Last week we celebrated spirit week. On Friday we dressed in blue to show our school pride. We had a classroom Roar Off competition. A lion named Gus visited out school to bring some spirit as well as Lioness Mrs. George.
On Sunday our school had its annual St. Patrick’s Day Pot Luck Dinner and Family Social. Lots of families and staff were dressed in green to celebrate. Thank you to Mrs. Trudy Brothers and Mrs. Janice Coleman for organizing this event. Colin Spencer correctly guessed the number of green candies in the jar. Mrs. Barb Anderson won the 50/50 and Mrs. Mary Lannon won the door prize. The MacDonnell family won the award for best dressed green family.
This week is nutrition week! We made an extra effort to bring healthy snacks to school and some classes visited Coleman’s for nutrition tours. As well the Student Leadership Council held a daily nutrition trivia contest.
Our pre-festival showcase was cancelled on Wednesday because of the possibility of a bad storm hitting Newfoundland. It will be held after the festival is over.
Our students have been doing the Stations of the Cross with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group during morning chapel. We finished all the stations on Tuesday. On Wednesday the primary classes attended a special exhibition of the Host in chapel.
The Rotary Music Festival Starts today!  Our school choir is singing at the Arts and Culture Centre at 9:30 and our Chamber Choir is singing at 9:50. It is open to the public.
Today we are celebrating apple day in our school breakfast program with yummy apple parfaits and other apple treats! Yummy!

Stars Of The Week
 
We would like to congratulate our hockey players who won medals last weekend. Our hockey medalists include: Ella Rashleigh, Carter Bromley, Matthew Buckle, Natalie Caines, Noah Evans, Aiden Lamswood, Luke Murphy, Saleem Obeid, Yazan Ismail, and Alister MacDonald.
Congratulations to Éloi Boucher, Samuel Blackwood, Luke Coleman, Hala Parsons, Lydia Parsons, Natalie Parsons, Rotém Phillips- Grobbelaar, Simon Boitsefski, Yazan Ismail, and Tyler Dillman who won medals at the Blow Me down end of season awards ceremony last weekend.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning all about Canada’s food guide. Mrs. Vincent and Mrs. English class did a nutritional tour with Mr. Corey Conrad and Mr. Ian Tucker at Coleman’s on Humber Road this week.  They would like to thank Lisa Doucette, Sarah Lavallee, Nadia Cook, Sylvia Phillips and Candy Kennedy for donating items to their classrooms. They welcome Liam Brinstone and Bryant Osmond to their class.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about healthy choices in health class. There were lots of birthday’s this week including Brady, Mme. Brake and her dog Gus! Happy birthday to everyone!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about fish in science and beginning a geometry unit in math. They are very much looking forward to enjoying the apple treats in the breakfast program today!

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class has just finished their addition unit in math. They are starting geometry this week. They are also finishing their “Our Roots” unit in social studies.  They are welcoming a new class pet this week. They would like to wish Jordyn a happy belated birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about verbs and finishing their unit on penguins. They are watching “March of the Penguins” today. They are excited to report that they are welcoming three new fish to their classroom fish tank. They are looking forward to beginning some spring activities.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started their geometry unit in math. We finished our penguin research and celebrated by watching a documentary “March of the Penguins”.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about movement in science and measurement in math. Last week, Keira was student of the week. This week’s student of the week is Max.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class welcomed spring last week, however there were no changes in the weather! This week the students worked on creating a spell in French to help spring show its magic tricks, including: disappearing snow, appearing flowers, and brown trees changing to green. What a great magic show nature will give us with maple syrup.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class are looking forward to the Rotary Music Festival. Their class is participating with the school choir and a number of students are also in chamber choir. Best of luck to Colin Spencer, Arabella LeBlanc, Isaac Buckingham, Alessandra LeBlanc and Clare Coleman who are participating in other performances during the festival.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on their speeches for the elementary speak off in language class and their heritage fair projects in social studies. In gym they are playing tchouk ball. A really fun game where you throw a ball off a spring board and someone else has to try and catch it.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is still practicing for the drama festival coming up on April 10th. Also, they have started to work on their heritage fair assignments in language arts.

On Tuesday, April  1 the primary choir will have their workshop at the Arts and Culture Centre from 10:30 am until noon.

On Wednesday, April 2 the junior kindergarten and kindergarten students will perform for the festival at 10:30 at the Arts and Culture Centre.

On Thursday, April 3 the grade five band and the grades 6-9 band will perform on Thursday at 10:30 am at the Arts and Culture Centre.

Last weekend the Boys’ Basketball Team had a Tournament in Pasadena. They had a good performance. Thank you to their coaches Mr. Mark Hillier and Mr. Michael Quigley for coaching the team.

