This week was foster Family Week.
On Thursday the student council hosted a pajama day and slumber party in the gym. Students in grades 2-10 watched a movie in the gym and the k and grade 1 classes watched movies together. Each student donated $2 for the Janeway Telethon.
Please remember we are still recycling cell phones. Last week we hosted the launch of the Recycle my Cell Campagin. Maria Reynolds and Hajra Ahmad prepared an awesome video for the launch. Douglas MacKenzie was the emcee and the grade 3 and 4 choir performed two songs about recycling. Also, Mme LaChance’s grade 2 and 3 class and Mrs. Foley’s grade 3 and 4 class made special collection boxes. On the very first day we collected 225 cell phones. The campaign ends on November 22 . We are asking students to collect as many cell phones as they can!
Last week we also hosted our school book fair. We raised a big total of $3,112.15. We had some prize winners for the jelly bean counting contest. They were Emily Hindy, Hailey Batt, and Heather Cooper who won posters. Students who guessed the closest number of pages in a pile of books was Reyd Ward, Grace Brake Higgins and Charlise Simmons.
At the Stephenville Regional Cross Country Running event we had nine runners. Everyone did an awesome job. Our runners were Clare Coleman, Heather Cooper, Jack Matthews, Lucas Neville, Aria Kazerouni, Ryan Murphy, Jack Ryan, Clara Ryan and Chloe Colbourne.
Our ITV school reporters this week were Clare Coleman, Makenzy Bishop, Sara Ismail and Ryan Bennett.


Stars of The Week
Congratulations to Gina Spencer who was the provincial winner in the Good Governance Essay Contest.

Congratulations to Abigail Woodford who participated in the Rebecca Pack Figure Skating Competition in Gander.

 
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are doing Halloween activities. The nursing students who were working with them in the classroom also finished up this week.
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is singing lots of Halloween songs. They had a great time on pajama day and watching the Halloween movie.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning words that start with the letter “f”. Their class pets are growing really well.
Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class has started their new social studies unit on identity. They had a great time on pajama day. They are looking forward to Halloween.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been having lots of fun playing games with estimation. They are very excited about their mystery art project.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is having lots of fun doing Halloween worksheets and activities. In social studies they are learning about rights and responsibilities.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing a unit on spiders in science. They are also learning about estimations in math.
Mme. LaChance’s grade 2 and 3 French Immersion class was playing with money this week. They were looking at combinations to make 50 cents and one dollar. Students are really good with math and money. They can count by 5, 10, and 25! They are also counting down the days until Halloween.
Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class is using warm and cool colours in art to create pumpkin and ghost collages for Halloween. They are very proud of Arabella and Alessandra LeBlanc who appeared in the opera, Sister Angelica, last weekend at the Gary Graham Theatre.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great time on pajama day for the Janeway telethon. They have are starting to learn Remembrance Day. They are the symbols of remembrance and talking about sacrifice.
Ms. Jones’ junior high and level 1 class is working on integer problems. In language arts they are finishing up their topic on what it means to be a global citizen.



Coming Up

Join us for a Zumba Class in aid of the Skills Challenge trip to St. John’s in November. The class is on Tuesday, October 29 at 7 pm in our gym. The cost is $5 per person.

Halloween is October 31st. Students can dress up for Halloween.

There will also be a leaf raking day on November 2 from 9 am to 4 pm.  If you would like to have your lawn raked for a donation you can contact the main office.

We hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving weekend.

On Wednesday a Book Fair took place in the school’s cafeteria. Also, we showed our support for cancer research by wearing a pink ribbon for Dress for the Cause Day.

Students also had litter free lunches on Wednesday for Waste Reduction Week. Some other things we are doing this week to celebrate are using less paper, turning off the lights and talking about recycling.

On Thursday we hosted the official launch for the Recycle My Cell Challenge in our gym.  Our cross country runners took part in a meet in Stephenville.  And in the evening our school hosted the Scholastic Book Fair Family night event.
 
This week was Good Governance Week. Our grade six students wrote essays on what good governance means to them.

Our ITV school reporters last week were Nathan Anderson, Jayden Lempriere, McKenna Batstone and Lucas Neville. This week they are Nicolas Moreno, Madison Noel, Cole Dumaresque and William Bennett.


Stars of The Week
Congratulations to Anna Brake who received first place in the provincial Foster Family Writing competition and Jack Ryan who received second place for the elementary categories. Also, congratulations to Kate Lombard who was the winner for the elementary provincial drawing competition.

There were some fast runners last Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Track meet and here’s the names of the stars, they are: Jack Ryan, Clara Ryan, Ryan Bennett, William Bennett, Isaac Buckingham, Clare Coleman, Aria Kazerouni, Heather Cooper, Emily Murley, Ryan Murphy, Colin Spencer, and Telicia Young.  Congratulations to Telicia Young who placed in the top five.

