Grade 5/6 students enjoy a Yoga session with Ms. Jessi Martin

This week students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are preparing for Easter Break.
 
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Junior High student, Arshia Kazerouni!
 
We would like to welcome Paige Marche-Sherran, a student from the College of North Atlantic, who is doing a work placement in the J.K. class.

Apple Day sponsored by the Kids Eat Smart Program was on Friday. All students hung their apple on the Apple Tree which is located in the cafeteria. Many thanks to Mrs. George for making the tree! In the Breakfast Program, we served a variety of apples, vanilla and strawberry apple parfaits and apples muffins. There were different contests and prizes were awarded.

On Friday we also celebrated Earth Hour from 9:30 a.m.-10:30a.m. where all classrooms lights, computers, and Smart Boards were shut off!

Keely Brothers, Olivia Park, Gina Spencer and Alex Williams delivered to the bank the $875 in pennies which we collected in aid of the Greenhouse. We would like to thank the Royal Bank which supplied the penny rolls and penny boxes. We are still rolling pennies. If you have some, please bring them in. We would like to thank our staff, students and our families for supporting the Cookie and Muffin Dough Fundraiser which raised almost $2,100 for the Greenhouse Project.

For the past two week Thursdays, Jessi Martin did a Yoga session with our Grade 5/6 class. Everyone really enjoyed it!

Last Friday, Junior High students participated in a public health session on the dangers of Drugs and Alcohol. On Wednesday, our J.K. classes participated in a public health session on tooth brushing and our Grade One classes had a dental session with the public health nurse.

 
 
 
 
The Grade 7 Girls’ Basketball Team played a game against Xavier on Wednesday afternoon.  

Our students took in a performance of the Easter Passion by our Prayer Group students. We would to thank Mrs. Coleman and the member of the Prayer Group.

Congratulations are extended to MacKenzie Brothers whose Cheerleading Team won a silver medal last weekend in Halifax!

The Crunch and Sip Campaign ends today but we are hoping that everyone will continue to crunch and sip for a healthy life style. 

We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter Holiday!

Class News

 
The Junior Kindergarten: The children are doing Easter Activities. They would like to thank Cory Conrad and Dorothy Gardner from Colemans at the Gardens (pictured above), who visited Mrs. English and Mrs. Vincent’s class on Friday. They did a wonderful nutritional visit. Cory introduced the children to different varieties of fruits. Cory will be visiting the two other J.K. classrooms after Easter.
  
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are creating poems and crafts for Easter. They have just begun a new Math Unit on Geometry and Measurement.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are learning about Easter and doing Easter paintings and crafts. They are looking forward to Easter holidays. In Math, they are learning about which solid shapes roll and which ones slide. They really enjoyed their time with Graham and Michael, the nursing student volunteers. They did a wonderful presentation on Nutrition and the importance of eating a healthy breakfast.  
   
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the students are starting a new unit on Numbers up to 100 and counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. They also discussed folk tales like “The Three Little Pigs.” These students are also working on autobiography presentations and are going to make smoothies for Easter to mark the end of Nutrition Month and as an alternative to chocolate and candy.
   
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students are writing Easter Bunny stories this week. They also learned about the Stations of the Cross in our Chapel. They are so excited to have Gavin and Gordon Staple’s mom, who is a dietician, in to teach them about eating healthy. Happy Easter everyone!
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in this class are starting a new unit in Math called Addition to Subtraction to 100. They are excited for their Easter party today! This week’s star student is Alyssa.
  
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade 3/4 the students are enjoying Crunch and Sip but are looking forward to an Easter treat from Ms. Payne this week. In Math they are learning about, measurement, time and money.
 
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: These students have been enjoying fun Easter activities. They are having a great time preparing for the upcoming Musical Performance of “Cinderella.”
  
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: These students are preparing for the upcoming Science competition. They are having lots of fun preparing for the Drama Festival.

Hajra Ahmad, Clara Ryan, Gina Spencer, and Sara Ismail are the winners for this years Pi Day at I.H.M.S.

This week at Immaculate Heart of Mary School has been a busy one. All students and staff have been working hard and are looking forward to spring!
  
