The halls of IHMS were filled with music this week as our choirs and band practiced for their performances in the Rotary Music Festival. The Chamber Choir and Elementary Choir performed on Tuesday morning. Both groups also participated in a workshop. The Chamber Choir scored 87. The senior band performed on Wednesday morning at the Arts and Culture Centre.
The grade one and two choir performed on Thursday morning, and the junior kindergarten and grade one students performed on Friday and participated in a workshop. We would like to thank Mrs. Benyon-Martinec and Ms. Alteen for their hard work and dedication to our music program. All of our students had great performances!
The junior and senior high drama production students hosted a bake sale on Monday to raise money for their trip to Springdale. The students have been working very hard to memorize their lines and rehearse the movements for their upcoming productions.
Report cards were distributed on Wednesday afternoon for students in kindergarten to grade six. Parent teacher night was Thursday evening.
This Wednesday was National Pi Day! Our classes participated in activities with the number Pi. Some students even challenged themselves to see how many digits of Pi they could memorize.
On Friday there were traps all over the school for the tricky leprechaun. Students have set traps in their classroom to try and catch the leprechaun and take his gold treasure.
Congratulations to our Chess team on their participation in the Provincial Chess Tournament in St. John’s last weekend. Our chess players included: Uriah Cull, Jacob Cull, Alister MacDonnell, Daley Merrigan, and Noah Wall. Congratulations to Daley Merrigan who won gold in Level 1.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Kate Murphy who participated in the Marble Cup last week. Kate won two bronze medals, one in slalom and one in giant slalom and three silver medals in slalom races.
Congratulations to Mark Janes who received a certificate in Tae Kwon Do for Awesome Round House Front Kick.
Congratulations to Daley Merrigan who competed in the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games. Daley placed second in the Male King’s Court Qualifier and went on to win gold in the Male (5km Classic). He also won silver in the 800m Sprint, and his team won gold in the Male Team Relay.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland. They are excited to set a trap for the leprechaun and try to get his gold.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning time to the hour in math and some digits of PI. They are learning about magnets in science and are excited to perform in the Rotary Music Festival today.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class was really excited to perform in the Rotary Music Festival on Thursday. Molly’s mom, Dr. MacDonnell, came to their class to talk about the eye for science. They really enjoyed it and learned a lot!
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is really enjoying St. Patrick’s Day activities. So far they have discussed St. Patrick, himself, wrote about why they enjoy St. Patrick’s Day and started some centres. The children are excited to see what shenanigans the Leprechauns may cause this weekend.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class has started a new chapter in math on measurement. They are enjoying measuring items in length as well as height and weight! The class is happy to report that they have counted over 4,000 bags for the Plastic Grab Bag Challenge.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is diving into St. Patrick’s Day activities. They are learning all about Ireland, and its history – particularly the legend of St. Patrick!
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has been rehearsing hard for the Rotary Music Festival. They had a wonderful performance on Tuesday morning. They are beginning a new math unit on division.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is writing a letter to member of the Canadian military who is the uncle of one of their classmates. The students had an excellent performance at the Rotary Music Festival on Tuesday morning. It was fun to take part in a workshop with other elementary students. Ms. Dianne Drover Newfoundland Light and Power visited the class to talk about energy conservation and preservation.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is learning about Canada’s first nations as early settlers. The grade five students are finishing their cause and effect writing.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about angles in math. They are finishing a research project in social studies and role playing a game show to practice their grammar skills.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class held a bake sale on Monday to raise money for their drama festival trip. The group has been busy rehearsing in preparation for the dress rehearsal next week.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is also preparing for the drama festival with their own production. Biology 2201 students are beginning the respiratory system. Science 1206 students are learning about velocity.
Coming Up
There will be a dress rehearsal for the drama festival on Wednesday at 1:00 pm. The students will perform in the festival on Saturday in Springdale at Indian River High School. The performances begin at 2 pm.

Israela Ngania (left) and Erica Kennedy (right) represented our school at the annual Telegram Scripps Spelling Bee in St. John's on February 24. Both girls performed exceptionally well.
