Grade 5/6 News Article - Lion's Roar (26/1/18)

Our school celebrated the annual Valentine’s Day service with Mrs. Coleman and members of the Prayer group on Monday and Tuesday.
The grade four students began their cross country skiing lessons this Tuesday at Blow Me Down trails. They will have four classroom lessons as part of their physical education program.
This is National Non-Smoking Week.  The Public Health Nurse presented to the grade six to eight students about the hazards of smoking.
Congratulations to students in grades four, five and six who completed speeches in their classes this week. Our Elementary School Speak Off will take place on February 13 in our school cafeteria. The participating students are: Ava Hodder, Lily Smallwood, Alister MacDonnell, CarlyRae Mouland, Luke Coleman, Gabriel Rowsell, Brooke Watton, Molly George, Keira Clarke, and Rebecca Janes.
Last Saturday afternoon many of our students received awards at the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Remembrance Day Poster and Essay Contest Awards ceremony. In Junior Essay Candace Johannesen placed first, Reyd Ward placed second, and Molly George placed third; in Intermediate Essay Aaron White placed first, Mohamed Al-Zubaidy placed second, and Emily Payne placed third; in senior essay Davi Rodrigues placed third; in Intermediate Poem Max Chrappa won second place, and Jack Richardson won third place; in Senior Poem Madison Noel won third place; in Junior Black and White Poster Mohamed Al-Zubaidy placed second and Ryan Bennett placed third; in Junior Colour Poster Kori Noel placed first; in Intermediate Colour Poster Davi Rodrigues placed second and Cheyenne Bursey placed third; and in Intermediate Black and White Poster Wayslanne Calvalcante placed second.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Christian Mouland who won two silver medals last weekend at a Regional Shotokan Karate Competition in Grand Falls. Christian won for Kata and Kumite.
Congratulations to Cameron Bishop, Danyael Jacobs, Mark Janes, and Robert Morrissey who participated in the Pond Hockey tournament during National Hockey Day in Canada. Their team won the trophy! Congratulations to Mark Janes who was a tireless volunteer during this tournament.
Congratulations to Daley Merrigan who participated in the Western NL Games Qualifier for Cross Country Skiing this past weekend in St. Anthony. Daley won first place in Male Skate 5km Free and first place in Male Classic 5Km Free. Daley now qualifies for the Winter Games Team
Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who won a silver medal last weekend for figure skating in Port Aux Basques.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are enjoying winter crafts. They would like to congratulate Sebastien McKay who played during the intermission of the Corner Brook Royals vs. The Stephenville Jets during Hockey Day in Canada.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about length and capacity in math. They had a wonderful experience at the Kindergarten orientation at Western Memorial Regional Hospital School of Nursing.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is very excited to have started a classroom worm factory! They have planted 12 kinds of seeds. So far 11 of the seeds have sprouted. They are learning about Canada’s food guide in health class. They would like to wish a happy 7th birthday to Addison.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is working on their winter writing piece. They are proud to display their hard work. Both grades are working on addition and subtraction stories in math. They are talking about responsibilities at home and school.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is learning about adding and subtracting in math. They are also learning how to write number sentences in different orders. In science , technology and social studies they are learning about movement.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on their oral production in French class. They will be doing a two minute free speech on a topic of their choice. They are both nervous and excited!
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is very excited to have planted their Little Green Thumbs Garden. Their worms have arrived for their vermicompost kits. It is going to be an interesting few months ahead!
Ms. Guy’s grade four class enjoyed their first cross country skiing lesson this week at Blow Me Down Ski Trails.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is continuing their study on ancient Nubia in social studies. In language arts they are reading Rapunzel: The One With All the Hair and comparing it to the movie Tangled. The class said goodbye to Jocelyn Li on Thursday. Jocelyn has finished her exchange and is travelling back to China today.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class had a presentation from the public health nurse on smoking this week. They are reading the book The Gramma War. It is very suspenseful!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is writing their first midterm today. Their first exam is math. They would like to extend best wishes to our Brazilian exchange students who are travelling home to Brazil this weekend.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class have been busy all week preparing for exams. The first exam is the English exam today. Today is the Brazilian students last day at IHMS. They would like to wish them all the best of luck!
Coming Up
Exams continue next week for students in junior and senior high school.
