Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (23/2/18)

On Tuesday we celebrated the 100th day of school at IHMS. Everyone was dressed for the theme day and many classes did activities with the number 100 during the day. We hosted a pep rally in the afternoon for Erica Kennedy and Israela Ngania who are travelling this weekend to the Telegram Scripps Spelling Bee. Good luck to both girls!

Our entire school took part in the IHMS Olympic Carnival activities on Wednesday. Each classroom represented a different country in the games. We paraded in the gym for the opening ceremonies, watched a video about the Olympics and then competed in a variety of games in the afternoon. Thank you to Mr. Ryley, Mr. Drew and the senior high students for organizing the events. It was a lot of fun!

On Thursday evening IHMS hosted the annual Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. Ava Hodder and Lily Smallwood represented our school in grade four. Maitham Al-Zubaidy and Katherine Noel represented grade five, and Reyd Ward and Rebecca Janes represented grade six. Congratulations to all the spellers on their hard work!

On Wednesday evening Anna MacKenzie and Rebekah Calbert participated in the annual Lions Club Speak Out. Rebekah received third place, a monetary award and plaque; while Anna received fourth place and a plaque.

This week we held our second Scholastic Book Fair for the year. The family event took place on Wednesday evening with the classroom visits on Thursday. Thank you to Mrs. George, Mr. McCarthy, and the teacher volunteers for making it another successful book fair.

This week we welcome Graham Zilkowsky and his mom, Jeri Graham, to our breakfast program as volunteers.

Our school was well represented at the Regional Chess Tournament this past weekend. Fabian Ryan won a gold medal and Hunter Olmstead won a silver medal in grade one; Uriah Cull won a silver medal and Jack Watton won a bronze medal in grade three; Allister MacDonnell won silver in grade four; Candace Johannsen won silver in grade five; and Daley Merrigan won gold in Level 1. Congratulations are also extended to Noah Wall and Jacob Cull who also qualified for the provincials in St. John’s this March. Chess club members Mark Janes, Liam Gaulton and Gabriel Rowsell also participated in the tournament.

Congratulations to Candace Johannesen who was awarded first place provincially in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Junior Essay Contest. Candace was presented a certificate and a cheque for $100 for her winning essay.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Luke Coleman and Max Pittman, members of the Atlantic Boys’ Choir, who performed concerts in Corner Brook this past weekend along with Liam Gaulton, Sam Gaulton, and Grayson Roberts; members of the Puffin Provincial Choir.

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who competed in a provincial figure skating competition in St. John’s last weekend.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the different sports in the Winter Olympics. The students enjoyed the winter carnival day activities on Wednesday.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class celebrated the 100th day of school and the winter Olympic activities. They became superheroes this week and are learning about NL Power and tips to save energy.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had so much fun celebrating the 100th day of school. Everything they did revolved around the number 100. They all dressed up like they were 100 years old too!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class had an exciting week. They celebrated the 100th day by looking at things they could do in just 100 seconds. This week they finished up their math units and are very excited to move on to measurement. They have been learning a lot about winter sports. They found the luge every interesting.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class loved the 100th day celebrations and our Olympic theme day. They learned about Sweden and made crafts. They are finishing up addition and subtraction in math and looking forward to measurement.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is enjoying their division unit. All the strategies are tough, but fun! They are using the imperative tense to help them bake cookies.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has been working hard on their novel study for the book Good Dog. They had a blast on Olympic theme day.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class celebrated their big birthday party to finish off their French unit. They are really enjoying celebrating the Olympics.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is enjoying their Olympic theme in social studies. The class is tracking medals for Canada, the United States of America, Norway, Germany, Iceland, and Sweden.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is working on mixed and improper fractions. In science they are working on a kickstart project. In language arts they are reading a book all about cheetahs.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class have been working hard on their bridge designs. In language arts they are reading about phobias and facing their fears.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is participating in the Poetry In Voice annual competition. Students will learn a poem by heart and recite it for members of their class. Science 1206 students are learning about significant figures, scientific notation, and unit conversion. Biology 2201 students are learning about the human heart.

Coming Up

On Monday we will host our Term 1 Awards assembly beginning at 1 pm in the school gymnasium.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (16/2/18)

This we celebrated the beginning of the Lenten season with a pancake breakfast on Shrove Tuesday. We would like to thank our helpers in the kitchen including Mrs. George, Mrs. Hodder, Mrs. Guy, Ms. Cunning, and Mrs. Ryan. The pancakes were delicious! Tuesday was also Canadian Agriculture Day.

On Wednesday we attended Mass at All Hallows with Father Terry and received the sign of the cross in ash on our foreheads. During this season we think about the things that we could do to bring us closer to God.

The Student Leadership Council organized a carnation sale for Valentine’s Day and signing telegrams. It was a huge success again this year. Students and staff dressed in red, pink and white to celebrate the theme and many classes exchanged Valentines in a small class party.

