Staff and students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School showed their support for Anti-Bullying on Wednesday by wearing pink shirts and discussing how we can conquer bullying in and outside of the classroom. We would like to thank the Grade 7 class who created an anti-violence video. They broadcasted the video Wednesday morning to inform students about anti-bullying. Their video was selected to appear on Rogers Cable 9 on Wednesday evening.

Last Thursday, we hosted the annual I.H.M.S. Winter Carnival. Mr. Gillard did a great job in organizing a wonderful schedule of activities. The Junior High students did a super job helping with the stations and helping with the younger children. Congratulations are extended to Callie Gill and Kate Lombard who won the J.K. colouring contest. Darcy Brake, Heather Cooper, and Clara Ryan  who were chosen The Most Spirited and Sportsmanlike and to Mrs. George’s class who won the Most Spirited Class.

On Thursday evening our school hosted the annual Corner Brook Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. We would like to congratulate Sam Antle, Hailey Colbourne, Brooklynn Companion, Chenoah Park, Clara Ryan, and Gina Spencer who did really well at the Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all participants. We would like to thank Miss Park and Miss Neary for organizing the event.

Many thanks are extended to Mrs. McCarthy who was the announcer, Mr. Chris Banks and Mr. Stephen LeDrew who were the judges.

The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. We would like to thank our families and student for their support once again of our book fairs. Our book fair sales were almost $3,500. We would like to thank Mrs. George for organizing the Scholastic Book Fair. Thanks are also extended to our teachers and Mr. Wayne George who helped with the fair. Congratulations are extended to Jacob Bursey who won the Guess the Number of Pages in the Book Contest, Alexie Genest and Liam Dawe who won the Guess the Marshmallow Contest, and to Heather Cooper who won the family door prize of $25.

We would like to thank Mr. Howard Sparkes, owner of Sparkes Trucking, who delivered the polycarbonate for our Greenhouse.

We would like to welcome Mrs. Beverley Perrett to our I.H.M.S. staff, working in the Junior Kindergarten Program.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School Community would like to congratulate Mr. Gene Coleman, Chair of our Board and his wife, Janice on the birth of their baby daughter, Grace.

We would like to welcome; Amanda Barrington, Michael Coleman, Graham Downey-Sutton, Tawsha Evoy, Emily Major, Brittany McFatridge, Brittany Norman, Bruce Parsons, Jessica Sceviour Ashley Smith to our school, who will be doing their community placement in the Junior Kindergarten classes Kindergarten English and French classes.

We would like to thank the members of the Rotary Club for coming to our school and reading to our students. All classes enjoyed all the readers. Thank you so much for contributing $500 worth of books to our classrooms.

March is Nutrition month. Our school will be participating in a “Crunch and Sip” campaign.

On Monday, March 4th we will be hosting our Mid-Year Assembly at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend. 

On Monday, March 4th school will open at 9:00a.m. because of a planned power outage by Newfoundland Light and Power.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: These children are discussing lions and lambs and completing activities on them. They would like to congratulate Luke Coleman on his new baby sister, Grace.

Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are learning addition in Math and physical education in Health.

Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: These students are learning new words that start with the letter P. They are also learning body parts in French and practicing addition problems in Math. Finally, they are learning about emotions/feelings in Health.

Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the students are exploring measurement in Mathematics.  They are also learning about the story of St. Patrick and learning vocabulary around the special day. They would like to congratulate Claire on the arrival of her baby sister.

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students are learning how to cover area in Math. They are also writing postcards in Social Studies. They really enjoyed their pizza party they had on Wednesday as their prize for the Winter Carnival Day.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in the class started a new unit in Science called Matter. They read a book called “Gifts.” They are making beautiful pictures out of plasticine of where they would like to travel.

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: These students are excited for the “Crunch and Sip.” This will take place during the afternoons beginning Friday, March 1st.   

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: This week the students enjoyed Mayor Greely’s visit to their classroom. Mayor Greely read to the grade5/6 as a part of the Rotary Read-A-Long.

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High class: The Junior High students are completing their model bridges and will showcase them tomorrow at 10a.m. at the Corner Brook Plaza

J.K. Students participate in National Flag Day
 
Staff and students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School are continuing to enjoy winter activities and having some winter carnival fun of their own.