Also this week, Jorga Perett was a firefighter for a day! She was picked up at the school and rode in the fire truck with Mr. George.
Thank you to Mrs. George and all her volunteers for another successful Scholastic Book Fair.
 
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are making Chai monsters for Halloween and are doing lots of Halloween activities. They would like to congratulate Charlise Simmonds’ family who welcomed a new baby girl and Ivor Cook’s family who welcomed a new baby boy to their families. Also, there are two new College of the North Atlantic interns in their classes this week. They are Stephanie Jennings and Annette Cummings.
 
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class loved the turkey dinner. Thank you to everyone who helped. They all had a nice long weekend and are ready to be hard at work again. They have started a unit called “All About Me” in social studies and are learning about what makes them unique.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class loved the Thanksgiving dinner on Friday. They are working on “t” words and sounds. They are starting a new social studies unit on identity.
Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class is starting a numbers unit in math.  They are starting a plant experiment unit as well. They really enjoyed the turkey dinner on Friday.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class  really enjoyed visiting the book fair and seeing all the new books.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing spooky Halloween writing and crafts this week. In science they are learning about the seasons.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is making bird feeders in science and learning about money in math.
Mme. LaChance’s grade 2 and 3 French Immersion class made cards for their parents last week for Thanksgiving. They thanked them for the toys they have, the time they spend together, the great food and home they have. They realized that not all children have these things and that they are very lucky! The grade 3 students wrote postcards to special people and mailed them!
Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class is really enjoying their class novel, Gregor the Overlander. They are anxious to see if their predictions will be correct. On Wednesday they wore pink ribbons on their uniforms to bring awareness to cancer research.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a guest speaker. Mr. Pat Gambin from the Knights of Columbus visited them to talk about the Squires Program. They had a great time at the Scholastic Book Fair. The grade 5’s had a science test today. They would like to remind everyone to bring in their used cell phones.
Ms. Jones’ junior high and level 1 class enjoyed the Thanksgiving celebration at the school on Friday. They were also really excited to help with the launch of the Recycle my Cell Campaign.
Coming Up

Next week is Foster Family Week.

We will be having a healthy commotion on Monday.


We are collecting used cell phones for the Recycle My Cell Campaign.


School will be closed on October 25th for a Professional Development Day.

All classes participated in an open house for IHMS's Greenhouse this week. Parents were invited to attend. Featured in the photo are students from Ms. Park's grade 2 class: Gavin Staples, Jorja Perrett, Keira Clarke, Will Brothers, Coen Mackey.
 
 

On our medical theme day we raised $1080! Thank you everyone who dressed up and donated. Everyone looked awesome!

This week is Education Week, Kids Eat Smart Week and Fire Prevention Week.

On Tuesday we had a Fire drill with the fire fighters and on Wednesday we had a practice lock down with the police department. Everyone did great.

On Monday we started the 5210 half marathon challenge. We played FITGO to start the first day off.

On Tuesday the grade 4 Health Class hosted a special Family event. Students invited their families and even their pets to school for a special party with their teacher Ms. Scott.

On Wednesday the vegetable orders arrived. Thank you to the junior high and level one students who helped organize them in the cafeteria.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we had a grand opening of the greenhouse. All the classes visited to learn about the greenhouse and the heat pumps.

Today we are having a yummy Thanksgiving dinner that the students at Academy Canada cooked and the parents served. Thank you for the awesome meal!

Our Student Leadership Council organized a food drive for the Corner Brook Food Bank. Thank you to the families that donated.


Stars of The Week

 
Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy who completed her first half marathon last Sunday!

Congratulations to our cross country runners who participated in a running meet at Jubilee Field organized by Sacred Heart.

Class News
 
The junior kindergarten classes visited the greenhouse on Wednesday morning. They are learning all about fire prevention this week. They are busy finishing up their thanksgiving activities. 
 
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the letter “j”. Now they can read the word “Je”. Everyone is very excited! In art they turned themselves into turkeys and are thankful for so much.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “h” with sounds, words and sentences. They are also learning about the pilgrims and what they are thankful for.
Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class is learning sight words in language. In math the class is finishing their unit on patterns. In science they are learning about plants and finishing their turkeys with their hand and foot prints.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class  got a new fish. The kids are very excited. The class are representing numbers from 1-20. They are learning about the weather in science.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a wonderful time planting seeds in the greenhouse on Thursday. They started their spelling tests and everyone is doing really well. In math they are building numbers in different ways.
Ms. Park’s grade two class is making bird feeders in science. They enjoyed planting seeds this week in the greenhouse. They are looking forward to learning all about the life cycle of plants. In language class they are writing about how to cook a turkey.
Mme. LaChance’s grade 2 and 3 French Immersion class was in disguise for medical theme day. They talked about the next Halloween and they are creating a special scene with pencils and started to work on their Halloween activity books. The grade 3 students are sending postcards from school to a special person.
Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class made stress balls in health class while they were learning about how to manage stress. They welcome a new student to their class this week. His name is Jericho San Jose. He has moved to Corner Brook from the Philippines. They made Thanksgiving wreathes in art class and are looking forward to the long weekend. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had an awesome time on their field trip to the Chrappa Family’s home in Steady Brook for apple picking, exploring and a camp fire on Thursday. The students were excited to meet Mrs. McCarthy’s daughter Zoe who got to come with them. It was a long week with assignments and quizzes and they are looking forward to the long weekend!
Ms. Jones’ junior high and level 1 class welcomes a new student to their class. Jarius San Jose has moved to Corner Brook from the Philippines. The students are busy with all their classes and fundraising for their skills challenge in November.
Coming Up

