Summer vacation is here! Student and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School would like to wish everyone a safe and fun summer!

On Monday, our school hosted a surprise tribute to Mr. Graham on his Honorary Degree of Laws. We would like to thank Mr. Gillard who organized the tribute, and to all our staff and students who helped with the event. Community members also took part in the celebration, performing for Mr. Gary Graham 

Congratulations are extended to Will Goodridge who participated in the Amalgamated Virtual Media Festival and placed 2nd in the Photography and to Zubia Mahmood and Claire Reynolds who placed 2nd in video.
We would like to congratulate Chloe Colbourne, Hailey Colbourne and Alex Williams who participated in the Hershey Track and Field in St. John’s this past weekend. The girls did well and had a fun weekend. 
This past Monday, our school held an In-school Elementary Spelling Bee. The winners were Sam Antle (Grade 4), Keely Brothers (Grade5), and Hailey Colbourne in (Grade 6). We would like to thank Ms. Neary who organized this event.
We would like to thank Memorial University, Grenfell Campus who donated computers and monitors to our Computer Lab.
Thank-you to Mr Gillard for organizing our Sports Day. Thank you to The Tin Man for supplying the BBQ and to our parents who cooked for us.
Last week, Jack and Clara Ryan participated in the Arthur James Fun Run. Congratulations to Jack who placed first and to Clara and her Mom who ran the whole way together!
We conducted our Year-end Assembly on Wednesday morning. We would like to congratulate all of our students for a successful academic year. We would like to thank our bands and choir who performed at the assembly.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten: The J.K’s enjoyed their Sports Day and loved their Teddy Bear Picnic Party. These children made books for Mr. Graham and Monsignor Gale.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students were really excited about Sports Day activities. They made cards for Mr. Graham and Monsignor Gale.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week the students had a lot of fun at Sports Day. They also had a lot of fun preparing a song for Mr. Graham’s Celebration assembly on Monday afternoon. They would like to wish everyone a safe and fun summer!
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: The Grade 1 and 2 French Immersion classes are very excited for summer vacation! They had a great last day. The Sports Day was so much fun. At their party, during the afternoon, they had a scavenger hunt. Each team was rewarded with a loot bag when they solved the riddle.
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One Class had a ball on Sports Day. They would like to thank Mr. Gillard for preparing this for them. They would also like to wish everyone a safe and happy summer!
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class had a lot of fun during Sports Day. They were also very excited to receive their Student of The Week Booklets that their friends wrote about them. Have a great summer, everyone!
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: This class is very excited to have some time off to enjoy summer vacation. Their class party and class awards were done on Tuesday. Thank you to all who brought in treats! Ms. Payne would like to wish her class a safe and happy summer. It was a great year teaching you all!
 
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students had a busy week preparing for the Year-end Assembly. They had a blast at the Sports Day and really enjoyed their classroom party. They really liked performing one of Mr. Graham’s favourite songs at his assembly on Monday. Have a great summer everyone!
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students were happy to finish their exams on Monday morning. On Tuesday, they participated in Sports Day. Along with the Grade 6’s and some of the Grade 5’s, the Junior High Band played in our closing assembly on Wednesday morning.

