Colin Spencer and Jacob Bursey, Alyssa Taylor and MaKayla Ianni from Ms. Park’s Grade2 Class hold chicks that hatched from incubated eggs. Their class have been taking care of these eggs over the past few weeks.

 
June is almost here and students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School have been practicing and performing their spring musical “Cinderella.” We would like to thank Mr. Gary Graham and the I.H.M.S staff for the work they did with students to prepare the play. We would also like to thank Mr. Glenn Simms for painting our set. Thank you to Mr. Max Simms who provided the sound equipment and Mr. Scott Reynolds for the beautiful programs. We would finally like to thank our loving families for all of their support (see pictures below).


 


   
 
 



 
 

 
 
 




 
 


This week the Grade 3’s and Grade 6’s have been very busy writing their Provincial Language Arts Assessment. They will write their Math Assessment next week.
  
The 19 chicks that have been taken care of by the Grade Two class left on Monday. They are gone to a farm in Hughes Brook.
  
The Junior High Students participated in a Virtual Media Festival on Tuesday morning. All of our classes watched the live feed. Hajra Ahmad, Will Goodridge, Sarah Ismail, Arshia Kazerouni and Hannah Sparkes participated in the Photography Category, Nathan Anderson and Douglas MacKenzie participated in the Animation Division. We had two teams in Videography who produced and made a video on the environment. The two teams consisted of MacKenzie Brothers and Maria Reynolds, Zubia Mahmood and Claire Reynolds.
  
The Boys’ Soccer Team played an exhibition on Tuesday at St. Gerard.
  
We would like to thank Msgr. Gale for the beautiful service on Sunday morning for Avery Brothers, Jacob Bursey, Clare Coleman, Heather Cooper, MaKayla Ianni, Aria Kazerouni, and Colin Spencer, who received their First Holy Communion. We would like to thank the parents and families for sharing in the celebration.
  
We would like to thank Mr. Dave Jennings and Mrs. Robyn Dillman from the Department of Agriculture who did some planting in our Greenhouse this week. We would like to thank the Department of Agriculture for their generous start up donations!
  
Today we are collecting for the Janeway Telethon. Classes will be placing their donations in the Wishing Well located in the Main Entrance.
  
Upcoming Events
  
On Monday, June 3rd, our school will be holding an Art Exhibit. This art show will consist of students’ work from this year and will take place 6:30p.m.-7:30p.m.
  
The Grade 3 Reconciliation will take place on Wednesday, June 5th at All Hallow’s Church starting at 7:00p.m.
  
Next week the Kindergarten Graduation will take place on Thursday, June 6th at 6:00p.m. in our gymnasium.  
 
The Junior Kindergarten: The children have been learning their numbers, getting ready for the play and Art Show.
  
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students had fun performing in “Cinderella” and are learning to tell time to the hour.
  
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are counting sets of numbers up to 7 and learning how to subtract. They are practicing how to say what they want to be when they grow up for their graduation. They are also reviewing all the letters in the alphabet.
  
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: These students are studying movement in Science and observing our butterflies daily. The butterflies are starting to silk and turn into chrysalis.
  
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One Class is working on a special writing project called “Wonderful Me.” They are now finished their spelling tests for the year! Every student did a fabulous job! In Math, they are adding and subtracting larger numbers. They had a GREAT time performing in “Cinderella” this week.
  
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class finished learning about the life cycle of a chicken. They had 19 little chicks hatch! They are making shapely critters in Art to go along with their Math lessons.
   
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: These students are preparing for their year end Art Show. They have been doing “fun Math games” since both grades have completed their Math objectives.
  
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students had a great time performing in the spring musical. They are now practicing hard in Band for the year end assembly.
  
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students had a great time performing in “Cinderella.” They were really happy to share their hard work from the Virtual Reality contest with the rest of the school.

Students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary had a great long-weekend and are now refreshed and ready to take on the rest of the school year!

We hosted our annual Science Fair on Friday afternoon. The projects were incredible! We would like to congratulate all participants. The top projects were Ryan Murphy (Grade 3), Sam Antle, Max Chrappa and Rogan Seaward (Grade 4), Anna MacKenzie, Clara Ryan and Gina Spencer (Grade 5), Alex Williams (Grade 6), Hajra Ahmad and Maria Reynolds (Grade  7). We would like to thank our judges: Mr. Mark Fitzpatrick, Mr. Cecil Lake and Mr. Chris Wellman. Congratulations to all participants!

