Isabelle Mercier, grade four winner; Isaac Buckingham, grade six winner; Colin Spencer, grade five winner; and Natalie Parsons, grade four winner in the IHMS year end Elementary Spelling Bee.

Last week many of our classes had their end of year field trips. The kindergarten to grade two students went bowling, the grade three and four English and French classes had a pyjama and movie day, and the grade five and six class visited the Corner Brook Museum and the City Library.

Last Friday we hosted our school art show in the gym. All of our classes posted some of their best artwork from this past year. Thank you to the parents and family members who came to see the artwork on display.

The Elementary School Spelling Bee was held in our cafeteria on Monday morning. Students and staff wore black and yellow to celebrate the spelling bee. Students in grades four, five, and six were challenged to spell some very difficult words. In grade four Natalie Parsons and Isabelle Mercier were the overall winners, in grade five Colin Spencer was the overall winner, and in grade six the overall winner was Isaac Buckingham.

Mr. Ryley and the junior and senior high class organized our sports day on Monday. It was a lot of fun. All classes participated in the stations around the school. It was a full afternoon of activity.

The last full day of school was on Tuesday. We celebrated with a school wide pancake breakfast. Thank you to Mrs. King and the teachers who helped to serve pancakes. In the afternoon the Student Leadership Council hosted a variety show. The show featured over 30 acts by some of our amazing and talented students and teachers.

School closed on Wednesday at noon. We celebrated Mass at All Hallows with Bishop Hundt followed by our year end school assembly.

Thursday morning we held our annual volunteer breakfast to honour the people who volunteered their time at IHMS to make this another amazing year. Thank you for all you do.

Congratulations to our YMCA Create A Logo classroom winners. In grade four: first place was Keira Clarke, second place was Rebecca Janes, and third place was Natalie Parsons; in grade five: first place was Simon Boitsefski, second palce was Clare Coleman, and third place was Colin Spencer, in grade six: first place was Ryan Bennett, second place was Jack Richardson, and third place was Kori Noel.

Congratulations to our YMCA Market Your Thoughts Essay contest winners. In grade seven: first place was Max Chrappa, second place was Myles Calbert, third place was Jordan Park; in grade eight: first place was Anna MacKenzie, second place was Madison Noel, and third place was Cameron Peddle; in grade nine: first place was Ryan Miller, second place was José Garcia, and third place was Rebekah Calbert.

Congratulations to Max Chrappa who was the grade seven first place regional winner and the first place provincial winner!

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Dillman who received her yellow stripe belt last week in Tae Kwon Do.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes would like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer. They all had a great year!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great year in kindergarten French Immersion. They wish everyone a wonderful summer break!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a great day participating in sports day, especially the water games. They enjoyed watching the variety show on Tuesday and would like to wish all a safe and adventurous summer.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had the most awesome year! They worked hard, learned so much and made many wonderful memories and friendships. Though saying goodbye is really hard, they are looking forward to a well deserved break. They want to wish everybody a happy, fun and safe summer! 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class had a lot of fun during the sports day, everyone is excited to bring their pumpkin plants home for their home gardens. They are all ready for a safe, happy and healthy summer!

Ms. Park’s grade two class finished up some year end activities this week. They wrote about the things they are going to be doing this summer and made a cute craft to go along with it.  They had so much fun on Sports Day and watching the talent show on Tuesday. Have a wonderful summer, everyone!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion enjoyed their French culture day, had a blast at sports day. They ended off the week with a little class party! Passez un Bon été!

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class had a great sports day today and had a lot of fun watching the talent show.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great last week of school. The class had a lot of fun at the water activities during sports day. They would like to wish everyone a great summer vacation.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class said goodbye to the Brazilian and Mexican exchange students last week on Friday afternoon with a special celebration. Students finished their final exams on Monday.

