Summer
break has officially begun for students at IHMS. We had a very busy end to our
school year this week.
On
Monday we had our annual end of the year spelling bee. Congratulations to our
grades three to six students on a f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c spelling bee. The overall
winner in grade three was Reyd Ward, in grade four the winner was Colin
Spencer, in grade five the winner was Amna Ahmad and in grade six the winner
was Paige Walsh.
In
the afternoon on Monday we enjoyed a “wet” sports event full of games that got
everyone moving and cooled off. Thank you to Mr. Ryley Nadon and the junior
high to level 1 students who organized the event.
On
Tuesday we had our final pancake breakfast as a school community. Thank you to
Mrs. King, Mme. Lachance, Mrs. George, Ms. Park, Mrs. Vincent, Ms. Perrett, and
Mme. Ryan for helping to prepare the yummy breakfast. In the afternoon the
Student Leadership Council hosted our last talent show for the year. We had
singing, dancing, gymnastics, piano playing, joke telling, acting, and even a
clown show! We would like to thank Coleman’s for the donation of the cakes in
celebration of “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”.
Author
of “I Am A Survivor”, Lorraine Kocot, visited our grades three to six classes
on Tuesday to read from her book and talk to the students about bullying. Her
message was about helping others and what to do if someone is being a bully.
On
our last day of school we celebrated Mass with Father Terry, held our end of
year awards assembly and received our final report cards. Our school bands
performed during our end of year award’s assembly. We would like to say a
special thank you to our student band conductors Hajra Ahmad, Makenzy Bishop
and Maria Reynolds.
Our
school hosted our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast on Thursday morning.
We would like to thank our many volunteers for their hard work and dedication
to our school throughout the year.
Last
weekend a team of volunteers worked on our school grounds to prune and weed our
flower beds and shrubbery. Thank you to Marjorie Deckert, Lisa and Robert
Morrissey, Terry Janes, Peter Buckingham, Michael Walsh and John Cammie for
donating your time and skills.
We
would like to thank Buckle’s Bussing for their support of our school this year.
We
wish everyone a safe and happy summer. See you in September!

to James and Kaitlyn Coade who participated in the kids 2.5 km run as part of
the National Shoe 10 Km Trail race last Saturday.

second place was Simon Boitsefski for “Simoniyanam”. In grade five, first place
was Amna Ahmad for “Fab Fashion”, in second place was Aaron White with “Odd
Jobs With Bob”, in third place was Ryan Bennett with “Fantasy Cars”. In grade
six, first place was Paige Walsh with “Pet Hotel”, in second place was Makenzy
Bishop with “CB Cupcakes” and in third place was Emma Doman with “CupCake
Land”.

Business Essay Winners. Classroom winners in grade seven to nine included: Anna
MacKenzie for “Pooch Fair”, Douglas MacKenzie for “AE Recycling”, Nathan
Anderson for “Shelter of the Homeless”, Hajra Ahmad for “Home of Hope and
Progress”, and Maria Reynolds for “CoupCo”. Anna MacKenzie was also the grade
seven Western Regional Winner. Anna received a cheque for $50.00 as well as a
YMCA prize package.

