Everyone had a great time at the agri-food and garden show last Friday at the Pepsi Centre.  We tasted lots of great food and saw some baby chicks hatching.

Our JK teachers attended a workshop last week for Western Health.

Thank you to Mr. Graham for playing at church last Friday.
We have a new public health nurse this year. Her name is April Dakins. She will be in our school on Tuesday mornings.
Our teachers are hard at work on a new environmental grant. Thank you to Mr. Sean Dolter from Model Forest and Mr. Blaine Hussey from the Department of Agriculture for meeting with staff about the project on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday Mr. Charles Cameron visited our school and offered his expertise and experience in our new learning resource centre.
On Wednesday we had our annual Terry Fox Walk. Thank you to Mrs. George who did a live broadcast on the IHMS channel about Terry Fox and Mr. Gillard who organized the event.

This week we welcome two nursing students doing a work placement in Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English classroom. They are Michael Hinks and Jessica Strowbridge.

Today is medical theme day. We are raising money for the WMRH Foundaition Radio-thon. Also, vegetable orders are due today.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Brooklynn Companion who was the school winner for the school’s grade 5 agri-foods spelling bee.
  
Congratulations to Abigail Companion, who was elected Student Council President, Jenna Yetman as Vice-President and Melissa Castillo as Secretary. Elections for primary representative and class representatives are still going on.
 

Congratulations to Sadie MacDonnell and her family on their new baby Molly Elizabeth.
Congratulations to Kennedi Boland who placed fourth in the Juvenile Ladies’ Division at the Roberta Pack Competition in St. John’s. She also passed her juvenile test. Olivia Park and Caylie Blake also had good skates at the competition. Cayle Blake also passed her skating test on Sunday.

  
From The Classrooms

The junior kindergarten classes are painting plates and making turkeys out of them for thanksgiving, and making placements.
 
Mme. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is doing French numbers and doing math patterns.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on the foster family contest and learning the letters “l” and “e”. They are excited about medical theme day today.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class are finishing their silhouettes and putting them on the wall.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class just finished patterns in math and made necklaces. They are learning about healthy living in health.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning how Jesus welcomes children. They are writing about things they like to do in the fall. They did a great job in spelling this week.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing a Barbara Reid novel study and fall crafts.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is watching a video in religion about Moses. The grade 4’s wrote library limericks for library month.  They are excited that today is medical theme day. They are working hard on their language arts course and doing lots of reading.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is writing stories for Foster Families week.

In Mr. Taaffe’s math class they filmed short games of twenty questions about number patterns.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class started putting their First Lego League robotics mat together. The grade 7’s are learning how to use the media room equipment to make short videos.

Recess canteen services begin on Monday.
Our annual thanksgiving food drive starts next week.

The breakfast program started on Monday. We are looking for parent volunteers to help with this in the morning from 8 to 8:45.
Our afterschool program is going on everyday afterschool. Thank you to Ms. Crocker and the teachers who volunteer for activities.

Mr. Taaffe attended a math workshop on Friday for the new Level 1 math program.
Basketball tryouts were held over the weekend on Saturday. Thank you to Mr. Taaffe and all the students tried out.
The intramurals started on Tuesday and runs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The games are played on teams and the teams score points for all students who participate. Thank you Mr. Gillard.
The running club started on Tuesday and Thursday of this week. They are busy preparing for the first running meet at C.C. Loughlin in October.
Live IHMS TV broadcasts started this week. They are being made every recess. Stay tuned!
Wednesday was National Tree Day. We planted 7 large trees and some seedlings in our outdoor classroom. The trees were bought with some of the money from the TD Friends of the Environment grant. The whole school took part. Thank you to Ms. Michelle Hamlynn from the Department of Forestry who came and helped everyone with the tree planting. The school started our composting program and every classroom now has a compost bin. Also on Wednesday night parents and teachers had curriculum night.
The grade 5 and 6 class had a field trip for National Forest Week on Thursday at the park. They had an excellent time and had a lunch of pizza and cupcakes.

