Father Roache visited our school on Monday and shared some magic tricks with students after celebrating Mass in our chapel. Students (L-R) Noah Evans, Summer Gale and Ella Rashleigh watch as he performs a trick. 


On Monday, student nurse Jen Crane visited the grades four to six students to give a presentation for National Non-Smoking Week.

Last weekend our girls grade six to level 1 basketball team travelled to Grandfalls Windsor to play two games against Exploits Valley Intermediate. Congratulations to Emma Doman and Maria Reynolds who received top scorer awards. The team would like to thank Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Meade for driving the students.

Our school took part in the Canadian National Junior Curling Championship this week. The Mrs. MCarthy’s  5 and 6 class, along with Anna Mackenzie, were flag bearers for the Monday morning game, Mrs. Horner’s grade three and four class were flag bearers on Wednesday and Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four class are flag bearers today. The students also stayed to watch some of the curling and learn about the game.

Term two will officially begin on Monday. A new afterschool program information sheet was sent home and is due back at the office on Wednesday.

The junior high to level 1 exams continued this week with the students writing their science exam on Wednesday. The final midterm exam will be math on Monday.

The grades 3 to 6 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are participating in the RNC Basketball Tournament this weekend. The girls played their first game on Wednesday and the boys play their first game today at 6 pm at St. Gerard’s Elementary School.
Our Family Literacy Night was rescheduled because of the winter storm. It will go ahead next Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:30 pm.

STARS OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to Jakson Ganz who was the winner in the Provincial Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador poster contest. Jakson won a Dell Venue 8 Tablet. The awards presentation will take place in St. John’s on February 16. As a result, the school also won $500 which will be used for our technology project.
 
We would like to thank the College of the North Atlantic for their donation of 25 computer systems to our school!
 
 

CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are still talking about polar bears this week. They are also learning the letter “h” and the number “8”. The students are looking forward to literacy night next week.
Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the letter “n” and have started learning to read a book about “ma famille”.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is talking about being a good friend in health class. They are working on the letter “c” in language class.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about how things change in science class. They really enjoyed seeing how they can change corn kernels and Jello powder into yummy treats. They loved having Allister’s mom Dr. MacDonnell in the classroom last week to teach them more about their eyes. The star of the week is Oscar George.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion is learning about measurement in math. This week they are comparing objects and discussing surface area. They are also talking about different occupations in social studies. Every job is important for the community. They think that picking what you want to be when you grow up is so hard!
Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about resettlement in social studies. The student of the week is Jacob.
Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class transplanted their tomato seedlings and will also plant some pepper seeds. As they near the end of their winter theme they were busy making paper snowflakes. In math they are studying the relationships between addition and subtraction.
Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class had their third cross country skiing session on Tuesday. In science they are learning about all different kinds of forces. They are finishing their unit on addition and subtraction in math this week. The grade fours are reading a poem called “The Bug Restaurant” in language arts and exploring what kinds of foods might be listed on a menu for bugs.
Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class had a pizza party last week to celebrate all their effort as a class. This week the grade three students are learning about measurement and the grade four students are learning about diagrams.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class welcomed Grenfell student, Emma Hull, to their classroom this week. Emma is doing a placement with the class as part of the Grenfell Access program. The students have been busy this week creating artwork for their February bulletin board and reading about Rapunzel.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have been busy preparing for their exams this week. They wrote their math exam on Wednesday and they will write their science exam on Monday.

On Monday, Father Roache visited our school to celebrate Mass with our students in the chapel. All of our classes were delighted to invite him to visit on Friday and Monday to perform some of his famous magic tricks.
Over the weekend Mr. Graham and the Chamber Choir performed at the opening ceremonies of the Corner Brook Royals’ game at the Pepsi Centre. 
On Tuesday, the grade three and four students had their second cross country skiing lesson at Blow Me Down Ski Club. Also on Tuesday, the grade five and six class had their second DARE lesson.
Today the junior high to level 1 students begin their midterm exams.
The grade 6 to level 1 basketball team will play in a basketball tournament in Grand Falls on Sunday against Exploits Valley High School.