On Sunday, grade two students, Kaitlyn Coade, Luke Coleman, Oscar George, James Lao, Cole Lyver, and Alister MacDonnell, celebrated their First Holy Communion at All Hallows Parish. The students and their families enjoyed a celebration social in the school cafeteria following Mass. We would like to thank Father Terry, Mrs. George and the students’ families for making this day so special.

On Monday evening students, Jacob Blackwood, Carter Bromley, Jemma Butler, Noah Evans, Emily Hindy, Leah Lainey, Charlotte Mercier, Isabelle Mercier, Kate Murphy, Katherine Noel, and Gabriel Rowsell, received their first sacrament of Reconciliation. We would like to thank Father Terry, Mrs. George, Mrs. English, Mrs. Dicks, Mrs. King and the students’ families who assisted with this special occasion.

The grade seven to Level two students celebrated the end of the school year with a field trip to Mrs. King’s cabin in Bonne Bay Pond. They would like to thank Mrs. King, Mr. King for hosting the class and  Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Hancock for joining them on the trip. They would also like to thank Mrs. Barb Anderson and Mrs. Eleanor Reynolds for driving students on the field trip.

The kindergarten English and Kindergarten French Immersion students celebrated their graduation ceremony on Wednesday night. The students performed for their families before receiving their diplomas and watching a slideshow of photos from the past year. We would like to thank Mrs. Hodder, Mme. Foley and Mr. Graham for preparing the students for this event.

The grade five students completed their artwork this week with Jane Reagh. This was the last session for the group to meet for the Art Smarts project “Experiencing Our Eco-systems”. The project involved three smaller programs for grades three, four, and five throughout the year. We would like to thank Mrs. Reagh for bringing her enthusiasm and talent to our school art program this year.

This past week in physical education we had two guests instructors present to the students. Mr. Wayne Allen taught an introduction to golf. Later in the week Mr. Sean Richardson taught our students self defence with a focus on Muay Thai. The students really enjoyed both sessions. 

Today we are hosting our annual Art Show in the school gym from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Parents and family members are invited to come view some of the amazing artwork students have created this year.

We would like to wish Clare Coleman good luck in the Track Fest Meet in St. John’s this week. Clare is participating in the 60 m, 600 m and long jump categories.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are looking forward to showcasing their artwork today at the annual art show. The students would like to wish all their dads a happy Father’s Day on Sunday. They cannot believe the school year is coming to an end!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has successfully finished their first year of French Immersion. It has been a great year. On Thursday evening they had their Kindergarten graduation with their family and friends.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was very excited to celebrate their Kindergarten graduation on Thursday evening. They really enjoyed the performances and celebrating with a special cake. They would like to say congratulations to all their classmates on a great year. The students also enjoyed a year end class bowling trip!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been writing about their dads’ and making Father’s Day crafts. They had a great time on their field trip yesterday. They would like to wish all the dads out there a super Happy Father’s Day.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class has been working on Father’s Day items. On Wednesday they had a French picnic with different cheeses, fruit and baguettes! It was a lot of fun. The students also planted pumpkin seeds to take home and cultivate for the fall.

Ms. Park’s grade two class are making totem poles in social studies class. Today they are making pizza and looking forward to the art show at lunch time.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class are finishing off their end of year work. The grade three students are finishing a project on how to train their dragon and the grade four students are finishing their French novel study. The grade five students enjoyed a field trip to see the art show “Six Artists, Six Walls” at the Arts and Culture Centre.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class is learning about static electricity in science. The grade three students are working on a role play in language arts. The grade four students are finishing the writing of their summer bucket list. The students are very excited for the art show today.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was very busy this week finishing art projects and writing activities. The grade five students finished their paintings this week and will showcase them in the art show today.  The grade five and six students wrote artist statements to accompany their artwork in today’s art show.  On Wednesday they visited the art show “Six Artists, Six Walls” to see the exhibit and examine the artist statements. As a final activity, students chose a piece of artwork and commented on the artist’s use of technique.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class finished their final exams today. The group went on a field trip on Tuesday to Mrs. King’s cabin in Bonne Bay Pond. Today they are saying goodbye to their exchange student friends with a class celebration in the afternoon.

