Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (26/10/18)

Last Friday’s Janeway pajamarama was a huge success. Thank you to everyone for their support of this worthwhile fundraiser.  

Mrs. George’s grade one class is launched Operation Christmas Child this week! They are collecting items such as tooth brushes, colouring books, pencil sharpeners, pencil leads, and small toys to fill for children in developing countries.

We would like to thank Mrs. George, Mr. George, Mr. McCarthy and our team of fabulous teachers on another successful Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you also to our students and families for purchasing books. All proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair goes back into our school! Stay tuned to hear the final sales total next week.

As part of our Farm to School Grant, Ms. Janice Galliott, Ms. Ingrid Watkin and Mrs. Cheryl Cull travelled to St. John’s for a workshop and training. We look forward to learning all about it and beginning this program in our school.

Good luck to our runners participating in the SSNL Cross Country Running Island Qualifier. Isaiah Coleman will represent our school on Saturday for the elementary boys.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Lauren Green who was the winner in the City of Corner Brook Fire Department’s annual Fire Safety Week Slogan Contest. Lauren’s slogan: “When you hear the fire alarm, leave quietly so no one is harmed” will be featured on the Fire Safety Vehicle for 2018-2019. Lauren received an individual prize and her class will receive a pizza party. Congratulations also to Isaiah Coleman who won the colouring contest. Isaiah won a personal prize and a pizza party for his class as well.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are making Halloween crafts and carving their pumpkins this week in preparation for Halloween. They enjoyed the scholastic book fair.

Mrs. Cornick’s Kindergarten class really enjoyed pajamarama day last week. The students are working with letters and letter sounds.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing spooky writing this week! They are grouping numbers to 20 in math and starting to collect items for Operation Christmas Child. The star of the week is Jessie.

Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is working on estimating and grouping large numbers. They are learning about structures in science and made haunted houses out of cereal boxes.

Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about estimation and base ten. In social studies they are learning about important people in our communities.

Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is looking forward to Halloween activities. The grade fours are learning about adding and subtracting three and four digit numbers. The grade five students are modelling and re-naming numbers, while grade six students are renaming numbers.

Mrs. Williams’s grade three class would like to say thank you to everyone for their support of the Textile Recycling Drive. The class is excited to begin daily three literacy centres in language arts. In art class this week they used paper plates to make turtles they designed and coloured.

Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is excited about Halloween next week. They are respectfully learning about Remembrance Day and writing essays for the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual contest.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class had a great time designing and playing their human body board game. They are excited to start their Nubia project in social studies.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class has started working on their “Into Orbit” project for First Lego League Robotics. The students are very excited to help solve real world problems about humans living in space.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is preparing for the upcoming Intermediate Skills Challenge. In social studies the students have been learning about the political parties in Canada.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is looking forward to the class leaf raking fundraiser on November 3 and 4. The Canadian studies students are learning about Canadian landforms and geography. Science 1206 students are learning about the nutrient cycles.

November 25th Merchandise Bingo in aid of the IHMS capital works project to replace the gymnasium floor.

IHMS will host a craft fair on December 8th in our school gym. Anyone who would like to set up a table can call the school to be a part of the Winter Wonderland Craft Fair.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (19/10/18)

Today is pajama-rama day in aid of the Janeway. Students and staff are dressed in their pyjamas for the day. The Student Leadership Council is hosting a movie day in the gym with a chips and candy sale. The movie everyone is watching is Hotel Transylvania 3. We would like to extend a special thank you to Nikola Verbiski and Kate Murphy who made popcorn to sell in aid of the Janeway.

This week was Waste Reduction Week. We celebrated with a number of school wide activities including litterless lunch, one hour no power, recyclable art projects and a textile recycling drive. Ms. Williams’ grade three class organized the textile recycling drive. The students made poster to place around the school advertising the initiative. The collected clothing will be donated to the local Salvation Army.

Our Cross Country Running team participated in a race at the Participark hosted by St. Peter’s Academy. Our grade three representatives included Jacob Butt, Logan Butt, Zackery Burden, and Sylvia Burton; in grade four we had Isaiah Coleman, Mikka Ochoa and Mark Janes; in grade five we had Luke Coleman; and in grade six we had Molly George and Alyssa Power. We would like to congratulate Luke Coleman who placed second for grade five boys. Congratulations to everyone on the team for a great season of Cross Country Running.

Lynelle Cantwell, the Canadian red Cross Youth Leadership Ambassador visited our school to share her story about bullying and empowerment with our grade 5 to 12 students on Thursday. The students enjoyed the presentation very much.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about community helpers. They are excited for pajama-rama day.

