This week we kicked off an Allergy Aware Food Drive for the Christmas season. Each classroom is responsible for bringing in a food item that does not contain a particular allergen, such as egg, milk, peanut, mustard, etc.
Our students and classes are busily preparing for our annual Christmas concert. This year our concert is being hosted on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm.
The Student Leadership Council has begun their annual Stockings for Seniors and Firefighter’s Toy Drive collections for the Christmas season. Donation boxes are located in each classroom.
The junior kindergarten classes completed their Helping Hands Project on Wednesday. They would like to thank everyone for their generous donations! They collected 19 bags of new and used winter items for the people in need in our community.
Our Intermediate Skills Challenge teams were very successful in St. John’s last weekend. Our Wind Turbine team of Madison Noel and Daniel Olvera received gold medals. Also, our junior hairstyling team of Cheyenne Bursey and Kori Noel received silver medals. Our IHMS Team #1 called “TechRiders” received the third place overall for their research project on the horse saddle. Members of the team included: Mohamed Al-Zubaidy, Jacob Bursey, Simon Boitsefski, Clare Coleman, Heather Cooper, Marcus Gallant, Carly Johannesen, Alessandra LeBlanc, Arabella LeBlanc and Emily Payne. The IHMS Team #2 called “Roaring Robos” received second place overall for Program and Design. Team members included: Ryan Bennett, Makenzy Bishop, Myles Calbert, Max Chrappa, Cole Dumaresque, James Murphy, and Jack Richardson. Congratulations to all the students who competed in the event.
Congratulations to Keira Clarke who was chosen as an honorary mention in the Provincial National Forestry Week Poster Contest.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Rebecca Janes who participated in the Agnes Thistle Invitational Figure Skating Competition in Corner Brook this past weekend. Rebecca received a silver certificate for solo.
Congratulations to Jordan Dicks-Park who competed in the Provincial Singles Bowling Competition this past weekend in St. John’s. Jordan received third place in the province.
Congratulations to our students who performed in the Advent Concert hosted by the Graham Academy on Sunday evening. Simon Boitsefski, Grace Brake-Higgins, Keira Clarke, Clare Coleman, Luke Coleman, Heather Cooper , Carly Johannesen, Candance Johannesen, Ella Rashleigh, Alister MacDonnel and Lily Smallwood were part of the show.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about Christmas and the letter “a”. The students are enjoying their time outdoors in the fresh snow.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about how snow is made. They are learning about the life cycle of the chick in science and are working on the letter “j”.
Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about the water cycle, snow and ice. They have also having fun discovering more French words related to Christmas.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about Advent in religion class. They were very excited to lead the First Advent celebration this week. They are writing friendly letters to Santa today.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class began a new math unit. They have been really busy writing fun addition stories. They are discussing the first Christmas and made manger scenes. With their friends in grade two, they have started to brainstorm ideas for a class Christmas story.
Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is excited to celebrate a couple birthdays coming up this month along with baby Jesus. They have been trying to make clouds in science class and have tried two different ways. They have one more way to test.
Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is learning French vocabulary for the theme of Christmas. They also started learning about measurements in math.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is writing letters to Santa in French. They are working hard with the French choir in preparation for the Christmas concert.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is watching their plants grow in their Little Green Thumbs Garden. They have begun their research for their heritage posters. In math they are working on number sense up to 1,000.
Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class learned about the explorers: Cartier, De Champlain and Hearne. They also examined a rock collection and discussed the properties of each rock.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on Heritage Posters and writing about the meaning of home. The grade five students are learning about Nubia in social studies and the grade six students are creating rhyming poems about school in language arts class.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class had an excellent time at the Intermediate Skills Challenge. They would like to thank their coaches, teacher chaperones and bus driver for all the work they did to help ensure they had a successful trip. This week the class is creating posters for the Heritage Month. The grade seven and eight students are rapping about grammar and the senior high students are learning about artificial intelligence and how to play the game “Go” in language arts.