Mrs. Sandra Burden, our Coordinator for the Kids Eat Smart Program, visited the breakfast program on Monday.

This week we welcomed new volunteers, Mrs. Daphne Kennedy and Mr. Adam Kennedy to our breakfast program.

Ms. Valerie Sheppard visited with the grade 7-9 students on Wednesday afternoon to discuss bridge design and construction for National Geosciences and Engineering Month. The students are planning and building their own model bridges for the competition in early March.

The grade four class had their second cross country skiing lesson at Blow Me Down Ski Club on Thursday afternoon. The students are enjoying the lessons!

Senior High play rehearsals have begun for the play “If Girls Asked Boys for Dates”.

Congratulations to our chess theme day winners! Our winners include: Carrie Hoskins, Charlea Boyd-Martyn, Joel Lyver, Ethan Lahey, Madeline Murphy, and Willow Boland.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about agriculture and looking forward to the Corner Brook Winter Carnival.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class tasted peas they harvested from their Little Green Thumbs Garden that they harvest on Canadian Agriculture Day. They are exploring sinking and floating with light vs. heavy objects.  They enjoyed the Valentine’s Day celebration and the pancake breakfast.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about Lent in religion class. They had a wonderful Valentine’s Day celebration on Wednesday.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is working on a Valentine’s Day process writing piece this week and beautiful Valentine’s Day art. They are very excited for the long weekend.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class enjoyed their Valentine’s Day celebration and their themed activities. They are looking forward to their new unit in math and are continuing to learn about movement in science.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class had a great time celebrating Valentine’s Day this week with themed French activities and a classroom party.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is seeing lots of sprouts in their Little Green Thumbs Garden. Everyone is enjoying feeding the worms and watching them work. They have been discussing the different types of people that live in our province in social studies.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is learning about the nine times tables. They are writing a Pourqoi tale in language arts called “Why Racoon Wear a Mask”.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is starting a Winter Olympics project. The students created flags for six countries they have a personal connection with. Now they are eagerly watching the Olympics, tracking the countries’ medals, and learning about their athletes.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is writing persuasive reviews in language arts class. In science they are creating an energy savings video for the Kids in Charge Contest.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has started to build their popsicle stick bridges for National Geosciences and Engineering month bridge building contest. They are also rehearsing for the upcoming drama performance.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class has started rehearsals for their play “If Girls Asked Boys for Dates”. Biology 2201 students are beginning the circulatory system. Earth Systems 3209 is learning about igneous rocks.

Coming Up

School is closed on Friday and Monday for the winter break and City of Corner Brook Winter Carnival Day.

The Regional Chess Tournament will take place on Sunday for kindergarten to Level 3 at Eastside Elementary. Registration is 9:00-9:30 with a fee of $20.

The Leifling contest will take place at J.J. Curling at 2:30 on Sunday for students in kindergarten to grade 6.

Happy Groundhog Day!

Our school is hosting the Western Regional Grade five Boys’ Basketball Tournament this weekend.

Our students have been busy with the start of the basketball season. Last weekend the grade six girls’ basketball team and the grade six boys’ basketball team played in a tournament at Eastside Elementary. The girls lost a close game in the cross-overs. The grade four boys’ basketball team played in Pasadena at Pasadena Place.  The grade 4 girls’ played a tournament at C.C. Loughlin. It was a great weekend of basketball. The coaches for the weekend were Mr. Ryley Nadon, Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Drew Nadon, Mme. Moss and Mrs. Bishop.

We would like to wish best of luck to Daley Merrigan who competed at the Eastern Canadian Cross Country Ski Championship this week.

Junior and senior high exams  continued this week. They will finish on Tuesday of next week.

February is Non-Violence Month. Our classes will participate in a violence awareness grant from Violence Prevention West called “Be A Buddy”.

The Student Leadership Council will begin taking pre-orders for Valentine Carnations next week on Wednesday. Carnations will sell for $3. They will be delivered on February 14.

Our school community would like to send condolences to the family of the late Dave Corbet. Mr. Corbet was a supporter of our school community and an active member with the Knights of Columbus.

We would like to send best wishes to Ms. Lindsay Randell who is off on medical leave.

