The Olympics begin today. We are very excited!! Many classes are doing Olympic themes and learning about Canada’s athletes.

The grade 6 girls’ basketball team was excited to participate in the annual RNC tournament this week. Thank you to Mrs. Bishop and Mr. Ryley Nadon for coaching the team.

Last week the Junior High girls’ basketball team participated in an invitational tournament at G.C. Rowe.

On Monday we celebrated Saint Valentine with a special prayer service and skit with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group.

This week we welcome Mr. Drew Nadon to our school. He is the new Junior High homeroom teacher and math teacher.

The Junior High report cards went home on Wednesday. We hope all the Junior High students did well!

Our art classes would like to thank Starbucks for their donation of popsicle sticks for classroom art projects!

If anyone still has their Winter Carnival button money it is now due at the office.

Stars of The Week

We would like to congratulate our Junior High girls’ basketball team who has a great time at the G.C. Rowe Invitational tournament last weekend. Hajra Ahmad, Makenzy Bishop, Alejandra Hernandez, and Maria Reynolds all received players of the game awards. Maria Reynolds was chosen for the all star team!

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie, Abigail Woodford, Claire Brake, and McKenna Batstone who participated in the Silver Blades Can Skate Team who won bronze medals at the Provincial Championship last weekend in St. John’s. McKenna is the co-captain of the team. Congratulations also to Anna Brake, a member of the Juvenile Precision Silver Blades Figure Skating team, who also won bronze this past weekend. Way to go!

Congratulations to Benjamin Bellows-Davis, Matthew Buckle, Carter Bromley, Natalie Caines, Yazan Ismail, Mark Janes, Luke Murphy, Jessie Racicot, and Saleem Obeid who won medals at a hockey tournament in Stephenville last weekend.

Congratulations to McKenna Batstone, Bridgett Sparkes, and Paige Walsh who were chosen as the school winners for the Pink T-Shirt Contest for anti-bullying week. They will represent our school for the Corner Brook Crime Prevention Slogan Contest. Thank you to Mrs. George for overseeing the project.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes in conjunction with Groundhog Day took homework home for the very first time. On Friday they did a poll to see who expected the weather to be sunny, allowing the groundhog to see his shadow or if they thought it would be cloudy and therefore not allowing the groundhog to see his shadow. On Monday they compared their predictions. This week they are learning about the Olympics and making Olympic flags. They will participate in their own Olympic challenge.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is wishing Israela a very happy birthday. They are enjoying some Olympic activities today. They are also learning new Valentine’s Day words in French. Amour means love.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is very excited about their classroom garden. It is fun to watch the plants start to grow. They are busy preparing for Valentine’s Day.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is starting adding in math this week. They are learning about groups in social studies. They are also starting Valentine’s Day activities.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is looking forward to the Olympics and the Corner Brook Winter Carnival. They are wishing our Canadian athletes bonne chance!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about love. In math they are comparing surface areas. In religion they are learning how God calls us by name.

Ms. Park’s grade two class has started student of the week writing. This week the student of the week is Will. They are learning about floating and sinking in science. They are also testing different solids.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class are imagining what it would be like to be very very tiny. They read a book about being very tiny and had to make their own unique sentences. If she was tiny, Isabelle would travel in her mom’s pocket. If she was tiny, Natalie would find shadow under a broccoli. If he was tiny, Brandon would travel on a butterfly. If he was tiny, Caleb would play soccer with a cheerio for a ball. If he was tiny, Jakson would sleep in a jar. If he was tiny, Lucas would ride a chicken like a horse. If he was tiny, Simon would take a book for a camping tent. If he was tiny, jack would ski on an ice cube.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class had their last day of cross country skiing this week. They really enjoyed the program!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was busy this week working on a new mail art project with Mrs. Bruce-Robertson. They are very excited about making their self-portraits. The grade 5 class made profiles of themselves for winning Mr. Wonka’s golden ticket. The grade 6 students were busy making a school video as part of their Commonwealth Education Project with Mr. Ryley Nadon.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class went sliding on Wednesday as part of their enrichment class. They needed a good break after their week of exams. This week they are learning about technology and inventions. They are realizing that some inventions are created by accident.

