The Ford Drive 4UR School Event hosted by our school on Saturday, May 12 was a huge success with a total of 310 test drives, raising the maximum amount possible of $6,000! We want to thank Humber Motors Ford for providing us this opportunity to raise this money for our Playground Project. We also want to thank everyone who test drove vehicles as well as those parents and students who volunteered on Saturday.
Last weekend, our girls’ soccer team participated in the Sacred Heart Elementary Tournament. The girls would like to thank Miss Rozel and Mr. Gillard for coaching them.
We hope all our mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day and enjoyed the surprises that our students made for them.
On Wednesday and Thursday, our school performed “The Wizard of Oz”. Thank you to Mr. Graham for directing this musical. Many thanks also to Dulux Paints, Kent Building Supplies, Stan Dawe Ltd. and H & M Audio for their donations to our production. Thank you to Mr. Glen Simms, Mr. David Gillard, Mr. Al MacWhirter, Mr. Bruce Gillard, and Mr. Greg Taaffe for the work they did on the set, and thanks to Candace Pike who helped with the choreography. Our school was chosen by MMSB as a Waste Reduction Hero School, and on Thursday, videographers from NTV news in St. John’s were at our school. They featured Ms. Bennett, Teacher Sponsor for our Green Team, and student representatives about environmental initiatives. Also on Thursday, we celebrated World Catholic Day.
Stars of the Week

At the YBC’s Annual Awards Banquet, Beth Arsenault received the High Single Award, High Double Award, Most Improved Bowler of the Year Award, and the Bowler of the Year Award! Congratulations Beth!

Congratulations to Abigail Tiller who won a gold medal for bowling!

At the City of Corner Brook’s Excellence Community Achievement Awards, our school was the recipient of the Green Learning Award.

Congratulations to all the performers in “The Wizard of Oz” for their excellent performance!


From The Classrooms



The junior kindergartens are busy planting seeds and doing spring activities.

Mlle. Wight’s kindergarten French Immersion class have been busy practicing for “The Wizard of Oz” play. They are looking forward to the long weekend, hoping that they will have nice weather. They are excited to find out that because of all the test drivers for the Ford Drive 4UR School event last Saturday, they will be getting a pizza party!

Emily and Kelsey, students from Ms. Dwyer’s kindergarten class, saw a whale on their way to school Monday. Their class went across the street to the church to look out the bay for the whale, but they didn’t see it. Ms. Dwyer’s class is excited to perform in our musical. They have practiced their subtraction and are becoming fabulous subtracters!

Ms. Morrall’s kindergarten class had a very busy week practicing and performing our school play. They learned about the blend “st” in Language class, and are adding with Math manipulatives. They hope everyone has a safe and happy long weekend.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning the names of animals in French and is drawing and describing them. They went for a walk to find shapes in their environment and found many circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. They’ve been busy rehearsing for our play.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class started their last unit in Math. They just finished their last spelling test for the year. They celebrated World Catholic Day by writing an acrostic poem and making cards for Bishop Hundt and Monsignor Gale.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning the letters “V” and “X” in handwriting.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class really enjoyed performing “The Wizard of Oz” this week. They are getting ready to do some research in social studies on rivers, oceans, mountains, and islands!

Ms. Williams’ grade five and six class really enjoyed painting rainbows as decorations for our play. In Language Arts, they are studying author, Roald Dahl.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level one class worked hard rehearsing for our play and had fun performing and helping to set up the stage.

On Monday, May 21, Victoria Day, there will be no school. We want to wish everyone a wonderful long weekend!

The Provincial Language Arts Assessment for Primary and Elementary students will be on Thursday, May 24.

We have a lot of stars to congratulate and a lot of people to thank this week at Immaculate Heart of Mary!

This week is International Composting Week and our Green Team is doing great work this week, and every week, with our composting program.

The grade 6 to 9 band students would like to thank Sarah Marshall, a flute student from the University of Prince Edward Island, and former private student of Mrs. McHugh, who came in to do a workshop with the flute players. The students enjoyed it, and learned a lot. Ms. Marshall said she enjoyed it too! We are hoping she will be back soon to help us with our "Selections from Glee". 