The sun is shining and Students and Staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are getting excited for the end of the school year!
We would like to extend best wishes to Sarah Brake who finishes her work placement in our office today.
Congratulations are extended to Chloe Colbourne who won a Perfect Attendance Award for Guides at their annual banquet and to Hailey Colbourne who flew up from Guides to Pathfinders. Hailey also received an Exceptional Attendance Award as well as a Leadership Award. Congratulations are also extended to Brooklynn Colbourne, Rebecca Janes, Emma Barrett who “flew up” from Sparkes to Brownies, and Charlotte Sweetaple went from Sparkes to Guides. Rebecca was also awarded the Friendship Award at their annual Sparkes banquet.       
Congratulations are extended to Reyd Ward who won the ACAP Environment Art Challenge for the Primary level. Reyd won a helmet and a bike that were donated by NL Light and Power.
Congratulations are extended to Issac Buckingham who won the Most Spirited Player Award at the Stephenville Spring Under 8 Soccer Tournament.
Congratulations are extended to Noah Evans who achieved his yellow belt in Karate this past weekend. And to Colin Spencer who received his green belt at Karate on Wednesday evening
Congratulations are extended to the following students who were Regional Winners for the YMCA Market Your Thoughts Essay Contest; Nathan Anderson, Sara Ismail, Douglas MacKenzie, Maria Reynolds, and Hannah Sparkes (Grade 7), Will Goodridge (Grade 8), and Zubia Mahmood and Claire Reynolds (Grade 9).  
Our school is the recipient of a $400 Colemans gift card from the Colemans Kids Eat Healthy Program. This generous donation will be used for the Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program that operates daily at the school.
We would like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Wayne Allen for bringing the School Golf Session to Immaculate Heart last week. On Thursday and Friday all classes at IHMS had the opportunity to hone their skills in putting and chipping. Some students even had the chance to drive a few golf balls at their Phys. Ed teacher while wearing the special target suit! If parents would like more information about the summer golf program for young children you can contact Mr. Gillard at the school for more information.
On Tuesday, the Student Council sponsored a Dress-up Day and on Thursday we hosted a Pyjama Day. On Pyjama Day students once again jumped for good reason at IHMS. Students joined in the gymnasium in bright coloured PJ’s and skipped, bounced and jumped in aid of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Fun was had by all and each student got to leave with their very own skipping rope!
 
Class and group photos were taken on Wednesday.
Our Junior High students began their exams this week. They conclude on Monday, June 17th.
We would like to wish best of luck to Chloe Colbourne, Hailey Colbourne, Alex Williams, and Megan Williams who will be competing in the Hershey Track and Field Competition in St. John’s on Saturday. 
 
Upcoming Events
 
On Monday, we will be hosting our annual year end elementary Spelling Bee.
Tuesday, staff will be hosting a school wide breakfast from 7:30a.m. - 8:30p.m. Our Sports Day will take place at Prince Edward Park.
On Wednesday, our families are invited to our year end Mass and Awards Assembly. All are welcome to attend
This Sunday is Father’s Day! We would like to wish all of our dads a wonderful day!

Class News
 
The Junior Kindergarten: The J.K’s are having lots of fun this week preparing cards for Father’s Day. They are also having a Teddy Bear Picnic.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students really liked getting dressed up for the Dress-up day! They are learning to tell the time to 30 min. and 1 hour. They are also finishing their work on Graphing.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week the students are learning about different modes of transportation in Social Studies this week. They are talking about water and boating safety in Health. They are cluing up their Math unit on Numbers 1-10 and practicing making different groups of ten with coloured cubes. We are all looking forward to the summer break which is just around the corner. We have worked very hard this year and all deserve a relaxing break.
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: The Grade 1&2 French Immersion classes wrote their very own stories for their first time! They sounded out all of their words and used resources to find the words they needed. They have been working towards this all year. Their butterflies are starting to hatch! They have 4 out of 15! So exciting! In Science they will be setting up pullies to lift each other . In Grade1 the students went on a field trip to the park with Mme. Ryan. They also have been working on a Giant Panda Project as a part of the WWF’s Schools for a Living Planet Project
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One Class is finishing  their Wonderful Me Projects. They are learning about living things in Science and finishing  their Math work. They want to wish their fathers a very Happy Father’s Day!
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class are working on their Dinosaur projects. These students are learning how to do research and how to write reports.
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: This class have been playing base ball in Phys. Ed. Today they will be attending a field trip to the Insectarium.
  
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students are attending the Insectarium today. They are looking forward to the Elementary Spelling Bee on Monday!
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students are happy their exams are almost over!! They are looking forward to summer vacation and their field trip to Bonne Bay Pond.

