This week we hosted the annual IHMS Elementary School Speak Off in our school cafeteria. Representing grade four were Jack Watton, Brooklyn Pittman, and Robert Morrissey; representing grade five were Luke Coleman, Israela Ngania, and Lily Smallwood; and representing grade six were Brooke Watton, Gabriel Rowsell, and Candace Johannesen. We would like to thank our judges Mrs. Sandee Harnum and Ms. Paula Grudich. Lily Smallwood was selected as the overall winner.
This week we celebrated Pi Day on Thursday. Classes held Pi recitation competitions and sent their top two students to the gym to compete for the overall school Pi championship! Candance Johannesen took first place with 113 digits, Leah Lainey took second place with 71 digits, Thomas Moerschell was third with 64 digits, and Katy Hancock was fourth with 63 digits. Ms. Alteen, Mr. Drew, Mr. Ryley and Mrs. McCarthy volunteered to be pied in the face as a fundraiser for the Enrichment Program.
Report cards went home on Wednesday and we hosted parent teacher interviews on Thursday afternoon and evening.
On Friday we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a green theme day. Many classes set up traps to catch the leprechaun, however, he couldn’t be caught!
Our indoor soccer season has begun for both boys and girls.

Congratulations to Fabian Ryan whose hockey team received bronze medals in an invitational tournament last weekend in Gander.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are looking forward to setting a trap to catch a leprechaun. They are making St. Patrick’s Day crafts.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning new sight words “get” and “let”. They enjoyed the presentation by NL Light and Power on conserving energy and safety. In math they are learning low to measure.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about St. Patrick and doing some leprechaun writing this week. They are building traps and hope to catch one!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is enjoying some St. Patrick’s Day themed activities. In math, they are exploring mass with fun hands on activities.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about supply and demand. They are starting a new unit in math on addition to 100 and movement in science.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is participating in the Friends For Life Program. The students used their STEM skills to build incredible traps for the leprechaun. They had so much participating in the Pi Day activities. The class would like to congratulate Candace, Jamie and Israela for being selected as class representatives for the Pi Contest and to Candace for being the overall winner.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned how to measure objects using centimetres and meters, and how to measure the perimeter of an object. In health class, students learned the importance of spiritual and social health as well as physical health. In language arts class they are having a lot of fun reading “The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking”.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class had a lot of fun preparing for Pi Day by memorizing the digits of Pi. They also helped prepare art work and table decorations for the Provincial Chess Tournament.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class enjoyed their first session of the “Friends for Life” program this week. They are continuing their novel study on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about multiplying and dividing decimals in math. In social studies they are learning about the countries of the world.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is busy preparing their play “Gossip” for the Regional Drama Festival. In language arts they have started to research for the upcoming Heritage Fair.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class visited the College of the North Atlantic on Wednesday for an open house event. Canadian Studies students are learning about The Great Depression. Math 2201 students are learning about solving quadratic equations.
Coming Up
The provincial chess tournament will be held at our school on Saturday morning.
The Salad Bar will officially open on Tuesday.
