This week at Immaculate Heart of Mary students made extra efforts to incorporate environmental friendliness into their classrooms as we celebrated Earth Day Monday April 22nd. We celebrated in many ways. We had a theme day wearing earth colours. Our classes wrote a poem, song or chant and presented it from the media center! Brian McHugh of CBC Radio interviewed Liam Dawe, Claire Reynolds and Alex Williams regarding Earth Day. We had our litter free recess and lunch. Primary classes made Earth Day headbands and necklaces. They planted seedlings and read stories on Habitats. Miss Park`s and Mme Mondoux`s class cleaned the school property, church property and surrounding area.

Our Junior High Students kicked off Earth Day by presenting this poem to our school community from our media center.

Junior High Earth Day Poem
Blue and green sphere
We all live here
And yet everyday
We throw garbage away
Causing it harm
Why all the alarm?
From a planet far away, an alien named Michael
Came down to the Earth and told us to recycle
He said: “Follow this rule,
It’s super cool!”
If you Reduce, Recycle, Reuse!
There’s no way you can lose!
And then from that day
No one threw anything away!
And the Earth was saved!

This week is National Volunteer week and we would like to thank the many volunteers who help at our school. In June, we will be recognizing our volunteers at our annual Volunteer Breakfast.

We would like to thank the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club who donated two tickets to their annual ice show. Matthew and Alexandra Young visited our school to draw the winning entries: Kira McCarthy and Gina Spencer and to have their picture taken with Kira and Gina. We would like to wish Matthew a speedy recovery.

We would like to congratulate Mariam Ahmad, McKenna Batstone, Caylie Blake, Samuel Blackwood, Anna Brake, Claire Brake, Natalie Caines, Jenna Cammie, Kaitlyn Coade, Yazan Ismail, Mark James, Rebecca Janes, Jayden Lemprière, Lucas Neville, Olivia Park, Rotém Philipps-Grobbelaar, Sophie Simms, Colin Sheppard, and Abigail Woodford, on their performance at the Ice Show!

We would like to wish best of luck to Keely Brothers, a member of the Provincial Gymnastics Team, who is competing at the Atlantic Championship in Nova Scotia

This week is also Healthy Beverage Week. We are encouraging everyone to drink milk, water and non-sugar beverages.

Tuesday was World Book Day and our students enjoy reading every day!

On Thursday our Grade 5/6 classes finished their five week yoga session with Ms. Jessi Martin. They enjoyed it very much and would like to thank Ms. Martin.

We would like to extend best wishes to Ms. Paige Marche-Sherran who finished her work placement today in the J. K. Program.

Our Girls’ Soccer Team will be participating in the invitational tournament at Sacred Heart this weekend. Their first game is at 9:00a.m. tomorrow morning.