Coming Up

Our IHMS Elementary Spelling Bee is on Monday morning at 9 am and our year end Sports Day will begin at 11 am.

This Tuesday there will be a pancake breakfast in our school cafeteria beginning at 7:30 am. The Student Leadership Council will host the last variety show for the year beginning at 1:00 pm in our school gym.

Wednesday is the last day of school for the 2015-2016 school year. There will be a family mass at 8:30 am at All Hallows followed by the year end assembly at 9:30 am. Classes will be dismissed from homeroom at noon.

Last Thursday evening our school presented “Oliver” the musical. Congratulations to Dr. Graham, our students and teachers on a wonderful performance. Thank you to our families for supporting this event, Corner Brook Regional High for lending us extra chairs, Mr. Hancock for recording the musical, Isaac Buckingham for setting up the live stream, and Cameron Peddle for managing the sound.

On Friday morning of last week the grade three and four classes went on a Ducks Unlimited Tour. The students had a great time. Thank you, Ducks Unlimited, for sponsoring this tour. In the afternoon, Ms. Jane Reagh worked with the grade five students studying clouds and learning how to oil paint as part of our ArtSmarts grant.

Alison Pittman, Youth Ventures Coordinator, presented to the grade seven to Level two students about starting their own summer businesses. After the presentation, students also worked together to build a spaghetti and marshmallow tower.

Over the weekend Junior Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Crocker, Mrs. Dicks, Mrs. English, Ms. Perrett, and Mrs. Vincent participated in a training workshop.

On Monday we held an assembly to honour our provincial winners in the World Ocean’s Day Poster Contest.

Yael Piercy was the kindergarten Provincial Winner and Rotém Phillips Grobelaar was the grade one Provincial Winner. The girls were presented their prize packs in a school assembly to honour their accomplishments.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Rylan Andrews, Charlotte Mercier, Isabelle Mercier, Robert Morrissey, Lysea Nginang, and  Israela Nginang on their Music For Young Children Spring Recital last Sunday.

Congratulations to Hala Parsons who received first and second place ribbons in the Deer Lake Dolphins Swim Club Year End Dash.

Congratulations to Ben Griffin, Lydia Parsons, Hala Parsons, and Natalie Parsons who participated in a Mountain Bike Race on Sunday. Ben placed third in the long course x 2 Dirt Squirt Expert.

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie and Rebecca Janes who passed their figure skating tests during the Silver Blades test day.

Congratulations to Lucy Maloney who helped with the Food Bank Collection on Monday evening.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are looking forward to the art show next week so their mom’s and dad’s can see the artwork they have made this year. This week they did activities to celebrate World Ocean’s Day.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class really enjoyed presenting their science project on icebergs last week in the science fair. The students loved performing in “Oliver” for their parents last week.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class learned about our environment this week. They have been very busy preparing for the kindergarten graduation.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a busy week finishing up all their art projects. They are very excited to be going to Mrs. George’s house on Sunday for their year-end party!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is celebrating Environment week by discussing their environmental responsibilities. Their class cultivated lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and kale from the greenhouse with Mme. Moss’ class and enjoyed a yummy salad for lunch. It is exciting to grow food! The class is going to plant wild flower seeds on the school grounds just behind the greenhouse.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about life cycles in science class. They are doing an underwater craft for World Ocean’s Day. In social studies they are learning about different things their grandparents did in the past.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class harvested their lettuce from the greenhouse and enjoyed a salad lunch on Tuesday. The grade three students wrote their provincial math assessment this week.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a busy week. The grade five students continued their painting project with artist Jane Reagh as part of their ArtSmarts grant. Both the grade five and six students completed their classroom yearbook by writing a profile, a catch phrase and warm fuzzies for their classmates. They can’t wait to see the finished product.