Mrs. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning all about bats, pandas, penguins and many more animals. They are fascinated with these animals. On Thursday the public health nursing students presented to the students on handwashing.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the seasons in science class. They are making Halloween decorations out of recycled bottles and boxes. The star of the week is Jayden.

Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is working on representing and counting large numbers. They are working to reduce their waste in all ways to be better stewards of the environment.

Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is studying ordering, positions and estimation. They are learning what dries up water in science class.

Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is working on French novel studies this week.

Mrs. Williams’s grade three class learned about declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences in language arts this week. The class made it their goal to raise awareness about textile recycling for Waste Reduction Week. They put up posters around the school and spread the word about Textile Tuesday.

Mrs. Hink’s grade four class really enjoyed their language arts fact hunt. They now have beans growing in their aquaponics garden.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class really enjoyed the field trip to the Agriculture Expo. They are researching and writing biographies about heroes.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is excited to start Lego Robotics this week. They are learning how to program this week and exploring the theme on space.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has started integer unit in math. In social studies are exploring post confederation Canada.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is beginning preparation for the skills challenge. Writing 2203 students are completing journal entries and resumes. Biology 3201 students are learning about structure and function of the ear.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (12/10/18)

It was another busy week at IHMS. Our cross-country running team attended the SSNL Western Region Cross Country Running race in Kippens. Luke Coleman, Mark Janes, Kate Murphy, Alyssa Power, and Lily Smallwood represented our team. We would like to congratulate Luke Coleman who placed third for grade five boys and Kate Murphy who placed sixth for grade six girls.

The grades four to six classes attended the Agriculture Expo on Friday morning. The classes participated in learning stations about food and livestock grown and produced in Newfoundland.

The Corner Brook Fire Department visited our school this week to practice our school fire drill. Everyone did an excellent job getting out of the school safely and quietly.

The grade five to seven girls’ basketball team will play an exhibition game with a visiting school from St. John’s today. Good luck to the girls!

Next week we will be celebrating Waste Reduction week with a variety of activities as a school community.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about fire safety. They are learning about the letter “d” and the colour yellow.

Mrs. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning about fire safety this week. They are also learning about the life cycle of frogs and butterflies.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing Halloween alliteration and learning some Halloween poems. They are enjoying working with ten frames in math class. The star of the week is Jayden!

Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class are working on spooky artwork and Halloween vocabulary this week.

Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about money in math. They are continuing to work on phonics and grade two sight words.

Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class had a busy week. The grade four students have begun their third unit in math. They are working on estimating sums and adding mentally. The grade five and six students have also begun a new unit on comparing and contrasting numbers. Students are looking forward to the fair today.

Mrs. Williams’s grade three class enjoyed practicing the days of the week in French class last week with a flash card game. They are anxiously awaiting the bean seeds they planted to sprout.

Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is excited that their aquaponics garden is growing fantastically. They will be eating salad in no time! This week they are conducting sound experiments.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is working on body systems board games in science class. They are looking forward to the Agriculture Adventure Expo today.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class has started Lego robotics in science and technology class. In language arts they are finishing off their science experiments.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class will complete their federation debate in social studies. In art class the students are working on a soap carving project.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class welcomed their last four Brazilian students this week. Welcome to Kaio, Vinicius, Amanda and Karlos. Science 1206 students are learning about pesticides and bioaccumulation. Math 3201 students are learning about permutations and combinations.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (5/10/18)

Today we are celebrating Thanksgiving Day with a school family meal. We welcome to our school board members, community members and our students to enjoy a meal cooked by Colemans. We would like to thank our parent volunteers for serving the meal. Our junior kindergarten, kindergarten to grade 6, and Chamber Choir will perform, as well as the Senior Boys’ Choir. Our Student Leadership Council will also make a presentation to the local food bank on behalf of our school. Thank you to our families who have donated items for this wonderful cause.

Our Cross Country Running team attended a meet at C.C. Loughlin on Wednesday afternoon. Our runners in grade three included Yasmin Alkahil, Noor Altaee, Zachery Burden, Sylvia Burton, Jacob Butt, and Logan Butt; representing grade four were Isaiah Coleman and Mark Janes; representing grade five were Jake Morey, Cole Lyver, James Lao, and Luke Coleman; and representing grade six were Gabe Rowsell, Oscar George, Carter Bromley, Kate Murphy, Alyssa Power, Molly George. We would like to congratulate Luke Coleman who placed second for grade five boys, Molly George who placed second for grade five girls, and Carter Bromley who placed third for grade six boys.

There was a parent information meeting on Wednesday evening for Grade 6-Level III students regarding the Intermediate Skills Challenge trip to St. John’s in late November.

