The first photo is Mme. Ryan's French Immersion grade one students and Mme. LaChance's grade two French Immersion students planting pumpkin seeds in the greenhouse. The second photo is Mr. Simon Tibbo of the Corner Brook Tennis Club instructing grade one English student Alyssa Power during a tennis lesson. Mr. Tibbo visited the school on Monday and gave tennis lessons to the gym classes.

 
The grade 6 boys’ soccer team participated in a tournament last weekend at J.J. Curling School. The boys played three awesome games on Saturday. One even went into overtime! Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Riley Nadon for coaching the team.

This week on Wednesday we had another orientation session for the new junior kindergarten and kindergarten English and French Immersion students for September.

This week is Early Echildhood Education week. We would like to say a big thank you to our awesome Early Childhood Educators in Junior Kindergarten!

Our Janeway theme baskets were on display again this week. The draw will be today. Good luck to everyone who bought tickets. Thank you everyone for supporting this fundraiser and our casual day on Wednesday for the Janeway.

Yesterday was World Catholic Education Day. Classes celebrated with special activities and books about sharing our faith.

Today is the annual Science Fair. The parent viewing begins at 1:30 pm. We encourage everyone to come and view the student’s awesome projects.

Our school is very proud to announce that we received a grant of $2,400 to support our MindUp Curriculum from the Community Addictions Prevention Mental Health Promotion Fund Committee.

We were also the regional and national winners in the FedEx Environmental Awards.

Also, next week our school is being presented the Provincial Environmental Award for Youth Group / School in St. John’s as part of Environment week.


Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate Ben Griffin who placed third in the Mudslide Series on Sunday at Prince Edward Park.

Also congratulations to Colin Spencer who won two medals at a Karate tournament last weekend. He won a gold medal for Kata and a silver medal in sparring. He also received his blue belt last week.

Congratulations to Gordon and Gavin Staples who earned their yellow belts this week and chopped a piece of wood in half in Tae Kwon Do. Chase Rumbolt-Colbourne also received his yellow belt in Karate. Way to go, Gordon, Gavin, and Chase!

Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Dance Studio West’s production “Applause” last weekend. Our students who performed were: Jordyn Andrews, Sarah Buckingham, William Bruce-Robertson, Keira Clarke, Clare Coleman, Brooklynn Colbourne, Chloe Colbourne, Ava Ignor, Molly George, Kyah Goold, Sadie MacDonnell, Rotem Phillips-Grobelaar, Maria Reynolds, Lily Smallwood, Colin Spencer, Gina Spencer, Sarah Skinner, Abigail Tiller, and Lilah Walsh.
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are asking everyone to vote for their project proposal. You can vote once each day at www.learningproject.sct.org/ideas/276. This week is Early Childhood education Week.  The children are busy getting ready for the art show  and their science fair project on the life cycle of frogs. The junior kindergarten one class would like to thank Sylvia Philip for the donation to the classroom. They would also like to thank Kim Gunson, Nadia Cook and Lorena Power who donated items to the classroom.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class did a live broadcast for World Catholic Education Day. They had a blast singing one of the church songs. This week they rubbed potato slices all over the bathroom and discovered that the sink taps carry the most germs. We learned that is why proper hand-washing is so important. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was busy this week getting ready for the science fair today. They are looking forward to their graduation and the spring musical! They would like to congratulate Lily Smallwood and her family on their new baby boy, Drew Eric.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is very busy getting ready for the kindergarten graduation next Thursday. They went upstairs to visit Mrs. George’s grade one class for their orientation while the junior kindergarten students visited the kindergarten classroom.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is so excited to report that they now have 33 cocoons! In about a week or so they should have 33 beautiful butterflies in their classroom! They have also been busy working very hard on some really fun science experiments. They are looking forward to the science fair today!!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is very excited to have a new student, Jemma Butler, in their class this week!  They are working on addition and subtraction stories in math. They are very excited about the science fair today and getting to see all the student’s projects.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is incubating chick eggs for the next three weeks. They are presenting four science fair projects this afternoon. The student of the week for this week is Reyd.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class had a lot of fun doing science experiments this week. They are still working on their French comics. They are thinking about Mme LaChance and her family in Quebec this week. Nous voulons que vous recouvriez de votre maladie, Monsieur LaChance.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class had fun playing golf in gym class on Tuesday. They worked very hard on the science fair projects they will be presenting today. The grade three’s are finishing up their math curriculum and are almost done their study of landforms in social studies.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are happy to report they have finished their last spelling tests for the year! They are busy preparing for the year end spelling bee. The grade 5 students made talking sticks for social studies class. Both classes had a lot of fun painting games on the front walkway for the students to use at recess and lunch. They painted four square, hopscotch, a number line and a calculator outside.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class went on a hike at marble mountain for Enrichment class. They sat by the falls and wrote poetry. On Tuesday evening they had a Café Murder cast party at Mrs. King’s house. They enjoyed some desserts and watched a video of their performance. They are starting to prepare for their final exams.