This week was filled with educational field trips! Mme. O’Dell and Ms. Park’s grade two classes had a plant identification field trip at Margaret Bowater Park. The Little Green Thumbs group consisting of Mrs. Hodder’s kindergarten students, Mrs. George’s grade one students and Ms. Horner’s grade three and four students went on a field trip to Wright’s Farm in Pasadena. Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion students visited the Insectarium in Deer Lake. The grade three and four class also did a field trip with Duck’s Unlimited and visited the Bonne Bay Marine Station on Thursday.
On Wednesday evening our families were invited to our annual Art Show. There was lots of art on display from our many art projects this year. We have a lot of talented students!
The junior high to level 1 students continued their final exams this week. Today they are writing their math exam. Their last exam is on Monday morningSTARS OF THE WEEK |
Congratulations to the students who received their First Holy Communion last Sunday at Holy Redeemer. Receiving First Holy Communion was Jacob Blackwood, Carter Bromley, Jemma Butler, Meredith Dawe, Noah Evans, Summer Gale, Molly George, Emily Hindy, Matthew Kemp, Leah Lainey, Charlotte Mercier, Isabelle Mercier, Katherine Noel, Kate Murphy, Jaidyn Prosper, and Gabriel Rowsell. Thank you to Father Terry for a beautiful service, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Deckert, and Mrs. Goerge for preparing the students, and to Mrs. King, Ms. Park, Mrs. McCarthy, Mme. Lachance and all the students’ family members for attending the service.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning to count money this week. They have been very busy making year end videos for our final assembly. They are looking forward to their field trip today.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class really enjoyed their field trip to Wright’s farm in Pasadena. They would like to thank Mr. And Mrs. Coleman for allowing them to enjoy lunch at their home during their field trip. This week they have been busy making Father’s Day crafts. They would like to wish all their dads and pops a happy Father’s Day!
Mrs. George’s grade one English Green Thumbs group had a ball at Wright’s Farm on Wednesday. The farmers were so very nice to them! They learned a lot about farming. They are also looking forward to their primary field trip today to Prince Edward Park. The class would also like to thank Mr. And Mrs. George for the wonderful party they hosted for the class last Friday night. Also, the students would like to wish all fathers (especially their dad’s) a very happy Father’s Day.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had lots of fun at the Insectarium. The children thought the butterfly room and the snake were tied for best feature. The class has also been very busy working on surprises for Father's Day and writing descriptive writing pieces about a classmate.
Ms. Park’s grade two English class had a wonderful field trip looking for flowers and plants through the Corner Brook Stream Trail and Margaret Bowater park. They really enjoyed doing their summer art and crafts which they displayed in the art show on Wednesday night. Today they are looking forward to their field trip to Prince Edward Park.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class were busy this week practicing a musical about the story “The Three Little Pigs” for an end of year show for their parents next week. The class really enjoyed their field trip identifying plants with the grade two English students.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class had a very busy week with fun field trips! The class really enjoyed the art show on Wednesday night. They are looking forward to celebrating their Little Green Thumbs harvest on Tuesday.
Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class had a very full week of activities. They had a Ducks Unlimited Tour on Wednesday, visited the Bonne Bay Marine Station on Thursday and today are going to the NL Sports Fest at the Pepsi Centre. The grade three students have written their own stories and published them in their very own book!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had an excellent time on their field trip on Thursday to Margaret Bowater Park, City Hall, the rooftop garden and the Corner Brook Museum. In social studies the grade five students made talking sticks. The class is looking forward to the spelling bee on Monday.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy writing their final exams this week. Today they are writing their Math exam. After the exam the students are looking forward to their field trip to Mrs. King’s cabin at Bonne Bay Pond.
On Tuesday we will be hosting our end of year pancake breakfast on Tuesday from 7:45 am until 8:30 am. The final variety show hosted by the Student Leadership Council will take place at 1:15 pm.
Our year end Mass will take place at All Hallows on Wednesday morning at 8:30 am, following Mass we will have our awards at 9:30 am. Dismissal for summer vacation is at noon.

Our school musical was a huge success. Thank
you to everyone for all of their hard work and dedication. We would like to
thank Roger’s Cable for use of their lighting, Andrea Barrett for costumes,
CBRH for risers, All Hallows for chairs, Bailey Jordan-Neil for performing, Mr.
Graham for directing the musical, our staff, and all of our families for making
the show a success.
On Monday our classes celebrated World
Ocean’s Day with lots of activities and art work about the importance of the
oceans in our world.
Happy birthday from the prayer group to Mrs.
Coleman who celebrated her birthday on Monday.
First Reconciliation was held at All Hallows
on Monday night with Father Terry. Celebrating their first reconciliation was
grade three students Jenna Cammie, Keira Clarke, Cole Boyd-Martyn, Kira
McCarthy, and Natalie Parsons. Thank you to Mrs. George who organized the event
and to Ms. Horner, Mrs. English, and Mrs. Dicks who facilitated some of the
stations with the students.
Congratulations to the kindergarten English
and French Immersion students who had their kindergarten graduation on Tuesday
evening. Thank you to Mrs. Hodder, Mme. Brett and Mr. Graham for a beautiful
night of song and celebration.
Last night there was a meeting for parents of
students who are interested in the Germany-Paris trip planned for next year
during Easter. The trip is open to students in grades five and up for the
2015-2016 school year.
Also on Thursday evening, Mrs. Coleman hosted
a pre-First Holy Communion celebration in Chapel.
Today our school is hosting Jump Rope for Heart
and Stroke activities today.

participated in the Arthur James Sun Run last Saturday. Kaitlyn Coade, James
Coade, Teresa Coleman, Luke Coleman, and Hala Parsons ran the kids 1 km event.
Clare Coleman, Max Chrappa, Caleb Rashleigh, Ella Rashleigh, and Natalie
Parsons ran the kids 2.5 km run.
The junior kindergarten classes are really
enjoying talking about their dads and doing some Father’s Day activities. They
also enjoyed doing activities for World Oceans Day on Monday.
Congratulations to Ben Griffin, Clare
Coleman, Luke Coleman, and Lily Smallwood who participated in the second
Mudslide Mountain Bike Series race for the junior course. Teresa Coleman also
participated in the Squirt Division.
Congratulations to our students who have been
taking part in their yearend music recitals. Grace Brake-Higgins, Reegan
Curtis, Ava Hodder, Molly George, and Isabelle Mercier had their final piano
recital for the year. Alister MacDonnell had his final recital for the year
playing the drums.
Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion
class has been busy learning how to tell time. They had a great time at their
kindergarten graduation on Tuesday evening. After the celebration they enjoyed
a cake with all their names on it!
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class really
enjoyed their graduation celebration in the gym with their friends and family.
This week they were learning about sinking, floating, transportation and
graphing.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a
very busy week finishing up all their projects. They are really excited to be
going to Mrs. George’s house tonight for their yearend party!
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class
made crayon resist tropical fish for World Ocean’s Day. They are doing writing
projects to highlight a classmate’s positive character traits. They are
studying and sorting 2D and 3D figures.
Ms. Park’s grade two English class picked
their lettuce from the greenhouse on Thursday. They were very excited to taste
the lettuce they grew. The students are looking forward to their First Holy
Communion on Sunday morning at Holy Redeemer. The student of the week is Emily.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion
class has been analyzing different versions of Les Trois Petits Cochons, they
are studying the points of view from the pigs perspective as well as the wolf's
perspective. The students also wrote their own version of the story.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class has
been working hard on a time lapse video of their marigolds growing. It was
broadcasted over the whole school. The grade three students are working hard to
publish their books.
Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French
Immersion class had a lot of fun at the Erosion tour last Friday. It was very
interesting and they learned a lot about erosion. They have been working very
hard to finish their curriculum in grade three and four!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is
working on making a yearend yearbook to share with their classmates. The book
will include facts and information about them, their favourite memories from
this year and their photo.