STARS OF THE WEEK

We would like to thank all of our families for their support of the family fundraiser we held on Friday.

Winners in kindergarten were: Hala Parsons, first place; Logan McCarthy, second place; and Sophie Grant, third place. Winners in grade one were: Ava Hodder, first place; Ella Rashleigh, second place; and Luke Coleman, third place. Winners in grade two were: Charlotte Mercier, first place; Mariam Ahmad, second place; and Summer Gale, third place.  Winners in grade three and four were: Isabelle Mercier, first place; Jack Matthews, second place; and Simon Boitsefski, third place.
CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are working on the letter “g” and the number “7”. They are learning all about polar bears this week. In science they learned how blubber keeps animals warm in winter climates. They would like to congratulate Yael Piercy who has a new baby sister this week.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the new sight words “une” and the letter “k” this week. They welcomed Brooklynn back to school after being gone since before Christmas. They had a welcome back party for her on Thursday.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about germs in science. They are very excited that three of their students were winners in the Knights of Columbus colouring contest. They would like to congratulate Hala, Sophie and Logan

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is making happy books in health class this week. They are making story cubes in religion class with pictures of all the stories they have heard this year. The class would like to wish Ben Bellows-Davis a happy seventh birthday this week.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion has just begun a new unit in math about measurement. They began tracing their feet and comparing sizes. They then ordered them from the smallest to the largest. The students are also studying the brain. The students are amazed by how many things the brain does at once.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about directions in science this week. They are mapping their route to school. They are finishing up their catching snowflakes art project. This week they have started their student of the week. The student of the week is Nikola.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class enjoyed the magic by Father Roche on Monday. This week they are learning traditional French Canadian songs and have started a math unit on addition and subtraction.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class had their second cross country skiing lesson this past Tuesday. They have started a new unit in math and are learning about symmetry.  They are also learning in social studies about why people moved to Newfoundland hundreds of years ago. Today they are having a presentation from student nurse, Jennifer Crane, about hygiene. The student of the week is Jenna.

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class had their second skiing lesson at Blow Me Down Trails on Tuesday. The students really enjoyed the practice and they improved a lot. They had great fun outside enjoying the weather. The grade 3 students have finished reading “Charlotte’s Web” and are working on some illustrations.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had their second lesson of DARE this week with Constable Mosher. The students learned all about the effects of cigarettes and alcohol to their bodies. The class is reading a new book called “Rapunzel: The One With All the Hair”. 
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class start their exams today. The grade 7 to level 1 students will write their language arts exam this morning. Last weekend, the class went sliding at Margaret Bowater Park as a final activity with the exchange students. They are saying goodbye today to the remaining Brazilian students, Vivian Mylena, Bruno Coelho, Eric de Melo, Williana Cardoso, and William Freitas, who are finishing up their exchange here in Canada.

The grade three and four students were excited to begin their cross-country skiing program this Tuesday. Mme. Lachance, Ms. Horner, Mr. Ryley Nadon and Mrs. McCarthy skied with the group.  Also this week, Mr. Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class went skiing and snowboarding at Marble Mountain on Wednesday.

The kindergarten classes attended an orientation session on Wednesday at Western Regional Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

This week our school was the recipient of a Kids Get Active grant from Colemans. This funding will be used for our physical education program. Mr. Ryley Nadon accepted the cheque on Wednesday at Colemans.

Mr. Nadon’s class held a social on Thursday afternoon to say goodbye to Clebson Yuri, Lucio Rodrigues, Amanda Barros, Ana Ribeiro, Carlos Albuquerque and Anderson Barros who are returning to their homes in Brazil this weekend.  All classes visited the students to present cards and wish them well.
Our school chamber choir will be performing at the Opening Ceremonies of the Royals game on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm.