On Tuesday evening, we hosted our annual Junior High Speak-off. Participants were (L-R): Sara Ismail, Zubia MahmoodMaria Reynolds, MacKenzie Brothers, Nathan Anderson, Arshia Kazerooni, Douglas MacKenzie, Hannah Sparkes, Claire Reynolds, and Hajra Ahmad. Hannah was selected as the winner. All speeches were excellent! We would like to thank our judges: Ms. Bernice Hillier, Mr. Peter Hiscock and Ms. Margaret Noseworthy.

On Wednesday morning, Newfoundland author, Mr. Don Downer, presented to our Grade 3 students. This was in conjunction with his Hackmatack Award nomination for his book “Selby the Lobster.” The class really enjoyed his presentation.

Wednesday afternoon we hosted orientation sessions for our new Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten children. Registration for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten, both full day programs is ongoing. For more information please contact the office regarding our full day Junior Kindergarten & Kindergarten Programs as well as any of our programs.

This Sunday, our Grade 2 children will be receiving their First Holy Communion. The service will take place at 10:30 a.m. at All Hallow’s Church. All are welcome to attend.

Next week our students will be performing their production of the musical “Cinderella.” Performances will take place on May 29th and 30th  in our school gymnasium. There will be a morning matinee at 10:30 a.m. and the evening show will take place at 7:00p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The cost is $5.00 per person.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: The children really liked going to their orientation for Kindergarten on Wednesday. They are having lots of fun practicing for the musical.
  
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are looking forward to Grade One orientation. They are learning about the earth and the moon in Science, and graphing in Math.
  
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are counting up to 100 in French. Also, they learned about different ways to make groups of 6. In Science, they are talking about soil (how plants grow and what lives under the ground.
  
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: In Grade One the students have started their last unit in Math. They are studying geometry and recognizing shapes in the world around them. They are learning about their heart and their lungs and how to stay healthy. In Grade Two the students are studying the life cycle of butterflies. They are currently observing larvae grow into Chrysalis. In Math, they are studying double digit subtraction.
      
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One class is learning about shapes and discovering different ones in Math. They are making mini booklets called “Wonderful Me.” They are writing about themselves and their friends. In Social Studies they are drawing pictures of climate change.
   
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class is observing larvae. The whole school is excited to see their chicks hatch! In Math, they are learning about 2D shapes. This week the Student of the Week is Jacob!
  
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade Three the students are excited to announce they have received a letter from Hopedale, Labrador with Flat Stanley inside. They have taken pictures with Flat Stanley and read the book.
  
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students have been busy preparing for the production of the musical “Cinderella.” This week the students have been working and studying hard and are excited to be cluing up spelling tests for the year.
   
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students had a great time sharing their speeches with everyone on Tuesday night. They are busy finishing courses before their exams and have been busy helping decorate our Greenhouse! They would like to thank Dulux Paints for having donated the paint for the Greenhouse benches.

Mrs. King and students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School visit another primary/elementary school named Le Feu Rouge in St. Pierre
 
Students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are really excited to move into the last month of school. Summer is just around the corner!
Last Sunday, we celebrated Mother’s Day. We would like to thank all of our mothers for their hard work and guidance.
Congratulations are extended to McKenna Batstone, Caylie Blake, Anna Brake, Claire Brake, Olivia Park and Abigail Woodford who passed their figure skating tests this past weekend.
Congratulations are extended to Ben Griffin who placed 2nd at the Mud Slide Bike Race on Sunday.
We would like to congratulate our whole school on being the recipients of the ACE Award for Green Learning. This award was presented at the City of Corner Brook ACE Awards banquet on Wednesday night. Thank you to all of our students, teachers and families that make our recycling initiatives so successful!
On Wednesday, our Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes participated in a Learn not to Burn Session. Mr. Tom Yetman did an excellent job, thank you!
On Wednesday, our Grade 7 students wrote the Gauss Math Exam.
On Thursday, Kindergarten to Grade 2 classes attended the ‘Robert Munsch’ production at the Arts and Culture Center.
Today we are hosting our annual Science Fair. The public viewing is from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
The group who travelled to St. Pierre had a lot of wonderful experiences. They visited City Hall and met the Mayor. They also had tours of a printing place, a primary and elementary school, the boulangerie. They really enjoyed their bus tour, visit to the boutiques, swimming and pastry shops. They would like to thank the families who accompany them.  
Congratulations are extended to Gina Spencer who is the provincial winner of the Junior Essay Category for the 2012 Royal Canadian Legion Literacy Contest.
Congratulations are extended to Megan and Alex Williams on the birth of their brother, Owen.
Please do not forget to recycle this month for the Breakfast Program.
We are still collecting pennies for our Greenhouse Project and have almost reached $1,000.00.
 