Today our classes are visiting the AgriFoods & Garden Show at the Pepsi Centre.

Stars of the Week

Good luck to Kennedi Boland and Olivia Park on their figure skating competition in St. John’s this weekend.

Congratulations to Olivia Park, Hailey Colbourne and Alex Williams who represented our school at the AgriFoods & Garden Spelling Bee. Way to go!

From The Classrooms

The junior kindergarten classes are doing an apple theme and learning about apples! They had a great time planting trees for our school playground.

Mme. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class made an angel craft and played instruments this week.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about living and non-living things. They are listing words that begin with the letter “I”. They are excited about the fair today.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is going outside and investigating living and non-living things. They planted four seedling trees outside on the front lawn.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about ways to communicate and writing in French journals. They are learning how to write their names in upper case and lower case letters.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is finishing up a unit on patterns in math. They are excited about the agricultural fair. They are having an apple taste test to go with their apple theme.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about life cycles in science and writing time capsules in social studies.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class can’t believe how fast time is going. They are learning list three in their spelling books already! They had a lot of fun planting seedlings on Wednesday. Happy National Forest week everyone!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great time planting maple and magnolia trees in the outdoor classroom and on the front lawn on Wednesday. It was a lot of hard work! On Thursday they had a field trip to Margaret Bowater Park for National Forest Week. They are writing limericks in language class and playing basketball in gym class.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class had a great afternoon planting trees. They have begun planning their trip for the skills challenge. They have a new seating area for hanging out and eating their lunch together.

Welcome back to school everyone!  We welcome some new teachers like Ms. Dwyer in Kindergarten English, Mlle Wight in Kindergarten French Immersion, Mme. Perez-Diaz in grade one French Immersion, Mr. Spencer who teaches science and Mr. Gillard our new gym teacher. Mr. Davis also started as our new maintenance person this week. We wish Mr. Kennedy a happy retirement!
This year we have our first international student. Welcome to Melissa Castillio who is doing level 1.

We also have a new swing set on the front playground and an outdoor classroom in the backyard.  We hope to get some more playground things soon. The junior kindergartens also have lots of new play things in their playground.

Our new learning resource centre will be opening soon. Our library automation started over the summer. Thank you to the students who came in and helped during summer vacation including Hannah and Bridgett Sparkes, Sarah and Nicole Keeping, Claire and Maria Reynolds, and MacKenzie Brothers.

On Monday we had a 12th Birthday celebration and everyone dressed up for a 12 theme day. Also, the after school program started on Monday.
Stars of the Week

Congratulations to our school on getting a TD Friends of the Environment Foundation grant for our outdoor classroom project. We were given $2,500 for our green projects. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy and Mme. Noseworthy who worked on the grant proposal. In the next few weeks we will be planting trees around our outdoor classroom.

Congratulations to Mme. Noseworthy on her new baby granddaughter.

Congratulations to Abigail Companion on her trip to Washington, D.C. for the People to People Leadership Conference.

From The Classrooms

The junior kindergarten classes made friendship salad and crafts. They are learning about friendship.

Mme. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class likes the new playground and they are making new friends.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about living and non living things in science and learning to sort things in math.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is learning about what makes them special.


Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about the five senses in science and are having fun doing patterns with cubes in math.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about different ways to communicate in social studies. They are learning the difference between day and night in science. They are really excited to be back in school.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about animals in science and are learning about patterns in math. They are also doing back to school art.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is learning about exploration in social studies and patterns in math. They had a great first week back.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is having a marble championship today. They really enjoyed the 12th Birthday celebration and had their first spelling test this week.
 
Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class went on a hike and geocaching at Three Bear Mountain trail on Wednesday.

 Coming Up

Our school breakfast program begins on Monday at 7:45 am and will run every morning.

Curriculum night for parents and teachers is Wednesday at 7 pm in our gym.

The grade 5 and 6 class is going on field trip on Thursday for National Forest Week.