Coming Up

The countdown to the 100^th day of school is continuing.

There will be a meeting for the Quebec City/Space Camp trip for parents on Sunday evening at 7 pm in our school cafeteria.

We will be celebrating teacher appreciation week February 10 to 14.

Valentine’s Day is February 14^th.

Our school will go skating on February 18 at 9:30 am.

On Monday our school hosted our first ever family literacy night. It was a huge success! Thank you to Mrs. Foley who organized the event and all the teachers who created fun activities for our families. We had many fun stations including making graphic novels, book mark making, a book sale, library book exchange, literacy games online, mini-book making and a favourite book photo booth. We also had some prize winners for the door prize, book sale, and book donations. Jayden Lempriere, James Lao, and Lukas Gilbert all won a free book from scholastic. James Lao also won the giant pizza cookie donated by Mrs. George at the used book sale. Yum!

Students in Mrs. George, Mrs. Hodder and Mrs. Foley’s classes are very excited to start the Little Green Thumbs project. Thank you to Mr. George and Mr. King for installing the gardens this week. The Department of Agriculture donated the gardens for this project. Also, Ms. Karen Kennedy from the Department of Natural Resources visited with the teachers this week to help get the project started.

This week we welcomed a new volunteer to our breakfast program. Welcome, Ms. Jennifer McGinn.

On Tuesday our school said goodbye to Wesley Calvalcante, an amazing person, who travelled home to Brazil. We are sad to see him go. His class hosted a special goodbye party and all the students gave him cards and visited to say goodbye.

The Junior High students are doing exams this week. Today they finish with their math exam.

Our school is selling Winter Carnival buttons. The cost is $3 per button.

Stars of The Week

We would like to congratulate our grade 6 girls’ basketball team who hosted Templeton Collegiate last Friday. It was a very close and exciting game. The girls lost by only three points. The girls would like to thank their wonderful cheerleaders and their fans that came out to support them. They would also like to thank their awesome coach Mrs. Bishop.

Congratulations to Abigail Woodford who participated in her first hockey tournament in Port Aux Basque last weekend.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about polar bears. They would like to thank Ms. Nancy Janes who donated computer monitors to their classrooms.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class would like to wish Noah Conté a happy birthday. They celebrated his birthday this week. They read Jillian Jiggs and made pigs out of recycled water bottles. They are starting their French shapes in math.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is starting addition and ordinal numbers. They began planting their Little Green Thumbs Garden this week.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class has just started their Valentine’s Day math and language activities. They did a melting experiment in science and are learning about groups in social studies. They hope Grace Brake-Higgins is having fun in Jamaica! They would like to tell her they miss her!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about comparing and measuring objects. This topic has prompted many interesting conversations. They are still exploring how things change this week. They are having several very fun science classes doing tasty experiments.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is so excited about the seedlings they planted this week as part of the Little Green Thumbs program! They look forward to sampling their produce.

Ms. Park’s grade two class are learning about making wise decisions. They are continuing their study of solids and liquids in science class.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class are very busy this week. The grade 2 students are writing a comic book about a dog named Médor who is really annoying! The grade 3 students are reading a story about a stranger in the woods. In this book, all the animals are searching for the strangers. They soon find out the stranger is a snowman made by the children to observe the animals!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class is really excited that their garden is finally here. They will be planting a variety of seeds next week, including: beans, tomatoes and salad mix. They can’t wait to watch their seeds turn into seedlings and later full grown plants that they get to eat!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class were very busy this week. The grade six students created a logo for a local business they would like to have in their community. The grade 5 students are very excited to be reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They took pictures pretending they had won their very own golden ticket!