On Tuesday at lunch time, Mr. Gillard had his head shaved for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He challenged our students to raise $2,5000 for the Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser, and they raised more than $3,300.! Maria Reynolds brought in $299.50 and earned the right to shave Mr. Gillard’s head. Assisting Maria was Mr. Greg Taaffe.

Also on Tuesday, our staff members had another meeting regarding our Model Greenhouse Project. We would like to thank Mr. Sean Dolter of Model Greenhouse and Mr. Blaine Hussey of the Department of Agriculture who met again with us regarding this project.

On Thursday students participated in The Jump Rope for Heart.

There will be no mass today, Friday, due to a funeral.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to the ten medalists from the Science Fair: Abby Companion, Brooklyn Companion, Max Chrappa, Hailey Colbourne, Clara Ryan, Liam Dawe, Nicole Keeping, Maria Reynolds, Gina Spencer, and Alex Williams. We also want to congratulate and thank all of our participants. The projects were awesome and our judges had a very difficult time making a decision. We want to thank our judges, Mr. Cecil Lake, Mr. Mark Fitzpatrick, and Mr. Chris Wellman. We also want to give thanks to our families for their wonderful response to our Science Fair!
Congratulations to Kennedi Boland, Abby Companion, Nicole Keeping, Maria Reynolds, Gina Spencer and Alex Williams on their advancement to the Western Regional Heritage Fair on Saturday, May 5th. Congratulations to Olivia Park who was also chosen to advance to the Western Regional Heritage Fair, but was unable to attend as she was on vacation. Congratulations to Gina Spencer whose project was chosen for a Citizenship Award. Gina was the recipient of a video camera that she will now use to videotape her project that has to be submitted for a national contest. All the best to you, Gina in the national contest! Congratulations to Kennedi Boland, who was a winner of a Scavenger Hunt at the Heritage Fair. We would like to extend our congratulations to all the participants of the fair.
The grade six students participated in the Mayor for a Day Contest as part of Municipal Awareness week. All participants had very good essays, and we want to thank you all for your great effort and excellent writing! Congratulations to Hannah Sparkes, one of the participants in this contest, who was chosen as a Councillor for the Mock Council Meeting at City Hall on Monday evening. Hannah was a very strong representative of our school at the meeting, and she did a terrific job! We would like to thank Ms. Williams for the work that she did in preparing the grade six students for this contest. We also want to thank Mayor Neville Greeley and his Councillors for allowing our students to have this opportunity.
This past weekend, Caylie Blake, Brooklyn Companion, Kennedi Boland, Anna Brake, Abby Companion and Bethany Whelan were involved in a Figure Skating Test Event. The girls skated really well and passed all of their tests. Congratulations to Bethany Whelan who did her gold free skate test which earned her a gold pin. Congratulations to all the skaters!
This past weekend, Lauren Davis participated in a gymnastics competition in Gander. We give our congratulations to Lauren who won a medal at the competition.
Congratulations to Carter Bromley, Sam Antle, Adam Lamswood, Ryan Lombard, Caleb Rashleigh, Wesley Torraville, and Coen Mackey who each received a medal at the Annual Corner Brook Minor Hockey Year End Banquet.
At the Silver Blades Annual Year End Banquet, Abigail Woodford was the recipient of the Spirit of Can Skating Award; Caylie Blake was the recipient of the Most Improved Competitive Skater Award; and Bethany Whelan was the recipient of the Maude Fraser Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations to all!


From The Classrooms
The junior kindergarten class would like to welcome Ms. Brittany Randell who is doing her work term in the junior kindergarten program with the College of the North Atlantic. They are happy to have Ms. Randell with them! They would like to thank Ben Guy, Deanne O’Reilly, and Janet Barry for making the flower head dresses for the JK classroom for The Wizard of Oz play. They would also like to thank the O’Reilly family for donating the cost of the head dresses to the Wizard of Oz productions. The junior kindergartens are finishing up their Mother’s Day activities. They are learning the importance of their mothers.

Ms. Wight’s kindergarten French Immersion class is doing Mother’s Day activities and crafts. They are learning new words that begin with the letter “U”.

Ms. Dwyer’s kindergarten class had two special visitors this week, Captain Gavin and Pirate Gordon. Ms. Dwyer’s class has just finished learning addition, and they are also starting to learn how to subtract. They are looking forward to being sunflowers in our The Wizard of Oz play. They have been talking about different types of soil and are learning to read. They love to learn!