Also last Friday we had Pi Day celebrations in the gym and a school Moo-Off for Milk Spirit Week. We would like to send a special thank you to Mrs. Foley who organized the Pi activities, all the parents who donated the delicious pies and the students for their amazing ability to memorize the numbers of pi!

Mrs. Foley and Mme. Ryan’s classes have been chosen by the WWF to grow Milkweed plants for the Monarch butterflies. There were only 1,000 seed packages available. Our school will be a butterfly way station in the spring.

We had no school on Monday. We hope you enjoyed the long weekend! This week we are celebrating a spirit week called “March Madness!” organized by Mrs. Foley and the Student Leadership Council.  On Tuesday we had a St. Patrick’s Day theme, Wednesday was crazy hair or hat day, Thursday was make a change day where students dressed up as someone else and donated their change to charity and today is Lion’s Pride. Everyone is dressed in school colours! There was a lot of excitement this week!

Stars of the Week
We would like to congratulate our top six Pi Day winners who recited the numbers of Pi: Hajra Ahmad, Gina Spencer, Clara Ryan, Colin Spencer, Ryan Murphy and Kate Murphy. Hajra recited 104 numbers of Pi!

Class winners in our Moo Off competition were JK students Iver Cook, Lilah Walsh, Katy Hancock; Kindergarten students Yazan Ismail, Alister MacDonnnell, Ben Griffin, Ella Rashleigh; grade one winners Gabe Rowsell and Katherine Noel; grade two winners Sadie MacDonnell and Brandon Brake; grade three winners Simon Boitsefski and Jacob Bursey, grade four winner Cole Dumaresque; grade 5 winner Sam Antle;  grade six winner Keely Brothers; and as pairs Kyah Goold and Natalie Caines, as well as Noah Walsh and Chase Rumbolt-Colbourne.

Congratulations to members of our boys’ basketball team on their tournament last weekend. Isaac Buckingham, Aria Kazerouni and Colin Spencer all received player of the game awards.

Congratulations to Claire Brake, McKenna Batstone, Jenna Cammie and Abigail Woodford who participated in the Provincial Junior Figure Skating Competition in Grand Falls this past weekend.  Their team, the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club won the Agnes Thistle Shield for being the top club. Cabigail won silver and Claire won bronze in the Star 3 category. Mckenna won a silver medal in the Star 2 category. Congratulations to all the members of the team.
Congratulations to all the students who received awards at our school mid-year assembly where we gave out awards for excellence in spelling, improved speller awards, perfect attendance and awards for honours and distinction in junior high. William Bruce-Robertson was awarded a green team dedication certificate; Brandon Brake, Ryan Murphy, Israela Ngania, Hala Parsons, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Maria Reynolds and Jarius Jan Jose were awarded perfect attendance certificates; Jacob Blackwood, Jakson Granz, Isabelle Mercier, and Katherine Noel all received most improved speller certificates; Noah Evans, Emily Hindy, Ava Ignor, Abigail Tiller and Natalie Parsons all received Excellence in Spelling for French Immersion;  Jasmine Batstone, Carter Bromley, Leal Lainey, Kate Murphy, Max Antle, Claire Brake, Jenna Cammie, Sadie MacDonnell, Coen MacKey, Gavin Staples, Gordon Staples, Isaac Buckingham, Alessandra LeBlanc, Heather Cooper, and Hajra Ahmad all received perfect spelling  certificates for term 1; Mira Ismail, Hajra Ahmad, Sara Ismail, Maria Reynolds and Caroline Bruce-Robertson all received certificates for honours; and Nicolas Moreno, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Alejandra Hernandez, and Douglas MaKenzie all received distinction certificates. Way to go!

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes had fun doing St. Patrick’s Day activities and other activities for spirit week.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had so much fun during spirit week. They had some of the craziest hair you’ve ever seen on Wednesday. They almost caught a leprechaun on Tuesday, but he was too smart. He did hide some gold coins – that sneaky leprechaun!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was tricked by the leprechaun who left their classroom full of footprints and escaped through their window. He did leave them a treat in the leprechaun trap. The students were very excited to take part in the spirit week activities.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class celebrated St. Patrick’s day on Tuesday and found a pot of chocolate gold. They are learning new sight words and learning different symbols of danger in health class.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was very excited to arrive in school on Tuesday. They were amazed to find that a leprechaun had been in for a visit! He made a huge mess with snap cubes, blocks and art supplies.  He made up for the big mess by leaving pretty shells in the fish tank and a leprechaun hat full of gold coins. In math class the students had lots of fun counting by regrouping.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed spirit week! They didn’t catch any leprechauns, but one did play tricks and left them some gold coins.

