Grade 5/6 News Article-Lion's Roar (10/20/17)

Today we are celebrating Pajamarama Day in support of the Janeway Children’s Hospital. The student leadership council is sponsoring a movie in the gym with chips and candy.

The grades 4, 6, and 9 students received their immunizations from the Public Health Nurse on Thursday.

This week we are observing Waste Reduction Week. On Monday we had a litterless lunch day, Tuesday was Water Day, Wednesday was Paper Free Day, Thursday was Up-cycling Day and today is One Hour No Power Day. Classes spent time each day discussing the importance of protecting our Earth.

Dr. Andrew Furey of Team Broken Earth visited our school on Thursday to present to classes on the work they are doing as medical professionals to give aid to people affected by hurricanes.

Last week was Fire Prevention Week in the City of Corner Brook. We were very excited to find out this week that we had two winners in the Fire Prevention Contests. In grade two Lauren Green was the winner of the primary poster contest. In grade 5 Candace Johannesen was the winner of the elementary slogan contest. Candace’s slogan was “If you have a fire, don’t just shout – use the fire plan to get out”. Both students won an individual prize package and a pizza party for their class.

Congratulations to Madeline Murphy who won a medal in Tae Kwon Do for Awesome Respect this week.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning Halloween words and making Halloween crafts. They are beginning to grow bulbs.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning AB patterns in math. They are learning how their senses help in the environment. This week they are working on French Halloween vocabulary.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been learning about all the ways they can reduce waste. They made some creepy Halloween decorations by re-using boxes and bottles. They are starting estimating in math.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class has been discussing water this week. They have been talking about the water cycle, how they use water, and why we should converse water. They also created art this week using up-cycled materials such as paper towel rolls, old tissue paper, empty tissue boxes, and cardboard.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is finishing up patterns in math. They are eager to start numbers to 100. They are learning all about the water cycle in science and are enjoying fall crafts in art.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is really excited to be performing a play in French as part of their oral development. The grade three and four students are learning new fall vocabulary and the grade five and six students are using imagery to write spooky paragraphs.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is learning about the meaning of three digit numbers. They have been working on place value. They had fun today using base ten blocks to represent some challenging numbers.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is interested in finding out about explorers in social studies. They are writing a class story in language arts.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is writing biographies on heroes in language arts. In science class they are learning about the respiratory system through hands on activities. They had their first math test of the year this week.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is reading a book about child slavery in Pakistan. In science class they are participating in paper plane Olympics.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class have started a novel study on Freak the Mighty. The students have been assigned to their groups for the upcoming Intermediate Skills Challenge. They are busy preparing for their specific roles.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is starting novel studies in language arts this week. The science classes have just finished tests on their first units. Canadian History 1201 has started their research assignment on Famous Canadians from the early 20th century.
Coming Up
We will have our fall Scholastic Book Fair Family night on Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 pm in the school cafeteria.
