This week Denise Graham our public health nurse did a presentation on non-smoking for the grades 3 to 6 students as part of Non-Smoking Week. Our junior high class also participated in non-smoking week by making a radio ad.  These students were: Hajra Ahmad, Caroline Bruce-Roberston, Douglas MacKenzie, and Maria Reynolds. Great job, everyone!

The junior high and level 1 students are starting their exams today. They are doing their language exam today.  We wish them good luck!

Last Friday the grade 6 girls’ basketball team had a game at Templeton. Thank you to Mrs. Foley and Ms. Scott for accompanying the students. They are playing another game against Templeton after school today in our school gym!

Ms. Victoria White from the Kids Eat Smart foundation visited our school breakfast program this past Tuesday.

This week our whole school is selling Winter Carnival buttons. The cost is $3 per button.  We hope everyone gets one.

We are collecting used books of all kinds (children, adult, recipe books, etc.) for a used book sale to take place during our Family Literacy Night on January 27. For each book a student donates they will receive a ballot to win a free new book at our February Scholastic Book Fair!

Stars of The Week

We would like to congratulate Anna Brake, Claire Brake and Abigail Woodford who skated last week in the 2014 Western Division Competition held in Stephenville. Anna brake placed 6th in the Stars Girls Under 13 and qualified for the provincial tournament for the Western Skating team. Claire Brake and Abigail Woodford both received their report cards earning bronze standard.
Congratulations to our students who participated in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition on Saturday. They were: Hajra Ahmad, Makenzy Bishop, Mira Ismail, Sara Ismail and Telicia Young.  Hajra finished first place in the 13 and under category while Sara Ismail placed second. Mira Ismail placed first in the under 12 category. Both Hajra and Mira get to participate in the provincials this weekend.
Class News
 
The junior kindergarten classes are busy this week learning all about penguins and enjoying the new snow we have!

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is having lots of fun recycling and learning about the environment. They’ve been practicing mindfulness this week. They have been making much better decisions thanks to their prefrontal cortex.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is starting the MindUp curriculum this week and learning all about how their brains work. They are working on the letters “k” and “y”. In science they are studying life cycles.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is finishing up their numbers unit in math. They have started learning about predicting in science experiments and freezing and melting. It was Ben Bellows – Davis’s birthday on Monday. Happy 6th Birthday, Ben!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been learning about the parts of the body and the digestive system. They have been talking a lot about healthy food choices and what we need to stay healthy. The children are very excited to learn about this and are even discussing it at recess and lunch!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about sounds that things make in science. They are making story cubes in religion with their favourite stories about Jesus.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about solids, liquids, and gases. They are also learning about technology from the past and having fun making catching snow flake pictures.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class are learning a French secret code. When they have words that are plural with an “s” but the “s” is not pronounced it is part of the secret code.  In science class they are learning about structures. They will need to make tests to answer the question: what material is best for building. They are doing lots of experiments to find the answer. The grade 3 students really enjoyed having Mme. LaChance go skiing with them on Tuesday!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class had a great time at their second cross country skiing class. Everyone is showing a lot of improvement already. They are looking forward to Family Literacy Night on Monday from 6-7 pm.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is learning a new version of volleyball in gym class called Nitro Ball. The grade 5 students have started a novel study on the book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and made dream catchers in math. The grade 6 students are reading all about space in language and learning about ratios in math.

Ms. Jones’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy this week preparing for exams. They are very sad to say goodbye to Wesley Calvalcante who is returning to Brazil on Wednesday morning. Everyone will miss him!
