The grade 6 boys’ basketball team participated in a tournament last weekend at J.J. Curling School. Thank you to Mr. Ryley Nadon and Ms. Danielle Wamboldt for coaching the team. Also on the weekend, the junior high to level 1 class participated in the Winter Carnival Chili Cook Off on Saturday at Margaret Bowater Park. There were lots of great chilies to taste and the students had a lot of fun preparing for the cook off. They would like to thank Nathan Anderson, Arista White and Maria Reynolds who represented the class at the cook off.
On Wednesday of this week we wore pink t-shirts to support bullying awareness day. The Corner Brook Rotary Club donated $500 in books to our school this week! Rotarians, local celebrities and volunteers visited our school to talk about the importance of reading and read some of the new books to our students. It was a great day! Thank you to the Rotarians, local celebrities and volunteers for visiting our school.
Our school Scholastic Book Fair Family night was hosted on Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30 pm. The book fair continued throughout the week with classroom visits for book purchases. Thank you to Mrs. George and her team of teachers for all their hard work. Also, thank you to Mr. Bryan McCarthy for volunteering during the family night.
On Thursday, the junior high to Level 1 class hosted some fun Winter Carnival activities in the gym and outside in the snow. Students and staff had a great time celebrating with each other.
Our school hosted the annual Winter Carnival Spelling Bee in our school on Thursday evening. Students in grades four to six were challenged to spell some very difficult words. Congratulations to all the students who participated in this event. Also, thank you to our judges Mrs. Janet Joyce and Mr. Jonathan Turner, and organizers Ms. Krista Park and Mrs. Angel McCarthy.
This week we welcome a new volunteer, Rebecca Green Parsons, to our lunch program. She will be serving up tasty meals and snacks from the cafeteria.
Our school is selling tickets on an Apple a Day Fundraiser. Starting on March 25, 2015 we will begin doing seven daily draws for apple products. Prizes include ipod touches, an Apple TV, an ipad mini, ipads and an 11 inch Macbook Air computer. Tickets are on sale now for 20 each. Each ticket sold will be in the draw for all seven prizes. There will be prizes for the students who sell the most tickets. If our school sells all 2,032 tickets we will have a skating party to celebrate. Students are encouraged to return their tickets as they sell them to get their name in for incentive draws. We will begin doing small prize draws on Monday for students who have sold tickets.

The
junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “j” and the number
“9”. They are also talking about Winter Carnival and Pink Shirt Day. They would
like to welcome Ryder and Jaxon Hornidge to their classroom.
Mme.
Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class are learning the letter “x” and the
sight word “moi”. They had a great time on Thursday doing the Winter Carnival
fun activities the junior high and level 1 class organized. They were also
learning about the Québec winter carnival.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is excited to have their first tomatoes
growing in their Little Green Thumbs garden. They would like to thank Trina
Burden for volunteering to read to the class on Thursday as part of the Rotary
Read Along and to Adam Buckle for his visit to their class with Leif the Lucky!
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class is learning about our natural resources in
social studies. They have transplanted their seedlings and are writing all
about their gardening experience.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning how to count by 2’s and
5’s. They are having fun grouping different items to count. They have also been
practicing their estimating skills. The children were all very excited about
the book fair this week. They are all fabulous readers.
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class is learning about aboriginal people in social
studies. They are also learning about some of their legends. This week the
student of the week is Leah.
Mme.
O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is celebrating the spirit of winter
Carnival by learning about" Bonhomme Carnaval" He is the mascot of the Québec Winter
Carnival. This is part of their school curriculum which highlights the French
culture in Canada. Happy Carnival to everyone!! Joyeux Carnaval!
Both
Ms. Horner’s and Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four classes had their last
cross country ski lesson on Tuesday. The students had a lot of fun at Blow Me
Down Trails learning to ski this winter. They really enjoyed the last lesson
with lunch at the lodge and all received certificates for the program. It was a
great day out in the snow. The students would like to thank the instructors and
Blow Me Down staff for an excellent program.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class wore pink t-shirts on Wednesday to raise
awareness about bullying. The students are starting a class novel study on
“Bridge to Terabithia”. They are having a contest to see who the fastest kid is
in fifth and sixth grade, just like in the book. Stay tuned to hear who wins
the race!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class took
part in the Winter Carnival Chili Cook Off at Margaret Bowater Park last
weekend. They had a lot of fun making their chili and trying a variety of
recipes from other people and groups in Corner Brook. The class organized the
Winter Carnival fun day for the school on Thursday afternoon.