Students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary have been enjoying the outdoors. More classes are heading outside to our outdoor classroom as the weather gets warmer. This week is World Environment Week. Wednesday was World Environment Day and Mr. Blaine Hussey from the Department of Agriculture facilitated sessions in our greenhouse for our students.
Our school is the recipient of a $5,000 Provincial Wellness Grant for our Model Greenhouse Project.
We would like to thank the many families who came out and supported our Art Show on Monday evening.The show featured a variety of pieces of Art that was done though out the year by our students from J.K. to Grade 9.
Sadie MacDonnell, a Grade 1 student, cut her hair this past week and donated it to The Canadian Cancer Society.
Our school hosted our annual Kindergarten Graduation for our English and French Immersion classes on Thursday evening. Congratulations!
Last week, Mira Ismail participated in a Mock City Council Meeting in conjunction with the What Would You Do If You Were the Mayor for a Day writing contest. Congratulations Mira!
Congratulations are extended to Ryan Lombard who won the Wildlife Poster Contest for Grade1 for the Humber Valley Region.
We would like to congratulate Nathan Anderson, Will Goodridge, and Douglas MacKenzie who won first place in the Western Region for the Building a Bridge Competition and to MacKenzie Brothers, Claire Reynolds and Maria Reynolds who placed third!
Madison Canning from Junior High Ventures presented to our Junior High students Wednesday afternoon.
Beth Arsenault, Ryan Bennett, Darcy Brake, Ryan Murphy, Charlotte Sweetapple and Megan Williams celebrated their first Reconciliation on Wednesday evening. We would like to thank Msgr. Gale who officiated and the teachers who helped at the celebration.
We would like to congratulate Alaura Alexander, McKenna Batstone, Keely Brothers, Chloe Colbourne, Hailey Colbourne, Mira Ismail, Madison Noel, Gina Spencer and Alex Williams who received Excellence Certificates and prizes from the YMCA for their Logos in the Elementary Create-A-Logo Contest.
We would like to congratulate the following students who were the regional winners in the YMCA Essay Writing Contest. Nathan Anderson, Sara Ismail, Douglas MacKenzie, Maria Reynolds, and Hannah Sparkes (Grade7), Will Goodridge (Grade8), Zubia Mahmood & Claire Reynolds (Grade9). The received a monetary award and prizes.
The members of the Prayer Group would like to Mrs. Coleman a very Happy Birthday on June 8th.
 
Saturday is World Ocean’s Day and we would like to congratulate Eli Hamilton who is the provincial winner in the Kindergarten Category for the World Ocean’s Day Contest.     
 
Class News
  
The Junior Kindergarten: The J.K’s are doing lower case alphabet. They are also making lady bugs for the greenhouse. They are making cards for Father’s Day.
  
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students celebrated their graduation on Thursday and also enjoyed showing their art work to their families.
  
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week the students were busy practicing songs for the Kindergarten Graduation Thursday night. They are colouring maps and talking about where they live in Social Studies. They are practicing more subtraction problems with objects in Math.
  
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: The Grade 1&2 French Immersion classes are very excited this week. The beans and peas they planted are ready to go in the greenhouse!
  
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One Class is learning about plant parts in Science and planting seeds in our new greenhouse this week! They are creating and solving story problems in Math. They are really excited to be going to Mrs. George’s house for a party tomorrow.  
   
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade 2 English class finished their unit on geometry in Math. They had lots of fun showing our families their fabulous Art work at the Art Show. This week the student of the week is Aria.
  
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: Today this class will be attending a Ducks Unlimited Tour. They will be learning about conservation, restoring and managing wet lands. Next Friday, June 14th, the Grade  3/4 class will be visiting the Insectarium.
  
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: Grade 5/6 students had a lot of fun planting seeds in the new greenhouse. They had a lot of fun in Language Arts writing about their favourite memories of this past school year.   
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High Class: The Junior High Students are preparing for their exams, starting next week. They really enjoyed the Youth Ventures presentation and had a lot of fun planting in the greenhouse.