Congratulations to Luke Coleman who received bronze medal in an Atom B tournament in Grand Falls. Luke was also awarded Player of the Game.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are doing groundhog activities this week. They would like to congratulate Imogen Ash and her family on the birth of their new baby boy.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class has their first vegetable growing in their Little Green Thumbs Garden. They are learning about sinking and floating in science.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning all about groundhogs this week. Did you know they are also called woodchucks and whistle pigs? They are really enjoying their new math unit on measurement.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is excited about Groundhog Day. They wrote about what groundhogs might dream about during winter. They have also been working on subtraction stories.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is learning about Groundhog Day and are excited to make a groundhog crafts. They are enjoying movement in science, and adding and subtracting in math.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on process writing in French. The grade five and six students are working on the conditional tense.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is learning all about their vermicomposting. They are feeding their worms this week and learning about their habits. Their Little Green Thumbs Garden is beginning to sprout.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is excited to be learning about climbing Mount Everest in language arts. They are having loads of fun planning a party in French.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is excited to start their new unit in social studies. They are creating posters for National Geoscience and Engineering Month.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about ratios in math class. They are each making a presentation on different countries and their traditions in social studies.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is completing their measurement units in math. The class is starting a whole heart project.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class continued to write their midterm exams this week. The students are beginning to study poetry through the Poetry In Voice program.

Chess theme day is February 8.

Our school will have an Olympic fun day on February 21.

Our school celebrated the annual Valentine’s Day service with Mrs. Coleman and members of the Prayer group on Monday and Tuesday.

The grade four students began their cross country skiing lessons this Tuesday at Blow Me Down trails. They will have four classroom lessons as part of their physical education program.

This is National Non-Smoking Week.  The Public Health Nurse presented to the grade six to eight students about the hazards of smoking.

Congratulations to students in grades four, five and six who completed speeches in their classes this week. Our Elementary School Speak Off will take place on February 13 in our school cafeteria. The participating students are: Ava Hodder, Lily Smallwood, Alister MacDonnell, CarlyRae Mouland, Luke Coleman, Gabriel Rowsell, Brooke Watton, Molly George, Keira Clarke, and Rebecca Janes.

Last Saturday afternoon many of our students received awards at the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Remembrance Day Poster and Essay Contest Awards ceremony. In Junior Essay Candace Johannesen placed first, Reyd Ward placed second, and Molly George placed third; in Intermediate Essay Aaron White placed first, Mohamed Al-Zubaidy placed second, and Emily Payne placed third; in senior essay Davi Rodrigues placed third; in Intermediate Poem Max Chrappa won second place, and Jack Richardson won third place; in Senior Poem Madison Noel won third place; in Junior Black and White Poster Mohamed Al-Zubaidy placed second and Ryan Bennett placed third; in Junior Colour Poster Kori Noel placed first; in Intermediate Colour Poster Davi Rodrigues placed second and Cheyenne Bursey placed third; and in Intermediate Black and White Poster Wayslanne Calvalcante placed second.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Christian Mouland who won two silver medals last weekend at a Regional Shotokan Karate Competition in Grand Falls. Christian won for Kata and Kumite.

Congratulations to Cameron Bishop, Danyael Jacobs, Mark Janes, and Robert Morrissey who participated in the Pond Hockey tournament during National Hockey Day in Canada. Their team won the trophy! Congratulations to Mark Janes who was a tireless volunteer during this tournament.

Congratulations to Daley Merrigan who participated in the Western NL Games Qualifier for Cross Country Skiing this past weekend in St. Anthony. Daley won first place in Male Skate 5km Free and first place in Male Classic 5Km Free. Daley now qualifies for the Winter Games Team

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who won a silver medal last weekend for figure skating in Port Aux Basques.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are enjoying winter crafts. They would like to congratulate Sebastien McKay who played during the intermission of the Corner Brook Royals vs. The Stephenville Jets during Hockey Day in Canada.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about length and capacity in math. They had a wonderful experience at the Kindergarten orientation at Western Memorial Regional Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is very excited to have started a classroom worm factory! They have planted 12 kinds of seeds. So far 11 of the seeds have sprouted. They are learning about Canada’s food guide in health class. They would like to wish a happy 7th birthday to Addison.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is working on their winter writing piece. They are proud to display their hard work. Both grades are working on addition and subtraction stories in math. They are talking about responsibilities at home and school.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is learning about adding and subtracting in math. They are also learning how to write number sentences in different orders. In science , technology and social studies they are learning about movement.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on their oral production in French class. They will be doing a two minute free speech on a topic of their choice. They are both nervous and excited!

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is very excited to have planted their Little Green Thumbs Garden. Their worms have arrived for their vermicompost kits. It is going to be an interesting few months ahead!

Ms. Guy’s grade four class enjoyed their first cross country skiing lesson this week at Blow Me Down Ski Trails.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is continuing their study on ancient Nubia in social studies. In language arts they are reading Rapunzel: The One With All the Hair and comparing it to the movie Tangled. The class said goodbye to Jocelyn Li on Thursday. Jocelyn has finished her exchange and is travelling back to China today.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class had a presentation from the public health nurse on smoking this week. They are reading the book The Gramma War. It is very suspenseful!

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is writing their first midterm today. Their first exam is math. They would like to extend best wishes to our Brazilian exchange students who are travelling home to Brazil this weekend.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class have been busy all week preparing for exams. The first exam is the English exam today. Today is the Brazilian students last day at IHMS. They would like to wish them all the best of luck!