Ms. Jones’s junior high and level 1 class was busy completing midterm exams this week. They will get their report cards next week. On Tuesday they said goodbye to Wesley Calvalcante who has gone back home to Brazil. They hope you enjoyed his time at our school. They will miss him very much! Also, they would like to say goodbye to a special teacher, Ms. Jones who had her last day today.

Coming Up

On Monday we are having a celebration of Saint Valentine’s with the prayer group at 1 pm.

The Olympics begin on February 7^th. We are very excited!!

We will be celebrating teacher appreciation week February 10 to 14.

This week Denise Graham our public health nurse did a presentation on non-smoking for the grades 3 to 6 students as part of Non-Smoking Week. Our junior high class also participated in non-smoking week by making a radio ad. These students were: Hajra Ahmad, Caroline Bruce-Roberston, Douglas MacKenzie, and Maria Reynolds. Great job, everyone!

The junior high and level 1 students are starting their exams today. They are doing their language exam today. We wish them good luck!

Last Friday the grade 6 girls’ basketball team had a game at Templeton. Thank you to Mrs. Foley and Ms. Scott for accompanying the students. They are playing another game against Templeton after school today in our school gym!

Ms. Victoria White from the Kids Eat Smart foundation visited our school breakfast program this past Tuesday.

This week our whole school is selling Winter Carnival buttons. The cost is $3 per button. We hope everyone gets one.

We are collecting used books of all kinds (children, adult, recipe books, etc.) for a used book sale to take place during our Family Literacy Night on January 27. For each book a student donates they will receive a ballot to win a free new book at our February Scholastic Book Fair!

Stars of The Week

We would like to congratulate Anna Brake, Claire Brake and Abigail Woodford who skated last week in the 2014 Western Division Competition held in Stephenville. Anna brake placed 6^th in the Stars Girls Under 13 and qualified for the provincial tournament for the Western Skating team. Claire Brake and Abigail Woodford both received their report cards earning bronze standard.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition on Saturday. They were: Hajra Ahmad, Makenzy Bishop, Mira Ismail, Sara Ismail and Telicia Young. Hajra finished first place in the 13 and under category while Sara Ismail placed second. Mira Ismail placed first in the under 12 category. Both Hajra and Mira get to participate in the provincials this weekend.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are busy this week learning all about penguins and enjoying the new snow we have!

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is having lots of fun recycling and learning about the environment. They’ve been practicing mindfulness this week. They have been making much better decisions thanks to their prefrontal cortex.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is starting the MindUp curriculum this week and learning all about how their brains work. They are working on the letters “k” and “y”. In science they are studying life cycles.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is finishing up their numbers unit in math. They have started learning about predicting in science experiments and freezing and melting. It was Ben Bellows – Davis’s birthday on Monday. Happy 6^th Birthday, Ben!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been learning about the parts of the body and the digestive system. They have been talking a lot about healthy food choices and what we need to stay healthy. The children are very excited to learn about this and are even discussing it at recess and lunch!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about sounds that things make in science. They are making story cubes in religion with their favourite stories about Jesus.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about solids, liquids, and gases. They are also learning about technology from the past and having fun making catching snow flake pictures.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class are learning a French secret code. When they have words that are plural with an “s” but the “s” is not pronounced it is part of the secret code. In science class they are learning about structures. They will need to make tests to answer the question: what material is best for building. They are doing lots of experiments to find the answer. The grade 3 students really enjoyed having Mme. LaChance go skiing with them on Tuesday!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class had a great time at their second cross country skiing class. Everyone is showing a lot of improvement already. They are looking forward to Family Literacy Night on Monday from 6-7 pm.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is learning a new version of volleyball in gym class called Nitro Ball. The grade 5 students have started a novel study on the book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and made dream catchers in math. The grade 6 students are reading all about space in language and learning about ratios in math.

Ms. Jones’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy this week preparing for exams. They are very sad to say goodbye to Wesley Calvalcante who is returning to Brazil on Wednesday morning. Everyone will miss him!

Our family literacy night is on Jan. 27.

Casual Day is January 30 in aid of the breakfast program.