On Friday, our school held an Assembly for National Flag Day. The Knights of Columbus has initiated a National Flag Day Project promoting patriotism. It is their goal to present every school in the country with a Canada Flag. Our school was the first school in the country to be presented a Canadian Flag. Each homeroom represented a different province or territory, and presented facts about each place. The Knights of Columbus formed an honour guard as our students paraded in the gym carrying flags and banners from their province or territory. We would like to thank; Mr. Joe Byrne, Mr.Kevin Dunphy, Mr. Leo Fagan, Mr. Paul Gillingham, Mr. Gord Lannon, Mr. Mike Leonard, and Mr. Garland Parsons who represented the 4th Degree of The Knights of Columbus.
 
We would also like to thank Will Goodridge and Claire Reynolds who did a great job emceeing. Jasmine Batstone (Kdgt. English) and Riley Power (Kdgt. French Immersion) accepted the Canadian Flag presented by Mr. Gord Lannon. Maria Reynolds and Hannah Sparkes were flag bearers in the honour guard,

Congratulations are extended to Caylie Blake and Anna Brake, members of the Silver Blades Synchronized Figure Skating Team who won a silver medal at the Provincial Championship in the Elementary Category in St. John’s over the weekend.

Congrats are extended to Claire Brake and Abigail Woodford, members of the Silver Blades Synchronized Figure Skating Team who won a silver medal in the Can Skate category at the Provincial Championship in St. John’s this past weekend.

On Monday the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club hosted a Lip Sync Contest. Caylie Blake placed 2nd.

We hosted the Corner Brook Winter Carnival Spelling Bee on Thursday evening.

On Thursday our school also held its Annual Carnival Day. Students took part in outdoor activities, played basketball with their teachers and dressed in bright colours to help celebrate winter and to foster school spirit!

Our Grade 6 girls’ basketball team will play Templeton this afternoon.

Student Council members are busy rolling pennies. Please continue to bring in those pennies!

We would like to thank the Junior High students who created our lovely snow sculpture. 

 
Class News


The Junior Kindergarten: These students are learning how special they are through songs, and through activities like creating self portraits and looking at their finger prints.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students are learning all about the letter D and making different combinations of numbers to 5 in Mathematics.  

Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students enjoyed going to the hospital for their field trip.

Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: The Grade One class is learning about sounds and hearing in Science. The Grade Twos are learning about cost and demand in Social Studies and applying it to the sales of their Super Soap Store. They have made $60 selling home-made soaps! Thank-you! They are now studying insects in Science.
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: These students have started book chats and are doing a fantastic job! They are learning about the Atlantic Provinces in Social Studies. They are also learning about the characteristics of different objects in Science.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in this class are learning about consumers in Social Studies. They would like to wish Colin Spencer a very happy birthday! In Math they are learning about doubles. In Science they are learning about pollution. 
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: The grade 3/4 finished the ski program this week and had a great lunch at the lodge. The class would like to thank the Blow Me Down instructors for all of their wonderful help and time.

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: This week the students enjoyed taking part in the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. They also had a blast taking part in Carnival Day. These students are looking forward to next week when they can shoot their instructional/directional videos in Language Arts.

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High class: The Junior High students are putting the finishing touches on their Popsicle bridges. They are currently working on research projects for Language Arts. In Technology they are shooting an anti-bullying video.

This week has been a busy one at Immaculate Heart of Mary School. This week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week. We would like to thank all of our wonderful teachers for all their hard work and dedication. We would also like to thank the many parents who cooked or donated recess treats as well as lunch this week for our amazing teachers.
 
We would like to thank the Corner Brook Minor Baseball Association who donated a Winter Ball Kit to our school.
 
We would once again like to thank the Grade 3/4 class who have been continuously helping with our composting program, even in the very cold temperatures.
  
Congratulations are extended to Keely Brothers who performed well at the Frosty Flip gymnastics competition in Mount Pearl.
   
On Tuesday, Pancake Day the staff hosted a pancake breakfast for students and families. We would like to thank Mrs. Shirley Porter and Mrs. Janet Murphy Goodridge, and the many teachers who helped with the breakfast. We also celebrated the 100th day of school on Tuesday. Some of our primary classes created their own t-shirts and hats for the day.
  
