Students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are getting excited for Christmas. They are preparing for tomorrow’s Santa Clause Parade. 

We would like to thank Mrs. Vincent, Mrs. English, Mrs. Dicks and Ms. Crocker for doing a fundraiser for the Shepherd’s Fund last Saturday. They raised $310.00 and would like to thank the families who participated.

Congratulations are extended to Gina Spencer for having scored the highest mark in Atlantic Canada on the Royal Conservatory exam. Gina and Mr. Graham travelled to Halifax over the weekend where Gina was presented with her medal.

Congratulations are extended to Liam Dawe, who won a bronze medal and to Noah Evans who won a gold medal at a Karate tournament held in Corner Brook.

Congratulations are extended to Brandon Brake, Carter Bromley, Will Brothers, Samuel Buckle, Gavin Doman, Jakson Ganz, Alexie Genest, Ryan Lombard, Jack Ryan, Riley Wilton and Cohen Vardy who won a medal at a hockey tournament over the weekend in Deer Lake.

Congratulations are extended to Nathan Anderson, Hailey Colbourne, Brooklynn Companion, Mira Ismail, Sara Ismail, Douglas MacKenzie, Zubia Mahmood and Alex Williams who finished third in the Robot Category and who also finished third in the overall category for First League Lego Robotics at the Skills Challenge held in Mount Pearl over the weekend. They competed against 32 other teams. Congratulations are extended to Hajra Ahmad and Claire Reynolds who placed third in the Wind Turbine Category. Mackenzie Brothers and Maria Reynolds did a great job in the Videography Division as did Hannah Sparkes in the public speaking, and to Luan Dias, Matthew Simoes Vicete and Gabrielli Dasilva who were team mentors. Congratulations to all participants as well as teacher sponsors Mr. Gillard, Mr. Hancock and Ms. Meade. The Enrichment Team would like to thank the parents and grandparents who helped with the transportation. They would also like to thank everyone who supported the Lia Sophia Jewellery Fundraiser which finished on Wednesday and was in aid of the trip.

We would also like to thank 7 nursing students who finished their clinical in the J.K. Program on Wednesday. Thank you Christine Atkinson, Philip March, Erin Noseworthy, Cheryl Thorne, Cherise Flynn, Sarah Mercier, and Ryan Rose.

Our school choir has been invited to sing at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Remembrance Day Square.

Our school will have a float in the Santa Clause Parade. Students are asked to be at the Pepsi Center by 4:30 p.m. Please dress warmly and do not forget your Santa’s hat. We would like to thank Conway’s Trucking for supplying the truck.

We would like to welcome Mme. Ryan to our school. She is teaching in the French Immersion Program. Ms. Dwyer finishes her replacement position in our Kindergarten English classroom today as Ms. Hodder will return on Monday. We would like to extend best wishes Ms. Dwyer and we would like to welcome back Mrs. Hodder.

Two new Smart Boards have arrived. One will be installed in Miss Park’s room and the other in Mme. Mondoux’s classroom.    

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: The nursing students left yesterday and will be missed! The students are learning about numbers, doing Christmas activities, and learning their new song for the Christmas Concert.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: This week the students are learning about the letter M. They are still learning about animals in Science and are learning about rules in Social Studies. Ms. Dwyer is very sad this is her last week at I.H.M.S. and wishes all of her students the best!

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: In Health, these students are learning about the 5 Senses. They are also learning about animals and practicing numbers up to 10.

Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class: In Science the students are learning about animals. In health they are learning about nutritious meals and continuing to learn their Christmas play.

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade Ones would like to thank everyone for the donations for Operation Christmas Child. This year they filled 55 boxes, which beat last year’s number!

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade Twos are excited to announce they received $200.00 towards books for their classroom. In Science they are learning about water and air. In Math  they have started a new chapter called Data Analysis.

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class:  The students are finishing their fitness testing. They just finished a unit in Social Studies . They are learning about Jake the Puffin.

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six class: The Grade 5’s and 6’s are getting excited about getting on the school float this weekend. They are having fun writing Christmas stories and preparing in band for the Christmas Concert.

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: The students are happy to be back. They had an awesome time in St. John’s. They enjoyed taking part in the Skills Challenge and really liked all the fun extra activities they got to do. They would like to thank their teachers for making it all possible.