Ms. Park’s grade two class had a lot of fun doing many St. Patrick’s Day activities. Even the leprechaun came but they could not catch him. They had a lot of fun observing “mystery slime” in science.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday by wearing green. In class, they painted rainbows with Jello and were writing on a pot of gold about the gold that is inside them.  They also enjoyed eating a special snack - a Jello rainbow!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class really enjoyed the spirit week activities. The grade 3 students are in the middle of their multiplication unit in math and are practicing their facts to increase speed and precision.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are busy preparing their band pieces for the music festival. The grade 6 class won the group prize for the Great Pencil Challenge. On Wednesday they celebrated with an ice cream sundae party and short movie. The grade 5 students are learning about the weather including different ways they can learn about the weather and new words related to the weather. Did you know “chinook” is a hot dry wind that can turn a wintery day into what feels like summer?
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is working on memorizing their lines for the upcoming drama festival. They are also finishing their neon art projects.
On Sunday our school is hosting our annual St. Patrick’s Day pot luck and family social. All families are invited to attend! There will be prizes for the best dressed green family.

Last weekend we hosted the western Provincial Grade 5 Girls’ Basketball Tournament. Our girls did extremely well. They placed first in the division, but lost in the semi-finals. Thank you to all the students and parents who helped to make the tournament a success. Imelda Welshman was the winner of the I-pod draw.


 On Tuesday the Grade 6 girls’s played a game against Stephenville Elementary and the junior high girls’ basketball team won against Stephenville Middle School by one basket!  On Wednesday our Grade 5 boys’ basketball team played against Pasadena.


Report cards went home on Monday for students in junior kindergarten to grade 6. Then on Tuesday evening the teachers had meetings with the students’ parents. Thank you to all the families who donated to our school breakfast program during our parent teacher night.


On Wednesday we had our term 1 awards assembly. There were lots of awards given out for perfect spelling, perfect attendance and for honours and distinctions.


The junior high class has started practicing for the drama festival coming up in April. They are doing a play called “Café Murder”.


Today we are celebrating Pi day with some special events in the gym. Also, we are having our school Moo-Off that had to be postponed from last week. There is a lot of excitement in the school for these events.

Stars of The Week
We would like to congratulate Abigail Woodford who participated in a Hockey tournament in Grand Falls last weekend.


Congratulations to our grade 5 girls’ basketball team on their tournament last weekend. Clare Coleman, MaKenzy Bishop, and Emma Doman who won player of the game awards.


Congratulations to Sam Antle and the members of the Atom B Hockey team who won gold at the 2014 Mount Peyton Invitational Hockey Tournament.
Congratulations to Gina Spencer who received second place provincially in the Legion’s Remembrance Day Essay Contest for the junior essay category!

 
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are doing St. Patrick’s Day activities. They are looking for donations for low bookshelves, coat trees and storage solutions.


Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class has been busy getting ready for St. Patrick’s Day. They are planning songs about rainbows and gold. They did an experiment in science testing what materials sink and what materials float.


Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was busy this week doing St. Patrick’s Day activities.  They are very excited about their new class fish and would like to thank the grade 6 prefects for organizing the bake sale and purchase of their new tank and pets.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class has been having lots of fun preparing for St. Patrick’s Day. They are planning on hunting for a leprechaun in hopes of finding his gold! They made rainbows using Fruitloops.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is having so much fun this week. They are learning about penguins! They have also been exploring what it means to be a good friend. The class is welcoming a new clown fish into their fish tank!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about St. Patrick this week. They are doing St. Patrick’s Day writing and crafts. They are excited about constructing a leprechaun trap today and hope to catch one over the weekend!
Ms. Park’s grade two class has started a new chapter in math called measurement. They are enjoying St. Patrick’s Day writing and crafts. This week their student of the week is Rebecca.
Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class were busy building this week – but not wearing their safety helmets! The grade 3 students were building skyscrapers and the grade 2 students were building geometric forms. The classroom looks like a construction site!
Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class created beautiful St. Patrick’s Day pots of gold that can be seen hanging in their classroom windows. The grade three students have begun their multiplication unit in math and are working on practicing their multiplication facts. The grade four students have recently received recognition from the YMCA for their Create-a-Logo contest. Congratulations! Their classroom garden continues to grow and they’re keeping their thumbs green by taking care of our plants on a regular basis.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is finishing The Great Pencil Challenge today! They were challenged to use the same pencil for all their work for one week. Mrs. McCarthy had regular “pencil checks” to make sure everyone still had their pencil. Today they are celebrating with special certificates and individual and group prizes. The grade 6 students made up their own alien planet and society in language class this week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had a great time at the National Geosceince and Engineering Month Bridge Building Competition. Caroline Bruce-Robertson and Sara Ismail’s bridge held 99 kg! Special congratulations to Nicolas Moreno and Juan Carlos Ramirez who won a prize for most aesthetically pleasing bridge.

There will be no school on Monday, March 17.