class is busy preparing for final exams.
The grade 7 to level 1 students began their
final exams on Tuesday.

This week is Environment Week. Many of our
classes are celebrating with recycled art projects, nature walks and schoolyard
clean up projects.
Our
school was very busy this week performing the school musical “Joseph and The
Amazing Technicolor Dream coat”. The performance featured all of our students
from junior kindergarten to Level 1. As well, we had a special guest
performance by Bailey Jordan-Neil. Thank
you to Dr. Gary Graham for directing the show, Mrs. Marjorie Deckert for
assisting with the costumes, Mr. Wilfred Pardy for assisting with the sound,
Cameron Peddle for overseeing the sound equipment, and to all the teachers and
students for helping with the props and backgrounds. It was an “Amazing” show. See pictures below.

$100 in free books from Scholastic this week!!
Congratulations to Amna Ahmad who received their
place in the ACAP Humber Arm Art Contest for elementary and to Caleb Rashleigh
who came in second place in primary. All the students’ art work will be
displayed at City Hall. .

Congratulations to our students who received
regional awards for the National Geoscience and Engineering Month Bridge
Building Competition. Madison Noel, Anna Mackenzie and Jayden Lempriere placed
first for their bridge which held 155 kg; Maria Reynolds, Arista White, and
Hajra Ahmad who placed second for their bridge which held 116.3 kg; and Douglas
MacKenzie, Nathan Anderson and Cameron Peddle placed third for their bridge
which held 71.1 kg.
Congratulations to our winners in the World
Ocean’s Day Poster Contest. In kindergarten, Hala Parsons received an
honourable mention, in grade one Rachael Griffin received an honourable
mention, and in grade three Reyd Ward received an honourable mention. All the student's posters will be displayed in
the World's Oceans Day Poster Contest.
The junior kindergarten classes really enjoyed singing in the musical. They are working on some crafts to have for the upcoming art show.
Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion
class had a very busy week getting ready for the school musical and
kindergarten graduation. They are practicing very hard! They are also learning
how to tell time and will be exploring outdoors and digging in some soil to see
what lives in it. They have also been cleaning up litter in celebration of
Environment Week.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is
learning about community helpers in social studies. They are also learning to
tell time in math. The students were very excited to wear their brightly
coloured shirts and perform in the musical!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is
finishing up their math and social studies for the year. They really enjoyed
performing in the musical this week.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion have
been working very hard on the musical. It was a fantastic show. They are
learning what it means to have good character. They are well on their way!! The
class has received their caterpillars and are hoping to have some butterflies
to release before the school year ends. They are very excited about winning
$100 in classroom books from scholastic!
Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning
about volunteers in social studies. They are busy learning about regrouping
addition and subtraction in math.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion
class is reading different versions of the Three Little Pigs. They will do a
study and analysis of similarities and differences among these. They were also
very busy with the musical this week. They hope everyone enjoyed the show.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is very
excited to go on their Erosion tour this afternoon. To celebrate Environment
Week they made recycled art this week from old book pages painted with water
colour paints. The grade four students are building a castle out of milk
cartons in language class as part of their sequencing strategy. They have to
pay careful attention to the King’s commands in order to build it properly.
Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion
class prepared a slideshow for their penpals in St. Malo, Quebec. In their
presentation they talked about Newfoundland traditional food, music, and places
to visit. They hope to meet their penpals one day!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is
reading “Kensuke’s Kingdom” and practicing their sequencing strategies. The
book is an adventure story about an 11 year old boy who goes missing! The
students enjoyed performing in the musical this week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1
class have begun preparing for exams. The Junior High Girls’ basketball team
had a great tournament last weekend in St. John’s. The team lost in the
semi-finals by eight points.
Kindergarten graduation is Tuesday, June 9th,
at 6:00 pm in our school gymnasium.
The First Holy Communion will be celebrated
on Sunday, June 14 at 10:30 at Holy Redeemer.
Junior high to level 1 exams begin on June 12th.
Registration is still available for our full
day junior kindergarten and our English and French Immersion kindergarten
program for September 2015. As well, we are accepting new registrations for
kindergarten to grade five French Immersion and Grade one to level two English.