Wednesday was Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.
  
Thursday was Valentine’s Day: The student council sold chocolates and carnations. They are donating the profits to the Greenhouse Project. For Valentines we hosted a theme day: Red and Pink!
  
National Flag Day is today. Each homeroom dressed in the colors of one of our provinces and paraded in the gym for our National Flag Day Assembly. The Knights of Columbus donated a Canada Flag to our school, the first like it in Canada. This is a national project to promote patriotism. Their goal is for every school in our country to have a flag.
  
The Corner Brook Winter Carnival begins today and our school will host the Annual Winter Carnival Spelling Bee next Thursday in our gym at 7:00p.m. 
  
Mme. Mondoux’s class and Ms. Park’s class are selling their own soaps. Sales have been incredible forcing both groups to make more!
 
School will be closed for the holiday Monday, February 18th.
 
  
Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: These students really enjoyed the 100th day of school by creating headbands and fruit loop necklaces. They all loved Valentine’s Day and getting ready for it by making Valentines for their loved ones. They also enjoyed celebrating the Newfoundland and Labrador flag for Flag Day.
 
Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students enjoyed going on their field trip to the hospital. They also enjoyed creating Valentine cards for their loved ones.
 
Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students enjoyed going to the hospital for their field trip.
 
Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the students are selling home-made eco-friendly soaps. Come by and see for yourself! They also are learning O’Canada in French for Flag Day.
 
Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students really enjoyed all their activities on the 100th day of school, especially shining up the pennies with ketchup in Science class! They also loved celebrating Valentine’s Day and Flag Day this week.
 
Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in the class are selling environmentally friendly handmade soaps. They also had fun making Valentine card holders and other Valentine’s Day crafts.
 
Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four Class: In Grade 3/4 the students have been preparing for National Flag Day, and are very excited to be all dressed in yellow, blue and red. Next Tuesday, they will be having lunch at the Blow Me Down Ski Lodge before an afternoon of heading out to ski. They had a busy week preparing for Valentine’s Day. 
   
Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six Class: This week the students are preparing for the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. They were busy this week helping fundraise with the student council.
 
Mr. Hancock’s Junior High class: The Junior High Science classes would like to wish Mr. Spencer a very happy birthday today!  These students enjoyed building bridges. They are also having fun creating Violence Prevention Videos. They would like to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!

February is going by quickly and students and staff at Immaculate Heart of Mary School are working hard. We are looking forward to the warmer months ahead.

We would like to congratulate Natalie Caines, Carter Bromley, Will Brothers, Samuel Buckle, Gavin Doman, Noah Evans, Summer Gale,  Ryan Lombard, Cohen Mackey, Ella Rashleigh, Caleb Rashleigh, Cohan Vardy and Riley Wilton who won a medal at a Timbit Hockey Tournament in Stephenville this past weekend.

We would like to extend best wishes to Keely Brothers who will be participating in a gymnastics competition in St. John’s this weekend!

We would also like to congratulate Samuel Blackwood who broke his first board in Tae Kwando.

On Monday the prayer group hosted a celebration for Saint Valentine.

Report cards were distributed to Grade 7-Level I students on Wednesday.

The Read-A-Long Program for the French Immersion classes from Kdgt-Grade 2 began this week. High School students are hosting these sessions.

On Wednesday and Thursday Sandra Burden from the School Milk Foundation did presentations to Kdgt- Grade 6 classes. The presentations addressed the heath concerns of the Provincial Curriculum from Kdgt to Grade 6.

We are still collecting pennies in aid of our Greenhouse Project!

Next Week’s Events

Next Week is Teacher Appreciation Week.

Tuesday: 100th day of school! This day will also be Pancake Day. The Staff will be preparing pancakes!

Wednesday: Ash Wednesday. Mass will be today.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten: The children have been getting ready for Valentine’s Day. They would like to welcome their new student, Rotém Phillips Grobbelaar.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten class: This week the students are learning to count by 5’s. They are also learning how to read, and are learning about giraffes in Science.

Mmé Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week the students are learning about St. Valentine and creating crafts in preparation for the special day.

Mme. Mondoux Grade One and Two French Immersion class:  This week the students are having fun creating marketing concepts to sell environmentally friendly soaps next week.

