On Monday school was closed for a professional development day.
Tuesday night our school hosted a Pre-Festival Showcase for parents and families. Our choirs and bands played as well as several soloists. Thank you to Mr. Graham and Mrs. McHugh for preparing the bands and the choirs for this awesome show! Also thank you to Jenna Yetman who did an awesome job emceeing the night.  Soloists included: Abigail Companion, Sarah Keeping, Nicole Keeping, MacKenzie Brothers, Katerina Hamann, Maria Reynolds, Hannah Sparkes, and Alex Williams.

The Student Leadership Council sold gold coins for St. Patrick’s Day on Wednesday and Thursday. The coins are being given out today.

On Wednesday we celebrated Pi day. Classes had special math activities and in the afternoon we had a Pi Contest. Alex Williams was first place with 82 decimal places of Pi, Gina Spencer was second with 64 decimal places and Sarah Keeping was third with 62 decimal places. Way to go everyone! Our classroom pi winners were: (Kindergarten) Liam Freake , Mary Jane Jacobs and Emma Barrett, (grade 1) Thomas Bradbury and Anna De Carle, (grade 2) Megan Williams, (grade 3) McKenna Batstone and Chloe Colbourne, (grade 4) Gina Spencer, (grade 5) Alex Williams, (grade 6) Maria Reynolds, (grade 7) Nicole Keeping, (grade 8) Sarah Keeping, and (grade 9 and Level 1) Patrick Davis. Congratulations to all Pi winner and thank you to Mr. Taaffe for organizing the day and for all the parents who donated pies.

March is nutrition month. To celebrate we are focusing on a different fruit each week. This week is apples! We have had trivia, jokes and special activities, and have enjoyed eating celebrating apple day in the breakfast program on Thursday.
Today we are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green and hoping to catch a leprechaun. 

Stars of the Week
 
Congratulations to the class winners in our Moo Off on Friday for Milk Spirit Week. The winners were Jasmine Batstone, Jade Park, Jackson Ganz, Katie Colbourne, Liam Freake, Thomas Bradbury, Avery Brothers, Hailey Vandeheide, Chenoah Park, Jayden Lempriere, Keagan Sheppard, Katerina Hamann, Abigail Companion and Bethany Whelan. Teacher winners were Mr. Hancock and Ms. Morrall.
Congratulations to Keely Brothers who won a gold medal on floor, a silver medal in valut and a forth place ribbon on bars last weekend at the Snowball Gymnastics competition in St. John’s last weekend.

Congratulations to Anna Brake who won a bronze medal in pre-preliminary two (8 year olds) at the figure skating competition in CBS.
Congratulations to Clare Coleman, Lauren Davis, Arabella LeBlanc, Alessandra LeBlanc, Jasmine Batstone, and Heather Cooper who were awarded medals for downhill skiing last weekend.


From The Classrooms

The junior kindergarten classes made apple people for apple day and played hopscotch for Pi Day. On Wednesday Mrs. Crocker and Mrs. Dick’s classes did a nutritional tour at Colemans Food Centre on Humber Road.  Mrs. Vincent and Mrs. English’s class will be going next week. They are ending the week with St. Patrick’s Day activities.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great day celebrating Pi day. They really enjoyed playing math games.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. They are also doing leprechaun, shamrock and golden coin activities. Throughout the week they are learning about the letter “p” and trying to memorize new sight words. Maxwell had his first visit from the tooth fairy after losing his first tooth on Sunday! Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Corner Book!

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is doing the letter “p”. They had a great time celebrating Pi day, Apple Day and St. Patrick’s Day. On Wednesday they all pinned their apples on the wall. Last week the class made a giant igloo out of recycled bottles. All the students in the school got to glue on a bottle.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about the parts of plants in science and learning about French words that start with the letter “p”. They are also learning about fruits and made a fruit salad craft.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about natural and constructed features in social studies. In honour of St. Patrick’s Day they are sampling some green foods and building a leprechaun trap!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about technology in social studies. They are doing lots of St. Patrick’s day activities. This year they are hoping to catch the leprechaun.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class welcomes a new student, Max Chrappa, to their classroom. Welcome to IHMS, Max! The grade 3’s are learning about fractions in math. The grade 4’s are learning to multiply three digit numbers. The grade 4’s are working hard at their speeches for the elementary speak off.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a presentation from the Public Health Nurse, Ms. April Dakins,  on Tuesday for nutrition month. They are busy writing their speeches for the Elementary Speak Off in April.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class are having a cooking challenge this month. This week they made cookies. Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Gillard’s team tied for first place. Next week they are making casseroles. The grade 7’s visited the public library on Tuesday to do research for their heritage fair projects.

Coming Up

Our annual St. Patrick’s Day potluck dinner is this Saturday from 5-7 pm.
The Rotary Music Festival begins next week. Our school is hosting the performing choirs.
Junior High Regional Drama Festival in Deer Lake March 30-April 1.