Last Thursday, the Student Council sponsored activities for Pi Day: pie the teacher, a pie eating contest and a Pi recital. Congratulations are extended to all students who participated in the Pi Recital Contest. You did an incredible job. Hajra Ahmad recited 114 digits past the decimal place, Sara Ismail 62 digits and Gina Spencer and Clara Ryan claimed 3rd place reciting 55 digits. Mme. Mondoux’s class won the Best Team Award for the Pi Reciting Contest. We would like to thank Ms. Meade and the Student Council members on a great job! There was also a bake sale during the carnival of activities and Student Council raised $230.00 for the Greenhouse Project. We would like to thank our families, Mrs. Bev Fitzpatrick, and Ms. Erika Reid for donating pies and baked goods.
  
Friday was Green Day for St. Patrick’s Day. There was much greenery throughout the school. There were traps set out for the Leprechaun but no one was able to catch him. He visited classes leaving a mess and messages.
  
On Sunday we hosted our annual St. Patrick’s Day Family Social which was organized by two of our parents: Mrs. Trudy Brothers and Mrs. Janice Coleman. Great job, ladies! Our gym was transformed into a sea of green. We would like to thank our families for their support of the social. Congratulations are extended to Sarah Buckingham who won the door prize, Alexander Card who won the guessing game and Ava Ignor and her family who won the Best Green Dressed Family award!
  
The following students performed at the Spring Recital on Saturday evening: Will Brothers, Keely Brothers, MacKenzie Brothers, and Anna MacKenzie. They all sang beautifully!
 
On Monday evening, Will Brothers, Mackenzie Brothers, Colin Spencer and our Chamber Choir performed at the Stars of the Festival. There was an awards presentation after the performances. We would like to congratulate the following students who a $25.00 scholarship donated by Mrs. Ida Lungrigan: Will Brothers (voice), Alessandra LeBlanc (voice), Arabella LeBlanc (voice), Simon Boitsefski (voice), and Colin Spencer (piano and voice). MacKenzie Brothers was awarded a $50.00 scholarship for Musical Theatre from Theatre NL& Labrador. Our School Band was awarded a $50.00 scholarship from Carlson Wagonlit Harvey’s Travel and our Chamber Choir received a $150.00 scholarship from the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival Association. Gina Spencer was the winner of the Junior Rose Bowl. Congratulations are extended to all participants.


We would like to congratulate the Junior High class on winning the Winter Carnival Snow Sculpturing Contest for the Junior High Category. We would like to thank Mr. Hancock and Mr. Gillard for all of their help with the sculpture. On Monday evening Douglas MacKenzie and Sara Ismail accepted the award at the Winter Carnival Awards Ceremony at City Hall.

We would like to thank students from the Western Regional School of Nursing who have been working with our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes. Thank you to Amanda Barrington, Emily Major, Brittany McFatridge, Brittany Norman, Jessica Sceviour, and Ashley Smith who finished on Wednesday. We would also like to thank students; Michael Coleman, Graham Downey-Sutton, Tawsha Evoy, and Bruce Parsons who finished on Thursday.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: These children would like to thank all of the nursing students who have been helping them over the last couple weeks. They will miss you!
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are learning subtraction this week in Mathematics. They are learning about the letter S in Language Arts.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students enjoyed learning about building materials, such as metal and plastic, in Science. They are learning new words that start with the letter S.
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the students are talking about textures. They are walking around the school rubbing different textures onto paper. They are planning on going outside and looking at natural textures and what makes them that way. This week the students also discussed forgiveness in Religion and about fruits and vegetables for nutrition month.
  
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students are writing Easter stories this week. They are comparing masses in Math class.
  
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in this class are completing Easter themed writing. They are learning what liquids are like and even had a liquid running race in Science. This week the star student is William.
  
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade 3/4 the students are finishing up their unit on Fractions. They have been learning about clothing in French. The students are looking forward to a French vocabulary race.
  
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: The Grade 6’s have been busy completing Process Writing. The Grade 5’s are really enjoying their novel study. The class would like to congratulate Gina Spencer on winning the Rose Bowl at this year’s Musical Festival.
   
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: These students are beginning to prepare for the All Science Challenge and are video chatting with a school in Ontario as part of their Twinning Project. They are excited for the upcoming Drama Festival.