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: The Grade One class had fun learning about groundhogs and learning about measurement in Math. They are having fun writing about Valentines and creating some lovely crafts.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: This week the students are creating 4 different kinds of soaps as a project in Social Studies. They are also creating commercials, posters, and pamphlets to promote their products. They had fun learning about healthy foods in the School Milk Foundations Presentations.  

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class:  In this class the Grade 3’s are almost finished the “Build It Up” Science unit. The Grade 4 class is learning about light in Science. The class is looking forward to Valentines Art porjects and preparing for International Flag Day.

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six class: This week the Grade 5/6 class are preparing for the upcoming music festival.

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High and Level One class: These students have been busy getting ready for the upcoming Build and Bridge Competition and preparing a Violence Prevention video.

The Grade 3/4 class enjoy cross country skiing this past week at Blowmedown Ski Club

 
The Junior High students enjoy an afternoon of skiing at Marble Mountain

 

Students and staff of Immaculate Heart of Mary School have been enjoying the winter season. Many classes have taken to the outdoors, sliding, and skiing!

We would like to congratulate Caylie Blake who won a gold medal in the Juvenile Women Under 11 Category and to Anna Brake who won a bronze medal in that same category. The girls competed in the Divisional Figure Skating Competition in Gander this past weekend.

Congratulations are also extended to Sam Antle whose Atom All-Star Hockey Team won a gold medal at the Mt. Peyton Atom All Star Tournament held in Grand Falls this past weekend.

Congratulations are extended to Gina Spencer, Hannah Sparkes, and Charlotte Sweetapple on their performance in the Dance Studio West’s production of Snow White last weekend.

We would like to thank our students and families for the wonderful response to our Penny Drive. Due to this wonderful response, we are continuing this Drive. Many thanks!

The casual day on Thursday was in aid of our Green House Project.

Mrs. George and Ms. Park participated in a training session this week for Mathletics. They are very excited to be using this with their students.

Today Lifetouch Photography did a Spring Shout session with our students.

February Month is Violence Prevention Month.

Miss Payne’s Grade 3/4 class had a great time cross country skiing this week. This 4 week program is part of the Phys. Ed. Program.

The Grade 7- Level I Report Cards will be distributed on Wednesday, February 7th. Also, on Wednesday morning Mrs. Hodder’s Kgt. English class and Mme. Pérez Diaz class will be participating in the annual Western Memorial Orientation Session. They will get to see all kinds of interesting things!
 

Class News


The Junior Kindergarten: These students are Ice Cube painting this week. They are also learning about shadows and ground activities. Samual Buckle broke his first board in Tae Kwando this past week, Congratulations!

Mrs. Hodder’s English Kindergarten class: These students enjoyed making groups of 4 in Math. In Language Arts they are looking at the letter S and in Science they are learning about habitats and the wild.

Mme. Pérez-Diaz’s French Immersion Kindergarten class: This week, the students are learning new winter words in French and new songs. We are learning about family trees in Social Studies. One of our students, Alex King, broke his very first board in Karate on January 26th. Bravo Alex!

Mme. Mondoux’s Grade One and Two French Immersion class: This week the students are learning about consumers and producers in Grade 2 Social Studies. They are researching how to make homemade soap for next week.

Mrs. George’s Grade One English class: In Grade 1 the students are excited to have started Mathletics online this week. They are beginning book chats on Monday.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The students in the class are happy to welcome their new classmate, Aria Kazerouni. These students are learning about needs and wants in Social Studies.

Ms. Payne’s Grade Three and Four class: In Grade 3/4 the students had great weather for skiing on Tuesday. The students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. The grade 3 class has successfully started building bridges and houses with popsicle sticks in Science. The grade 4 Math class will soon be ready for a test on data and relationships.

Ms. Neary’s Grade Five and Six class: The Grade 5/6 class is writing short stories for the TD Book writing competition. The Grade 6 class was excited to present their movie, “Caution Sign Mira,” to the school. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their movie. They would like to wish a happy birthday to Hailey Colbourne.

Mr. Hancock’s Junior High class: These students enjoyed their last day of skiing on Wednesday. The Grade 9 class is learning about migration and immigration in Social Studies. Next week they will begin to build their bridges for the Building the Bridge Competition.
