fall and leaves. Their celery has not yet sprouted. They are watching
very closely!
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class is happy to be back after the long
weekend. The grade 3 students had a lot of fun making apple sauce with the
French Immersion grade 3 students and Mrs. McCarthy on Friday. After they made
the apple sauce they practiced a choral reading of a poem about apples. The
entire class is looking forward to some Halloween projects.
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class has learned a lot of
French verbs this week. It was a real challenge. They have begun to talk, read
and write about Halloween. They wrote about “what if everything was possible to
create the perfect Halloween costume”.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed the healthy commotion activities on
Wednesday afternoon. The grade 6 students had a math test this week. In French,
the students are making haunted houses!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class was
excited to take part in a cross country running event in Stephenville on
Tuesday. The students enjoyed the challenge! They are looking forward to the
leaf raking on November 1st.

This week we had much to celebrate. It was Fire Prevention Week, Kids Eat Smart Week, and Education Week.

| We would like to thank Mr. Drew Nadon and members of the student council, Maria Reynolds, Madison Noel, nna MacKenzie, and Felipe Barros Nery Chaves, who presented a cheque of $500 last Friday for the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation radiothon. The remainder of the money collected will be presented later this week. Thank you to all our families who donated for this cause. |
On
Monday we had fire drill with the city of Corner brook Fire Department. All the
classes did very well in leaving the building quietly.
Mrs.
Coleman visited our school on Tuesday to celebrate the Feast Of Rosary with
kindergarten to grade six students. The prayer group helped to lead the rosary
and special prayers.

| To celebrate Kids Eat Smart week we held a pancake breakfast on Wednesday morning. Mrs. George, Mrs. King, Mrs. Vincent, Ms. Anderson and Ms. Park served up some delicious pancakes for all the students. |
The theme
of this year’s Education Week is “I learn, I remember” or “Je me souviens,
J’apprends”. Students participated in classroom activities to celebrate
Education Week.
Our
cross country running team took part in a fun run at Jubilee Field on Wednesday
afternoon. All our runners ran an excellent race.
Our
school vegetable orders arrived on Thursday and are available pick up at the
school.
This
week we collected items for our annual thanksgiving food drive. Thank you to
all the families who donated for the food drive. We are making the presentation
today at our annual Thanksgiving Day dinner. Our dinner is being prepared by
Academy Canada and will be served by parent volunteers. The primary choir will
be performing during the dinner and our Brazilian exchange students will be performing
a song in Portuguese called “Pais E Filhos” or “Fathers and Sons”.
We would like to welcome a new early childhood
educator to our junior kindergarten program. Ms. Brittany Randell will begin on
Tuesday.

junior kindergarten classes would like to thank nursing students, Marilyn Baikie,
Nicolette Garnier-Busch, Neil Hewitt, Deanne McCarthy and Julie Gilbeault, who
did a presentation with the students on Tuesday morning about healthy eating.
The students in
Mrs. English and Mrs. Vincent’s class who were very excited to plant trees with Shaun Green last week. This week the students have been busy learning about fire safety for fire prevention week.

They are really enjoying using ten frames in math this week. They are really
looking forward to the thanksgiving dinner today! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was very busy this week learning about
Thanksgiving. They are really looking forward to the long weekend. In social
studies, they have been discussing culture and traditions. Thanksgiving dinner
was a main tradition the children liked to talk about.
Ms.
Park’s grade two class is finished writing about things they are thankful to
have in their lives. They are excited to be singing today at our annual
Thanksgiving dinner!
Mme.
O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class has planted lettuce seeds in the
greenhouse and are anxiously waiting for them to grow. They have begun a new
unit in math and are busy practicing their numbers to 100. They are thankful
for many things and are busy making cards of thanks.
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class were very busy this week. The grade three
students delivered postcards last week to family and friends as part of their
language arts program. This week they are starting a new unit and are excited
to be making homemade apple sauce. The grade 4 students are excited to announce
that Clare Coleman is their student leadership council class representative.
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class is busy making
thanksgiving card art this week. They are also practicing their verbs – the
present, past and future.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great time picking apples on
Wednesday at the Chrappa’s home. The student especially enjoyed the camp fire
and treats. They would like to thank Jari, Alexandra, and Max Chrappa for
inviting them! This week the class welcomes Aaron White to grade 5.

| Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class went on a field trip to Steady Brook Falls on Wednesday. They will soon be preparing for the intermediate skills challenge. They welcome Arista White to their class this week. Arista is in Level 1. |