 


CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are doing the letter “g” and the number 7. The junior kindergarten teachers brought the snow into the classroom in the water table since the wind chill was so cold this week.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the letter “c” and the word “ta” this week. They have also been working hard on their routine after being gone for so long over the Christmas break. They are enjoying the snow and have been going outside to play and even do some fun science experiments.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was very excited to take a trip to the Western Regional Memorial Hospital school of nursing for their hospital orientation. They learned a lot about what doctors and nurses do. They are comparing sets in math and observing how their Little Green Thumbs garden is growing.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about goods and services in social studies. They are using mental math strategies to add and subtract. They are making snowman stuffies from socks today! The star of the week is Mallory Chambers.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion has been learning about houses around the world. They think it is so interesting to see the different homes! They are also working on a fun super tasty science experiment.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is starting a new chapter in math on addition and subtraction to 18. They are also learning about changes in environment in social studies. The students would like to welcome Matthew Kemp to their classroom today.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is having fun with riddles this week. They are reading and writing riddles of their own.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class really enjoyed their first day of cross-country skiing at Blow Me Down Trails. This week they were busy learning about our local heritage sites and drawing pictures.

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class worked on creating a slideshow to promote the school’s field trip to Québec and Montréal.  The students are presenting the slideshow to other classes in hopes that a lot of other students will want to visit the province in May.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class went to Marble Mountain to ski and snowboard on Wednesday. They were also busy preparing a going away party for some of Brazilian student leaving this weekend. This weekend we say goodbye to Amanda, Lucio, Clebson, Ana, Anderson and Carlos.

Welcome back and happy New Year, everyone! We hope you enjoyed the holiday. On the last day of school everyone enjoyed an awesome variety show. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and the members of the Student Leadership Council for organizing the event.

Our playground area is filled with fresh snow as we begin the New Year. Please remember to bring your snow pants, hats and mittens to school each day!

CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are making snow volcanoes and are demonstrating the positions over and under. They would like to welcome Melissa Pynn, a new Early Childhood Educator, to their class this week as well as three new students. Welcome to Aaron Keough, Addison MacArthur, and Bridget Mercer.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class would like to wish everyone une bonne année. This week they are starting to learn about water and its different forms. They have been learning their numbers and are also working on the letter “g”. The class would like to wish a speedy recovery to Brooklynn Pittman who was sick over the holidays. The star of the week is Jamie.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was excited to bring in a Christmas toy for show and tell. They are learning about groups in social studies and the letter “k” in language. They would like to wish a happy birthday to Sophie.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class would like to wish everyone a happy New Year! The grade one class is writing about their new year’s resolutions. We are doing subtraction stories in math class. They are also doing some neat New Year’s crafts. The star of the week is Luke Coleman.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion is very excited to be back in school. Their Christmas break was wonderful and Santa was so good to everyone. They are working on some winter themed activities. They are also working on a sight word review. In social studies they are learning about houses around the world.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is making scratch paper fireworks in art.  They have been hard at work on their New Year’s resolutions and also having lots of fun doing many New Year activities. They welcome Tyler McCarthy to their classroom this week.

Mme. O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class is learning about friction in science with Mme. Ryan. They are also studying pictographs in math.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is welcoming a new homeroom teacher this week. The class is excited to have Ms. Briana Horner as their new homeroom teacher. The grade three students are learning different adding strategies and writing letters to their new penpals in Labrador. They would like to wish happy birthday to Myles .

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class are happy to be back together after the Christmas break. On Monday, the students made a wish for world pearl, help for the poor, happiness, and joy for everyone. The grade three students began a new topic in science on architecture, while the grade four students have started learning about light.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had an excellent holiday break. They finished their read aloud book “A Dog’s Life” this week. They also began guided reading groups. In math, the grade five students are starting a unit on transformations and the grade six’s are finishing a unit on factoring.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is busy preparing for midterm exams which will start in two weeks. In language arts the grade seven students have started a new theme on mysteries.


COMING UP...
The grade three and four students will begin their cross-country skiing program next week.
The kindergarten hospital orientation will be next Wednesday, January 14th.
