Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (16/11/18)

The grade 6-level III students finished their leaf raking fundraiser last Friday afternoon. They would like to thank everyone for their generous donations. It was another successful fundraiser.
The Prayer Group celebration scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled this week because of the storm, but will go ahead on a later date.
Mrs. George’s class hosted another successful Operation Christmas Child. Thank you to all our families for their generous donations. The students were able to fill 78 boxes for children in need!
The Knights of Columbus is hosting a Merchandise Bingo at our school on November 25 at 2:00 pm. We are also selling 50/50 tickets in aid of our school gym floor project. The draw will take place on Sunday.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Jamie White-Robertson who cut her hair and donated it to the Canadian Cancer Society this week.
Congratulations to Luke Coleman, Isaiah Coleman, and Thomas Moerschell who traveled to St. John’s to participate in the Atlantic Boychoir Christmas Truce Concert.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes welcomed two Early Childhood Education students this week from the College of the North Atlantic. The students are completing a five-week placement. The students are learning about healthy living and practicing for the Christmas concert.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is beginning a theme on Eric Carle. The students were excited to have two snow days this week! They are enjoying playing in the snow outside.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class packed 78 boxes for Operation Christmas Child this week. In science, they are learning about how their senses help them.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is working to finish off their representing numbers unit in math. They have also begun some addition strategies. They are discovering building materials and foundations in science.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about matter in science. They are comparing numbers in math class.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is completing their math units this week. Students are working in groups to prepare an oral presentation.
Mrs. Williams’s grade three class started a new unit in science on structures. They learned what makes bridges so strong and then worked in pairs to see who could build the strongest bridge. It was a lot of fun!
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is starting their patterning unit in math and beginning a novel study in language arts this week.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is excited to start a new unit in science on weather. They were especially excited that winter arrived this week with a two day closure for winter storms.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class has been working hard in preparation for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. Students also wrote speeches this week for the YMCA Peace Week Speak-Off.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is counting down the days to the Skills Challenge trip. The groups have been working very hard on practicing the skills they will demonstrate next week. They will soon complete their novel study on “The Little Prince”.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class finished the leaf raking fundraiser last Friday afternoon. Canadian Studies students are learning about weather and climate of Canada. Earth Systems 3209 students are learning about igneous rocks.
Coming Up
The YMCA Peace Week Speak Off for grade six students is Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm.
The school photographer will do re-takes of school photos on Tuesday, November 28th.
Our school Christmas concert is on December 6 at 7:00 pm.

The IHMS Winter Wonderland Craft Fair is on Saturday, December 8 from 10 am to 4 pm. Crafters and entrepreneurs are invited to book a table for $25.
Imogen Ash works with letters in a hands on literacy activity in kindergarten.
 Grade seven student, Rebecca Janes, works in the school cafeteria making homemade pancakes. Rebecca and her partner Reyd Ward will compete in the Intermediate Skills Challenge in the Junior Chef category next week.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (10/11/18)

This week IHMS students and families honoured our veterans with a Remembrance Day Assembly. We would like to thank Mr. Drew Nadon and the grade seven and eight students for organizing this annual event. All classes participated in honouring our veterans. The senior band performed and Christian Mouland played the last post. We would like to thank Mr. Al O’Connell of the Royal Canadian Legion, Father White, Lt(N) Cheryl Cull, and Captain Jason Cull for their contributions to our annual assembly.
Our basketball season is well underway. The grade six boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are looking forward to their first tournament. The grade three and four teams will begin skill development following the long weekend.
The kindergarten and grade three classes were involved with a live chat with students in Barcelona. A student from the class in Barcelona came to their class along with his sister and parents. They shared traditions regarding Halloween with the students. They learned a lot about the customs and traditions that take place in Barcelona.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the importance of Remembrance Day. They made their own poppies and really enjoyed taking part in the Remembrance Day assembly. They are learning about the letter “f” and the number 6.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning all about friends and talking about the importance of Remembrance Day.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about Remembrance Day this week and learning about the brave people who fought to keep Canada free. They are building numbers in math and sorting items for Operation Christmas Child.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is learning about Remembrance Day. The students learned a new song, read poetry, and have worked on an art piece.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is working on ordering numbers and phonics. Students are writing free verse poems about Remembrance Day.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class have been busy writing essays and making posters of Remembrance Day. They sang a beautiful song at the assembly and did an amazing job. All classes are finishing their unit in math and are preparing for a test next week. Students are also participating in many oral activities and incorporating new vocabulary and verbs.
Ms. Williams’s grade three class shared their Halloween stories with each other and worked on their procedural writing this week. In math they practiced counting forward and backwards by 3’s and 4’s on 100,200, and 300 charts. In health class they learned the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles and the importance of good posture.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is very busy! They had a math test this week and finished writing their Remembrance Day essays and crafts. They are making instruments in science class.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class started a new strategy unit in language arts on making connections. They are reading a new book called “Rapunzel: The One With All The Hair”.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is finishing their airplane Olympics in science class. They are excited to start a new unit on electricity. The students are working on their projects for the First Lego League Robotics Competition at the end of the month.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class planned and organized our annual Remembrance Day Assembly. Students are working on their forgotten soldier project.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class made a slideshow presentation for the Remembrance Day Assembly. Biology 3201 students are learning about endocrine hormones and Science 1206 students are learning about the periodic table and Bohr diagrams.
Coming Up
Our school Christmas concert is on December 6 at 7:00 pm.
Hoodie orders are being accepted in the office until November 16th.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (2/11/18)

