Last Friday there was a foster family presentation. Mr. Albert Buckle and Mrs. Linda Buckle presented to our three provincial winners at a school assembly. Each student received a framed certificate and the school received a plaque.
On Saturday there was a basketball practice. Thank you to Mr. Taaffe and Mr. Whelan for training with the team.
Monday was picture day this week. Everyone looked great. All week the Student Leadership Council sold vampire popcorn to raise money for the school playground. Also, Mrs. Neville, the cafeteria lady sold cupcakes for the playground. Yum! Yum!
On Tuesday we practiced our first school wide lock down. All students did a great job!
The new school SMARTboards are now installed and working in the classrooms.
This week we welcome three nursing students doing a clinical placement to our school. Michelle Skanes, Brittany MacDonald and Mike Taylor are all working with the Junior Kindergarten classes.
We have many parent volunteers this week helping with our school breakfast program and the lunch program. Thank you everyone!
Stars of the Week
Several students took part in fun runs this week. On Wednesday Alex Williams, Jenna Yetman and Nicole Keeping ran in a fun run. There was a second run at Xavier Junior High in Deer Lake on Thursday.
Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are starting Remembrance Day activities.
The Kindergarten class is working on what Remembrance Day means.
The French Immersion Kindergarten class is finishing up Halloween vocabulary and will celebrate Halloween today. This week the students are working on the letter “h” and are learning French words that begin with “h”.
The grade one class is starting Operation Christmas Child. They are learning about spiders and are excited about their Halloween class party.
The grade two class is doing fun Halloween based math problems and are excited about their Halloween party today.
The grade three and four class had a French party on Tuesday. They got a new whiteboard and have a new seating arrangement.
The grade five and six class painted rocks in religion class this week. They got their new SMARTboard installed and they gave their old whiteboard to the grade 3 and 4 class. They are looking forward to games and crafts at their Halloween party today.
The junior high class has begun designing a new robot and working on this years missions. The theme is Body Forward Challenge. All the missions have to do with the function of the human body. Some students are also working on other challenges including: wind turbine design, job skill demonstration, prepared speech and worksite safety.
Coming Up
There will be a girl’s basketball practice on Saturday morning from 10-12.

This afternoon we are celebrating Halloween. Happy Halloween everyone! Many students and teachers are dressed up in costumes. At lunch there will be a costume contest and haunted house by the grade 3 and 4 classroom and the Student Leadership Council.Last Friday there was a foster family presentation. This week our school had a Scholastic Book Fair on Tuesday and Wednesday. We sold $2,286.00 in books! Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy and all of the other teachers and volunteers who helped out. There were lots of great books. The theme was “A Book Safari”. Many students won book and toy prizes in the contest “I wish I Could Win”. Also, Nicola du Toit won the family door prize. Her family won $25 and her teacher Ms. Dutton also won $25.
Girls basketball try-outs were held last weekend. Thank you to Mr. Whelan and Ms. Dutton for training with us. All the girls worked really hard.
The Student Leadership Council canteen services began this week. They are selling: 100 calorie chips, cheese strings, water, milk, and ice cream at recess. On Wednesday they held a bake sale to raise money for a haunted house display they are working on with the grade 3 and 4 class. The bake sale raised $84.00. Also, all next week they will be selling bags of vampire popcorn for $0.50. This money will be donated to the playground project.
This week is Foster Family Week and Waste Reduction Week. We are still trying to get as many used cell phones as we can. If we win the contest we will have $1,000.00 for our outdoor classroom project. We had several draws for Waste Reduction Week. Students received prizes made from recycled materials.
We now have a perfect attendance wall posted next to the office. Thank you to Ms. Bennett for your artwork. Many students were excited to see their name on the list.
There was a special mass of Bishop Crosby on Thursday at the cathedral. Many students and staff attended. Congratulations to Bishop Crosby on your new job.
Stars of the Week
This year we had three provincial winners for Foster Family Week. For the Kindergarten poster contest our first place winner was Makayla Ianni. Our primary student winner in grade 3 for her story was Keely Brothers and for elementary in grade 4 for her story Hailey Colbourne. There is a special assembly for them this afternoon in the gym. Also, our school received to plaques for the wall.
Also congratulations to Alex Williams and Hailey Colbourne who ran in the St. Gerard’s fun run last week and did awesome.

The junior high class has started putting together their Lego work station and building a new robot design for the Skills Challenge. They enjoyed the book fair this week and decorating their classroom.

Monday is our picture day. We hope everyone looks their best!
Next Friday all classes will be having a Halloween party. We hope you all have fun!