In the Student Leadership Council election Rebecca Janes was elected as Prime Minister, Carly Johannesen was elected as Deputy Prime Minister, Reyd Ward was elected as secretary, Brooke Watton and Gabriel Rowsell were elected as primary representatives.  Classroom representative elections are ongoing and will be announced next week. Congratulations to all who ran in the election this year.

We sold 501 bags of vegetables in our annual fundraiser. Thank you to everyone for your support.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about thanksgiving. They are performing today at our Thanksgiving Day dinner. The JK4 class would like to welcome Conor Coleman to their class this week.

Mrs. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning all kinds of things. This week they continued letter sounds and have started a theme called “All About Me”.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is making turkeys in art class and writing their thankful thoughts. They enjoyed their handwashing session with the student nurses this week. They are really excited about the turkey dinner today. The star of the week is Donna. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is skip counting money and learning about phonics and spelling in language arts. In social studies they are learning about changes in communities.

Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is learning about Thanksgiving traditions and the things in their lives for which they are thankful. They are also learning about animals that create homes in the soil and how this affects the soil.

Mrs. Williams’s grade three class is learning about the Atlantic Provinces and identifying them on a map. In language arts they are writing about their heroes. In science class they are observing what happens in their classroom compost.

Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is preparing for their first oral presentation. They are very excited for the Thanksgiving Day dinner and are wishing everyone a Bonne Fête de l’Action de Grâces.

Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is happy to report that their aquaponics garden has sprouted. They are looking forward to sharing in a Thanksgiving meal together today.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class enjoyed the presentation on smoking by the student nurses this week. They are making their body systems board games in science class.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class conducted a sour candy experiment this past week. The sourest candy was Sour Cherry Blasters with a close second place by Sour Patch Kids. In science they are making paper boomerangs.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has started working on Canadian federation simulation in social studies. The grade seven and eight math students have completed their first unit tests.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class welcomed six Brazilian students last week. Welcome to Caio, Bruno, Vinicius, Carolayne, Maisa and Victoria. Everyone had an awesome time on the annual fall Bonne Bay Trip. Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. King! Chemistry 2202 students have begun studying mole conversions. Canadian Studies students are creating a PowerPoint presentation all about Canadian Identity.

The Regional Cross Country Running Meet will take place in Kippens on Wednesday, October 10 for students in grade 4-12.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (28/9/18)

Today is medical theme day at IHMS! Our students and staff are dressed as medical professionals and hospital patients in aid of the Western Memorial Health Foundation Radiothon.

IHMS students celebrated National Tree Day on Wednesday with a variety of activities. All students created leaves to place on a tree in our school lobby. Ms. Jessica Galliott planted with classes in the school greenhouse and around the schoolyard. In addition, the grade five and six students participated in the Explore Forestry Day at Margaret Bowater Park. Mr. Ryley’s class won the roll of paper and the model machines donated by Kruger.

Our cross -country running team attended their first meet of the season at J.J. Curling on Wednesday.  Representing grade four were Isaiah Coleman and Mark Janes; in grade five Luke Coleman, Oscar George, James Lao, Cole Lyver, and Lily Smallwood; representing grade six were Carter Bromley, Molly George, Kate Murphy, Alyssa Power, and Gabe Rowsell. Congratulations to all our runners on an excellent start to the season! Congratulations to Isaiah Coleman who placed third for grade four boys, Luke Coleman who placed first in grade five boys, and Carter Bromley who placed first in grade six boys.

Our annual vegetable fundraiser orders are now due at the office. The vegetables will be delivered next week in time for thanksgiving.

The junior kindergarten classes would like to welcome Ms. Wand Lee Bowles to the junior kindergarten program. They are learning about autumn and enjoying outside play.

Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning about fall. The students made leaf rubbings in art class. They are starting to learn how to sort using attributes.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about what they like to do in the fall. They are learning about what happens to the sun each day in science class. The star of the week is Ava.

Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is discussing soil and its importance to all living things. They are working on increasing number patterns and writing rules for them. They are excited for medical theme day today!

Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about clouds this week. They are also working on numbers up to 100.

Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class made leaves to put on the tree in our school lobby for National Tree Day. They will have their first spelling test next week. Bonne chance!

Mrs. Williams’s grade three class is reading about Terry Fox and writing about his character traits such as courage and honesty. In math class they are finishing their pattern unit and doing review.

Ms. Hink’s grade four class has completed their first unit in language arts. They are now learning amazing facts about killer whales. They are having their first math test today.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class had a great time on their Explore Forestry Field trip on Wednesday. They are in their final steps of their archaeology dig.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is preparing a science experiment about sour candies. In science they are building balloon rockets.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is preparing a book talk presentation for English class. In social studies they are working on family biography projects.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class welcomed new students from Brazil to their class this week. Chemistry 2202 students are learning about mole. Canadian studies students are learning about Canadian artists.