There is one week left to November and students and staff at Immaculate Heart of Mary School are getting excited for our holiday. Before we know it Santa will be here with lots of gifts and cheer!

This week is Peace week and Miss Neary hosted an in-school Grade 6 speak of! Congratulations to all participants!

We would like to welcome Christine Atkinson, Philip March, Erin Noseworthy, Cheryl Thorne, Cherise Flynn, Sarah Mercier, and Ryan Rose students from the Western Regional School of Nursing, who are covering a clinical placement in our J.K. program. 

Mme. Perez Diaz would like to thank Sasha Fisher, site coordinator for MUN Let’s Talk Science Classroom Visit Program for her presentation with the Kindergarten French Immersion class. The students really enjoyed the presentation!

Student nurses, Brad Dyke and Nolan Short completed their Health Project on Bullying with the Grade 3 -4 class this week. Thank you!

On Monday, we celebrated a Disney Theme Day in honor of Mickey Mouse’s birthday on Sunday.

This week our students from Grade 1-9 participated in the Mathletics Math Challenge. Participants from across Canada competed in a two day fun on-line Math challenge. This is Canada’s official lead up event to the World Education Games in March 2013. 

Parent/Teacher Night was held on Wednesday evening. We would like to thanks families for attending and showing their support.

The Grade 7-Level I students, along with teacher sponsors Ms. Meade, Mr. Hancock, and Mr. Gillard left on Thursday for Mount Pearl. Students will participate in the Skills Challenge Competition on Saturday in the following categories: First League Lego Robotics, Wind Turbine, Job Skills Demonstration, Videography and Public Speaking. Best of luck to all participants!

On Saturday our school will be hosting our Annual Shop and Drop fundraiser. Parents can drop off their children to the school from 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. while parents go shopping.  Cost for the first child is $20.00.Please contact the school for more information.

Our Christmas Concert will be held on Dec. 13th. More details to follow.

 

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: The children have been preparing for Christmas, singing songs and creating crafts. They are really enjoying having the nursing students in their classroom .  

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: This week Ms. Dwyer’s class is learning the letter N. They were really excited about passing in their posters for the Remembrance Day contest.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week the students are learning about the letter G. They are also learning new French words that start with the letter G. They are learning about families and how they can be different from one another. They are talking about how many people live in a family and how families can consist of different people.

Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class:  This week the students are continuing to learn Christmas songs in French and learning more French by working on their Christmas play .

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: These students are learning about one and   two more and one and  two less in Math. In Science they are learning about their senses and how they can protect us. In Social Studies we are packing up their boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: This week the Grade 2’s are learning how to count money and are really excited to start preparing for the Christmas concert.

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class:  In this class the students are learning about sentence structure and how to state answers when asked questions. They are getting excited to prepare for Christmas and enjoying crafting for the special holiday.

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six class: The students are really excited about Skills Challenge. The Grade 5’s would like to wish the Grade 6s the best of luck.    

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: These students have been working hard to prepare for the Skills Challenge taking place in St. Johns. They would like to congratulate themselves on a job well done in preparation for this special event. They would like to thank Nicole White from the VON for her input into their senior project.

Reading Rocks NL winners: Claire Reynolds, Emma Hancock and Clara Ryan


November is quickly passing. Students and staff at Immaculate Heart of  Mary School are working hard as Christmas break is quickly approaching. Last week our school took part in various Remembrance Day activities and services.

We would like to thank Mr. Gillard for organizing the service. A thank-you  to teachers and students for their roles in the service. The student involvement was outstanding and Hannah Sparkes did an excellent job as our emcee.

A special thank-you to our invited guests, Msgr. Gale, members of the RNC, Mr. Hedley Smith representing the Royal Canadian Legion, Mr. Bon Fagan representing the R.C.I.S.A. and Josh McCarthy, a student from C.B.R.H., who played the Last Post.

During last week, our school held a fundraiser for Operation Veterans, and  raised $150.00 for this national campaign.

This past Wednesday and Saturday, students from Grade 6- Level I were leaf  raking to raise money for their upcoming trip to Skills Challenge in Mount Pearl. They would like to thank all who supported them.

The past weekend Caylie Blake and Olivia Park participated in the 2013 Skate Canada NL & Labrador Sectional Championship in Mount Pearl. Both girls skated well at the competition! Caylie Blake won a gold medal in the Juvenile Ladies under 11!! Anna Brake attended a figure skating seminar in Mount Pearl as well.