On Friday we had our Thanksgiving dinner. It was fantastic! Thank you to Academy Canada for the delicious turkey. Thank you to Mr. Graham for leading the choir and Mrs. McHugh for conducting the band.
Everyone was very generous when it came to the food bank donations. There were two full tables of food items, a $50 Coleman’s gift card donated for fresh items and five bags of vegetables. Sarah Keeping, Claire Reynolds and Sam Antle presented the items to Mrs. Agnes McCarthy from the local food bank.
Last Friday we celebrated Mass in our chapel. Thank you to Father Leonard who held the mass.
Will Drover, a student in Madame Noseworthy’s class, donated $119 towards a playground for our school. He was saving up for a dirt bike, but decided to donate it to us instead. Thank you, Will!
On Thursday we had our annual Terry Fox walk. It was a lot of fun! Thank you to Mrs. George who spoke to students about Terry Fox. Also, did you know that Terry Fox visited our school when it was still called All Hallows?
Also on Thursday there was a fun run at St. Gerard’s. A few students ran in this race and did very well. Thank you to Ms. Dutton for training the athletes.

Last week Nicole Keeping, William Goodridge and Jenna Yetman ran a fun run at C.C. Loughlin. All did very well, way to go! Congratulations to Anri Vermooten who travelled to Gander last weekend to participate in YC 2010.
Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are playing Halloween games, making pumpkins and bats. They are learning about spider webs in science and they are decorating their classroom.
The Kindergarten class is learning about plants in science and learning their letter “E”.
The French Immersion Kindergarten class has almost finished learning about Thanksgiving in French.
The grade one class is doing lots of Halloween writing and some cool crafts. In math they are learning to “count on” and to build numbers on a ten frame with pumpkins.
The grade two class is getting ready for Halloween and making bird feeders from milk cartons.
The grade three and four class is working on a birthday party for everyone in their class including their hamster Nibbles. They are also having a Halloween party. I think it is going to be a scare! Boo!
The grade five and six class is learning about poems. They had so much fun in art when they made recycled bracelets and key chains out of old newspaper and shopping bags. They had a great time on the Terry Fox walk.
The junior high class went on a hike to Steady Brook Falls. They also did some geocaching. They are preparing for the Skills Canada Intermediate Skills Challenge.
Coming Up
Basketball try-outs are on Saturday at 10:00 am for girls in grades 4 to 6.
Next week Immaculate Heart of Mary School is collecting used cell phones for waste reduction week. If we can collect enough we can win a green grant for $1,000 to go towards our playground.
On Tuesday our school is having a book fair. We have lots of books for you. It is on Tuesday from 6-9 and Wednesday from 9-5.

Last week we had medical theme day. We raised $658 for the Western Memorial Hospital Foundation. A lot of kids dressed up. Thank you everyone who donated money.
Running club began on Friday. The first running meet was held at C.C. Louglin on Wednesday after school. Thank you to Ms. Dutton for coaching the team.
This week was fire prevention week. We had two practice fire drills.
This week the Student Leadership Council is organizing a thanksgiving food drive. We are collecting food to create food baskets. Each class has been assigned an item to bring in.
On Monday the grades 3 to 6 had a presentation for Foster Families week. Thank you to Amey Kendell and Denise Molloy for presenting. Foster Family week is October 17-23. Many students drew pictures, and wrote stories or essays for Foster Family week.
Yesterday we celebrated the Feast of the Rosary with a special Prayer of the Rosary at lunch. Thank you to Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group for organizing this event.
Today is our annual Thanksgiving Day dinner. Thank you to all the chefs from Academy Canada, the band for playing and the choirs who sang.
Stars of the Week
The Kindergarten class is doing a thanksgiving act and they’re learning their letter sounds.
The French Immersion Kindergarten class is learning more and more French words everyday. They enjoyed their Colemans nutrition tour with the other Kindergarten class on Wednesday.
The grade one class is colouring turkeys. They are thankful for Thanksgiving dinner and they’re reading bible stories.
The grade two class is cutting out paper turkeys and doing patterning in math with corn.
The grade three and four class raised $240 from their bake sale for a SMART board. They are also making a haunted house for Halloween. They are going on a forestry field trip today.
The grade five and six class just completed essays for Good Governance Week. They are looking forward to the math contest and the long weekend.
The junior high class enjoyed their forestry walk on Wednesday with the Model Forest of Newfoundland. They learned about all sorts of plants that are safe to eat. The grade 7’s have math and science tests coming up. They were excited to help with the veggie orders.
Coming Up
School is closed on Monday for Thanksgiving Day. Also, there is no school on Tuesday for Kindergarten to grade 9 for a teacher’s Professional Development. There will be school for all Junior Kindergarten students.
The Scholastic Book Fair is on October 19 and 20.