Our art show is this Monday evening at 6:30 pm. During our art show we will have ‘Birds of Newfoundland’ framed prints by Roger Tory Peterson for sale. In addition, we will be hosting a silent auction of a print called “Ash Wednesday – Portrait of Al Pittman” by Gerald Squires. The bidding on the silent auction will continue until the close of school on June 25th.
The kindergarten graduation is Thursday, June 5th.
First Holy Communion will be on Sunday, June 8th at All Hallows Church.

We hope everyone had a great long weekend!

We started the week off with our Janeway fundraiser.  Tickets were on sale all week for the raffle theme baskets. There are baskets of BBQ supplies, kitchen items, candy, a movie basket and much more. Tickets are $0.50 each of 3 for $1. They are on sale until May 30!

Last weekend some of our students also had a lemonade stand to raise money for the janeway telethon. Hala Parsons, Lydia Parsons, Natalie Parsons, Kate Lombard, Rebecca Janes and Mark Janes donated all their earnings for the Janeway fundraiser. Thank you so much!

This week our school hosted orientation sessions for new junior kindergarten students, kindergarten English and French Immersion and grade 1 English and French Immersion on Wednesday afternoon. Our grade 1 students even got to go to grade 2 for the afternoon!

There is a boys’ soccer tournament this weekend at JJ Curling School. Our boys will play their first game today at 5 pm. They will also play on Saturday at 9 am and at noon.

We would like to congratulate Juan Ramirez the grade 7 school winner and Maria Reynolds the grade 8 school winner in the Gauss Math Competition.
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are doing nature activities and starting to work on their Father’s Day presents. The junior kindergarten three class would like to thank Ms. Sonya Perrett for the donation of toys to their classroom. Miss Jessi Martin applied for a grant for their playground. They are asking for everyone to vote for their project. Their idea is called “The Great Outdoors”, you can vote at http://learningproject.cst.org/ideas/276.
Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is busy preparing their science fair project on germs. They have started a new numbers unit in Math. They can count to 100 in French, wow!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was excited to spend the afternoon with Mrs. George on Wednesday in grade one. They are busy practicing songs and poems for the kindergarten graduation.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class would like to wish Ty Power a very happy 6th birthday. They hope he’s having so much fun in Florida! They are learning about time in math. They now know how to tell when it’s recess and lunch by looking at the clock!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is getting ready to plant in the school greenhouse. They can’t wait to see their caterpillars start to grow and turn into beautiful butterflies.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started their “feel good” books today. They are also practicing their experiments for the science fair next week. They really enjoyed the outdoor classroom this week.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is enjoying practicing for their First Holy Communion coming up in June.  They are enjoying watching their vegetables and flowers they plated begin to grow. The student of the week is Gavin.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class was learning about comics this week. In French, the students read and wrote comics. They also created comic characters in art class. They learned about the comic writer Prouche and they use the Prouche method to draw their comic characters.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class has completed their unit on Charlotte’s Web and got to watch the 1972 animate version. They also wrote comparisons about the novel and the video in their writing journals. It was interesting to make connections to the novel and see the characters come to life. The students are very excited about the Janeway raffle and have been buying tickets to try their luck at winning one of the baskets. In social studies they have been making their own river systems in the school yard.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class were very busy this week. The grade five students had a quiz yesterday and are learning about UNICEF and the UN Rights of the Child.  They also made talking sticks in social studies. The grade 6 students are beginning to prepare for their math CRT exam. In language arts they have finished their last spelling test and are writing stories.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class are working on completing their final units leading up to final exams.  Last week the grade seven and eight students wrote the Gauss math competition.
 