The Knights of Columbus is hosting a Merchandise Bingo at our school on November 25 and selling 50/50 tickets in aid of our school gym floor project.
Our student leadership council organized a costume parade and haunted walk on the stage for all students. It was a great day of activities, and Halloween themed learning.
Mrs. George’s grade one class has begun collecting for Operation Christmas Child. They are collecting new toys, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, face cloths, and tooth brushes to pack for children in need.
The Girls’ and Boys’ basketball teams have begun weekly practice sessions. They are looking forward to a great season ahead.
Our intermediate Skills Challenge team will begin their Leaf Raking Fundraiser this weekend. Depending on the weather, this may continue into next week.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Isaiah Coleman who won second place in the SSNL Island Qualifier in Cross Country Running for grade four boys last weekend in Kippens.
We would like to congratulate winners in the Lions Club Peace Week poster contest. Reyd Ward received first place, Carly Johannesen placed second, CarlyRae Mouland placed third.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes welcome Charlee Howse to JK2 this week. They are learning about the importance of Remembrance Day as well as practicing their poems for the school Remembrance Day ceremony.
Mrs. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is completing their research project this week. They really enjoyed learning activity stations on Halloween and the costume parade in the gym.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been learning some Halloween poems. They are working hard with their spelling tests. The star of the week is Jonathan.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class was very excited to celebrate Halloween this week. Much of their work has been Halloween themed. They finished their Halloween stories, worked through Halloween centres, and completed Halloween story problems in math.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is studying free verse poems this week. They are learning about counting money and studying air and water in science.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class immensely enjoyed the Halloween activities in the gym. They are preparing their song for the Remembrance Day assembly. All classes will have a math test next week. The grade four’s will present their project d’un Explorateur on Monday.
Mrs. Williams’s grade three class learned about water erosion and why there is sand at the beach. In social studies they are learning about different land forms in the Atlantic region. They also listened to a fun song about the provinces of Canada, the capitals and the symbols.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is learning a lot about respectfulness of Remembrance Day. They are learning about explorers in social studies and will soon share their findings with the class.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class has had a fun week working on Halloween STEM builds in science class. They are almost finished writing Remembrance Day essays.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class has started working on their robotics project. The class is joined with some junior high students and they have formed two teams: Space Rangers and Space DAWGS. They are finishing their paper airplane Olympics in science class.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is starting a novel study on The Little Prince. They enjoyed the Halloween spelling games in language arts this week and taking part in the Haunted Walk on the school stage on Wednesday.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class will participate in a leaf raking fundraiser this weekend. They would like to welcome Amber Fudge, a Level 1 student, to their class this week. Math 2201 students are learning about parallel lines and angles.  Earth Science 3209 students are learning about geologic time.
Coming Up
Monday, November 5 is a casual day in aid of Team Broken Earth. Students are asked to bring $1.
Our school Remembrance Day assembly will take place on Thursday, November 8 at 10:45 am.
IHMS will host a Winter Wonderland Craft fair on December 8th. Call the school to book your vendor table.
The IHMS Christmas concert will be on December 6, 2018.