Today is medical theme day for the Western Memorial Hospital Radiothon. Everyone looks great all dressed up! Our Terry Fox walk was postponed yesterday because of all the rain this week. We look forward to our walk in early October.
Student Leadership Council Elections are over. Our Co-Presidents are Carla Du Toit and Sarah Yetman, Vice-President is Sarah Keeping, Secretary is Claire Reynolds and Primary Representative is Jenna Yetman. The class representative for grade 5 is Maria Reynolds and grade 6 is Nicole Keeping. We hope to have all the class representatives chosen before our first meeting.
Running club started this week. The running club meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school to practice.
Thank you to all the parents and teachers who have been helping with the breakfast program in the morning and at lunch time this week.
The grade 3 and 4 students have decided to raise money for a SMART board for their classroom. They started with a bake sale on Wednesday and they raised almost $200!! The cookies, cupcakes and fruit kabobs were yummy. More plans are already being made for more fundraisers.
On Monday public health nurse Becky Newton did a hand washing presentation with the Kindergarten classes.
All the kids in soccer intramurals are having lots of fun!
Stars of the Week
Patrick Davis and Andrew Dolomount have joined the city of Corner Brook Community Band. They play saxophone.
Congratulations to Sarah Yetman who was promoted to ALC last week at Air Cadets.
Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “c” and the number 2. They are doing Thanksgiving crafts, and science activities.
The Kindergarten class is learning about living animals in science and working on the letter “l”.
The French Immersion Kindergarten class is learning about the importance of family and their role in their family. In math they are learning about patterning. They have been working on the letter “I”.
The grade one class is learning how to count to 20. They are going on a nutrition tour to Colemans very soon.
The grade two class is playing lots of fun math games and doing fall crafts in art.
The grade three and four class is making websites about a country. They are reading Storyworks magazine and practicing handwriting in language. They would like to thank Mr. Rob Ryan for presenting “bones” to them this week.
The grade five and six class is writing about memories in language arts and their teaching is reading “How Come the Best Clues are Always in the Garbage” to them.
The junior high class is busy with tests and quizzes. In gym class they are making their own games. In Enrichment they learned about Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.
Coming Up
Vegetable orders are due today. They will be delivered to the school on October 5.
The Scholastic Book Fair is on October 19 and 20.

Today is medical theme day for the Western Memorial Hospital Radiothon. Everyone looks great all dressed up! Our Terry Fox walk was postponed yesterday because of all the rain this week. We look forward to our walk in early October.
Student Leadership Council Elections are over. Our Co-Presidents are Carla Du Toit and Sarah Yetman, Vice-President is Sarah Keeping, Secretary is Claire Reynolds and Primary Representative is Jenna Yetman. The class representative for grade 5 is Maria Reynolds and grade 6 is Nicole Keeping. We hope to have all the class representatives chosen before our first meeting.
Running club started this week. The running club meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school to practice.
Thank you to all the parents and teachers who have been helping with the breakfast program in the morning and at lunch time this week.
The grade 3 and 4 students have decided to raise money for a SMART board for their classroom. They started with a bake sale on Wednesday and they raised almost $200!! The cookies, cupcakes and fruit kabobs were yummy. More plans are already being made for more fundraisers.
On Monday public health nurse Becky Newton did a hand washing presentation with the Kindergarten classes.
All the kids in soccer intramurals are having lots of fun!
Stars of the Week
Patrick Davis and Andrew Dolomount have joined the city of Corner Brook Community Band. They play saxophone.
Congratulations to Sarah Yetman who was promoted to ALC last week at Air Cadets.
Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “c” and the number 2. They are doing Thanksgiving crafts, and science activities.
The Kindergarten class is learning about living animals in science and working on the letter “l”.
The French Immersion Kindergarten class is learning about the importance of family and their role in their family. In math they are learning about patterning. They have been working on the letter “I”.
The grade one class is learning how to count to 20. They are going on a nutrition tour to Colemans very soon.
The grade two class is playing lots of fun math games and doing fall crafts in art.
The grade three and four class is making websites about a country. They are reading Storyworks magazine and practicing handwriting in language. They would like to thank Mr. Rob Ryan for presenting “bones” to them this week.
The grade five and six class is writing about memories in language arts and their teaching is reading “How Come the Best Clues are Always in the Garbage” to them.
The junior high class is busy with tests and quizzes. In gym class they are making their own games. In Enrichment they learned about Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.
Coming Up
Vegetable orders are due today. They will be delivered to the school on October 5.
The Scholastic Book Fair is on October 19 and 20.
