Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (12/10/18)

It was another busy week at IHMS. Our cross-country running team attended the SSNL Western Region Cross Country Running race in Kippens. Luke Coleman, Mark Janes, Kate Murphy, Alyssa Power, and Lily Smallwood represented our team. We would like to congratulate Luke Coleman who placed third for grade five boys and Kate Murphy who placed sixth for grade six girls.
The grades four to six classes attended the Agriculture Expo on Friday morning. The classes participated in learning stations about food and livestock grown and produced in Newfoundland.
The Corner Brook Fire Department visited our school this week to practice our school fire drill. Everyone did an excellent job getting out of the school safely and quietly.
The grade five to seven girls’ basketball team will play an exhibition game with a visiting school from St. John’s today. Good luck to the girls!
Next week we will be celebrating Waste Reduction week with a variety of activities as a school community.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about fire safety. They are learning about the letter “d” and the colour yellow.
Mrs. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning about fire safety this week. They are also learning about the life cycle of frogs and butterflies.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing Halloween alliteration and learning some Halloween poems. They are enjoying working with ten frames in math class. The star of the week is Jayden!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class are working on spooky artwork and Halloween vocabulary this week.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about money in math. They are continuing to work on phonics and grade two sight words.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class had a busy week. The grade four students have begun their third unit in math. They are working on estimating sums and adding mentally. The grade five and six students have also begun a new unit on comparing and contrasting numbers. Students are looking forward to the fair today.
Mrs. Williams’s grade three class enjoyed practicing the days of the week in French class last week with a flash card game. They are anxiously awaiting the bean seeds they planted to sprout.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is excited that their aquaponics garden is growing fantastically. They will be eating salad in no time! This week they are conducting sound experiments.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is working on body systems board games in science class. They are looking forward to the Agriculture Adventure Expo today.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class has started Lego robotics in science and technology class. In language arts they are finishing off their science experiments.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class will complete their federation debate in social studies. In art class the students are working on a soap carving project.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class welcomed their last four Brazilian students this week. Welcome to Kaio, Vinicius, Amanda and Karlos. Science 1206 students are learning about pesticides and bioaccumulation. Math 3201 students are learning about permutations and combinations.
Coming Up
The cross country running team is participating in a race on Wednesday, October 17 hosted by St. Peter’s Academy.

The Student Leadership Council will host a Pajamarama Day and movie in the school gym.
 Zackery Burden and Danyael Jacobs make an art project in the afterschool program.