Pink Ribbon Day for Breast Cancer is on Wednesday. Students and teachers will be wearing pink ribbons.


The recycle my cell campaign official launch will be on Thursday at IHMS.

Today is medical theme day. There are many doctors, nurses and patients in our school. Thank you to everyone for your donations for the Western Memorial Radiothon.

On Tuesday our junior kindergarten to grade 6 students were part of a Donna & Andy concert in our gym. It was awesome. A lot of students got to participate in singing, acting and dancing.

Our student council elections were held this week.  They are collecting items for the thanksgiving food drive.

On Wednesday our cross country running team took part in a meet. The runners were Emily Murley, Jack Ryan, Clara Ryan, William Bennett,  Ryan Bennett and Ryan Murphy. Congratulations to Ryan Murphy finished in the top 5.

On Thursday there was a meeting for parents of students in grades 6-10 for the upcoming Skills Challenge taking place in Mount Pearl in November.

Vegetable orders are due today! They will be delivered to the school on Wednesday.

October is library month!

This week our school IHMS news reporters were Juan Ramirez, Keely Brothers, Emma Doman, and Amna Ahmad.



Stars of The Week
Congratulations to the students who were elected to the student council. This year the Prime Minister is Sara Ismail, Deputy Prime Ministers are Douglas MacKenzie and Hajra Ahmad, the Secretary is Keely Brothers, Primary Representative is Gina Spencer, and class representatives are Isaac Buckingham, Amna Ahmad, Jack Ryan, Madison Noel, Mira Ismail, and Maria Reynolds. Special thanks to Mrs. Foley for organizing the election and acting as the teacher sponsor.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Frost and Furious Mountain Bike Races held on Sunday. Ben Griffin won first place in the Mud Spud Division and Rachael Griffin was one of the top overall riders in her division.

Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy who had an essay published in a research book about Newfoundland grandparents.


Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning all about fall and water absorption. They welcome nursing students to their classroom, they are: Lindsay Bursey, Jonathan Ferland, Alicia Matthews, Lawrence McCarthy, Jeffrey Siddal, Melanie Small, and Philip Street. They would like to wish congratulations to Owen Kelly and his family on the birth of his baby sister.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has planted beans. They already have a stem and leaves. They have started a numbers unit in math.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on “E” words, sentences and sounds. They are starting a plant unit in science. They are planting their seeds in the school greenhouse.

Ms. Parson’s Kindergarten English class had so much fun at the Donna and Andy concert on Tuesday. Daniel Osmond got up and learned a new dance he will be teaching to the entire class. They are learning a brand new list of sight words and are starting to print in their journals.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had a great time at the Donna and Andy concert on Tuesday. They are looking forward to the greenhouse open house next week.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing thankful thoughts. In math, they are identifying and ordering groups of objects to 10. They really loved the Donna and Andy show on Tuesday and planting trees with Ms. Hamlyn from the Department of Forestry on Thursday.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning how to skip count forward and backwards by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They are excited to be doing Thanksgiving writing and crafts.

Mme. LaChance’s grade 2 and 3 French Immersion class is learning about schools from the past. Students were surprised to learn that there was no electricity before, that students wrote on little chalkboards or with ink and quill. Now, they are working to build the school of the future.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class really enjoyed the Donna and Andy concert this week. They are listening to their CD every chance they get. It’s already October and they are learning about exploration by reading about Bear Grylls and Mount Everest.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed the Donna and Andy concert. Anna MacKenzie, Cheyenne Bursey, William Bruce-Robertson, Paige Walsh, and Cameron Peddle were part of the official crew who helped set up and hand out packages at the door.

Ms. Jones’ junior high and level 1 class went to Menchie’s this week with their class as part of a math lesson. They are excited about the student council starting up for the year. They are working hard in all their courses.
Coming Up
Participation Nation 5210 begins on Monday. This involves a challenge for students to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, less than two hours of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks.


We are having a greenhouse open house for students and families on Tuesday and Wednesday. Classroom visits will be scheduled. Parents are invited to visit the greenhouse with their child.

Next Friday will be our Thanksgiving Day dinner.