Our annual Art Show will be Monday, June 2 at 7 pm.
The kindergarten English and French Immersion graduation is June 5th.

The girls’ indoor soccer tournament was last weekend at Sacred Heart School. They did well. Good job, girls! Thank you to the coaches Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Ryley Nadon. The boys’ indoor soccer team has begun practicing for their upcoming tournament.

This week the Student Leadership Council was collecting items to make themed baskets for a Janeway fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who donated. The baskets will be put together and tickets will go on sale on May 20.

Our school was nominated for the Environmental Stewardship Award at the City of Corner Brook Annual Awards Ceremony. Mrs. King and Madison Noel attended for our school.

On Wednesday the junior high class had a presentation with Maddison Canning, Regional Director of Youth Ventures. We hope they learned a lot about starting up their own business.

We would like to congratulate Chantal Davis who works with our afterschool program and Edmund Walsh who volunteers with the prayer group for their convocation from Grenfell Campus last week!

This weekend is a long weekend. We are excited to celebrate the Queen’s birthday on Victoria Day. Have a wonderful Victoria Day weekend, everyone!

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate our junior high students who attended the “Lets Talk Science Challenge” at Grenfell Campus last Thursday.  Mira Ismail, Douglas Mackenzie, Nico Moreno, and Maria Reynolds won the gold medal and Iker Aguirre, Aléjandra Hernandez, Sara Ismail won bronze.
Congratulations to Abigail Tiller’s bowling team the “Chocolate Rolos” on winning a bronze medal. Also to Abigail and her uncle Troy who won the Twosome Bowling Competition.
Congratulations to hockey medalists Isaac Buckingham, Carter Bromley, Natalie Caines, Caleb Rashleigh, Saleem Obeid, Mark Janes, Alister MacDonnell, Kate Lombard, Yazan Ismail, Coen Mackey, and Jesse Racicot.
Congratulations to Ivor Cook on his recent skiing medal.
 
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about subtraction and letter sounds. They would like to thank Jessi Marten who donated a clothes rack to their classrooms.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is sending out a big thank you to Sherry Dean for teaching them about hand washing. They are learning about germs and will be doing some research and experiments on germs for the upcoming science fair.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about transportation in social studies. In math they are learning about time and money. They are all looking forward to the long weekend.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is learning about time and measurement this week in math. They are creating timelines in social studies about their lives. They have been spending some extra time outdoors and taking advantage of the spring weather. In science they have just finished learning about the water cycle.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is very excited that their caterpillars will be here in the next few days. They are starting their final science unit about living things. Lots of the seeds that they planted are starting to sprout seeds. Their little pumpkin plants are ready for the greenhouse. They planted the seeds from the pumpkin they had for Halloween.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class read the centuries old folktale “Stone Soup” this week. Today they are making their very own stone soup today. They will be adding some beans from their classroom! In science we are learning about the things that people do.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about simple machines in science. In math they are learning about subtraction with re-grouping using base ten blocks. The student of the week is Kira!

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class wrote calligrammes for their poetry unit. It is a special type of poem where the words are drawn into a shape. For example if they wrote about rain and umbrellas they may make the words shaped into an umbrella. To decorate their classroom they created birds to fly around the classroom.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class participated in the ACAP Humber Arms spring poster contest. They learned about invasive species and their impact on the environment. The grade 3’s finished their unit on Charlotte’s Web and got to watch the movie version to make comparisons to the book. Their classroom garden continues to grow. They have plenty of salad greens and are patiently waiting tomatoes as their plants are finally flowering.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are enjoying the nice spring weather. The grade 5 students are working on division and multiplication in math class. They are reading Ticket to Curlew about early settlers in Alberta. The grade six students had a nutrition tour at Colemans on Humber Road with dietician Renee Martin.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had a lot of fun at the science challenge last week. In language arts this week they learned about handwriting analysis and analyzed each other’s writing. Did you know your handwriting can tell people about your lifestyle, personality and health?

There will be no school on Monday for the Victoria Day holiday.