This week students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are enjoying many fun activities and the nice warm weather!

This past weekend we hosted the Girls’ Grade 5 Western Provincial Basketball Tournament. We would like to thank our parents, teachers and students for their help and support. The girls would like to thank their coach, Mrs. Bishop. Megan Williams, Caylie Blake, Emma Doman and Bridgett Sparkes received Player of the Game Awards. Congratulations to all participants.
Anna Brake, Claire Blake and Abigail Woodford participated in the Junior Provincial Figure Skating Competition held in Corner Brook over the weekend. Anna Brake won a silver medal in the Pre-Juvenile Ladies Category. Claire and Abigail performed well at the competition, Abigail sang O’Canada at the Opening Ceremonies. Congratulations, girls!
Congratulations are extended to the following students who completed the ten week Kids Camp Program at Marble Mountain; Mariam Ahmad, Jasmine Batstone, Claire Brake, Darcy Brake, Sarah Buckingham, Alexander Card, Benjamin Card, Jakson Ganz, Yazan Ismail, Coen Mackey, Kate Murphy, Oliver Sullivan, William Sullivan, Charlotte Sweetapple, and Abigail Woodford.
Students from Corner Brook Regional High, S.W.A.T. (Students Working Against Tobacco), presented to our Grade 5 students. They found the presentation very informative. 
Our Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Primary, School Choir, and Chamber Choir performed in the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival this week and all sang heart fully. Congratulations to all members and Mr. Graham. The Grade 5 and Grade 6/7 Band also performed in the festival and played their very difficult pieces extremely well. Congratulations to our musicians and to Mrs. McHugh.
We have many students who are performing in the Festival this week. We wish them the best of luck in all of their events!
On Monday afternoon, Stephanie Ganz, Autumn Gale, Jennifer Houstice, from the Department of Agriculture read to our 3, 4 and 5 classes. This was in conjunction with Canadian Agriculture Literacy Week.
Last week was Milk Spirit Week and on Friday, we held our Annual Moo-Off Competition. Individual winners in the Moo-Off were: Emma Barrett, Ryan Bennett, Brandon Brake, Heather Cooper, Gavin Doman, Rotém Phillips-Grobbelaar, Eli Hamilton, Lucas Neville, Simon Boitsefski, Ryan Lombard, Israela Ngania, Chenoah Park, Aria Kazerouni, Brooke Watton, Megan Williams, and Riley Wilton. Best group winners were: Avery Brothers and Clare Coleman, Keely Brothers and Alex Williams. Jayden Lemprière was the best overall winner.
Our school is the recipient of a $500.00 Wellness Grant for our Model Greenhouse Project. Last week, the Department of Agriculture donated $500.00 worth of in-kind items to the project. We are working very hard in fundraising for this very educational project. We appreciate our families’, staff and community support.
We held a Pi Day yesterday. Student had lots of fun reciting as many digits of Pi they could remember and “pieing” their favourite teachers in aid of our Greenhouse Project. What fun!
In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, Friday we will be having a wear all you can Green Day!
This Sunday, our school will be hosting its’ annual St. Patrick’s Day Social from 5-7p.m.
 
Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: These children would like to thank Mr. Bruce Grobbelaar for donating child size soccer balls to their program. They had a lot of fun this week in preparing for St. Patrick’s Day.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are learning subtraction this week in Mathematics. They are learning about the letter R in Language Arts. They would also like to mention they had loads of fun when they participated in the Music Festival.

In Math they are learning about the shapes 3D solid can make like cubes, cylinders, spheres, and cones. They are learning new words that start with the letter R. 
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the Grade Ones are learning about capacity in Math. They had a lot of fun preparing for Pi Day with activities and games. In Grade Two, the students had fun learning spring vocabulary and learning about different trades and professions.
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students are writing Easter stories this week. They are comparing masses in Math class.
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in this class are learning about liquids in Science. This week they learned 30 digits in Pi, and their star student is Makayla Ianni.
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade 3/4 the students are excited to announce they had a letter from a student in Richmond, B.C. inviting them to participate in the “Great Canadian Mail Race.” The Grade Four class have started learning about fractions in Math.
 