Mr. Drew’s  junior high and level 2 class is writing their first exam today. They were busy this week studying for their exams and finishing off a few art pieces for the upcoming school art show.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School hosted its annual Junior High Speak-off last week. Rebekah Calbert was the winner and is seen with her Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Angel McCarthy, at the awards presentation.

Last Thursday Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group held the May Crowning at All Hallows Church to celebrate May as the month to honour Mary.

On Monday we held our annual school Science Fair for students in grades 4-9. We would like to thank our judges Mme. Marie Claude Renard, Mr. Wayne Spencer, Mr. Cec Lake, Dr. Dwayne Keough, and Dr. Carla Wells.  The judges awarded top medals to Natalie Parsons, Rebecca Janes, Keira Clarke, Clare Coleman, Kori Noel, Max Chrappa, Madison Noel, and Rebekah Calbert. This year the grade three students chose to complete individual projects. The judges awarded three honourable mentions to grade three students Charlotte Mercier, Noah Colbourne and Brooke Watton. The junior kindergarten to grade two students conducted experiments in groups.

On Monday we welcomed back the students and teachers who toured Italy as part of the EF School Tours. The group visited Rome, Assisi, Florence, Verona, and Venice. During their trip they visited and toured many churches, historical sites, and learned about local and traditional crafts produced in Italy.

Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. George hosted a pre-holy communion celebration in our chapel on Monday evening for grade two students preparing for their first Holy Communion. Prayer group members: Aria Kazerouni, Colin Spencer and Rebekah Calbert were also in attendance to assist with this celebration.

The grade four students have completed their art project on animal habitats with Jane Reagh. The students’ artwork is on display in the cafeteria windows. The group is planning on presenting and explaining their artwork to classes next week. The class would like to thank Jane for leading this project. They really enjoyed working with you!

We would like to congratulate Dr. Graham our musical director for “Oliver Twist” and all of our students for their wonderful performance last night. Everyone worked very hard and it was a wonderful show. Thank you to all our teachers and students for their behind the scenes work.

Today we are having a casual day in aid of the annual Janeway Telethon.

The grade three and four students are going on a field trip today with Ducks Unlimited.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes had a lot of fun on Monday showing their parents science experiments in the Science Fair. It was messy and fun! They would like to congratulate Wes Cleveland and his family on their new baby boy, Rory. The students loved being part of the school musical. They would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Graham!

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class really enjoyed the science fair and musical this week. They are looking forward to their kindergarten graduation in a few weeks.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a lot of fun at the science fair on Monday with their tornado and sink or float experiment. The students are excited to raise money today for the Janeway Telethon.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed showcasing their science fair experiments this week. They favourite was definitely flubber! They are working hard on our subtraction stories in math. They had so much fun performing in the musical last night!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class had a lot of fun performing in the musical. For the science fair they made four different types of musical instruments. They are making sunny faces for art class.

Ms. Park’s grade two class finished their geometry unit in math this week. They are learning about animals in science class. The students worked really hard preparing for the “Oliver” musical.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class was very busy this week. The grade three students are playing with their geometric shapes to wrap up their final unit in math. The grade four students have finished up their ArtSmarts Project with Jane Reagh. Their work is on display in the cafeteria. The grade five students are starting a oil painting project with Ms. Reagh today.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class had a fantastic time at the science fair on Monday. The grade three students are discussing bullying this week through activities and scenarios. They are talking about the bully, the bullied and the bystander. The grade four students are learning different ways to represent time in math. They were very excited to finish their habitats artwork with Jane Reagh this week.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class thoroughly enjoyed the science fair on Monday. The grade five students are happy to announce that they have finished their last spelling test for the year. In math class they are learning about quadrilaterals. The grade six students are finishing off their individual clue games. The students made their clue games with a school theme. They are looking forward to having the grade five students solve the mystery. Was it Mr. Drew chewing gum in the library? Or Mme. Moss with the broken iPad in the cafeteria?

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class was very busy this week with the science fair and preparing for the school musical. The class painted the backdrop for the performance and prepared many of the props for the production. They would like to welcome back their classmates who were in Italy last week.