Class News
 
The Junior Kindergarten: The children would like to thank the Phillipps-Grobbelaar family for donating costumes to their classrooms. They are printing numbers and getting ready for the Science Fair.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are very excited about the Science Fair on Friday and our field trip to see Robert Munsch on Thursday. They also enjoyed their presentation on Fire Saftey.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are learning about primary and secondary colours in Art. They made colour wheels and are learning about their sense of smell in Science. They are going to prepare posters showing their favourite smells for the Science Fair.
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: In Grade One the students have started a new unit in geometry. They are learning about shapes in Science and Art. In Grade Two, the students are learning about acrostic poems and how words change when they become plural in Language Arts.  
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One class is having fun with tangrams as they replicate shapes. They are learning about maps in Social Studies and have been carrying out more experiments for their Science Fair today!
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class is learning about movement in Science. They had so much fun making 2-wheelers and having races to see which ones could go the furthest. This week the student of the week is Arabella.
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade Three the students are finishing their Math workbooks. In Social Studies they are drawing on pillow cases and in P.E. they are playing ultimate frisbee. In Grade Four the students are doing division in Math. In Language Arts they are learning about different forms of communication.
 
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students had a great week preparing for their Science Fair on Friday. They are learning about prepositions in Grammar.
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students are finishing their virtual media festival projects. They are currently preparing for their exams.

Summer quickly approaches and students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary are enjoying the sun!

We would like to welcome to our school office Ms. Sarah Brake who is doing a work placement for six weeks.

On Thursday our Junior High Students participated in the All Canadian Science Challenge. The team of Hajra Ahmad, Nathan Anderson, MacKenzie Brothers, and Maria Reynolds took first place at the competition. Congratulations are extended to all students on their performance. Many thanks are extended to Mr. Hancock for helping prepare them.

We are collecting recyclables for our Breakfast Program. All recycling during the month of May will be in aid of our Breakfast Program.

Hajra Ahmad, Keely Brothers, Mira Ismail, Sara Ismail, Maria Reynolds, Clara Ryan, and Olivia Park participated in the Western Regional Heritage Fair on Saturday.

Mr. Graham will receive his Honorary Degree of Law today. Our school community would like to congratulate him on this most deserved recognition.

MacKenzie Brothers participated in a Cheerleading Competition this weekend in St. John’s. They had a great turnout!

Caylie Blake participated in a Seminar this past weekend in St. John’s.

On Monday, the Prayer Group hosted a celebration for the May Crowning. We would like to thank Mrs. Coleman and the members of the Prayer Group.

Our students really enjoyed their trip to St. Pierre!

Thursday was World Catholic Day and we collected a toonie per person for the Toonies for Tuition.

 
Class News

 
The Junior Kindergarten: The children have been busy creating crafts for Mother’s Day. They have also been busy creating a display for World Catholic Day!

 

Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are learning about timelines in Social Studies.  They have been experimenting with heavy vs. light in Science.

 

Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are talking about their neighborhoods in Social Studies. In Art, they are making colour wheels and learning about heavier, lighter and the same weight!

 

Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: These students are learning how to alphabetize their names, how to identify verbs in their readers, and reading aboriginal legends.

 

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One Class is busy making Mother’s Day cards and crafts. They are getting ready for the Science Fair next week.

 

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class are busy practicing for their First Holy Communion. They are also creating their own “Where the Wild Things Are” stories. They are learning about aboriginals in Social Studies.

 

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Social Studies, the students are preparing to create their own version of the Newfoundland Flag. The weather has been beautiful, and the students have really enjoyed using the outdoor classroom!

 

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students are busy practicing for the Spring Musical. They are also busy preparing for the Science Fair next week!

 

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students had a great time at the All Canadian Science Challenge. They are now looking forward to the Science Fair.