Next week is school spirit week and March madness hosted by the student leadership council.

This week is Milk Spirit Week. To celebrate classes made special announcements from the media centre of milk facts, songs, and skits. Today we are having a Moo Off in the gym!

Last week Father Roche celebrated Mass with us in our chapel on Thursday and again on Friday at All Hallows. Afterwards he visited classes to show us some amazing magic tricks!

This week our school is hosting the Grade 5 Girls’ Western Provincial Basketball Tournament. It started on Tuesday with a game against Sacred Heart and will finish on Sunday. Congratulations to the girls on winning the first game.

The grade 6 prefects for Mrs. Hodder’s kindergarten class hosted a bake sale on Tuesday to purchase a fish tank and fish for the kindergarten students. Thank you to everyone who baked cookies or purchased them.

Last Friday Ms. Jenny Wadden and Mr. Brian Hancock presented to our grade 3, 4, and 6 classes on energy conservation as part of our Spotlight on Savings grant.

We attended Mass this week on Wednesday instead of Friday to celebrate Ash Wednesday. On Tuesday our school hosted a pancake breakfast for Shrove Tuesday. It was delicious! Thank you to Mrs. King, Mrs. George, Mme LaChance, Ms. Park, Mrs. McCarthy, Mme Ryan, Ms. Scott, and Ms. Victoria White, Western Coordinator for the Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program, for helping to make pancakes and serve our students and families.

On Saturday the Junior High students will be going to the National Geoscience and Engineering Month Bridge Building Competition to test their Popsicle stick bridges. It will begin at 10 am inside the mall in front of Target.

Stars of The Week
We would like to congratulate the Junior High Girls’ basketball team who played against Stephenville Middle School in a very exciting game on Friday. Maria Reynolds was the top scorer with 21 points. She led the team in a one point win.
Congratulations to Clare Coleman who was the player of the game in the opening game of the Grade 5 Girls’ Western Provincial Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. Congratulations to Makenzy Bishop and Emma Doman who were the top scorers with 16 and 14 points
We would like to congratulate our Winter Carnival Spelling Bee participants. In grade four they were Ahmna Ahmad and Jerico San Jose – they were both amazing! Amna got first in her grade and Jerico was very close. For the grade five category Samuel Michael and William Bennett represented our school. They both did splendid. Madison Noel and William Bruce-Robertson represented our school for the grade six category- they were spectacular.  We would like to say way to go for putting so much work into the spelling bee.
Special thank you to Lily Smallwood who made a donation to the breakfast program this week on Wednesday in Chapel. Lily made robots out of cans and sold them at the Wonderful Fine Market on Saturday. 
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about good nutrition and doing activities about lions and lambs. Ms. Perrett and Ms. Simms class would like to thank Jeff Murphy of Safe Guard for doing a sanitization and purification of their classroom.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is all decorated for St. Patrick`s Day. They are busy painting rainbows and singing leprechaun songs. They have started a new unit on objects and materials.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is very excited about getting their new fish. They are learning about rules in social studies and are learning subtraction in math. They enjoyed the transplanting session last Friday for their classroom garden with Ms. Karen Kennedy from the Department of Agriculture.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is starting some St. Patrick`s Day activities. They are still learning addition and are starting some new activities in social studies.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about St. Patrick`s Day. They really enjoyed the pancake breakfast on Tuesday.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has learned about the 17 kinds of penguins and are every excited about doing research on their favourite kind. They are learning about Lent in religion class and enjoyed eating pancakes with all their friends on pancake day. They enjoyed the transplanting session last Friday for their classroom garden with Ms. Karen Kennedy from the Department of Agriculture.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing research to find a recipe that involves adding or removing heat in science class. They are learning about long nouns in language arts. This week their student of the week is Cole.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class wrote a lot of negative sentences this week. Je ne suis pas un elève (I am not a student). Ce n’est pas mon école (It is not my school). Je ne suis pas joyeux (I am not happy). Ce n’était pas une bonne semaine (So it was not a great week)!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class would like to congratulate Amna Ahmad and Jericho San Jose on the spelling bee. Their classroom garden is growing well. They are excited to see the fruits and vegetables of their labour. They enjoyed the transplanting session last Friday for their classroom garden with Ms. Karen Kennedy from the Department of Agriculture.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed the book fair a lot! We would like to thank the people who attended the spelling bee and also say good job to grade 5 students Samuel Michael and William Bennett and grade 6 students William Bruce-Robertson and Madison Noel.  Today they are starting the Great Pencil Challenge!

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is starting to learn about probability in math. They are preparing to create their own probability problems in class. On Saturday they will test their model bridges at the Corner Brook Plaza.

Coming Up

Report cards go home on Monday and parent teacher night will be Tuesday night from 7-8:30 pm.
School will be closed on Monday, March 17.