Ms. Morrall’s kindergarten class worked very hard on their Mother’s Day crafts this week! They had fun at their first Teddy Bear Picnic on Wednesday. They would like to wish “Happy Mother’s Day!” to all of our wonderful moms!

Ms. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is having fun exploring Robert Munsch’s books in their author study. They really enjoyed making modelling clay boats for their Science Fair experiment. Also, they are comparing the growth of plants, animals, and people in Science. They are learning about healthy beverage choices in Health.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about signs and symbols on maps and globes in Social Studies. In Science, they are identifying common characteristics of humans, animals, and plants, and what makes each unique. They want to wish all our moms a super-fantastic Mother’s Day!

In Ms. Park’s grade two class, each of the students has picked a dinosaur of interest to them and is now doing research. They are also learning about how water is absorbed into the air in Science. The grade two’s are very excited to be practicing for the musical, The Wizard of Oz.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is looking forward to The Wizard of Oz performances next Wednesday and Thursday. This week in Math, they learned to tell time. They also learned that there aren’t enough hours in a day! They are so busy!

Ms. Williams’ grade five and six class has just begun an author study on Roald Dahl. On Tuesday afternoon, they had a lot of fun participating in a Summer Safety Scavenger Hunt on the school grounds. The grade five and six students would like to thank Mr. Josh Penney and public health nurse, Ms. April Dakins, for organizing and leading them in the scavenger hunt, and for teaching them important facts about summer safety.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level one class is preparing for The Wizard of Oz play. They are making slideshows in computer class, and they have a Science test this week.


Coming Up
This weekend our girls’ elementary soccer team is involved in an indoor elementary soccer tournament at Sacred Heart. Their first game is at 4:00 p.m. today!

This Saturday (tomorrow), from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., our school will host a Drive One 4UR School Event sponsored by Humber Motors Ford. This event will be held right on our school parking lot. For every person who test drives one of ten Ford vehicles, Ford will donate $20 to our school in aid of our Playground. Only one person per household is able to participate. There is no fee, and it will only require as little as ten minutes of your time. This is a great chance for our school to raise $6,000 in one day! Please come and support this fundraiser in aid of our Community School Playground Project. So many children in our community will be able to use this playground. All you need to bring is your driver’s license.
Tuesday, May 15th is International Day of Families.
Our students and Mr. Graham are busy preparing for the musical, The Wizard of Oz, which will take place in our gymnasium on Wednesday, May 16th and Thursday, May 17th. The performances are at 7:00 p.m. each evening. The cost is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Tickets are available at the door.
We wish all our mothers a “Happy Mother’s Day!” on Sunday, May 13th.

A Close Shave For The Heart & Stroke Foundation!


Students at Immaculate Heart of Mary School raised $3,300 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through the Jump Rope For Heart Campaign.

Teacher, Mr. Bruce Gillard, challenged students to raise $2,500. As an incentive, he said the student who raised the most money could shave his head!
 
Grade 6 student, Maria Reynolds, raised $299.50 earning her the right to shave Mr. Gillard's head.


What a great effort by all our students for this great cause! And we have to say, Mr. Gillard, you’re a great sport!

Last week, Ms. Bennett and Mrs. King travelled to Québec City with a group of students from grade 4 to Level I. They had many rich cultural experiences in Québec City. One of these experiences was a guided walking tour of upper and lower Québec City. The students also had the opportunity to visit the Martello Tower where they actively participated in defending the city as a soldier posted on the Plains of Abraham. The group toured La Citadelle de Québec, the Artillary Park, and the Interpretation Centre of Place Royale. They also visited Montmorency Falls, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Sugar Shack, and the Copper Shoppe. Students also enjoyed participating in cultural activities with different “chansonniers”. The students and staff who had the opportunity to take part in this wonderful trip would like to thank Ms. Tracy Kreuzburg, Ms. Janet Murphy Goodridge, and George and Brada Tucker who accompanied the group.
On Monday our school celebrated “International Dance Day”. We want to thank Bernice Winsor from the Y.M.C.A., who led all our students and staff in a fun dance activity called “Zumba”! Monday was also casual day and we raised $115.00 for one of our former students, Hailey Kawaja, who will be doing a work placement this summer in Kenya.
On Tuesday, we held an orientation session for students who are enrolled for September 2012 for both junior kindergarten and kindergarten (French Immersion and English). Our corridors saw many new faces, and everyone is looking forward to seeing them again in September. Also, on Tuesday evening, Sam Antle, William Bennett, Liam Dawe, Chenoah Park, and Jack Ryan celebrated their first Reconciliation at All Hallow’s Church. They would like to thank Mrs. George and Msgr. Gale for organizing the celebration.
Wednesday was a “Screen Free Day” at our school. Also, the kindergarten to grade 6 students went to the National Wildlife Exhibition at the Pepsi Centre in honour of National Wildlife week. Kindergarten Graduation pictures were also taken on Wednesday. The kindergarten Graduation will take place on June 7th at 6:00 p.m.
This afternoon, we enjoyed presenting our projects which we worked so hard to prepare for our annual in-school Science Fair. Thank you to all the parents who came to view our projects.

