A Week Filled With Stars and Apples

IHMS chamber choir sang in “The Stars of the Festival” on Tuesday. They did a great job. The chamber choir received the $50 Bonnell Cole Janes Scholarship.

Last Friday we were very busy. We celebrated Apply Day at the breakfast program and had a St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt. We searched for items like green pencils and calculators. Everybody had fun. The winners were the grade 1 class in the primary category and the grade 5/6 in the elementary category.

Also last Friday Patrick Davis, Sarah Yetman, Andrew Dolomount and Mrs. McCarthy went to the Winter Carnival awards ceremony. We got a plaque and a cheque for $100 as the winner of the elementary snow sculpture contest. The students also received cool winter carnival hats. Hats off to everyone for your hard work!

There was a parent information session for September 2010 for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten parents on Wednesday. The orientation for the new students will be next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

Today classes are observing Earth Hour 2010. This is a time when we turn out the lights and think of ways to conserve energy and keep our earth green!

Today is our monthly casual day. Lots of students are wearing their jeans and t-shirts.

Stars of the Week
Students Jasmine Penney and Carla Du Toit won scholarships at the Rotary Music Festival. Jasmine won the $50 Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship for singing and piano and Carla won the $50 Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship for singing. Congratulations everyone! Our school would also like to congratulate IHMS graduate Yvette Coleman who was the Senior Rose Bowl winner.

Hard work really does pay off. Congratulations to IHMS graduate Haley Kawaja who has been awarded a scholarship to Queen’s University for $95,000.

Congratulations to grade 1 student McKenna Batstone who won a gold medal last weekend at the Marble Mountain Ski Race. Good Job!

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are doing Easter crafts and welcoming an intern from The College of the North Atlantic who will be helping with the class. Her name is Vicki Janes.

The Kindergarten class is learning length in math and about families in social studies.

The Grade 1 class is adding and subtracting in math. They are learning about structures in science and the true meaning of Easter in religion.

The Grade 2 class is doing a novel study and Easter activities.

The grade 3 and 4 class has got a new class pet. He is a hamster named Nibbles. They are doing a challenge to keep all their stuff off the floor. Last Friday as part of science class they went on a tour of the new town hall building site. They learned about structures from city engineer Mr. Jim Warford.

The Grade 5 and 6 class has finished their photo essays. They are working hard at their D.A.R. E. essays and their speeches for the Elementary Speak Off.

The Junior High class is looking forward to making pancakes from scratch for their last cooking class. They are keeping track of their daily spending habits and learning about financial fitness.

Coming-Up
On Sunday the girls basketball team will play two exhibition games one against the parents at 6:00 pm and then against the teachers at 7:00 pm. All students, parents and family members are welcome to come and cheer on the teams.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school on March 29th for a family event from 7-9 pm and March 30th from 9-12 and 1-3 pm.

Easter break begins on Thursday, April 1st at 2:50 pm. There will be no after school program on April 1.