Congratulations are extended to Gina Spencer who won a gold medal from the Royal Conservatory for having the highest mark in the Atlantic Provinces!

Report cards were distributed today and Parent/Teacher Night is Wednesday, November 21st from 7-830p.m.

Operation Christmas Child and Recycle My Cell campaign ended on Thursday. We would like to thank everyone for your donations.

We would like to welcome to our school Tawyna Solo, Cassandra McCausland, and Shelagh Stevenson from the College of the North Atlantic. They are doing their 5 week work placement in the Junior Kindergarten Program.   

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: The students had special visitors last week. Firemen from the local department came and showed students their equipment and informed students about what they do at their jobs. This week they have begun Christmas activities.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: This week Ms. Dwyer’s class is learning the letter W. They are also learning about families who live in different countries,, and are also learning about different animals.   

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: These students are learning about numbers, more than, less than and  same as in Math. They enjoyed their visit from Sasha Fisher, site coordinator for the program Let’s Talk Science Classroom Visit from Grenfell College who spoke with the students on how animals find food.

Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class:  This week the grade one and two class are excited to announce they have begun learning their French Christmas carols.

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: These students are learning about estimating numbers to 100 in Math. In Social Studies they are learning about “needs” vs. “wants.” They had fun packing lots of boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: This week the Grade 2’s are learning how to count money. They would like to extend birthday wishes to Jacob Bursey who just celebrated his 8th birthday last Saturday.  

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class:  In this class the students are really excited about their fitness testing in Gym. They are having a multiplication  test on Friday.

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six class: The Grade 5’s and 6’s are getting excited about the upcoming Peace Week. Students are learning about peace in their lives, community and world. They are writing speeches and essays on the topic and are preparing for the upcoming Y.M.C.A. Speak-off.  

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: The students are making finishing touches to their roles for Skills Challenge. They are finishing up Remembrance Day essays in English. They would like to tell everyone they had a lot of fun and enjoyed themselves while leaf  raking last week.

Staff and students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School would like to express their gratitude to all members of  The Canadian Armed Forces. This week our school has been participating in activities and learning about Remembrance Day.


For the Reading Rocks, NL Art Contest, we would like to congratulate the following students: Honorable Mention for Primary: Benjamin Bellows-Davis, Katie Colbourne, Colin Sheppard, Colin Spencer and Brooke Wiseman, Honorable Mention for Elementary: Keely Brothers, Bridgett Sparkes and Gina Spencer, Honorable Mention for Junior High/Level I: Zubia Mahmood. Emma Hancock was the Primary winner, Clara Ryan was the Elementary winner and Claire Reynolds was the Junior High/Level I winner. Clara Ryan was the overall school winner. Congratulations to all participants!

This week is Veteran’s Week and on Wednesday, we sponsored a Casual Day in aid of Operation Veterans.

We would like to that thank Mr. Gillard for organizing a Healthy Commotion during lunch time on Wednesday.

On Thursday, we hosted our annual Remembrance Day Service at All Hallow’s Church. We would like to thank our invited guests and families for having attended. We would also like to thank Mr. Gillard for organizing the special service.

We would like to welcome Ms. Santana Thorne to our school. Ms. Thorne began working in our Junior Kindergarten program on Thursday. We would also like to welcome a new member, Israela Ngania, to our J.K. Program.

Recycle My Cell Challenge runs until November 15th. Please do not forgot to bring in your used cell phones!

Boys’ basketball practices for Grade 3-6 began this past week. Justin King, a Physical Education student, will practice every Wednesday with the boys from 3:00p.m.-4:00p.m.    

Class News

The Junior Kindergartens: This week the students in J.K. are learning about Remembrance Day. They would like to thank Charlene Edmunds who completed her work term today in our J.K. program. We would like to wish her the best in her future endeavours. 

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: Students are learning about the letter X. They have prepared art work for Remembrance Day and are learning about families in Social Studies.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: They would like to congratulate Emma Hancock who won the Primary Reading Rocks contest. This week they are learning about fruits, learning about Canada’s Food Guide, practicing the letter F in French, and in Science are talking about the difference between pets and wild animals.

Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class:  These students are learning about Remembrance Day. They are looking forward to taking part in our Remembrance Day Assembly on Thursday. 

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: Students in this class are also learning about Remembrance Day. As a part of Remembrance Day these students are making poppy banners. 

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: In this class the students are creating movie strips about helping the environment. They are also learning how to count money, and practicing a poem to present at the Remembrance Day assembly. 

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class:  These students are taking part in Remembrance Day by participating in the Legion Poster contest. In gym, they are doing a fitness test in Gym. The Grade 4’s have a Math test next Friday.

Ms. Neary’s grade five and six class: The students in this class really enjoyed casual day on Wednesday. They enjoyed writing poems and essays for the Legion’s Remembrance Day contest.

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: They are getting really excited for the skill challenge that is coming up soon. They are also looking at operational fractions with rational numbers in Math, what landforms in Social Studies, and the carbon oxygen cycle.

Staff and students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School had a lot of fun this week. On Wednesday, students dressed up in their scariest outfits, and enjoyed the Halloween festivities that took place in their classrooms. We hope everyone had fun and were safe trick-or-treating Wednesday night.

We would like to thank Ms. Kerri Cull, a Newfoundland author, who read to our Grade7-Level 1 students. Our students thoroughly enjoyed her readings and writing creative poetry for her. Ms. Cull visited our school as a part of our Reading Rocks, NL week.

Our student council members and student helpers along with Ms. Meade did a spooktacular job with the Haunted House. Everyone enjoyed visiting the Haunted House. Thank-you!

Recycle My Cell Challenge is still underway. Starting this week, until November 15th, if we collect 400 cell phones, Mr. Gillard will shave his head. For every cell phone you bring in, your name will be entered in a draw and the name that is drawn will be the one who shaves Mr. Gillard’s head! Please bring in your used cell phones.

Congratulations are extended to Clara Ryan who was the winner of the Good Governance Provincial Essay contest. This morning we are having an assembly celebrating our students’ successes in The Foster Family Week Provincial contest, Good Governance Essay contest, and our in-school Reading Rocks, NL Art contest.

We are excited to announce the beginning of Operation Christmas Child, which began yesterday.

The Robotics Team would like to thank Mrs. Deckert who helped them with their theme aspect of their Robotics Project for Skills Challenge.

Model Greenhouse Project: Our greenhouse has been ordered and the foundation will be finished next week for the 25ft. by 30ft. structure. Our school was the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Department of Innovation, Trade & Rural Development. This greenhouse will serve as a model. Mrs. King would like to thank the parents who came out to the meeting this past Sunday evening. If you are interested in helping with this educational project, please contact Mrs. King.

Class News

Junior Kindergarten: The J.K’s had an awesome Halloween. They enjoyed going to the gym and telling everyone what they were for Halloween.  For Art they decorated their own cupcakes and in Science they looked at pumpkins and spiders.
 
Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: They are learning about the letter V. They had a lot of fun at their Halloween party. In Science they are finishing up learning about plants and will be learning about animals soon! Mrs. Dwyer's class would like to thank Mrs. Roselie Pittman for volunteering in their class. They enjoy very much having her!

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: They had a lot of fun this week getting ready for Halloween. They liked decorating and learning Halloween songs. They had a great time at their party on Wednesday.

Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class: They also enjoyed their party on Wednesday for Halloween. They are currently working on their Remembrance Day posters.

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: These students built sets with objects up to 20 in Math class. We are asking for help from the entire school for our project “Operation Christmas Child.” We will be collecting small items to fill shoeboxes for needy children around the world. We had lots of fun this week, carving our pumpkin and celebrating Halloween!

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade Two’s are learning about healthy food choices. They found the Haunted House both scary and fun!

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class:  The students have a Social Studies term quiz next week. Students loved the Haunted House and some students even went through for a second time! The students in this class had a spooky Halloween party!

Ms. Neary’s grade Five and Six class: The students in this class had an awesome time on Wednesday afternoon, celebrating Halloween and showing off their scary costumes. They had fun decorating their classroom and going out trick-or-treating Wednesday evening. We would like to thank the many students in our class who participated in the Haunted House. We loved carving out our pumpkin!

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: They enjoyed having a guest reader come and read to them last week. They are getting really excited for the up-coming Skills Challenge in St.John’s, November 22nd-24th.