  
Our annual science fair is May 30th in our school gym. The parent viewing is at 1:30.

On Monday we celebrated the May Crowning with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group. For the month of May all students and teachers are wearing a blue ribbon.

William Bruce-Robertson won the Mayor for a Day Essay contest for the City of Corner Brook. On Monday, William and Keely Brothers participated in a mock city council meeting. William was the acting Mayor and Keely was an acting councillor. William was picked up from school on Wednesday by a fire truck and brought to city hall to celebrate Municipal Awareness Week. All the students went outside to wave to him as drove off.

The Junior High class attended the annual Junior High Speak Off on Tuesday evening. Our judges were Ms. Stephanie Howell and Mrs. Marie Ryan. The overall winner was Hajra Ahmad who spoke about her experience riding a hot air balloon.

Our grade seven and eight students took part in the National Science Challenge “Let’s Talk Science” on Thursday at Grenfell University. Our school had three teams taking part in the challenge. Students prepared by studying a variety of science topics, doing practical challenges and hosting a class quiz. The coaches for the challenge were Mr. Hancock and Mrs. McCarthy.

The boys’s basketball team finished off their season with a game against their parents on Wednesday afternoon. It was a very exciting game! They would like to thank their coaches Mr. Mark Hillier and Mr. Michael Quigley for all their hard work.

The grade six girls’ soccer team is playing in a tournament at Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday. The first game begins On Friday at 4:30 pm.

We would like to offer condolences to our maintenance person Mr. Gilliam on the passing of his father this past week.

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate William Bruce-Robertson who won the Mayor for a Day Essay contest and Keely Brothers who was selected to be a councillor for the mock city council meeting.

Congratulations to Hajra Ahmad who won the Junior High Speak Off.

Congratulations to Gina Spencer who won a top twenty medal for the Regional Heritage Fair. We had nine students represent our school at the Heritage Fair, they were: Keely Brothers, Bridgett Sparkes, Clara Ryan,  Maria Reynolds, Douglas MacKenzie, Hajra Ahmad, Amna Ahmad, Mira Ismail.

Congratulations to Rebecca Janes for her ribbon for balance in CanSkate 4, also to Rotém Philips-Grobelaar who won the most dedicated CanSkate Award at the Silver Blades annual ceremony.

Congratulations to Mark Janes who won a medal in hockey and to Isaac Buckingham who won the Marble Cup Boys’ Under 10 Championship.
Class News


The junior kindergarten classes were busy finishing their Mother’s Day crafts this week. They are welcoming Noah Hynes to their class this week. Happy Mother’s Day to all their moms.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class celebrated William’s birthday on Thursday. Happy Birthday, William! They have been busy making some Mother’s Day surprises. They have been doing a lot of dancing and working out as part of their healthy choices unit in health.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working hard on their Mother’s Day surprises. They are learning about telling time in math and learning about transportation in social studies.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is finishing up their unit on geometry. They are learning about the water cycle and timelines in social studies. They are planning surprises for their mommies for Mother’s Day!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was very excited this week to see that some of their plants are sprouting. They are started a new unit in math this week on geometry. They also make surprises for les mére for Mother’s Day!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about how much things have changed overtime in social studies. They are busy this week making some special surprises for their moms.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about re-grouping in math and learning about how nature takes over in social studies. This week Claire is the student of the week.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class began a new topic in math this week. The grade two’s are doing surveys and the grade three’s are doing geometry. In French they read and wrote poetry. They also made bread and butter like the first settlers. They are wishing a special mother’s day to all moms!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class would like to congratulate Amna Ahmad who presented her heritage fair project at the Regional Heritage Fair on Saturday at G.C. Rowe. The grade three’s have begun their fractions unit in math. The grade three and four’s are heading outside in social studies to explore rivers, streams and various water systems.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on an ACAP art contest about invasive species in our oceans. The grade 6 class was very excited to visit William Bruce-Robertson during Municipal Awareness Day at city hall for a barbecue.  The grade five students are learning about different kite festivals in language arts while the grade six students are learning facts about snoring.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class took part in the “Let’s Talk Science Challenge” yesterday at Grenfell.  In language they are learning about how to add voice to their writing.


This Sunday is Mother’s Day. Don’t forget to treat your mom extra special!