From The Classrooms

The junior kindergartens would like to thank Lorraine Burton from Leisure World who donated a big box full of art supplies to their class. The J.K. students were doing experiments all week to prepare for the Science Fair. As well, they did many Mother’s Day Activities. Orientation for new junior kindergartens for September 2012 took place on Tuesday, while our present junior kindergartens went to kindergarten class for their orientation.

Ms. Wight’s kindergarten French Immersion class was very excited and had a great time at the “Living with Wildlife” field trip at the Pepsi Center. Ms. Wight’s class is learning new words beginning with the letter “T”.

Ms. Dwyer’s kindergarten class went to grade one for orientation this week. Also they had their graduation pictures taken. The students were very excited about the Wildlife Exhibition and the Science Fair.

Ms. Morrall’s kindergarten class is having a great week! They all looked beautiful on Wednesday for their graduation pictures! They are growing up! They are learning how to add with manipulatives in Math class and are learning about the digraph “sh”.

Ms. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is growing tomato plants. They are learning about 3D shapes in Math, and, in Science, they are learning about breathing.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a fabulous time at the Wildlife Exhibition on Wednesday! Thanks to Ali and Ara’s mom and Makayla’s Nan and Pop who came and helped out. The students in Mrs. George’s class are learning about tangrams in Math, and they were doing lots of experiments throughout the week for our Science Fair.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning how lifestyles in the past were different from today. They are also making predictions about the future. The grade two’s are also learning about evaporation. They really enjoyed going to the Wildlife Exhibition.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class had a great time at the National Wildlife Exhibition at the Pepsi Centre on Wednesday. They also had an exciting week because they had a Skype Video chat with dental workers who took the money they raised to Haiti! It was very cool!

Ms. Williams’ grade five and six class really enjoyed the Science Fair. The grade five class had their last spelling test for the year on Wednesday, while the grade six class had their last spelling test last Wednesday (Yahoo!). Both classes learned more about pronouns this week and how to use them correctly in the subjective, objective, and possessive cases.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level one class worked hard this week as they had lots of tests and quizzes. They also worked hard on their Science Fair projects and enjoyed presenting them today. They just finished their television commercials and their “Work Place Safety Hazard” video.


Coming Up

On Thursday, May 10th, our school will participate in “Jump Rope for Heart”. This will be a casual dress day.

This Saturday, May 5th, Kennedi Boland, Abby Companion, Nicole Keeping, Maria Reynolds, Gina Spencer, and Alex Williams will be participating in the Western Regional Heritage Fair at G.C.Rowe. We want to wish these students “Congratulations and all the best!” The fair is open to the public for viewing from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

We also would like to wish all the best to Lauren Davis, who will participate in a gymnastics competition in Gander this weekend.

Congratulations and best of luck to Caylie Blake, Kennedi Boland, Anna Brake, Abby Companion, Brooklyn Companion, and Bethany Whelan, who will be involved in a figure skating test day this Saturday and Sunday.

Next Saturday, May 12th, our school has been invited to host a Drive One 4UR Community Drive One 4UR School Event, sponsored by Ford of Canada. It will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on our school parking lot. It costs nothing to participate and it will only take a few minutes of your time. This is a fundraiser for our community playground project and we have the opportunity to raise $6000.00 dollars. We will receive $20.00 dollars per test drive/one per household. Please bring your driver’s license.