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: The Grade 5/6 had a lot of fun on Pi Day when they had the opportunity to “pie” their teachers. All of the students loved playing in the Band during the Music Festival.
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: These students are beginning to prepare for the upcoming Drama Festival. They had a lot of fun this week participating in the Music Festival!

Students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School had tons of educational fun this week. This week all students are enjoying the beginning of Nutrition Month, as they chomp down on crunchy apples and replenish with water during work in the afternoon.
Congratulations are extended to Caylie Blake who won a gold medal in the Juvenile Under-11. Category at the Provincial Figure Skating Championship held in Clarenville this past weekend.
We would like to congratulate Keely Brothers who did really well at the Titans Trampoline Competition in Dartmouth this past weekend. Keely placed 8th on Beam and Vault, 2nd on Bars, 4th on Floor with an overall 6th place ranking.
We would also like to congratulate Hannah Sparkes who earned her yellow belt in Tae Kwando.
On Friday morning our Grade 7 class started Nutrition Month by showing a cereal video they made. The video was about the positive effects a healthy choice has on our health performance. Daily nutrition broadcasts are also taking place from our media center. This is also Milk Spirit week and our students are also doing nutritional facts on the importance of drinking milk. In-class activities have also taken place. Today we are having our annual Moo-off Competition in the gymnasium at lunch time.
  
Bridge Building Competition

 

 

 

On Saturday, our Grade 7-9 students participated in the Building the Bridge Competition at the Corner Brook Plaza. Our students had some terrific results and placing will be released at a later date from the Provincial Committee. Lucas Neville, a Grade 2 French Immersion student, built his own bridge and participated in a non competitive manner. Great job, Lucas! Congratulations to everyone who participated.
On, Monday we hosted our Annual Mid Term Assembly honouring student successes. Perfect Attendance and Perfect Spelling Certificates were awarded and Honours and Distinctions Certificates were awarded to our Junior High students.
M.H.A. Mr. Vaughn Granter presented to our Junior High student Tuesday morning in conjunction with their Twinning Project with a school in Ontario. Wednesday afternoon the students were on Skype with their school in Ontario.
Mr. Barry Ferguson of the University of Waterloo spent Tuesday afternoon with our Grade 7-9 students doing a Mathematic Problem solving session.
Primary and Elementary Report Cards were distributed on Wednesday. Junior High Reports were distributed in February. Parent/Teacher night was held Thursday evening.
Tuesday was World Spelling Day, Wednesday was World Math Day and Thursday was World Science Day.   
The Cookie & Muffin Fundraiser is due today. All proceeds are in aid of our Model Greenhouse Project. 
This weekend we are hosting the Western Provincial Girls’ Grade 5 Basketball Tournament. Our girls play their first game at 3:00p.m.
The Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival begins tomorrow. Our choirs are performing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On bands will perform on Monday. The information concerning times and place were sent home last week.
 
Class News
The Junior Kindergarten: These children are getting ready for St. Patrick’s Day. The children are also being taught how to follow directions in Language Arts.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are learning about Ants in Science, the letter P in Language Arts. They are eating healthy snacks as a part of the Crunch and Sip campaign. They would like to congratulate Carter Bromley on the arrival of his new baby sister.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are learning about 2D shapes and 3D solids in Math. They are learning about words that start with the letter Qq. In Science, they are learning about the materials that are used to make toys, and reviewing parts of the body in Language Arts.
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the students had fun doing Science experiments in celebration for World Science Day. They are having fun making several St. Patrick’s Day crafts.
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students are learning about St. Patrick’s Day through writing and crafts. They are also learning about healthy eating for Nutrition Month. They loved participating in World Math and World Science days with children in different countries.
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in this class are enjoying playing against other students around the world for World Spelling Day, World Math Day and World Science Day. They are having fun starting a new chapter in Math called Measurement, and in Language Arts are starting Student of the Week writing. This week Isaac is our Star Student!
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade 3/4 the students are having fun playing badminton in Phys. Ed. 
 
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: The Grade 5/6 is having fun this week creating directional videos. They are really excited about their novel study of “Bridge to Terabithia” and the girls are really excited to play basketball this weekend. 
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: These students enjoyed their presentation from MHA Vaughn Granter. They enjoyed solving interesting Math problems. They are now busy preparing for the Music Festival, in Choir and Band.
